Readers' Hit New Books of the Year (So Far) > Likes and Comments

For all the people complaining about "too many American authors"... This website is based in the USA, so obviously many of its readers are American. There's no requirement for Goodreads to represent all authors worldwide! If you want to see more European authors, try a website based in Europe. 😉 Remember that this list shows what the *readers* have picked. ☮️ If you know some wonderful Asian or Australian or whatever books, then tell us about them!

Yes, that's true that Goodreads' half year mark is at the end of May since the Choice Awards come out end of November or beginning of December. And, I can't wait to read some of these books...
Phoenix13 wrote: "Would love to see middle grade get some love. I'm sure there were some great releases on the middle grade scene that we never get to hear about."
Me too! After scanning my list, I realize that I haven't yet read any NEW Middle Grade in 2024. I have Red Bird Danced and The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman on my TBR list.
Age of Magical Overthinking is great, but This American Ex-Wife by Lyz Lenz *needs* to be on this list. Definitely one of the best of the year so far!
Ruth ware is British! Who cares if this list is a week early or whatever. I really enjoyed this list I usually have to wait until the choice awards at the end of the year to decide what to read but now I have a peak into what is trending.
According to the calendar, we’re already halfway through 2024. That means it’s time for our annual midyear check-in, where we suss out the most popular new releases of the year so far.
what d'ya mean? we have, like, almost 7 months left! ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????/

I couldn't agree more with what's been said by Inés, Dave, and Alison. For non-American Goodreads members, it would be great to see far more non-American-centric books on these lists, as they have less appeal for some of us. Not by listing fewer US books, however, but by making the lists *longer*.

What calendar do y'all use that says after 5 months that it's been 6 months? I often get anxious too about having only half the read..."
Probably because they do the Goodreads Choice Awards before the year is over. There's less than 6 months to read the books that will be on the list to vote for.
Courtney wrote: "How is this list curated? Lots of these aren't even rated 4 stars?"

If you actually read the article it says how....
Dark Academia wrote: "Ministry of Time was very disappointing, it is too raw and needs more edits and revisions, really looking to read The Teacher."
You thought Ministry of Time needed more editing and was disappointing... but you look forward to the absolute trash that is Freida McFadden's books??? lol
For the roughly three billion or so people commenting on this post asking "how was this list compiled?" and "why are nearly all the authors American?", I humbly suggest actually reading (!) the introduction:
...the most popular new releases of the year so far, according to Goodreads members. As always, these selections are based on the total number of reader reviews and which titles are making their way to members’ Read and Want to Read shelves.
Below, we’ve sorted out the top new books of 2024, in each of the usual categories, in order of popularity.
Jane wrote: "Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Cana..."
Wouldn't we all?
Johan wrote: "I enjoy lists, but I don't know why contemporary and historical have to share a category. I mean if romantasy gets its own category..."
Too efficient. Like the government, sometimes I think the GR Powers That Be abhor anything that reeks of either efficiency or common sense.
Zelda wrote: "Where is coming of age???? unacceptable really"
It's now considered to be "YA," that's where.
Louise wrote: "I couldn't agree more with what's been said by Inés, Dave, and Alison. For non-American Goodreads members, it would be great to see far more non-American-centric books on these lists, as they have ..."
Nah. Give US authors their own subset of lists... .

ACTUALLY, there is about 7 months left so he is right

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett, who is Canadian as well!
Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand..."
I second this, and would like to add translated books to the list as well.
Law wrote: "I want to read First Lie Wins and The Women. I've read three books from this list, Bride, The Familiar and The Teacher, and all were disappointing."
First lie wins is 👍
The familar started really slow but it picks as you continue
Same comment as Alison. It's quite a shame how US centric Goodreads is.
Bonus comment: It's OK if you and many of your users are monolingual (although it's not the norm worldwide), but you should still be able to highlight books that have been translated.
Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand..."
Hey! I have recommendations for books from Indian authors (but not recently been published) "Hangwoman by K.R. Meera" and "Sakina's Kiss by Vivek Shanbhag"
Contemporary fiction and historical fiction have to share a list, but fantasy, romance, and romantasy each get one? Yikes.
Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand..."
Seconding this question! How about authors from many different countries?
Thanks.
Kim wrote: "Why are these mid year checks at the beginning of June? So bizarre."
Because June is mid-year?
Katya wrote: "Cool. When are you gonna give us a 10 star ratings system?"
Goodreads won't do that. However, The StoryGraph or LibraryThing can do that.
Marc *Dark Reader with a Thousand Young! Iä!* wrote: "According to the calendar, we’re already halfway through 2024.

you are overanalyzing, my friend
Law wrote: "Goodreads won't do that. However, The StoryGraph or LibraryThing can do that."
No, The Storygraph does 5 star rating but with .25, .5 & .75 stars in between.
I have read The Women and First Lie Wins. The Women started off very strong but lost me a little toward the end. Still enjoyed and would recommend. First Lie Wins was a great thriller.
James and Just For Summer are on my list to read.
Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand..."
It's because the majority of users on here are American, and this list comes from what people are reading and putting on their tbr. Unfortunately, because the majority is American and we tend to be pushed American authors that's what's going to make the top in lists like this. This list wasn't necessarily recommendations but the books with the highest numbers of reviews
I'm expecting and have in Want to read, the book "Wind and Truth" by Brandon Sanderson. It's the Book Five of the Stormlight Archive, and comes out in December. It's a really expected book. Will we see it on the list when it comes out? Because it's the book I have expected the most to read in my life hahaha
Sydney wrote: "Bring back graphic novels/manga/comics and Middle grade to these types of lists!"
Agree! I'd loooove to see a graphic novels/manga section for sure.
Goodreads could literally list every single book written in the entirety of 2024 and somebody would complain about the list.
I love so many of these! My favorite has been Bride by Ali Hazelwood or The Road Not Taken by Emily Tudor!!
Alison wrote: "Thanks for this! A lot of great recommendations. I noticed nearly all the books are from authors based in the US. Do you recommend books written by authors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand..."
The article states that these are "the most popular books on goodreads", not books that goodreads selected. I would 100% support your comment if this was a list of books that "goodreads recommended", but it is not.

How is this list made? Goodreads is owned by Amazon which is worldwide, so why is it mostly US authors?
And it's always the same authors every year for mystery thrillers and romance. And what with Crescent City being a Romantasy. It's fantasy. Bride, is however a romantasy.
Very disappointing if this list is accurate and representative...

I've read The Women by Kristen Hannah! Definitely enjoy her writing.

I agree - I love international authors and always wish for more!
I love mysteries - Michel Bussi has a new one out; he's a fantastic French author
