Zack ist sofort klar: Die neue Vertretungslehrerin muss ein Geist sein! Doch leider ist er ihr Lieblingsschüler. Und für Zack beginnen Schulstunden des Grauens...
Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.
R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. In the early 1990s, Stine was catapulted to fame when he wrote the unprecedented, bestselling Goosebumps® series, which sold more than 250 million copies and became a worldwide multimedia phenomenon. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
Who's Been Sleeping in My Grave will likely be the last Ghosts of Fear Street book I ever read, but at least I'm going out with a great one. The story follows protagonist Zack Pepper as he becomes suspicious of his new substitute teacher, Miss Gaunt. Zack suspects she is a ghost, and that something horrible may have happened to his regular teacher Miss Prescott. Zack quickly becomes Miss Gaunt's favourite student, but is she really a ghost? And does she have something sinister in mind for Zack and his friends?
This is one of the best middle grade horror books I've ever read, in any series and by any author. R.L. Stine, despite having his name on all of the books in this series in huge letters, didn't write any of them. They were written by a variety of authors, and this one was written by Stephen Roos. This is just such an impressive book. It's wonderfully written for what it is, and the story is very entertaining and actually coherent, unlike most other middle grade horror books I've read. And the characters are excellent here. Not one dimensional like they usually are in these sorts of books, but well developed and memorable; Miss Gaunt is one of the greatest middle grade horror characters I've ever read, and I stand by that. Her character was authentic and amazing.
And just the way the author captured the feelings of so many things here so perfectly: the atmosphere of Halloween night, what it's like to be a teacher's pet, the fear of death and ghosts. It was all brilliantly done in this book. This is one to check out.
Uno de mis libros favoritos de la colección Fantasmas de Fear Street. Lo leí en el momento adecuado, ya que toda la historia se ambienta en la época de Halloween.
#2018ReadingChallenge #PopSugar 24. A book about or set on Halloween
Zack Pepper is deathly afraid of ghosts, so much so that all kids tease and try to scare him. Especially his best friend Chris. When a substitute teacher mysteriously shows up to teach his class, a very old woman who dresses in old fashioned clothes and a veil and whose touch is icy cold, Zach soon comes to believe she's actually a ghost. And she has a fondness for him and big plans for his future. One of the ghostwritten Fear Street books, this one was actually quite well written, and was scarier than the majority of Stine's GB and FS stories.
I enjoyed this one and the best so far from the batch of GOFS books I've read, the last ones I've read is terrible and two that are good enough but flawed, this one however, is excellent.
The story in here is coherent and actually a more creepy one in the sense of reading this as a grown up and seeing a parallel into the reality about adults to children. Characterization is better in here too, more convincing dialogue and actions than the dumbed own books from the last Ghosts of Fear Street books I've read.
One cool thing is that aside for a small point that this as solid next to the better Goosebumps books, this one didn't waste it's time from the “You Gotta Believe Me” trope relating to the situation where the character is in although the opposing thing that the main character did do is smart in comparison, I did appreciate that it didn't lead to the usual tired formula of Stine's books.
Personally, I would give this book a three out of five stars. I enjoyed bits and pieces of the book but some parts were a bit childish. Granted, the book is made for young tweens and children, I still expected more from the story. The story starts with Zack who is an R.L. Stine version of the boy who cried wolf. Zack is constantly 'crying" ghost and lying that he sees them. When he is suspicious of his substitute teacher for being a ghost, Zack spends parts of the book trying to get his classmates and the people around him to believe him. When no one believes him due to his previous lies, Zack takes it upon himself to prove that his substitute teacher is a ghost. This book had some good plot points and was a good take to "the boy who cried wolf" story. Ghosts of fear street are an honorable take to R.L Stine's Goosebumps stories. Overall, the story had a few plot holes and could have gave us more. With that said I did enjoy the book overall.
This book was alright. I think Zack is kinda weird for thinking his sub is a ghost. Although she actually was. Something I've realized is that all goosebumps books are the same. Just kinda basic in my opinion. I wouldn't read this book again given the choice. The ending is kind of weird because Chris forgets about the ghost even though he saw it. Chris also kinda seems like a cruel kid. Terrorizing Zack all the time. This book was okay at best.
