Moments Two

FBI agent Kimberley Reynolds is in Florence, Arizona to interview a murderer. Her task is to find out if there is something supernatural about the case.

Moments is a term used by Ben Aaronovitch for very short works of fiction, that he doesn't like to call short stories. He adds that they are not likely to be incorporated into any longer work.

Ben Aaronovitch's career started with a bang writing for Doctor Who, subsided in the middle and then, as is traditional, a third act resurgence with the bestselling Rivers of London series.

Born and raised in London he says that he'll leave his home when they prise his city out of his cold dead fingers.

Meh.

On Aaronovitch's blog he writes this was a cut fragment. Good call.

It doesn't mesh with Agent Reynolds' character. Whispers Underground was shooting her gun in anger? Don't you remember the professional shooter's stance she used? The command barked at Peter to 'get down'? The editing is sloppy ("the truth is nobody really know the why" and it feels like a non-American trying to write an American. I would have preferred not having this one in the canon.

Oh, yes: I completely read this before. Thanks, Goodreads, for so admirably not fulfilling your raison d'etre.

This is a "moment" written from the perspective of Agent Reynolds and takes place in Arizona. It makes me want something I didn't know I wanted--to see Peter, Nightingale, and Co. cross the pond and take on a weird American bullocks case. I would love to get Peter's takes on all the things that cross his path here on US soil, the weird bullocks especially.

OK, so for completeness' sake and orientation: the author penned short stories, novellas and ... "moments". In his own words, they are bits and pieces that conjure a certain atmosphere and linger in the back of his head and when he was asked to do a short story collection, he wrote these "moments" down, too. This is the third and so far last "moment" (don't let the GR description fool you).

Hm. In this one, we're following the American FBI agent from the third book (which makes you wonder why the story takes place after volume 4 but whatever) as she is staying in a motel during her next assignment. You see, even by American standards, the number of shootings is getting out of hand so she is tasked with finding out of there is a supernatural cause to them which is why she is sent to interview a murderer.
But everything she encounters (from her room's wallpaper and bedsheet to the people) is just ... ordinary.

Unfortunately, I gotta say that this left me pretty much cold. I liked Reynolds' banter with Peter in the 3rd novel but here, she was just another American contemplating Jesus and the only flickering interest was the comment about the shootings and the prisons (them being the "economy" of certain areas).

And we have another moment but i have to say there is no way would have guessed that this is agent Reynolds if it weren't in the title. I guess people aren't always how they present them self but this was almost on one-eighty.

A REALLY short moment in the life of a US agent we saw in the previous books.

It is what it is. No real point except a bit of character building.

This one was interesting in that eyes are now opened and it really makes a person think, much like this character. I don't know what I would like better, all the shootings being supernatural based or plain people doing evil.

Just ok. I liked Reynolds in Whispers Underground but less interesting in this.

It appears that the mass shootings in America are weighing heavily even upon our kin over in England. Aaronovitch wrote a "Moment" (Aaronovitch's term for these extra-short stories) for Agent Reynolds from Whispers Under Ground, where she is being sent to investigate people who have been incarcerated for mass shootings. It's a melancholy story, but a good one. Other people have criticized it for having the wrong 'voice' for Reynolds...and it's been too long for me to really have a strong opinion, but I don't remember her having such a strong faith. These "Moments" make me wish Aaronovitch had the time to flesh out all his secondary characters with their own series because they seem to have interesting tales to tell.

This “moment” (Aaronovitch’s term for a short story - actually just a scene featuring a character from the series) is from the POV of Agent Reynolds from Whispers Under Ground. Since she is a fellow American, I was excited to read a bit from her POV. Several reviewers here were surprised by her “voice” being so different from her character in WUG, particularly the fact that she evidently holds a strong Christian Faith when we saw no evidence of it in WUG. Personally, I do not find that incongruous. Not all American Christians are the loud, praying-in-public, sermonizing type.

