Guild Hunter #7

Archangel's Shadows

Rate this book
Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.

In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot—should not—be walking the streets.

This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…

Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

Once again Nalini Singh proves with her newest release, Archangel Shadow why she's my favorite paranormal romance/urban fantasy author.

description

I love this book. It has so much to offer its readers in terms of an emotional and engaging plot, a powerful and poignant love story, witty and intelligent dialogue, and characters so richly developed and multilayered they breathe life into each and every page. I fell in love with this story, its hero and heroine, and its ability to make me feel and laugh.

While the story centers on Ashwini and Janvier tender and passionate romance, the overall series plot continues as we see the aftermath from the big battle that took place in the last book. Elena and Raphael, as well as Dmitri and a few others were given extensive page time, which I really enjoyed.

My favorite part of this story, however, took me by complete surprise. Naasir, the vampire who isn't quite a vampire and a character we know little about, seemed to come out of nowhere and, frankly, became my obsession. Oh my goodness, I fell head-over-heels in love with this intriguing, wild, uncivilized but, oh, so endearing character. After reading other reviews, I think it's safe to say that he was the shining star of this story. I can't wait to get more of him.

From start to finish, Archangel Shadow is a delightfully fulfilling story – one I highly recommend.

So I know I said that I don't like angels in Urban Fantasy in my last review, but I should have qualified that statement: if the angels are simply winged, humanoid beings without ties to religion (and only called "angels" for lack of a better description), then I like them juuuuust fiiiiiiine. And if they happen to be the angels in Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter books, then I flat-out L-O-V-E them.

Guild Hunter is kind of an odd series. It's part UF, part PNR, and it's kind of a perfect marriage between the two. You've got Elena and Raphael, the MCs for the series overall, but then you've got a handful of books, still continuing the main plot, but focused on other, well-liked secondaries like you find in PNR.

Elena and Raphael still play important roles in those books, and even have the occasional POV shift, but in those other books we get an opportunity to get a deeper look at characters previously viewed from the sidelines.

The first time Singh did this was in book 4, Archangel's Blade, and ever since then, I've been anxiously awaiting this book: the Ash and Janvier book.

Ash and Janvier have been consistently providing moments of hilarity, beginning with the very first installment. Ash was painted as a violent and slightly unbalanced guild hunter, and Janvier, the roguishly handsome and incorrigibly charming vampire she was often hired to hunt. Janvier would lead her on a merry chase, only to get the contract on him nullified within hours of Ash catching up to him:
"You made me traipse through the bayou for weeks," she muttered now. "Then, right when I had you, you made nice with the angel you'd pissed off." It wasn't the first time he'd done that either. "You knew how mad that made me---why did you keep doing it?"

Lifting their clasped hands, he pressed a kiss to her knuckles. "I was courting you."

Like I said--HILARIOUS.

It was obvious that there was more going on with these two, but Ash always held Janvier at a distance. In Archangel's Shadows we find out why. *whispers* And it's goooooood.

The PNR format means that an HEA is inevitable, but if you want to know the ends and outs . . . you're going to have to read it for yourself. All I can say without spoiling it, is that I was impressed with Singh's spin on the (IMO) too often employed "but we can't EVER be together, b/c insert-not-a-reason-here" track.

Ash had a legitimate reason, and Singh's solution was nothing less than brilliant. *tips hat*

I also have a new book to anxiously await.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Naasir stole the spotlight (b/c Janvier *swoon*), but it was close. Between Dimintri's remembrances from Naasir's childhood:
He'd never forget what Naasir had said to him when Dmitri yelled that he didn't intend to bury another child and that Naasir needed to have a care for his life.

"Am I a person, Dmitri? Will you be sad if I die?"

And his obvious feral nature in the present:
"I told Caliane that trying to civilize me is like trying to civilize a jungle cat," Naasir said with a shrug. "We pretend to like people until we get hungry and want fresh meat." A glance around, a glint in his eye. "I honestly do like you all. I haven't thought about eating you for at least two centuries."

