Jenny Parks is a scientific illustrator that also happens to be a shameless nerd, with a penchant for drawing animals, dinosaurs, imaginary creatures… and occasionally, people as cats. Somehow, she found herself with a bit of internet fame with the illustration ‘Doctor Mew’, and has been baffled ever since. With a BFA in illustration from the California College of the Arts, and a graduate degree in Science Illustration from UC Santa Cruz, she now resides in Denver, CO as a freelance illustrator, fulfilling her destiny to make a living drawing cute, fuzzy things.
Her published work includes variant covers for Marvel, covers for the Action Lab "Hero Cats" comics, and Star Trek Cats.
Very cute and very short. I borrowed this from my library and read it on my Kindle Fire. Too bad it wasn't longer. This is fully illustrated and I read it in just a few minutes. Star Trek and cat fans will love it.
This book doesn't have a plot. It is basically classic scenes from Star Trek with cats taking the roles. It's cute, most because of the type of cats chosen for each of the classic Trek characters. It is fun.
This is literally the best thing ever and I need to own it yesterday. While there's no story, it's basically just recreations of famous scenes, but who cares? There are awesomely drawn cats. As Trek characters. What more do you need in life? Hopefully, Ms. Parks will have sequels with Next Gen and all the other incarnations of ST, and possibly some other fandoms. Buffy cats? OMG, I needz it! I'll try to add some pictures later if I don't procrastinate too long.
This was so cute! I love Star Trek TOS and cats, so I figured this would be a win-win. It's just a shame that there wasn't more to it. Extremely short.
The illustrations included various episode screenshots: the kitty version of Kirk fighting the Gorn, Kitty Kirk in his green shirt on top of the pile of tribbles, Kitty Uhura singing while the cat version of Spock was strumming his instrument, the kitty version of Ricardo Montalban confronting Kirk, and more moments.
Amazing! This book surprised me by being extraordinarily well thought out. It doesn't simply rest on its gimmick; the entire cast being made of cats would be strange enough to fill a book, but Jenny Parks was meticulous in being true to the original series. She takes the time to find the right way to create each scene and each character. I could tell, even from the cover, which cat was Sulu—he looks like Sulu! The McCoy cat looks like McCoy. Spock is Spock. Kirk is Kirk. It's amazing how well everything fits together. If the stories were about cats, they would be about these cats. I looked at one of the pictures inside, and I could tell immediately which cat was a Klingon and which cat was a human.
Although this book is more an homage than a comedy, it nevertheless has its funny moments. Many of the illustrations recall specific moments in favorite episodes, and some of these moments are very cute indeed. (I did laugh out loud at one of the Tribbles pictures.) A handy chart at the end of the book lists the episodes reenacted.
If I could give it more than five stars, I would. Parks put a lot of work into this, and it shows.
(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through Library Thing's Early Reviewers program.)
A general rule of thumb: you can make just about anything better by adding cats, and Star Trek is no exception.
In Star Trek Cats, illustrator Jenny Parks recreates famous scenes from the original run of the show using cats. (I'm not a huge fan, but my dad is and he recognized most of the scenes. Plus there's a handy little cheat sheet in the back of the book.)
Kirk is an orange tabby, Chekov is a Russian Blue (could possibly be the distant cousin of Lemmy, my British Shorthair), Scotty is a Scottish Fold, and so on.
Really the only negative about this book is that there's not more of it! It's pretty tiny at 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" and 64 pages. I'd love to see an entire episode reimagined this way (though copyright issues probably make it a non-starter; still, it's nice to dream).