I’d love to see Reynolds in more books. More Anglo-American cooperation in magic policing, please!

This was alright - I actually couldn't remember who Reynolds was and the significance of this character within Rivers of London series. So I wasn't particularly attached to this 'moment'.

Moments

This will be a conbined review of three works by Ben Aaronovitch, Nightingale: London 1966, Reynolds – Florence, Az. 2014, and Tobias Winter - Meckenheim 2012. These are what Aaronovitch calls "Moments', and you can read them free on his web site. These three are, as far as I know, the only ones that exist as of this date (19-Mar-2022). As you can see, the titles all have the form "Name -- Place, Date". Each is a brief introduction to the magical law enforcement officer named. They are not actually stories, since nothing really happens. We just get a brief glimpse of the named officer and his/her thoughts. I have read only the first two novels of the Rivers of London series. I have already met Nightingale, who shows up in the first one. Reynolds and Winter were new to me.

In two of these moments, we learn that Nightingale is a bigger deal than we really get any inkling of in the first two novels, where he seems a bumbling, ineffective old man out of his time. Apparently, however, he led a group of officers who revered him, "The chaps have always needed to set me on a plinth this way", as he puts it. In Moments 3, the German office responsible for magical law enforcement (KDA = "Department for Complex and Unspecific Matters", "K" is obviously "Komplex" and "A" Abteilung, no idea what the "D" stands for) is utterly dismayed to learn that Nightingale has taken an apprentice (that would be Peter Grant, of course). This is the reaction:

‘The Nightingale has taken an apprentice,’ I said.

‘Ah,’ said the Chief. ‘That’s unfortunate. How certain is this?’

‘The Embassy has confirmed it.’

‘Shit, shit, shit,’ she said.

So, yeah, Nightingale is a big deal.

Reynolds, of Moments 2, is an FBI agent. (I surmise FBI because she mentions training at Quantico.) She's just showed up at the small town of Florence, Arizona to interview a prisoner. She struck me as a fairly authentic portrayal of an American.

Kimberly Reynolds, after her adventures in London has returned to the US and is now drawn to the stranger occurrences, the possibly supernatural. This 'moment' sees her in a motel, tomorrow she is going to interview murderers at a prison to see if there is any supernatural influence.
The most interesting part of this moment is hearing Reynolds' internal voice... I don't think it was what I pictured when I have come across the character before.

This short story is a little glimpse into the life of Agent Reynolds, who we met in an earlier Rivers of London setting. Back in America, Agent Reynolds is considering what happened in the sewers of London and her new role investigating the paranormal.

This "moment" (or scene) takes place sometime after we first met FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds in Whispers Underground but sometime before she contacts Peter in The Hanging Tree and tells him what she's been up to since last they met. Somewhat out of character for what we know about Agent Reynolds.

A moment, like a scene that was deleted to keep the time down, or because even though it showed a depth of character not otherwise seen, didn't fit the pace.

It is rare for an author to let moments like this into the world, and while it is, as everyone says, very different than any of the RoL books, I enjoyed it. A relatively minor character got to come out and say hello without her usual mask.

Another very short piece, but this time it's actually a story rather than a fragment, which makes it more satisfying to read. Actually, it reads as if it could be the introduction to a novel. From what the author says, such is not likely to eventuate, but there is some semblance of plot and motivation, so, you know, it's an improvement on the associated Nightingale piece.

My fault that I have only a vague memory of this character from the books.
This actually had me Googling Florence, AZ. I've covered a fair amount of Arizona (my dad's from there) but never been through there.

2021 short story around 167. Short - very short. This finds Agent Reynolds in Arizona - on assignment to interview another mass shooter to determine if the supernatural was involved. Kim is tired - there is no bugaboo, but only tired people, very ordinary people who commit these atrocities.

A brief interlude featuring Agent Reynolds from Whispers Underground, now back in the USA investigating whether there are any supernatural reasons for seemingly normal people shooting up their families, towns, etc.