I am dying to find out what this wild, yet completely enthralling, beast is.  *grabby hands*

Archangel's Shadows was everything  I wanted it to be. It did justice to two of my favorite characters, making their story worth the wait, and still kept me full of anticipation for the next chapter . . .

Hopefully Naasir's. *winks*

3 - 3.5 Filler-rific Stars

***Possible spoilers for this book - DEFINITE spoilers for previous books***

So I had two options for a review title in my head when I sat down to write this. My original one was a little...longer. I went with the above option (obviously), but here is what I originally wanted to go with:

3 - 3.5 Raphael & Elena, no Dimitri & Honor, no wait Illium & Aodhan, no hold on I mean Ransom & Nyree, oops no I meant Tanu and Avri, oh wait actually Titus & Keir ok I mean definitely Naasir...Okay fine, everyone OTHER than Janvier & Ashwini STOLE THE SHOW Stars

description

Don't get me wrong. Nalini Singh is one of my top favorite authors of all time. She is a brilliant story teller, an expert world builder, and an is-it-PNR-or-UF(???)-MASTER. Her ability to include subtle nuances that serve to create deep characters and an enriched story is unmatched - and all that awesomeness is definitely present in this book.

So to be clear: I definitely enjoyed this book.

HOWEVER...

As alluded to in my ridiculously convoluted review title #2, we get to see all of our favorite peeps and homies. There are awesome cameos by all the above mentioned characters.

But I'm really not joking though when I say that all the other characters stole the show from Janvier and Ashwini, the so-called "main characters" of this book. At least for me.

Dimitri & Honor are ridiculously adorable together. I mean come on, their souls found each after a fucking millennium, people. And Raphael's character is so magnetic he pretty much steals every scene he's in - which is a given. However, the main attention thief in this book?

Naasir.

Seriously, that mo-fo takes entertainment to the nth degree and I loved every single scene he was in.

description

I mean just Naasir bringing to Elena at a dinner party was more memorable to me than most Janvier/Ashwini scenes.

Even Lijuan - who is supposedly dead, but not really dead - had so much screen mention here it almost drowned them out.

Don't misunderstand me, Janvier and Ashwini are wonderful characters and I really liked them. We have seen Janvier and Ashwini's relationship grow and develop as side characters in other stories preceding this one.

But in my opinion, that's where they should have stayed: on the side.

They were just too buried by the power of the other characters all throughout this book for me.

description

Not only that, but a lot of their scenes together involved them investigating a murder. And, honestly, the way some of those scenes were laid out made me feel like Lenny Briscoe and Mike Logan were going to pop up at any moment and pitch in on the case.

description

description

Then we of course had the larger, over-arching story lines that are carried on throughout the series.

description

Seriously though, there was so much going on in this story and yet there wasn't...I felt like this book was almost a "filler book" for the series.

Yes, the main focus was supposedly Janvier and Ashwini, but like I said, they didn't even feel like the main characters half the time (to me) and I feel like all this book served to do was further set up Naasir and Illium for their future stories.

And also quite bothersome to me?

Janiver and Ashwini don't even get it on until over 80% into the book!

For real.

Until then, they have one scene in which they toplessly grind on each other like high school freshmen.

But up until that point?

Nada.
Zip.
Zilch.
Nothing.
[insert another synonym meaning "the negation of anything"]

description

Am I pervert? No.
A sex fiend? Perhaps.

Now once again, don't get me wrong. I don't mind it when my stories lack the old slap and tickle, but this is Nalini Singh, people; therefore, I expect my sundae to come fully loaded with whipped cream, nuts, and an optional cherry (this is absolutely an intended metaphor for virginity - the must-have ingredient to the classic romance recipe).

But in this case, I'm thinking that perhaps Rock Addiction and Rock Courtship must have depleted Singh of all her sexy time reserves, because while those books were overwhelmed by superfluous intercourse, this book was like a drought that needed an aqueduct, stat.

But I digress.

Overall, this book was a great addition to the series. I just felt that its punch lacked the power of previous installments; regardless, it's a definite must for the series and is worth reading for Naasir alone.

