There always seemed to be unanswered questions. I became so intrigued that I imagined a life story that would explain why a woman had to be secretive. It became my novel The Unknown Mrs Rosen.(less)

I was interested in the horrific plight of the women and in the fact that such things seem to happen in all different kinds of neighbourhoods. I was also intrigued by the argument that such things could be brought to an end by making it a crime to pay for sex with a trafficked women - which has now become the legal situation in the UK. I don't agree with this approach, and the story in The Slave explains why.
Although I have explored the deranged and desperate state of mind of the captive woman (Liliana), and also the hard-headed mercenary outlook of the traffickers, the focus is on the young man (Neil) who has - innocently, one might say - paid for 30 minutes with Liliana in the belief that she is a prostitute. When he discovers that she is in fact a captive, he cannot go to the police because he himself has committed a crime. Instead he tries to free her himself, with the consequences that we see in the book.(less)
