Exactly. It is biblical and religious. This is a society that has rejected much of technology at this point because of the ruination of society. The Christian leaders were able to manipulate the laws into their interpretation of the bible.
One of my favorite books.
To use the baster, the man would have to masturbate first. That is forbidden by the Old Testament--Onan. One cannot spill speed or as Monty Python sings: "Every sperm is sacred."
I'm not sure she didn't, she just did a bang-on job portraying how that could be injurious to both men and women.