And PS, it would be AWESOME if Singh ever decided to dapple in a full M/M, because Bluebell and his Sparkle would make the cutest couple EVER.

4 Raphael's City Stars

description

We have been waiting for a year to witness the aftermath of two Archangels fighting over New York. Raphael's light beat the hell out Lijuan's darkness but the Archangel of Death though beaten isn't yet dead. The town has gained a respite. To heal its wounds and bond tighter than ever.

description

So, it's Aswini and Janvier's time. To let themselves fall in love and share their deepest, darkest fears.

“I’ll show you things that’ll make you laugh in delight, scream in passion, cry for the sheer joy of it.”

description

Before starting this book I was more excited of the idea that we will get glimpses of my all time favourite couple, Raphael and Elena, more than reading about Ash and Janvier give in to each other. But Nalini never stops surprising me. She takes us from the skies down to Earth, to the heart of the territory where basic instincts rule and people are easy and sometimes willing prey to predators. This is were Ash lets all her shields and hesitations go and surrenders herself totally to Janvier. Sensual in their passion and heart-achingly beautiful I LOVED their story. It was indeed a break we needed after the battle of New York and the rising threats on the horizon.

But the stars of this book, were the guest-stars. The Legion with their loyalty, Caliane as a loving mother-in-law, Keir with his playboy ways, Titus the honorable warrior, Aodhan the diamond Angel, Dimitri and Honor, Ilium, my precious Bluebell and of course my new favourite, the one and only, I-have-no-idea-what-the-hell-he-hides, Naasir!

description

I NEED HIS STORY NOW!

Best fantasy romance series and personal favourite, I can't recommend these books enough. I am hopelessly in love!

Pre-release rant!
Ashwini and Janvier's Story (or so we thought... ;) )

description

*pouting* I wanted Ilium! Or Aodhan! Hell, I needed more Raphael....
But OK, it's Nalini Singh's book it's bound to be awesome!!!

description

UPDATE from Nalini's blog

The book will feature Ash and Janvier from "Angels' Pawn" as main characters, but it will also feature Elena and Raphael (after the events in "Archangel's Legion", they have a lot to deal with!).

This is a tightly connected world and group of characters, so we're also going to see most of the usual suspects, including the hunters and many of the Seven (Naasir, too ;-)).

GREAT NEWS PEOPLE!!!

Spoilers

I was bored for the most part, the heroine's non-stop angsting and self-pity was off putting. On top of that, the romance and main arc were nothing I hadn't read about countless times before, it was the same old, same old. There were some good parts though, I loved the Guild Hunter world and the majority of the secondary characters.

-What's what: Ashwini/Janvier's story. POV's from Elena/Raphael and other characters as well. The story mainly followed Ash/Janvier's romance whilst they investigated a death or two. The rest was about the aftermath of the battle Raphael and his people had with Lijuan.

-Ash and Janvier's investigation-of-the-week type plot didn't hold my attention whatsoever, it was the typical PNR/UF sort of plot. The arc about Raphael and his people/city recovering from Lijuan was interesting though, as was the glimpses of the Legion.

-The writing was more flowery than usual, everything was described in such a melodramatic or overly sensuous or unrealistic way. It made for difficult reading, I didn't know what I was reading at times because the purple prose bogged everything down.

-I quite liked Janvier, he was the most normal male lead in the series thus far. There was nothing too painful or tortured about his past, it was refreshing to see he had a good relationship with his family and that he had no dark secrets or inner pain. Also, his powers and looks were quite average in comparison to Raphael and the Seven - he wasn't the most powerful, and he didn't have a unique ability or have something distinctive/remarkable about his looks. It made a nice change from the usual speshul snowflake emo hero.

-I rolled my eyes at Ashwini having a tortured past and considering herself broken, and I sighed every time she banged on about her wretched powers or family. Maybe I would have been more intrigued about her past if it wasn't so similar to Elena's. Both had dead siblings/parent(s), troubled relationships with their father/father figure, and Guild Hunter powers which were rejected or seen as abnormal by their family. I would have liked something more/different to her personality other than her powers and secret inner pain. None of it was engrossing or shocking because she was just like Elena and Honor.

