The Creeps #1

Night of the Frankenfrogs

Rate this book
In Pumpkins County, weird things happen every day, but nobody ever makes a fuss. Nobody, that is, except the Carol, a big-city girl new to Pumpkins County, who finds kindred spirits in Mitchell (monster expert), Jarvis (military brat with logistics know-how), and Rosario (girly girl on the outside, muscle underneath). The Creeps are on the case to figure out the spooky mysteries and still get to class on time. Last week it was a pudding monster. This week, it’s killer frogs—reanimated from the team’s biology class dissection experiment. Who’s behind the Frankenfrog attacks? The Creeps will track down the answers!

In this new creepy graphic novel series, Chris Schweizer’s art is full of the visual excitement that only the best graphic novel creators can pull off.

So this book looked real fun and I was eager to get started on it... However in the end I am disappointed. For one, I don't get why the principal was having the group do all their punishment DURING classes. WHAT? Why not at the end of the day so they don't miss out, because this way they are just going to flunk, meaning they are staying longer with you. Since you have those strong feelings, I am sure you don't want that. I also wasn't a fan of how everyone treated the group. It was like they had a sickness, something contagious, and that just didn't sit well with me. How the class reacted when the frogs were stolen, WOW. Like it was their fault, while the whole frog stuff started because someone didn't want to dissect something (I am so glad we don't do that crap here in my country). And there are other moments (like the arm breaking, the kidnapping, the whole going to beat them up part), it just felt wrong, given off the wrong signals. Then there is the ending and I was just shaking my head, how? What the actual fuck?
But the mystery and the frogs were exciting and everything that happened throughout was WOW, what happened in that factory was gross and awesome, and I love that the kids were so brave that they solved all these mysteries no matter how scary it got.

Schweizer hits it out of the park with this one - frenetic pacing, snappy dialogue, an odd ball cast of characters and musings on the importance of good education. I loved this!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to everyone involved.

Group of school outcasts? Check. Strange goings on? Check. Laughs on each page and a mystery you genuinely want the answers to? Check and check. Should you check this book out? Check.

I might have overdone the checks there.

But seriously, The Creeps is a very entertaining mystery/horror story that children can enjoy from a fairly young age that will also make grown ups laugh along the way. The Creeps themselves are likeable (particularly Rosario, whose mix of brawn and textiles-knowledge made me smile on many occasions), the mystery is played out well with a laughably ridiculous lack of consequence and return to the norm for the guilty villain, and it left me looking forward to joining the gang on another wacky adventure.

And when I say wacky, I also mean bizarre, random, quirky and suspension-of-disbelief-in-a-good-way-ey. It's clearly not a book that is trying to be even remotely realistic, which is certainly not a criticism as I love the crazy story that it weaves, peppered with little twists and self-realisation from the characters that what happens to them isn't even slightly normal. The artwork matches the feel of the book perfectly, with the type of outlandish cartoon-style that appealed to me so much as a child.

The kids at my library love to have a graphic novel recommended that isn't just Asterix or Tintin, so if we don't have any copies coming on to the catalogue when it's published, I'll be contacting the children's team to ensure they put in some orders!

Oddly enough this drops us into the fallout of one adventure, and assumes we know and care about what happened to whom, even though it is the first in a series. Four disparate children have to cope with both demands of middle school science lessons and cleaning up after a disastrous encounter with a pudding monster, and find all kinds of shenanigans going on. The artwork is incredibly messy and ugly, the characters aren't defined at all (apart from the bulky, cute one who wants to be girly and witter on and on about fabric but isn't allowed), and the adventure really doesn't spark to life at all. First book or not, it's probably my last.

An ok science mystery with a group of nerdy kids everybody calls the "Creeps". Each has a special interest or talent, but their looks don't seem to be any creepier than any of the other characters. Deals with a lot of general science topics as well as the more far-fetched plot of frankenstein-frogs. Occasionally goes into science teacher mode which felt like a forced time-out for an education lesson, but overall a decent combination of the bizarre and real science using the graphic novel format. Has a place in the school or classroom library.

The trim size isn't doing it any favors since there's tons of text on almost every page. The art wasn't my style (too shaky somehow) and the cast of characters felt like ticking off boxes from a generic qualities/interests list. Too bad, I had pretty high hopes for this one. Kids might be into it still, but not one for our recommendations list.

