This volume went downhill a bit compared to the others, and I'm not sure if there was a real decline in quality, or whether I'm getting a little tired of the story after reading four of the light novels, and seven of the manga volumes, in quick succession (by my standards).

The spider is cute, and her expressions are great. Kakashi does a great job bringing the appeal of this character out in comics form. (I continue to love the scenes where she's sleeping under her handmade blanket. Adorable!) On the downside, the action sequences are somewhat hard to follow, and the human characters are stiff and ugly-looking.

I'm not sure why Kakashi decided, after six volumes that all but ignored the human characters (to the manga series' benefit), to put in a long sequence that basically was a repeat of the previous few chapters from a different, and far less interesting, point of view of human characters Ronandt and Buirimus.

On Ronandt, the light novels' author Okina Baba really seems to like him. From what they say in the afterword in this volume, and in the afterword of one of the light novel volumes, he's a side character that took center stage on his own. From my experiences with NaNoWriMo, a side character taking over the story is an indication that the main story might be losing its luster and/or falling off the rails (or needs to be started over from scratch, in the worst case). And, well, I don't find Ronandt all that funny or interesting--I mean, he's more interesting than Shun, but that is damning with faint praise--so I'm a little worried about where the novels in particular are going to go in the long term if Ronandt becomes more of a central focus.

2.5 stars, rounded up though I'm not sure it deserves it.

When humans invade

With the site of Kumoko's nemesis the Earth Dragon, Araba making short work of a monstrous snake she can see his stats that much easier and he seems all the more unfairly overpowered so the match of the century will have to wait for now. However after Kumoko discovered in the last volume that the spider that spawned her has been trying to assert control over her so when she counter attacks with her minds she has a bit of a pest problem as "mom" sends those she does control off to show Kumoko the errors of her insubordination.

In the mean time through some exhaustive searching after Kumoko helped some other humans misunderstandings occur Kumoko discovers these humans appear to have burned her nest once again and are ready to attempt to kill her if need be. However although the battle is told from not only her side but that of the humans we are privy to the misfortunes of the fated few that survived Kumoko's surprise home invasion party.

Extrait :

For the most part, this series is well-drawn, which is why it is so often frustrating. Graphic storytelling should be a fusion of text elements and art to deliver a narrative. There is too much exposition in this series, however. Narrative boxes simply repeat the panel elements, so there’s far too much panel clutter. There’s an anime adaptation due out soon for this series, so I wonder if it will follow the manga’s single character narrative or the original light novel which features more character perspectives. This volume of the manga is the first to feature a larger parallel narrative. The return of humans to the spider’s nest makes for an entertaining conflict. But, that’s the only positive in this largely mediocre manga.

Brutal!

It's amazing how brutal our spider can be when you go from the perspective of anyone other than it. It's kind of neat to see too to some degree... They had a section where you got to see a recap of one of the big fights from the opponent's perspective, and I think the anime did a better job of making the spider look sinister. In the anime, whenever you see the spider from someone's perspective other than the spider it looks like this sinister monster but whenever it's from the perspective of the spider it's cutesy. I wonder if they're going to continue along the manga route where it's cutesy looking regardless. I guess we'll see.

Set-up, but important nonetheless.

This volume is mostly preparation for other important plot points. I still rated it highly, though, because Kumoko is always great, and characteristically hilarious and murderous.

Good Read

I’m not really here to review. I’m just saying I’d recommend. That said, it’s not for everyone. The rest will now be gibberish because fuck the 20 word limit. La la la la la la la!

I love the little blanket that she has spun for herself and I was devastated when her home was burned down again. I really liked the extra touch here of seeing the battle from the human POV as well. I wondered what they were saying.

The series continues with the protagonist griding her way through the monsters of the labyrinth and advancing her levels. Not great literature but entertaining enough.

In this volume she finally finds the exit of the labyrinth and gets to the surface world.

Of course, Burimius wasn't going to die, but these people's perspectives brought a not inconsiderable breath of fresh air into history. Our protagonist's constant fighting was really getting boring. Especially since she now even prefers to kill a dragon instead of finally escaping this labyrinth. And even if this fight between her and the humans was a good change and there are always two perspectives on a fight, the reactions of Ronandt and Burimius don't fit at all with the earlier scenes from the spider's point of view.
According to Ronandt, it's not at all normal for someone to have as many activated skills as our protagonist here. And apparently she must have some aura of terror or something, because people here all get so scared just by looking at the spider, which really isn't that big. Additionally, since so many monsters fled the maze because of her, one could argue that the giant spiders and other monsters in this volume were only defending themselves against her. She seems to have established a reign of terror. And it would suit her. Because she massacred tons of people here who clearly didn't behave like characters or monsters, and yet she has no scruples. How ruthless she was with the monsters (who no longer stand a chance against her) was bad enough, but this is definitely worse. Is that part of the Taboo skill and Dark Forces skill she has?

Second time reading. I still really like this. I was just going to skim this to remind me of what happened before reading more of the later series, but it looks like I'm sucked back in and will be reading the series again.