-I wasn't a fan of Ash and Janvier's romance, they were fun and cute at times but they were rather predictable, also Ash pulling away from Janvier was super repetitive and irritating. I was expecting some jaw dropping secret about why she couldn't be with him, but instead it was just her fearing she would end up like her mentally ill sister and mum even though she'd shown zero signs of mental illness, and must have known that mental health problems in the family didn't automatically mean she would end up with them too.
I also hated that Ash was a virgin, it didn't fit with her character from earlier books, and it just made the romance extra cheesy.

-I'm getting sick of pretty much every character in the series having some dark or horrible chapters in their life. It doesn't make them complex or deep, especially when every hero/heroine has been through the same bloody thing. For once, I would have liked a heroine who had a normal childhood/life. A hero/heroine's personality needs more to them than their speshul snowflake like abilities/powers, being sexy, and having a painful past.

-I wasn't impressed with Ash having no past romantic relationships, it made her even more banal. Her family problems and dark powers weren't compelling, since it was the same old rubbish loads of other heroines had been through. I would have been more intrigued if she'd had loads of fucked up past romances, as least that's not been done to death in UF/PNR. Not all heroines need to be innocent little Mary Sues with forgettable or non-existent love lives.

-The way the main male characters were portrayed was kind of ridiculous. They were all so amazing and unique in some way or another, whenever one of the Seven were described they all had some speshul snowflakey look or power or history to them. It was a bit too much, they were appealing enough characters already without them needing to have the most stunning wings/eyes/body ever or the most extraordinary/one of kind power ever. I wanted more depth to their personality, not more speshul snowflake like speshulness added to them.

-The Seven and the Legion were enjoyable to read about (except when their snowflakey powers/looks were described), I especially liked the interactions and relationships between them all.

-Ash and Elena were surrounded mostly by men, as usual there wasn't much interaction with other female characters in comparison to male characters.

-I was more fascinated by the minor female characters (Brooke, Penelope, Felicity) than Ashwini, they actually seemed to have a personality that didn't revolve around being a Mary Sue.

-I'm getting a bit tired of the formulaic Singh romances/heroes/heroines, there's no originality or uniqueness in her main characters, relationships or story. The world is probably the best aspect to her series, everything else is just a variation of former couples/relationships.

-As much as I like the Seven I'm not sure I want them all to have their own story, they'll only end up with boring Mary Sues who have never lusted, loved or had fulfilling lives before. And they themselves will probably change into Gary Stus.

All in all, I was disappointed in Ashwini's story, she was a mediocre heroine with a cliched and dull past, her every action and thought was generic. The romance was generic as well, there was nothing memorable or captivating about Ash and Janvier. I think I would have been more entertained by the Seven simply playing chess with each other or the Legion hanging out in their greenhouse. I hope the next one doesn't have such a Mary Sue heroine.

You know how there are certain series that you just love so much that you know you are going to give each book all the stars? This is one of mine, along with Kate Daniels. There are just some characters and worlds that burrow under your skin and give you an itch that only they can scratch.

I know, I come up with beautiful analogies.

This world where there are angels (but they are more like another race - not heaven's angels) and vampires is so awesome. I almost want to live there. Well, as long as I get to be an angel with some kickass wings. The descriptions of their wings, their "otherness", and their flight are so beautiful that I get envious of birds.

Birds are so cool!

So, in this book we have the love story of Janvier and Ash. He is a vampire and she is a hunter for the Guild. They have known each other for many years and have always had a jokingly antagonistic, but flirty, relationship.

"Don't get too cocky cuddlebunny."

His grin was bright. "What's a cuddlebunny?" He asked.

"You, at the moment."

......
"I don't want you frozen." A wicked smile. "I like your blood running hot."

"Stop thinking about my blood."

"Now you ask for the impossible from your cuddlebunny."

Aren't they adorable? Well, I think they are.
So, while we are watching their adorable romance, we also have them solving a crime. There is something killing women and dumping their bodies. It has to be a vamp or an angel, but they've never seen any bodies left in such horrible condition before.

