How ugly is Carly Beth's Halloween mask? It's so ugly that it almost scared her little brother to death. So terrifying that even her friends are totally freaked out by it.
It's the best Halloween mask ever. It's everything Carly Beth hoped it would be. And more.
Maybe too much more. Because Halloween is almost over.
And Carly Beth is still wearing that special mask...

The Haunted Mask was one of my first Goosebumps books ever as a kid, and was a favorite. I can't even remember how many times I re-read this, but it had been many years since my last reading, and I'm so happy that it held up just as well as I remembered it. To this day, I think it's such an iconic title because it's one of the most genuinely creepy children's books I've ever read. Whereas most Goosebumps books rely a little more on cheese and silliness, The Haunted Mask is such an awful, horrific idea and doesn't really let up once the fear sets in. If you've never read this, whether you're a long-time Goosebumps fan or not, I highly recommend it! (Also, I listened to the audiobook and it's excellently narrated!)
#11 "If looks could kill...." Carly Beth has no idea what she wants to be for Halloween. But she knows it needs to be really scary. When she finds an old mask at a nearby party store she begs the man to let her buy the mask despite his reluctance. Everything seems good and scary at first, but when Carly Beth starts getting strange thoughts while wearing the mask and even has trouble getting it off, things start to get really creepy! I remember this one. Still great!
This novel of the famous line of Goosebumps is the original book featuring the story of The Haunted Mask that several Youtube Top-lists signaling as the best episode in the now classic TV series which adapted many of the books of the very first original line of Goosebumps.
So, I thought that it can be a good idea to read it...
...and in fact, it was indeed a good reading experience.
Revenge is one of the easiest path to darkness, and Carly Beth found out in the harsh way when tired of being the target of scare pranks of her fellow school mates, she decided that in Halloween, she would be finally the one giving good scares...
...however, the mask that she found for that...
...it's just too efective and she is beginning to lose herself into it...
...and she won't imagine how awful will be the consequences of bringing that haunted mask into her own home.
This is one of the scariest Classic Goosebumps stories, IMO. While Carly Beth is fairly annoying, as protagonists go, I still felt afraid for her.
This is also set on Halloween, so if you're looking for something fun to read this upcoming holiday, and you want to be sure to finish it in one night, this could be a great, nostalgic option for you, as long as you don't mind the humor.
Rotondetta, nasino a patata, ingenua. Riuscirà Carly Beth a tornare sé stessa?
This is it! The Haunted Mask is my favourite out of all the Goosebumps books I've read so far. It's sooo fun! A spooky mask, Halloween setting, great writing, and.. character development? Listen, this is top-tier Goosebumps. If you're going to reread one book out of this series for nostalgia, it should be this one!
I started rereading the original sixty-two-book Goosebumps series just over three years ago now, in early June 2022. But alas, all good things come to an end. The Haunted Mask will likely be the last book I ever read in this series. You're probably wondering why, with the most logical guess being "because he's read them all." But that's not it. Over these past three years, I've read thirty-five of the sixty-two, just over half.
The reason I won't be reading any more is because this is the last one I have that isn't a collectible, and I just don't have any desire to go out and buy the remaining books. They've largely been a disappointment, and some are unspeakably bad, and among the worst books I've ever read. Let's see, what were some of the worst ones...
I think The Barking Ghost and Vampire Breath were by far the worst of the ones I read, both one star and both among the very worst books I've ever read. And so many of them were two stars, looking back at my ratings. So many stinkers.
Some were really great, in all fairness, but I never gave one a five star rating. The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight, Welcome to Camp Nightmare, Piano Lessons Can Be Murder, Night of the Living Dummy III, Egg Monsters From Mars, Beware, the Snowman, and The Blob That Ate Everyone were my favourites of the ones I read. I gave all of those four stars and would recommend them.
I might make a comeback someday and read some of the Goosebumps Series 2000 books, as I own about half of those (it's a twenty-five-book series), and I've heard those ones are a lot darker, but even if I did that I don't think it would be for years. I need a break from this stuff. A long break. Will I miss them? Sure. They've been a part of my life for the past three years now. I've read these amid the backdrop of brutal winters, Halloweens, and summer thunderstorms. I've read them at work on my lunch. I've read them on public transit. I've read them on vacations I've taken. They've just always been there, you know? I'll remember my time reading them.
It was an experience, and though a mostly negative one, it was one with bright spots. And even some of the dreadful books were fun to read just because of how bad they were. I'd tell people in my orbit about some nonsensical thing Stine put in the plot, or something that straight up just didn't make any sense, and we'd laugh about how stupid it was together. Sometimes hysterically. So I had fun, you guys. I had fun.
