Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.
Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.
Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.
This series should be called Sabotage as a lot of the books feature it. I was entertained watching them run all over Quebec. I wonder if they still do ice car racing or use typewriters anymore.
the visual of frank hardy dressed as sherlock holmes karate kicking a gun out of the bad guy's hand gave me the best laugh I've had while reading in a while so. credit for that.
Average ND/HB mystery. The sabotage plot wasn't very explained and are left to guess the person that did it was for revenge/money. The characters were ok, but didn't have much depth to them, which left them kinda bland. The action was also ok, but could have been more exciting. I felt like this book was rather a Nancy Drew Super-Mystery as Nancy does pretty much all the investigating in this book, gets most reading attention, and solves both mysteries while the Hardy's feel like they've just been thrown in the story and don't really do much but follow Nancy around and ask boring questions. But overall, I still enjoyed this book, I liked the setting, the story moved along nicely, the end was suspenseful, and it was pretty fun to read around New Year's! 3 stars.
As an adult, I found “New Year’s Evil” to be a light, easy re-read that I enjoyed. I say “re-read” because I originally read it in the 90s; I loved reading Nancy Drew as a youth. I like the Quebec Winter Carnival setting with ice-racing and movie making. It’s interesting and fun. This novel provides a story of mystery and murder with a lot of suspects. For the intended grade level of 7 – 9, this story is full of adventure, thrills, and suspense. There are powerful male and female protagonists that show teamwork and problem solving. With all the suspects, there are lots of twists but in the end everything is explained. They solve the mystery with no loose ends. It is a satisfying conclusion to the novel.
DID ANYONE READ ANY OF THOSE NANCY DREW/HARDY BOYS TEAM UP ONES? I REMEMBER ONE IN LIKE QUEBEC CITY OR MONTREAL AND ONE IN HAWAII.
LOL I SHIPPED NANCY/FRANK. THE ONE ON THE CRUISE SHIP AND THE ONE WHERE THEY WENT ON A SKI TRIP WERE THE BEST.
I READ A COUPLE BUT I FOUND THEM BORING.
LOL EARLIER THIS MORNING I RANDOMLY REMEMBERED THE NANCY DREW/HARDY BOYS CROSSOVER BOOK SERIES FROM THE 90S THAT HAD, AT LEAST IN MY MEMORY, MANY BOOKS THAT WENT LIKE THIS: "NANCY WAS SUPER HORNY FOR FRANK, AND FRANK WAS SUPER HORNY FOR NANCY. UNFORTUNATELY NANCY WAS WITH NED AND FRANK WAS WITH WHATSHERNAME. :( :( :( :(" I DIDN'T GET WHY THE FUCK THEY DIDN'T BREAK UP WITH THEIR SO'S. NANCY KISSED FRANK MOAR THAN ONCE AND FELT ONLY SORT OF BAD ABOUT CHEATING! LOL IT WAS LOLZY.
I READ A COUPLE OF THOSE BUT THE ONLY ONE I REMEMBER AT ALL WAS THE ONE SET IN QUEBEC.
I love Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys series. I love the collaboration between the two books. Nancy is a girl detective and to see the Hardy Boys, the two brother detectives, work together to solve the mystery.
Nancy Drew and her friend Bess are in Quebec, Canada on the set of "Dangerous Loves" to help solve who is sabotaging the movie. The Hardy Boys are on Vacation in Quebec, Canada. When there was a murder of a Campion ice racer, the Hardy Boys vacation turned into another case. The two teams work together to solve the two cases before another tragedy strikes.
This is a quick and easy read that would be fine for anyone over the age of 10. If you're familiar with the old Nancy Drew books, then you know the kind-of mystery that lies in store for you: something slightly complex that isn't going to tax your brain, but will leave you on the edge of your seat.
I'd suggest this to anyone who likes mysteries that are driven by thrills and life threatening situation. Give it a pass if you're the type of mystery lover who wants complex plots and well thought-out motives.
This was a quick read, but a good one. I'm a person that tries to guess the answer to the mystery throughout the book, but I could never seem to guess right. This book had me on my toes and was very unpredictable.