Along with that, we have an even more horrifying event going on: Raphael's mother is coming for a visit. That's right, Elena has to entertain her mother-in-law! What could be worse?

But, the biggest gem in this book is getting to know Naasir. He is a vampire... of some sort... kind of seems like a tiger shape-shifter too. Nobody really knows exactly what he is, but he is delightful!

Elena invites him to dinner and when everyone hears that he plans on bringing her a gift, they suddenly want to join this dinner party.

Illium's golden eyes gleamed. "Oh, yes, I'm definitely coming to dinner."

Elena wasn't an idiot. "What are you expecting Naasir to do?"

"Word is," he said, "Naasir's bringing you a present."
...
Jason stirred. "He once brought an angel a bucket of piranhas and told the angel to stick his hand inside to retrieve his gift."
...
"At least there is nowhere for Naasir to find a live wild boar here." That came from Aodhan.

I was slightly disappointed at what his gift turned out to be. But, I think they might have built my expectations a little too high.

Naasir has decided that it's time for him to find a mate next, and I can't wait for the next book. Part of that is because his love story will be awesome, and part of it is because I just want to know what the hell he is. Tell us already!

A buddy read with the Wednesday UF group at BB&B! We need to get our hunting on!!!

This was supposed to be a buddy read. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, a BR is a book reading club, only on line, and several people decide on a book, a date and read it, while making comments and discussing the said book. What makes it a buddy read as opposed to a read along is the act of discussing and communication. Well, I sucked at being a good buddy this time, and I blame Nalini Singh for it!!! Why?

Well, because she keeps writing books for this series which only get better and better, the tension is higher, the bad guys are worse, and the characters are becoming more and more close to our hearts. So I couldn't just read a little and stop to comment. I was so involved with the story, I missed eating, sleeping, and even a basketball game, only so I can find out what happens!!! Every time I thought, well, this was so cool, let me share it with my buddies, I thought yea, let me just finish one more chapter and I will... Until I finished the book and realized I had not commented even once... I suck at being a good buddy reader....

As horrible of a person as I am, Nalini has found just the right formula of PNR and a bit of UF, which has stolen my heart and I am a full fledged member of The Nalini Fan Club now... Never saw that coming. Why would I? It is just another world of creatures who no matter what they have to go through, always find their HEA in the end, right? What could be compelling enough to keep and hold my interest? Believe it or not, it is the overall plot, as well as the consistency with which the author gives us updates and creates developments which have their roots still with the first book, and we get to grow and develop with the characters and situations they have to deal with in this cruel and ruthless world. Life is not easy, monsters wear pretty faces, and power is nothing you should wish for lightly. Everything has a price, and the price is never quite right...

In this book we finally got to see the romance between a charming Vampire, Janvier, and a Guild Hunter, Ash. Those two have been dancing around each other for a while now and it was great to finally see them getting over their fears and jumping into the dance of Love.

While learning one another, Janvier and Ash work on investigation concerning the cruel deaths and torture of some prostitutes, and the trail leads them to some sick villains.. At the same time, the Gray Angels of the Legion are trying to adjust to the city, Raphael's mother is coming to visit, and a very fun Tiger-Vampire creature stole the show every time he appeared on page. There are many little details which show us all the preparations and damages which go along with a territory in a state of alert and war readiness...

"... "“Be careful, Raphael,” he said, well aware Naasir’s loyalty was as unflinching as his own. “The tiger creature is flirting with your consort.”
“Of course he is. She, too, is a fierce creature with a wild heart.” Raphael pushed through the door, his hand snapping up to catch the knife Elena threw in his direction."..."

I loved this book and I know that this series has become one of those for which I have lost all objectivity, thus I would recommend you all to read it and tell me if I am right or not:-)

Happy Reading to all!!!

"5 Fantastic, sexy Cajun stars!"