Who’s Been Sleeping in My Grave? Zack thinks he has the secret weapon to be free from terror forever. So, he’s walking to school reading the book “Power Kids” You see, Zack lives in town where ghosts play hide and seek with kids in the woods and there’s a burnt out mansion on Fear Street where its said ghosts have lived for years.
On the way to school, he’s stopped by his “friend” Chris who tells him about a ghost dog. He says about a week ago hr and his dad started to hear howling in the middle of the night. They looked for the dog but never found it. Then last night his dad was taking the garbage out and the ghost dog lunged at him. His dad used the garbage can lid as a shield but the dog jumped right through it. Zack asks what the dog looks like and he has pure white with a black spot on one side. His dad is sure it’ll be back tonight. Then they see the dog coming toward them.
It's a joke. It’s his cousin’s dog. Zack vows no more falling for dumb ghost stories. They meet up with Zack’s best friend (Marcy Novi). There’s talk about a new substitute. Another girl Debbie says she’s a ghost. They walk into the classroom and Zack sees that it’s true. She doesn’t have a face only two dark spots where her eyes should be and she hovers above the floor. But she’s wearing a veil and a fluffy white skirt that hangs to the floor and white shoes. She’s also wearing shiny white gloves.
When she removes the veil, her face is as pale as her clothes and it seems frozen. She introduces herself as Miss Gaunt. Homer starts to get agitated and go real fast on his hamster wheel. Amazingly, Miss Guant calms him right down. Since his friends have been calling him a dweed, Zack tries to prove he isn’t. When Miss Gaunt asked what they do after attendance, he says they go outside for recess and then they go eat luch. The teacher calls him out for being a smart aleck and threatens to have him write a 100 times I won’t be a smart aleck. She makes him say he didn’t mean it and says she knows he didn’t. She didn’t sense that from him and then tells him she has her eyes on him.
Zack is teased by the others about the teacher being in love with him at lunch. Zack, Chris, and Marcy go back to the classroom to give Homer some lunch. (Zack is assigned to take care of him the whole week) and they know something immediately is wrong. All his hair has turned white. Miss Caunt explains it away as a vitamin deficiency or either a winter survival tactic. They’re about to start the history lesson and Mrs. Guant calls on Zachariah (as she insists on calling him) to be George Washington. It’s then he notices she has a purple moving blotch on her neck. It’s a worm. She just picks it up and throws it in the waste basket. No one notices. Later, Zack reads Power Kids and is advised that You see what you expect to see.
And you always expect to see something scary. The next day, she calls him up to the black board to do a decimal problem. He tells her he can’t because he doesn’t know how. She encourages him and he does the problem but he knows something else (or someone else) controlled his arm. Miss Gaunt tells him well done, dismisses him to his seat, and then gives him a wink. Zack tries to tell Chris and Marcy his theory that Miss Guant is a ghost, but they don’t believe him. He forgets his luch and has to go back to the room, he opens his desk and … Miss Gaunt’s white glove flutters to the floor.
Chris brings up their teacher (Miss Prescott) says they can have a party on Friday. So, Miss Guant starts to make a list on the board. Only she keeps dropping the chalk. She says she has arthritis. She’s holding the hand she usually writes with. When one of the other students asks about having arthritis in her other hand she tells him to let’s keep their mind on the list. They go through all the things they’ll need (cookies, cider, decorations, plates and cups). When they get to games, she suggests trying the new store Shop Till You Drop but not to get anything to horrifying. She says to take Marcy and Zack with him.
She tells Zack to stay after and asks if he has something of hers. He’s confused and says no. She says she saw him put it in his pocket and he remembers the glove. He apologizes for her arthritis and she says what arthritis. She says she just told Bobby that because he was too nosy. He hands her the glove and she takes her hand out of her pocket. It doesn’t have any skin. Just bones.
Zack is trying to tell his friends about Miss Gaunt’s hand but they just think she’s old and bony. They get to the store. It’s called Shop till You Drop Dead. The store is extremely dark and no one can tell how big it is. Then they notice there are beetles all over the floor. But they’re only plastic. The shelves were crammed with all kinds of strange stuff. A jar full of glass eyeballs. A withered hand. A mesh bag filled with small bones. And some cool masks, Chris disappears and Zack and Marcy grab masks. Zack is determined to scare him first. They round a coarner and find a strange man with the head the size of a basketball. he pasty skin on his face stretched right up over his bald scalp. He wore a shiny black cape that trailed to the floor. Chris is laying unconscious at his feet. A trickle of blood runs from his mouth.