As Spock would say (probably with a raised eyebrow), it is eminently logical to infer that Star Trek fans are cat lovers, while Star Wars fans are dog lovers. What that says about the quality and intellectual rigour of the two respective franchises is, of course, open to debate. (Let us add here that a cat never would have shot first … it would have been sleeping behind the bar.) I was a bit hesitant to take a peek at this short book as I thought it might be insufferably twee … However, my heart kind of jumped into my throat at the first two illustrations: The Starfleet logo, with a silhouette of a cat inside it. And then a picture of a cat sleeping on top of a pile of Tribbles. Another beautiful picture of the crew being teleported planet-side shows them batting the energy particles playfully as the energising process begins. Jenny Parks gives a full list of the original series ST episodes from which she drew inspiration. And that final picture: of the good old Enterprise heading off into the darkness, with a giant cat’s face looming against the stars, promising adventure, mystery, and play. Exquisite. P.S. I see Star Trek: The Next Generation Cats is coming out as well ...
Star Trek Cats is exactly what the title promises. It's Star Trek scenes drawn with cats. It even contains an episode list so you know where the cat-ified scenes came from. It's the original Star Trek and not Next Generation, so no Picard (though I bet he would make a nice Sphinx)
My favorite? Probably Scotty the Scottish Fold licking his bottle of Scottish Milk. And the very happy Uhura with a tribble in her mouth. It's a bit of a tough choice.
If you like cats and Star Trek, this is most certainly for you. If you are a cat fan with a basic knowledge of Star Trek (like me), you will also appreciate this.
It simply doesn’t get better than a little book combining two of the greatest things: Star Trek and Cats! I loved reading through and admiring the highly detailed and hilarious illustrations inspired by real Star Trek TOS episodes. It’s a very fast read but I enjoyed every second. Wonderful for all ages!
This is a very fun recreation of iconic scenes from Star Trek the original series. There is a helpful reference at the end if you’re thinking, “Which episode was this again?” As the owner of a foolhardy orange tabby who likes to boldly go where no cat has gone before, I appreciate this rendition of Capt James T Kirk. I laughed out loud at the Gorn fight.
The Original Series' cast in their feline form featured in some of the most iconic moments of the show. The feline cast is well selected and portray their roles to the best of their furry abilities.
This is for anyone that loves Star Trek AND Cats. Seriously, such fun. Hopefully there will be TNG and Voyager (and the other series too) in the future! Would love to see more from this artist.
Star trek en katten in 1 boek. Alsof kerst en Sinterklaas op 1 dag vallen! De cat fight van Scotty is briljant en zelfs de Bones cat verliest veel patiënten.
Star Treks cats aren’t ordinary cats. They don’t chase mice; they chase Klingons. Seriously, if the Star Trek cast were cats instead of humans, this is what they would look like. The Captain looks rather arrogant and is definitely in charge. But the Vulcan cat looks like he really does know everything, but is aloof and perhaps a bit bored. A well thought-out and decidedly attractive marriage between cats and Star Trek.
Really cute and funny. A must have for Star Trek fans. Reenactments of classic episodes like The Trouble with Tribbles. This gift book would have been more affective if the cats were real, not illustrations. Not sure if any self respecting cat would have put up with the multiple costume changes, however :)
I was a little disappointed: I was expecting a story here! But instead, it's just pictures. Iconic scenes from Star Trek (TOS), but with cats. The pictures are charming, though.
I love cats. I love Star Trek. So when I heard about the new book from Chronicle Books titled Star Trek Cats by Jenny Parks combining these great loves, I immediately ordered myself a copy.
In spite of my excitement, upon its arrival, I initially had an irrational and undeserved hatred of this book. I was expecting it to be more like a children’s picture book with a traditional story, or perhaps simply photographs of actual cats suffering the indignity of wearing Star Trek themed costumes on all manner of fun sets. Whatever I was expecting, it was not what actually arrived.
So upon tackling this bad boy, the disparity between what it was and what I expected caused a wave of unhappiness to flavor my initial experience.
But as we’ve learned from watching most any episode of Star Trek, my initial assumptions about the situation were deeply wrong. After being irritated with this book and having it sit on my desk for a week, I revisited it to try and figure out what kind of maniacs like this kind of nonsense.
Turns out that *I* am the kind of maniac who likes this nonsense.