The wonderful thing about reading Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series is that no matter if it's been 3 months or a year since you've read her last book, by the time you've finished the first page, you're transported right back into her fantastic world of cruel, cold angels; ruthless, sexy vampires; and kick-ass, sassy, warrior-hunters.

Ms Singh's world-building, characters, and stories are amazing, addictive, creative, memorizing, thrilling, dangerous, and sexy.
This addition to the series is no exception.

Once again Ms Singh has given her readers a wonderful story with a mystery to be solved, and two characters that have been dancing around each other since Angels' Pawn.

Janvier and Ashwini are wonderfully passionate, loyal, and colourful characters.

 photo http3A2F2F33.media.tumblr.com2Fa375109bda685ee14482457c9c3074be2Ftumblr_n9upaiyG2I1qgqjq5o1_500.gif

I loved their story, and I loved reading their journey to one another.
One of my favourite quotes in the story is when Janvier is making his commitment to Ashwini (Ash, or Ashblade).

"I'll show you things that'll make you laugh in delight, scream in passion, cry for the sheer joy of it."

Right after making this pledge, Janvier promised her that no matter what happens he could deny her nothing, and they would continue to live their lives from this point on - together "full throttle".

 photo http3A2F2F37.media.tumblr.com2Fa1b7c127442dcd4af5b960a2e4f77c0f2Ftumblr_n72p5lFeGW1spbxyho1_500.gif

Ms Singh also gave her readers a little bit more of Naasir's character. In this story, he's still the deadly feline/tiger vampire creature that we've come to know, but we're also shown a more playful, curious, almost childlike innocence to his character.

One of my favourite scenes is of Naasir and Ashwini sitting on top of a building after a tragedy in Ashwini's life, and Naasir has decided he wants a mate.

Naasir:"I'm old enough now, and I want someone to play with like you play with Janvier and Raphael does with Elena. Even Dmitri plays with Honor."
This seemed to fascinate him.
"The rules are secret in each game. I want to have secret rules with a woman who knows me, understands what I am, and who wants to have secret rules with me."
Ashwini: It was a very Naasir definition of love and it was wonderful. "I think your mate will be a lucky woman."

Naasir's mate will certainly be special, and his story interesting.

If you're a fan of "The Guild Hunter" series you won't be disappointed with this addition to the series!

Kudos Ms Singh to another fantastic story!

Janvier and Ashwini are amazing together!

I've now decided (since finishing my re-read) that if I could be any paranormal-fictional character, I would be a Guild Hunter 'born hunter' and Elena, Honor, Ashwini, Ransom, Demarco, Ilium, and Janvier would be my co-workers, family, and best-friends!

That's how much I enjoy this author's voice, the world she's built, and the wonderful characters she's created.

Ms Singh MAKES me want to read; to get lost in these fantastic adventures.

My imagination and my heart are extremely happy once I finish one of her stories!

Ms Singh is truly one of my favourite author's!

November 2021 re-read: This book puts me through the emotional wringer every.single.time.

I can't believe that I didn't write an actual review of this book at any point in the last couple years since it's come out. Noticing that is actually one of the reasons that I started on this re-read of the entire series. And it's been so worth it. This is the first time I've re-read in a few years and I'm enjoying the series like it's brand new - mostly because since Archangel's Storm, it feels that way to me. I've re-read these later books once at most, and they're still not fully settled in my memory. This is probably the closest I'll ever get to reading them for the first time again.

Ash and Janvier have been a favorite since their novella (Angels' Pawn) was first released in a tease of the series prior to Elena and Raphael's first book. I loved her "gifts" and his charm. They seemed the perfect pair and I've spent several years watching them play with each other, tease and chase each other, and (I hoped) work towards their HEA. Finally, finally, my patience (okay, so I wasn't so patient) paid off.

I thought I had a pretty good handle on the gifts that Ashwini hid from the majority of the world. A type of psychometry, more to do with people than objects though, and a bit of precognition. But I never considered the darker side. I knew that her touching others could leave her reeling in their memories, but there's a very real consequence and worry in Ash's life related to all of this. I sometimes hate the 'we can't be together because of...' trope, but I loved how it was handled here. Ash took the time and care to be sure that Janvier knew why she hesitated, why she didn't let their relationship go past a certain point before he understood.