It's a joke. Chris yells “Gotcha”. The man is Mr. Sangfwad the owner of the store. He says Evangeline must have sent them and she speaks very highly of Zachariah. He says they’ve been friends in Shadyside forever, but Zack says he’s never seen either of them. The owner just says life is strange. His pet is a rat named Phoebe but he says she’s sweet. They get everything they need (games and decorations). Chris has to leave because the owner takes too long getting bags. When he gets back he asks if they’re sure they have everything. He knows Zack wouldn’t want to disappoint her.
Zack decides to follow Gaunt and prove to his friends he’s right. They follow her on her bike and find out she lives on Fear Street. She ends up going to a graveyard. They follow her but lost her in all the thick mist. Marcy trips over something, gets up, and then starts to run fast. Zack hears her yelling out HELP ME! Then she disappears from sight. Zack runs after her and then falls. Marcy is there and says she thinks they’ve fallen into an empty grave. Luckily they’re alone. Zack thought maybe Miss Guant might have been down there but Marcy says she was going in the other direction. Now they have to figure out how to get out. Marcy gives Zack a boost and then he drags her out.
Then they see EVANGELINE GAUNT BORN 1769 DIED 1845 REST IN PEACE. It’s *her* grave. They make it out of the maze and agree that tomorrow they’ll meet and warn all the other kids about Miss Gaunt. But Marcy doesn’t show up. Her desk is empty and when Miss Gaunt calls roll she says she remembered she’ll be out for a few days. Another student asks why and if she’s sick but Miss Guant just replies she wouldn’t want anyone to know her families business. Zack skips school and goes to Marcy’s house. He knows something is wrong. Then he sees one of the windows is shattered.
There’s a man there. He says he’s there to fix the window. The family left this morning on a family emergency but that’s all he knows. Back at school, Zack decides its time to tell about Miss Gaunt. So, he passes Chris a note. Unfortunately, Miss Gaunt sees and demands he give the note to her. Zack prays that Chris will throw the note out the window or swallow it. Anything but give it to her. He gives it to her. She reads it. Then she walks up and down the ailes asking students why they think someone would say something like that. She questions them about how they think she feels and what she should do to the person who wrote it. Zack is thinking C’mon bell ring. She tells them not to worry. She won’t pursue this further but just know whoever wrote it hurt her feelings. The bell rings and Zack hops up but she stops him and tells him to stay after.
She tells him she knows that a lot of things scare him. Which is why he bought Power Kids. She noticed him in the bookstore and thought what a fine boy. He’d be perfect. She was about to take over another class but then she saw him and she knew she had to arrange a way for his teacher to come down with a nasty cold. She takes the note and puts it on his desk and says but she’s disappointed in him. She tells him that he needs to work on his spelling. Careful only has one l. She knows he followed her to the grave and found out the truth. That’s how she knew he wrote the note. He asks where Marcy is and she says she doesn’t know why he had to drag her along. She could have ruined everything. Then she says no more about Marcy.
She gives him a gift and says its because he’s her favorite student. She tells him to open it later. She says it’s a good thing no one believed the note. The principal wouldn’t be too happy if he knew she was a ghost. Zack promises he won’t tell and says she’s a wonderful teacher and doesn’t want her to get in trouble. She agrees and says it’s not fair that she can only leave her grave every 10 years. She says what’s worse is at twelve she has to return to her grave on Halloween that’s why she has to enjoy her time while she can-especially the party-.
She says the highlight of the party for her is picking her favorite student. Every 10 years she picks a student to take back to the grave with her. Zack protest that he doesn’t want to go, but she says she needs him. He’s so much brighter than the other kids. He guessed what she was. He makes it to the door but she calls out Halloween. Midnight. He’ll join them in the dark (dark) world of ghosts.
Zack rushes home and decides to just stay in the house until Halloween is over. Curiosity gets the best of him and he opens Miss Gaunt’s present. It’s a book called Book of the Dead. The book has a dedication “For Zachariah. Welcome! Your teacher forever.” It starts to pulse. Zack throws the book in the trash. Zack can’t sleep that night and keeps imagining himself lying a grave with thousands of worms under him. The next morning, he tells his mom he’s sick and puts a hot washcloth on his forehead. By the afternoon, she says his fever is down and gets him to help her hand out candy. But Miss Gaunt shows up at his door.
