Ned Stark ended up no different than the boy he executed for "lying" about White Walkers. People just didn't see things his way and he was killed for it. He ended up no different than men like Rhaegar and Arthur Dayne; killed for the love of a blood relative, just as Ned himself killed good men in Robert's rebellion for the love of his murdered brother and father.
That boy was executed for abandoning his post, not for lying about White Walkers. And the way Ned died was quite different from those he had killed in the past. In Ned's case, he was betrayed and beheaded publicly because of others people's political machinations and agendas. Those who died at Ned's hands in the war died clean and were honored afterwards, even though they were on the other side.