When she did tell him, when he understood the terrible truth, I love how they decided to take life and live it. Full throttle. No holding back, no reservations. Their romance was incredibly poignant and sweet - and sexy - to me. I love their banter, their play. It brought light to a very (possibly) dark story.

Being that this book is just after the major war that happened in Legion, things are starting to settle back into normality - except for a pervasive threat that comes out of the aftermath. Ash and Janvier are more than up to the task of tracking down this threat and taking care of it, though. And I did find the mystery plot interesting, but - for me - the best part of this book was the relationships, intertwining, heart-breaking, and full of love.

If Archangel's Legion is where I first become truly curious about Naasir, this is the book where I became enamoured of him. Despite being hundreds of years old, a vampire, sexual, predatory, and dangerous, there's such a sense of innocence about him. He's .... not tainted. I found myself enchanted by his thought processes, and my heart broke a little with the bits and pieces of his history that we did get. I can't wait to dive into his book next, again.

Archangel's Shadows was an amazing book. A bit quieter, action-wise, than the last, but no less potent. It might just be my fan-girl speaking, but I think these just keep getting better and better.

Original thoughts:
Ever since Angels' Pawn I've been wanting more of Ashwini and Janvier. Their playful banter with each other charmed me from the beginning. This book just furthers how much I love them both - together and separately. Great addition to the series. Nice continuation of events from previous books, and I loved seeing more of Raphael, Elena and the rest. I especially, especially loved learning so much (and yet not enough) more about Naasir. Whom I love. More. Now. Please.

5 Nalini Did It Again Stars

“I’ll show you things that’ll make you laugh in delight, scream in passion, cry for the sheer joy of it.”

This book is the full story of Janvier and Ashwini, a romance that started in the Angels' Pawn novella. Angels' Pawn was just a small taste of what an awesome pair Ash and Janvier would make one day. Their romance is full of witty remarks and entertaining back and forths. It was honestly a delight to read. The fact that both of them are also badasses didn't hurt.

I'll be honest here and say that Janvier was the more entertaining of the two. Every other page he would say something that had me laughing to tears. But Ash has a pretty heavy secret so I will allow her some gloom.

Our main couple in the series Raphael and Elena also have a big role in this book with the POV changing to them a lot of times. These two never lose a chance to shine and this book only emphasized how awesome they can be. Many funny moments there too.

But as much as I loved everyone else in the book, and I did love them a lot, the one who stole the spotlight was Naasir. He is now officialy my favorite of the Seven and I just can't wait to see what happens with him. PLEASE NS, PLEASE give him an awesome story, as special and unique as he is.

I love how slightly feral, not all that civilised and completely hilarious he can be. The "carnivorous plant" gift was one of my favorite moments in the book.

And this moment was the most powerful in my opinion, even more than the Ash+Janvier ones.

“He'd never forget what Naasir had said to him when Dmitri yelled that he didn't intend to bury another child and that Naasir needed to have a care for his life.
“Am I a person, Dmitri? Will you be sad if I die?”
Hardened and cruel though he’d become, the innocent question had shaken him. “Yes,” he’d said, as honest in his answer as Naasir had been in his question. “You are a person. You are Naasir. I’ll lose a piece of me if you die and it’s a piece I’ll never get back.”
Naasir had stared at him for a long time before coming over to hug him. “Okay, Dmitri. I’m sorry. I didn't know I was a person before.”

I swear I teared up at the scene. So moving.

The plot was interesting with the whole "leathal drug that shouldn't exist" deal and Ash and Janvier proved that they can kick some serious ass if they want but it wasn't the strongest part of the book. Watching the relationships between the characters grow and develop was the books strong feature. One other relationship I loved was the friendship that Elena has started to develop with the Legion. Also some seriously AMAZING Aodhan and Ilium friendhip moments. Aodhan is getting better!! I predict more awesomeness to come.