It turns out to be Chris. Chris starts to tell him how Mrs. Gaunt seemed heartbroken and how they’re teacher will be back next week. He says he passed Marcy’s house and the window is fixed. Zack tries again to tell Chris about Miss Gaunt, seeing her grave, and her wanting to take him back to the grave but all Chris does is laugh. Zack’s mom hears the laughing and asks if Zack feels better and he says no he feels worse. So, she sends him back up to bed and Chris leaves. Zack hears the door and goes to answer it thinking it’s Chris again, but it’s Miss Gaunt-the real one-. She drags him off -telling his brother Kevin she’s taking him to a party-. Zack tries to tell him she’s going to turn him into a ghost and she admits she is. He tells them to have fun.
Zack tries to call out to different people he passes but no one believes him. They run into Mr. Mr. Sangfwad who turns out to be a ghost too. He tells Zack at midnight he’ll be a ghost just like them. She takes him deeper into the graveyard. And then, finally, we stopped. At a grave. The open grave Marcy and I had seen fore. Only this time, a coffin rested within it. And the lid was open. Waiting. Waiting for us. Zack tries to get away but she catches him and he gets pushed into the coffin. Zack tries to crawl out. He ends up ripping Miss Gaunt’s veil. He pulls himself up by a root. Then he sees she has no face. Just a bony skull holding a few wisps of gray hair. And worms. Slimy purple worms. Crawling in and out of the sockets where her eyes should have been.
She tells him too look at him. Because he’s about to look just like her. The clock strikes 12 and Zack hears footsteps. Then there’s another Miss Gaunt. It’s Chris. Zack pushes Miss Gaunt into the coffin and slams the lid down. With the help of Chris they get the coffin closed, the ground stops rumbling, and the clock strikes. Halloween is over. By the next day, Zack goes to Megan’s house and she says she got a call after they came back that her grandmother was sick. But when they got to her grandmothers house she said she never made the call.
Chris seems to have forgotten all about what happened and says he isn’t scared of ghost and doesn’t believe in them. We see that Zack rescued the Book of the Dead and has turned the rubber snake Chris scared him with at his birthday party and turned it real and is planning on using it on Chris since he claims nothing scares him.
Rating: 5 Just average! This one just didn’t have a lot of *scare*. Miss Gaunt was rather tame as ghosts go. And the ending well I’ve read better.

I didn't have high hopes for this one. Loved to read it when I was a kid, but being a kid, I didn't look for high quality, so... I expected this to be nauseatingly terrible - a bit like the cover promises. It wasn't that bad at all. Up to half of the book I would have given this one 3 stars, but sadly in the second half it lost even its mediocrity. Too bad. Still, I don't feel like I've completely wasted my time...
I had completely forgotten this series even existed until I was reminded of it the other day. It’s the perfect combination of Goosebumps and Fear Street, and although I didn’t read very many of them as a kid (due to my library not carrying a lot of them) I still remember liking these books a lot.
This one was just a lot of fun to re-read, and now I can’t wait to read even more of these books!
So it seems that the GoFS semi-banger streak continues with Who’s Been Sleeping in my Grave. My expectations were kinda that this would be average, and it was for a huge chunk of it, but it picked up around the end and made up for things a little bit. My biggest upside is Miss Gaunt as a villain. Her character is genuinely kinda frightening and I like her strange tone and weird design. I think the climax is generally really good and there’s some solid writing there in particular. There are some great moments throughout the entire story and the ending is quite good and wraps up the story nicely even if some things were left kinda wonky. The characters all around are okay and there’s some great atmosphere, and it’s also a Halloween story, which is an obvious plus. As for negatives, this book is pretty bland for a majority of it. I could tell it was gonna pick up, and boy did it with the confrontation scene before Halloween, but until then, the story was trope filled and really average feeling with only a few standout bits within those, say, eighty or so pages. Miss Gaunt’s motive is just stupid, her only notable flaw I feel. Some things in the book are basically pointless inclusions and filler for an already short book. The execution of the idea could’ve been a whole lot better too, and there’s surprisingly a good few big grammar mistakes. And this is merely a nitpick, but Zach’s mom is stupid: her son, who she knows was sick earlier (even though they were faking it, but that’s besides the point), is allowed to pass out candy. Infect the neighborhood, why don’t we? Overall, 8/10. It’s quite good, and definitely a high eight-out-of-ten. Most of my downsides are just nitpicks that peck away at the score little by little.