Unfortunately, I didn't really like my last Goosebumps book, The Haunted Mask, very much and that's a bummer. I know this is a classic and is loved by many in the community, but I just thought it was very average. So much of this book is just overwritten: probably half of it was just Carly Beth running around the streets while freaking out, pleading with the party store owner to sell her the mask or, later, to take it off for her, that kind of thing. Scenes that went on for way too long and made a lot of the book seem like needless filler. I must admit I did breathe a sigh of relief at the end when she finally got the mask off though, so I did feel the claustrophobia of her being stuck in there.
Anyway, here we are, my friends. The end of our collective three-year original Goosebumps series reading adventure. I hope you got some joy out of these reviews, and if you're ever looking for a laugh, you can always go back and read some of my reviews of the worst ones. It can be funny to read someone raging against a terrible book, and I think I did that with a few of these!
Until we meet again, in one of my other rambling reviews,
Excellent. This is frightening book and actually contained some pretty well-written passages.
Carly Beth (love the double name! Woot!) is a scaredy-cat. This wouldn't be so bad - except for the fact that everyone (her little brother, people at school, even her friends) thinks it is really funny to scare her. To make her jump and shriek and scream. It's easy to do. This leads to some pretty cruel practical jokes being played on Carly Beth - worms in her sandwich, etc.
Like most times when I read about children and teens who are bullied, I feel a bit concerned for the bullies. You do not know what you are messing with, I think. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. There's only so much a person can take before she eventually decides to start striking back.
And so it goes with Carly Beth.
Sick of being the butt of everyone's scare tactics, Carly Beth vows that this Halloween will be different.
Well, this year I won't be the one screaming, she thought. This year, I'll be the one making everyone else scream.
Carly Beth goes out to buy the scariest mask she can find. The man at the store warns her that she'll regret buying one of the scary masks he keeps in the hidden back room - but Carly Beth won't be dissuaded. The man reluctantly sells her the mask, and Carly Beth plans a fright night of epic revenge.
First, her little brother. Sneaking up on him to scare him, a masked Carly Beth is shocked at the deep, raspy voice that seems to emanate from her throat when she speaks. She's not consciously trying to change her voice at all. And the mask is hot. And tight. It closes down on her face like a second skin.
Borrowing a bust of her head that her mom made in art class, Carly impales it on a broomstick and heads out into the night.
Not only does she relish every scream and flinch inflicted by her scary face and rough growls, Carly Beth is seized by a strange mixture of anger and joy. She delights in terrifying people, causing them pain, and dominating over those smaller and weaker than her. And everyone is weaker than her, now. ...
I thought this book was amazingly well-done for the most part. Watching the transformation of a shy, timid, easily startled 11-year-old into a demon out for blood was fascinating and (I thought) pretty realistic. You can easily see how a simple desire to get revenge on some boys from class turns into an ugly demonic transformation. I like how slowly the mask tightens it grip on her, until she's unsure about where the mask ends and she begins.
I didn't even feel as disapproving of Carly Beth and her behavior as I should have been. Instead I gleefully watched as she became a little terror, stealing other children's candy and threatening to rip people's faces off. It only became scary (to me) when she starts to realize that she can't get the mask off - she might stay this way permanently.
I thought the explanation was beyond ridiculous, but then again, this is R.L. Stine, what do I expect? LOL But besides the ludicrous ending, the book built up great suspense and had some great scary moments. It also showcased some actually decent writing from Stine, something I'm not used to seeing from him.
The wind swirled around Carly Beth as if holding her in place. She felt like tossing her head back and howling. She felt like tearing off her coat and flying through the night. She felt like climbing a tree, leaping onto a roof, roaring up at the starless, black sky. She stood frozen for a long moment, letting the wind sweep around her. The boys were gone. They had fled in terror.
This book pretty much is the perfrct Goosebumps story to everyone, and I am slowly developing to really love and enjoy this book as I reread it more.
It follows our main character Carly Beth who wants to get a special mask for Halloween, mainly just to take revenge to friends/bullies and we do see how her attitude changes throughout the story while she is wearing the mask, reminds me a little bit of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde which is my favorite ideas in literature and that do helps me loving this book and it's spooky, not pretty much nightmare fueling in my opinion as I myself are kinda desentisized reading lots of horror but the book mainly high up it's score on the love aspect of it, the way Carly Beth deal with the situation she's in, it's very creative against how she is consumed by her own anger and bitterness as the story goes.
I really love it and I can now say this is one of my favorite Goosebumps stories and also, for a lot of people, everyone's favorite Goosebumps book!
As a kid, these books we're better than junk food to me. I'd read goosebumps like crazy. Though I don't remember much of what took place in The Haunted Mask, I definitely recall the feeling I had while experiencing such an amazing story. I wasn't necessarily scared by any of R.L Stine's novels, but freaked out for sure. There was just a certain thrill that came with reading goosebumps for every kid.
