I cannot say enough good about this series. As much as I loved the first book, I enjoyed this one even more. Now that we know the characters, we have a vested interest in what happens to them. I like seeing the progress made by Sol, and it is fun to see him grow and mature. I am anxious to start the next book, as the ending left us hanging and I need to know what happens! I listened to the audio version of the book, and R.C. Bray was brilliant, as usual. I love the voices that he used for the various characters, and he really brought the story to life. On to book #3!
Much better than the first book. Much more invested in the characters/story all the way through... some of the "science" strains my credulity, but I'm willing to roll with it... very interested to read the next book...
If you were hoping for a breather after Jeremy Robinson’s The Last Hunter: Descent, the sequel will give you no such thing. The fast pace continues right where Descent left off. And the plot, as they say, only thickens. And I’m not talking thickens like going from skim to whole milk, I’m talking thickens like syrup, molasses, honey, chunky peanut butter… What’s one of the many remarkable things about Pursuit is that, despite being the second book in the series, its action, intensity, plot development, character development, and hold on the reader doesn’t waiver a centimeter. And if you’ve read his Antarktos Rising as I have… perhaps you too will get a series of chills scaling your spine when reading Pursuit’s very last words. As a writer myself, I marvel at Robinson’s ability to rope in all manner of mythologies and legends, managing to make them all feel right at home in the Antarctic underground. That’s right. The ANTARCTIC UNDERGROUND… if this means nothing to you, then you should stop reading this review right now and read Antarktos Rising and The Last Hunter: Descent. Don’t you dare try reading Pursuit without reading Descent first… it would be like watching Empire Strikes Back without seeing New Hope! Or like seeing Tron Legacy before seeing Tron (ok, perhaps I shouldn’t compare Descent to the first Tron – have you seen it lately? – but how anyone could understand any of the new movie without seeing the first – like who or what Tron even is – I have no idea). Actually, it’d probably be more like watching Rocky II before Rocky I, or American Ninja I before…well, maybe not, but you get the idea. Anyway, despite hoping the author takes a long vacation to avoid a burnout that might render him forever craftless (have you seen his level of output? The guy must have gotten his hands on some device that stops time for him…), I nevertheless hope the next Last Hunter novel makes its way into my hands pronto. The journey is incredible, and I love how he takes themes I’m somewhat familiar with due to my own storytelling, and twists them in ways that I would have never imagined. The last chapter… well, remember in Empire Strikes Back when Vader tells Luke that he’s his father? And then Luke lets go and falls, and he’s just spinning head over heels down into oblivion? Well, imagine the movie ending right there… that’s kind of how Pursuit left me… shocked. Wanting more. Needing more.
To begin - I abhor backtracking. It's a waste of time. I refuse to do much of it in my books. If readers are too lazy to read the first book then they deserve to be lost in the second. So, keeping that in mind, BRAVO ROBINSON!!!!
This book is just as awesome as the first with one exception: it's half the length! I was flabbergasted at how much shorter it was, but still dove into the pages with great expectations & I was NOT let down. The action, gore, pureness of human spirit, the compassion - it's all there & more. I loved "watching" in my minds eye as Sol grew into a man & was shocked at the passing of time & at the extent of his powers. Such a cliff hanger at the end!! I almost clutched dramatically at the air in a Brando-esk "Stella!" like "WHY?!?" but I would have startled my husband from his beauty sleep.
The third book is in the works & I'm waiting with baited breath. Rather like a Behemoth. I just hope I don't smell like one. Or look like one for that matter. Can't wait!
Really really disappointed with this series, and I even had the great R.C. Bray reading it to me. If I knew it would have been more of a kids (teens) book I would have just not wasted a credit. But I’ve listened to many from Jeremy Robinson and I guess thought it would be more like them. The worst part about the series is how the main character has this stupid moral code where he won’t kill a human, regardless of circumstances! He’s going to kill you… nope, not gonna do it. He’s going to kill the people you love… yea but.. it’s another human. He’s going to kill billions of other HUMANS!… no, there just might be a sliver of good in there somewhere. It’s just too much. If you can handle the movies where the victim finally gets the upper hand on the psychotic killer only to then NOT pull the trigger, or even just throw the gun away, maybe you’ll like this book..? The second worst part is just the inconsistencies. The kid has a perfect memory (I won’t even get into how he can, in seconds, know random facts from subjects that a thirteen year old would not have read up on, but he has a perfect working knowledge of, because he read a book on the subject at some point in his THIRTEEN YEARS!) But… just because he spent some time in the dark killing monsters to survive and is treated like a dog, he can’t even remember or recognize his parents?… then it all comes back when he sees a woman that he hardly knows who he remembers from his actual birth….? And his powers. One minute he’s being bested by a monster while trying to fight without powers, then it’s it’s as simple as thinking it dead. At one point he can simply melt the gold band that protects the monsters, and at other points he can’t get them off. At one point he can’t manage to fight the things, but he can, in an instant, create a 200ft hole to fall through to get away, and close it up. But can’t use that same control of the earth to just simply smash the monsters? He is just constantly completely weak and unable, but miraculously pulls himself up and out and is all knowing, all powerful, sometimes “subconsciously” It’s all just too much for me, as an adult. Maybe if I was thirteen… or ten? I don’t know
Sol is on the run. First, hiding within a large cavern but once discovered, he’s now trying for the surface. An interesting incident was Vin the Seeker. During their mental fight, Vin was able to use Sol’s abilities against him. Just reading Sol’s abilities should not have allowed Vin to use them, should it? I think not, but it makes for good storytelling. The difference between Sol and Ull is disturbing. Reverting to the cry-baby, even with all the information he owns is disappointing. It almost makes one want to throw in the towel on the whole story. There must be some salvation for Sol in the future. As volume two comes to an end, one treachery is undone while another is born.