When beginning this book the suspense continued to build up as I became more and more frightened along with the character in the book. More and more odd things continuously happened making the story more interesting and made me want to keep reading. I enjoy this book because of how interesting it is and how easy it is to read because it keeps you interested. I also enjoyed how the book keeps you questioning whether or not there is or is not something odd going on with the substitute teacher. The only thing in the book I didn't necessarily enjoy was the fact that the suspense continued building for a very long time. Although this is not a bad thing it just felt like nothing was being figured out for a long time because the characters couldn't figure out what was really going on. Other than this one downfall, I really enjoyed this book and even though I usually can't understand what I'm reading this book was overall easy to understand and very eventful. I also thought the ending was very eventful but I also believe there was many other possible endings that would have been good. Overall I did enjoy this book and I would read more books like this one. I would recommend this to others as well because I personally never get very interested in books so if other are like that as well I would definitely recommend they try reading this book because it is quick and easy but still leaves you wondering.
Quite a typical RL Stine book. A perfect middle grade spooky book for quick October read! Zack's class has a substitute teacher. After acting quite strange, Zack knows there's something wrong with her. Since he is known to be a scaredy cat, no one believes him. He knows he has to prove that this time he isn't crying wolf. We quickly get to know Zack and his friends Chris and Macey. Chris likes to scare Zack and Macey tends to take Zack's side more. The whole plot is pretty spooky. We get a peek at Fear Street and part of the book takes place in the cemetery. I think it's the perfect amount of spooky for the target audience without going overboard. The ending is in RL Stine fashion. Everything seems tied up nicely, but then there's a little detail at the very end that leaves something open ended. Thank you to Simon Kids for a copy of this one!
Zachariah is convinced that his new substitute teacher, Ms. Gaunt, is a real live ghost and she seems to like him the best of all!
I loved Goosebumps and Fear Street as a kid and have been rereading them with my kiddo recently. I hadn’t heard of the ‘Ghosts of Fear Street’ even though they were originally published back in the 90’s but saw them at the library and decided to check them out. Very similar to Goosebumps. Similar simple writing style. Fun and spooky!
Oh, what to say about this one... I'm not too keen on it. In keeping with the Stine tradition that so many of his books seem to adhere to, the title hasn't anything to do with the story. I can't quite put a finger on why I didn't care for the book, it just... it felt like the resolutions came easy, even for a children's book.
Last book of the year had to be something fun and light hearted. I used to be a 5th grade teacher and I really liked this one! A ghost teacher who wants to turn you into a ghost so she can tech you forever? Hilarious and scary to a kid lol. It was a fun read. Staying in my long term collection of favorite goosebumps books.

Ok... but here's the thing. They fingerprint for schools. The most unrealistic part about this book is that the school hired Ms. Gaunt as a substitute. She's a certain level of creepy around the kids that screams criminal record. This school clearly needs some nosey PTA moms to look into this lady.
So far I'm loving the Ghosts of Fear Street series. Scary stories from the 90's are simply the best. Even though these books weren't written by R.L. Stine, they're still fun stories to read. I like how these stories are nostalgic. In one part, the mother said she was going to look up a number in the phone book. Ah, memories.
Not as good as the first book, but a fun read nonetheless. Everybody had weird substitutes, so the story hook works well, for pretty much all readers. It did suffer a bit in the 3rd act, but with the rate these thing were being cranked out, it's definitely one of the better works from Stine.
It was a good book, but I thought it was lacking interest in the beginning. I liked the ending where she grabbed him to her grave. Gave claustrophobic to me when he's panicking to get out of the hole in the casket scene.

This is a very good book, even though it’s old it is still good every time you read it. The main character is called Zach and he nearly gets pulled into a dead teachers grave for her to teach him forever

Starting out, this book wasn't too bad. At times it even got a little spooky. But I went into this book after reading several other R.L. Stine books, so I expected some twists. I expected things not to be as they seem. This expectation led to me feeling that the ending was a letdown.