The first installment of The Creeps series, Night of the Frankenfrogs, is one of the few graphic novels I have read in the past couple of years although I have read several comics. This book is centered around four students around the age of middle school who are nicknamed "The Creeps" by the rest of their classmates because they think they are incredibly weird and they are constantly solving mysteries. When the frogs that are meant for dissection go missing and are brought back to life, kidnapping students, it's up to the Creeps to save their classmates and catch an unlikely culprit. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the plot of this book but the end was just not satisfying to me. Even though The Creeps end up successful in the end, their classmates are ungrateful and treat them badly which didn't sit right with me.

These kids need to dissect a frog for biology class but the frogs are from a different time and they need to get the frankenfrogs that have escaped back into the school and dealt with before they become a bigger problem then what they already are.

What a wonderful fun book for kids, and yes for adults too. It covers school cliques, the power of science, and the value of being true to yourself.

The Creeps: Book 1: Night of the Frankenfrogs is a children's graphic novel by Chris Schweizer. It was scheduled for release on August 11 2015. In Pumpkins County, weird things happen every day, but nobody ever makes a fuss. Nobody, that is, except the Creeps: Carol, a big-city girl new to Pumpkins County, who finds kindred spirits in Mitchell (monster expert), Jarvis (military brat with logistics know-how), and Rosario (girly girl on the outside, muscle underneath).

Frankenfrogs is a fun and freaky graphic novel about misfits in the school that are the only ones that seem to acknowledge the strange things that happening their school, and the town. The group of friends is ready to take on the challenges that come with facing the less than typical school problems they have to face, but could do without the bullying and punishments they need to serve because of the solutions they find to deal with the odd problems they deal with. When the frogs intended for dissection end up reanimated and attacking the group of friends are on a mission to stop them, and discover who is behind the attack. The story is crazy and more than a little out there- which I liked. It is fun and has characters that I liked because of their strangeness. There is little consequence for the evil doer, and that all adds to the wackiness of the story. It is fast paced, full of witty dialogue, and has artwork that really brings the whole story to life.

The only thing that really bothered me might not really bother others. I felt like there was a book before this one, something I missed. The story starts with the creeps and the school dealing with the aftermath of the evil pudding monster- but there is no explanation of that encounter or whey the group is dubbed "the Creeps". I just shrugged it off and tried to move on, but it still rather irks me.

Frankenfrogs is a graphic novel that is creep and funny. It is full of wacky characters, action and humor that will appeal to many young readers that love monsters, fun, and graphic novels. I think my son would love the book.

Mitchell, Rosario, Jarvis, and Carol are known around school as the Creeps. It might have to do with their weird hobbies and talents, but mostly it's because they keep making a huge mess and destroying the school. Now, they insist that they were saving the school from a giant pudding monster, but people are weirdly unappreciative. So they've been punished by being forced to help out the school janitor, cleaning the school and doing thankless tasks for the teachers. One afternoon, when they're supposed to fetch the dead frogs for science class dissection, they discover that all of them are missing. This is just fine with their classmates, who have signed a petition saying that dissection is wrong, but then the frogs start turning up...as reanimated "frankenfrogs" with the ability to shock people with electricity. Who could have created these strange monsters? And how can the Creeps get anyone to believe them so they can take these things down?

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It weirdly feels like the middle of the series instead of the first because it starts in the middle of things, but it does explain everything pretty well. The humor and one-liners are pretty standard, and the art is kind of ugly, but the characters are interesting and there are some science concepts and discussion topics that are integrated fairly seamlessly. I can see endlessly possibilities for sequels, so I'm sure we'll see more from this series.

I would recommend this book to grades 4-8, especially fans of graphic novels, science fiction/adventures, funny friendship stories, and science.

'The Creeps: Book 1: Night of the Frankenfrogs' by Chris Schweizer feels like not the first book in a series even though it is one. Regardless, it's a fun romp full of weird creatures and gross situations.

The Creeps are a bunch of misfit kids with varying talents. At the beginning of the book, they've obviously been in trouble for something, so the school is making them fill in for the school custodian. One of their jobs is to bring in the frogs that the Biology lab will be dissecting. When the frogs go missing, The Creeps decide to go looking for the absent amphibians. They find themselves crawling around in the sewers along with super rats, strange creatures, and the Frankenfrogs in the title. There are a lot of suspects, so who is in charge of the newly reconfigured frogs?