Pursuit was an improvement on Descent in almost every way, and was a LOT of fun. Continued good and interesting worldbuilding, with the story involving all the ancient gods of the world ever evolving and twisting. I am thoroughly hooked on the series at this point and am glad to be able to just continue on to the next book immediately.
I enjoyed this book more than the first. I am really looking forward to experiencing this trip. I have noticed some inconsistencies, but it is a pretty ambitious series and I can easily overlook some of the oddities. On to Ascent now.
A little better than book 1, but honestly, at this point you know what you are getting. The plot is walking a long plank off a cliff. No going back, you get what you get.
While not as good as its predecessor, The Last Hunter: Pursuit is definitely an enjoyable read and an interesting continuance of this series.
A lot of this book has many of the same strengths as the first, so I won't go over those strengths again in this review. If you're reading this review then I will assume that you have already read that book and know what made it great.
One of the key differences that was a bit of a let down for me, is the lack of strong, likeable, secondary characters in the first half of this novel. Sol goes through a number of interchangeable trials that, while not exactly filler, lacked the emotional pull that comes from having likeable characters being woven into a scene outside of the main character. This is rectified half way through the novel, but it made the first half of the book a little less impactful for me.
I am happy about how this book ended, though. From the second half onwards this book rises to the occasion, really pushes the story forward and takes an interesting step in the climax to peak my interest for the next book. This is what all good books should do and this was no exception.
This is pretty much what you would hope from a sequel to a beloved novel. It maintains a lot of what it did well in the first book, it's a worthy successor, and it continues to open the story up for future novels. I wouldn't mind seeing some more, stronger, secondary characters thrown into the mix and for them to stick with Sol through more than just one or two adventures, but overall I was pleased with this book.
I would recommend it to anyone who liked the first novel, you won't be disappointed. If you haven't read the first novel and you are a fan of easy reading, fast paced, fantasy adventures, then I can happily recommend going back and reading The Last Hunter: Descent.
This is the second in what is supposed to be a five book series. It is young adult fiction. The story is about Solomon, the only human born in Antarctica, and his adventures when at 13 he and his parents make a trip back. He is kidnapped, trained and turned into a hunter. He learns who he really is and of the powers he has because of his connection to the land. He frees himself from the power of the mythical gods - who turn out to be real but banished to the underworld of Antarctica.
In book two, this volume, he sets about trying to defeat them before they take over all mankind. They need Solomon to release the power of the greatest of the Gods to lead them. Solomon has matured as a character and this volume is filled with some interesting adventures. He also has some surprising allies emerge, as well as surprising information about who he is and about some of the other characters.
Again, the power of love and forgiveness are obvious, as well as the strength of family ties, rather real or adopted. The book ends with a major cliff hanger, so the third book will be anxiously awaited, I am sure.
I am not a big fan of this kind of fantasy, especially all the violence, but I think this is exactly the kind of book that would appeal to young readers, as well as many adults. The books are well-written, the characters are developed, the story exciting and full of unexpected twists.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing a review.
Well, I have just finished reading book 1 and book 2 of the Antarktos Saga and I have to say, I am hooked.
Unlike with my last book review (The Final Summit), it is imperative that you read the first book in this series before reading the second. Trust me.
In book 1, Solomon Ull Vincent is a 13 year old boy living in the states who is the only child known to have been born on Antarctica. He’s always been geeky, small, and awkward, and he has always been obsessed with learning about his home continent. When his father and mother surprise him with a birthday trip to Antarctica, he is thrilled. But before long, he is kidnapped, and finds out the truth about his lineage and begins to change in startling ways. I won’t give up any more of this book, but you should read it, its good. In book 2, Solomon is older and is still fighting against the Nephilim, the evil half-human half giant race of people living underneath the surface of Antarctica and planning an imminent attack on the rest of humanity. The story is fast-paced, exciting, and graphic. The characters are intriguing and engaging and the twists that the plot takes are enjoyable. If you enjoy this type of fantasy, I think you will like this one, I know I did. I’m looking forward to the next installment from this excellent author.