I spent a month re-reading all 62 original Goosebumps books to see if they still hold up today, you can check out my 3.5 hour vlog here: https://youtu.be/2C73xc1FS5o

Carly Beth is sick of being the kid that is constantly teased by the boys in her class. They know she scares easily, so Chuck and Steve make it their aim to make Carly Beth jump on a daily basis. One day, after being humiliated for what Carly Beth feels is the last time, she runs home, vows to get her own back and wishes she wasn’t so easily spooked. She wishes, that just once...she could scare Chuck and Steve the way that they scare her.....
Her luck is in.....its Halloween.....and there’s some new masks for sale....
A delightfully creepy and tense story from kids horror favorite R.L.Stine. Perfectly twisted with a moral lesson, and with the trademark cliffhanger at the end.
There was a girl named Carly Beth staying along with her friend Sabrina.Every one liked to scare Carly Beth[specially Chuck and Steve liked to scare her].One day at school when it was lunch time Chuck smiled at Carly and gave her a sandwich saying that he don't want it.When she bit it,she felt something as funny and sticky.Oh!!!She ate a worm!!A real earthworm !!!!!!Sabrina was laughing too.Laughter followed her home. When she went home her mother showed her a head.A head made by a mother made from "Plaster of Paris ".Now it was Halloween. She is planning to frighten Chuck and Steve. So she went to the shop of masks. In the shop there were no such scary masks, but she went to another room ,there were many disgusting masks. She argued with the shopkeeper and bought the most ugliest mask. After frightening Chuck and Steve ,she tried to remove it,but it didn't move. Then she realised there were no ending in between her skin and the mask!!!!!!!!She went to the shop of the masks and told the shopkeeper to remove it.His face was frowning ,he said"this is not a mask.these are real faces that's why I argued to you!!!".Carly was surprised. She screamed-what?."Uh-oh.You awakened all them!!!"he said."Only a symbol of love could destroy them"he added. Then he ran for his life.Carly remembered the plaster of Paris head. She took it and prayed. After a few seconds she opened her eyes and saw that every thing was right. She ran home, puffing the mask inside her pocket. When she was resting her brother Noah said in a deep raspy voice"How do I look in your mask?"
While this doesn’t rank amongst my favourite Goosebumps story it is still a classic and a pretty great story. The only problem I have with it is that I find Carly Beth such an insufferable, annoying child that I kind of want to strangle her. She deserves everything she goes through and I was kind of rooting for her to suffer more. Maybe that makes me terrible but I just can’t help it! I do REALLY love the whole idea of the story though, I know I’m making it sound like I hate it but I don’t. Absolutely ADORE the story, it’s downright spooky and attention grabbing and the ending is pretty perfect. So I guess to sum it up, A+ on the story and F for Carly Beth.
Goosebumps were treasure as a kid and I decided I wanted to read this to my newborn. He falls asleep to me reading. So I decided to grab some books that I remember as a child. Goosebumps.
They are still chilling as ever but never really got the message untill now. Maybe as kids we don’t look for the message but the haunted mask was all about revenge and how it can backfire.
I lied when I said Night of the Living Dummy was my favorite GB book. The Haunted Mask is. I forgot how freaky this one was. You could really get the feeling that the mask was changing poor Carly Beth.
I was a bit of a scaredy cat as a child, so Goosebumps isn’t a series I dabbled in much. But it’s a series that my almost 30-year-old cousin still dearly loves, and he convinced me to give them a go as an adult with plenty of horror now under my readerly belt. He chose 4 of his favorites for me to read over the course of the month of October, one per week. The Haunted Mask was his first selection.
This was so much more fun than I expected. The pacing was great, and the premise made total sense for the age of the protagonist. I didn’t absolutely adore Carly Beth, but I found her plight sympathetic. She felt like a wholly believable 11-year-old girl. Her determination to be the scarer for once instead of the scared was relatable. And the mask she used to attain her revenge? Incredibly creepy.
What I didn’t expect was the presence of a moral to the story. Stine did a brilliant job of not beating his young readers over the head with said moral, but instead allowing it to subtly permeate the narrative. Here, Stine guides his readers to an understanding that they should value who they are, flaws and all, and to value the love in their lives instead of dwelling on the ways they’ve been slighted. I also appreciated how things ended, with everything wrapping up nicely while also leaving a door open for further creepiness off-page in that particular story.
I enjoyed The Haunted Mask so much more than I thought I would, and I’m looking forward to more nostalgia-laced Halloween reads in the Goosebumps series.
The Haunted Mask is the eleventh book in the Goosebumps series. It is a little fun, a lot creepy, and a tad scary. Loved it.
I am re-reading this series for nostalgic reasons and having fun doing so.
The Goosebumps series was a staple in our house. My kids absolutely loved them, and to say I read these books with them once is an understatement. We read them many times as each of my three kids became old enough to read them. They still have them and are getting to read them with their kids.
The book is well written, and the narrative is engaging.