My inner 5th grader liked the characters and the kind of gross fun they get into in this graphic novel. I was confused because it seems like there is an earlier adventure that happens before this book. The art is ok, but a little loose on style. It's easy enough to follow what's going on, but some panels seem a bit overly busy. I'd like to read more adventures of this clever band of misfits.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from ABRAMS, Amulet Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This was pretty fun. A little bit scary/gross so it might be most appropriate for a late grade school age kid. Some fun genre play. The disdain that the characters feel towards The Creeps is pretty over the top. Maybe it would have resonated with me more when I was middle school age and dealing with the over the top disdain from my peers.

The Creeps: Carol (Hacker extraordinaire), Mitchell (Monster expert), Jarvis (Gadget wizard) and Rosario( Super-ripped fashionista) are apart of a crime-solving squad at their Pumpkins County Middle School. These students and classmates like to solve spooky mysteries. The Creeps use their unique talents and humor throughout this funny action-packed graphic novel to find out who's responsible for the missing frog specimens that are intended to be dissected in their science class project.
One of my favorite parts is the investigation of Perry Milburn who was the only sixth grader to ever win first place at the state science fair. The Creeps felt he could be a suspect in the disappearance of the school's frogs. Perry went missing after losing his title two years later and is believed to be maintaining a secret laboratory in the sewers using old discarded school equipment for mysterious experiments.
I really enjoyed the reading. This fictional book was entertaining from beginning to end. The story and characters are well developed. The author does a great job of building suspense, and keeping the reader guessing. I'm giving a rating of five stars and feel parents and kids of all ages will feel the same.

Okay I will admit, I requested this on NetGalley because...frogs. I mean come on...I love frogs. But from the very beginning I was confused. The action jumped right in with The Creeps (never explains the name or really gives much in the way of background) and something with evil pudding in the cafeteria. As punishment for that this group of students has to do cleaning. There is also an issue with students protesting frog dissection. Then the frogs disappear and the Creeps try to figure out who did it. That part of the book was okay but there was this nagging feeling throughout the book that I was missing something - that this was not the first in a series. But it is... My students might not mind it but it bothered me.

A bunch of kid detectives try to find out why there are frogs being brought back to life...hence Frankenfrogs. They are the Creeps, they are hated in their town but still do what they can to save the day.

My first graphic novel, not a good choice. It was great illustrations and such a potential of a story but honestly I didn't like how the kids were called names and were hated such. So not necessary. Not going to give much a review here, not a lot to say. Kids might like this but I didn't.

The creeps is about four nerds who have to dissect a frog. They go look for the frog before class and they find it in the freezer, but when they come back it's not there. They have to find it before there friends get mind controled by the person behind this who has turned the frogs into monsters. The reason I give this five stars is because it is adventurous, exciting, and funny this book is very good for all people at all age. I hope you like it to.

Things I love about THE CREEPS: NIGHT OF THE FRANKENFROGS:

1. The Creeps
2. The names
3. The dialogue
4. The plot, which moves briskly (but not break-neckedly) along
5. The humor (Rosario insisting she is dainty is maybe my favorite)
6. The way the book begins at the end of some previous "Noodle Incident" that we don't really know anything about, but that doesn't matter
7. The art. Of course.

(Mutant frogs + four unusual middle schoolers) x grossness = Night of the Frankenfrogs
This is a good book to recommend to those who have read Dan Gutman's My Weird School series or Troy Cumming's The Notebook of Doom series and are wondering what to read next. Fans of graphic novels or gross humor will like this one too.

This is humorous horror, which is my favorite kind! Suspend your disbelief as you follow four geeky science kids down the sewer trail. My favorite character was fashionista Rosario. She just wants to be recognized for her true loves of fabric, clothing and the dreamy new boy. The geeky science nerd that lives in most everyone will thank you for reading this adventure. It's pure, gross fun!

Love the cast (diverse gender expression! not all white!), love the story, ripped through this. The illustrations are a little frenetic for my normal taste, but fit with the crazy story.

Blurbed to all my elementary schools in 2016.

I hope he makes a bunch more.