I really liked book 1. We watched a brilliant but scared young boy survive in an extremely tough environment. He had his memories stollen and was mentally broken down and then built back up to be a fierce fighter, but what he was being groomed to fight was the issue. I enjoyed watching Sol become Ull and I wondered how it would all play out.
In book two it all started to fall apart for me. At the end of book 1 and that causes him to run away and hide from what the Nephilim had planned for him. Now we start to see the old Sol show up again... the one who is scared. This book really focuses on forgiveness, mercy and love. Those are all great things in real life, but in this fantasy story I was hoping for more of a kick-ass warrior book. The fact that I didn't like this book because of all the forgiveness, mercy & love stuff speaks more about me than the book itself.
I gave the first book 4 stars because I enjoyed watching Sol become a warrior. I gave the second book 3 stars because it's well written but I didn't care for the softer touch of the story.
Solomon has been hiding underground since his escape from his captors. He is being hunted and has to be very careful. He is making friends with the creature who live underground.
He is found by those hunting him and heads for the surface of the continent. On the surface he finds other escapees, a small family who adopts him. The evil Ninnis is right on his trail though. He is determined to bring Solomon back so he can continue to hide his same at losing one of his hunters. Ninnis finds him on the surface and Solomon realizes he must go back into the underworld.
Solomon continues to show strength of character. He constantly surprises those around him. Many think he is weak but find out, that he is stronger than they ever imaged.
This is definitely a must read, especially if you have read the 1st book in the series. However, it is also a complete story in itself.
I figured I should leave a review before I tear into book 3 like a dog left alone in a room with a pound of bacon. (watching me read has turned stomachs in the past, so its a legitimate analogy) I read the first two books back to back, as if they were one novel, so it's hard to be specific about this, when all I want to do right now is start on book three of the series (Ascent), and ignore all society until I am finished.
I have missed so much sleep over this series, because when I weighed the benefits of sleeping vs reading this series, I decided I'd just take a nap in a week or so.
If you aren't familiar with Jeremy, you're missing out. If you haven't read this series, I feel sorry for you. If you know of him, and have read his books, and DON'T like him... you're obviously the antichrist.
Our fleeing Solomon, is now coexisting if not peacefully with his other half(ULL, in this case his other personality) Again we discover his struggles as he travels and hunts, one can guess that the repossession of Solomon body would spell certain disaster for the human race, thus our "young" character irons his will, more so when he meets other inconvenience for Nephilim, of whom will steel his nerve for the coming confrontations. As done before, the depths does not lack, and the dangers are all too real to not be felt, despite the knowledge that he wont die, that didn't entail his companions that I've come so close to revere to become victims of death. Plot development continues but by the end, it becomes almost obvious of the outcome, and almost equally blind the that outcome.
When I found out about these books, it didn't interest me as much as previous books of Robinson's had, I held off on getting it till I was finished with the others. Got the first one and immediately got the rest. This series blew me away, I loved it. What I thought was going to be more of a young adult series was one of the best I have ever read. It sucked me in, I loved each character and couldn't wait for more. Antarktos Rising was the first book of Robinson's I read and what got me hooked, this series sealed the deal. It's beautiful in its detail, funny, full of adventure and a great story. I encourage you to check these out.
"The Last Hunter" and it's companion yet stand-alone novel, " Antarktos Rising" are now among my favorite books/series of any type of media-books, movies, video games, etc. If you are reading this, unsure of whether you should read this, be assured, buy it! It's got action, dinosaurs, intense fight and flight scenes, like able characters, awesome storytelling, some hair-raising scariness- all you could want in an awesome epic! For an added experience, read "Antarktos Rising" in between part 2: Pursuit and part 3: Ascent! Then prepare for the Jeremy Robinson floodgates to open, he has a ton of other winners-check them all out!
While I can't tell you exactly what it was about this instalment that I liked even more than the first one, I can indeed tell you that I enjoyed this one much more. Just enough action to keep the pages turning, some happiness for poor Sol after some years of terror, and an ending that made me want to cry and get straight into the next in the series. Very very good!
Listened to on Audible (17/07/2014) - RC Bray has an amazing talent at bringing Sol and all the other characters to life. The supernatural voices are fantastic and it sometimes feels like you are watching a movie
Sol is in Antarctica, the land of his birth - so far this series is nail biting adventure. Sol is fighting his own demons as will as the demons of others. This wonderful reading is full of gods, demi gods and creatures that I would never have imagined. The stuff nightmares are made of.
I am looking forward to reading the next book. I hate cliff hangers and having to wait, but this one is worth it