The angels, vampires, hunters and humans are all dealing with the aftermath of the big war that just occurred. Raphael, Elena and The Seven are trying to get the city back on its feet and celebrate their victory. But there's some horrific deaths turning up and a new nasty drug on the street that's threatening everything.

As this series gets more advanced, the story line gets more complicated. It is the story of Ashwini (Ash) and Janvier but unfortunately that only accounts for maybe fifty percent of the book. Naturally, Raphael and Elena are a big part of the story (not that I'm complaining one bit), as well as, quite a few other major characters.

One in particular is Naasir. He never really caught my attention before but he certainly has it now. WOW! I really love when the H is awkward about love so I can't wait for his story and *fingers crossed* it's next...or at least soon.

But back to Ash and Janvier...I really enjoyed them but I was a little let down. I was wishing for more of a chase. I loved them in the novella, Angels' Pawn, and they are still quite engaging with each other but the pursuit is over. They both know they want each other and now it's just deciding if that's what's best for both of them. Ash has some history she needs to share and she doesn't think it's a good thing.

description

And Javier...OMG, I just love that Cajun, cher. Something about those Cajun boys just do it for me. Yummo!

But as they work on finding the murderer, they become closer and closer. It just takes a while to get >THIS< close and it was hard to be patient! I really wasn't sure if things were gonna happen!

description

And the ending? I was shocked! I didn't expect Ash to do that...but it's a good thing. And I was happy to get a little tidbit about Vivek and the good news about Ransom that seemed almost too good?

I'm loving Nalini's books and for the past month or so I've been re-reading her Guild Hunter and Psy-Changelings series. I cannot get enough of her amazing plots and the awesome characters. You know you'll get just enough action to satisfy your cravings. And don't even get me started on the romance and wonderful heroes. I mean...yum-yum.

In this book we got to see the aftermath of war and how a new evil threatened to destroy the newly peace and how everyone got involved in solving that problem. I loved the many POVs, since I missed the characters from previous books. I also loved Raphael and Elena, obviously, but Ash and Janvier made a solid couple as well. I liked the dynamics and the playfulness in their relationship. There was some angst about Ash's future but in the end I liked how it all played out. All in all, this story is one of my new favs.

"You were always meant to be mine."
~Sigh~
"Neither one of us has ever been in control of the thing between us. It has its own stubborn, relentless will."
Though Ashwini and Janvier's story fell a bit short for me (in comparison to Jason and Mahiya's for example), it was still written by Nalini Singh, which means it was far superior to a lot of things I read.
Warm and strong, his scent earthy and familiar, he made the bruises inside her hurt less, her muscles no longer as taut.
Anyway, the best part of Archangel's Shadows was just hanging out in the Guild Hunter world. Elena's anxiety over her mother-in-law's visit was so entertaining, as were her interactions with Naasir . . . whose book is next!

4.5 Honey Pot Stars

Ashwini and Janvier…YES!!! We are back on track. Okay so I’m straight up going to say that I really prefer the stories that aren’t centered on Elena and Raphael. The stories that have other characters as the main players seem to appeal more to me. That could just be because I we’ve had four stories centered on them or that I struggle with them as a couple sometimes. But Ash and Janvier’s story is too much fun.

He has been chasing her forever relentlessly and the more she struggles to keep distance between them the more devoted he is. But it isn’t in a creepy way it is always in a playful fun way that you know she wants him just as badly but is running away from it.
He’d tracked her down in remote corners of the world, aggravated her to the point where she’d once tied him up and emptied a large pot of honey on his head, before pretending to leave him for the insects.
He’d laughed in delight and cut himself free using a hidden blade, then chased her through the trees, threatening to make her lick every drop of the sweet, sticky stuff off his body.

Ash and Janvier spend this book working together to find something that has been stealing women and leaving them as husks of themselves. They don’t have a lot to go on so it could be a Vampire or an Angel causing this destruction in the aftermath of the war in the city. We the reader get some creeptastic insights into the mind the of thing doing this but that still doesn’t give away who/what it is.
Her eyes were drenched in terror.
Raising a hand, the one-who-waited stroked her cheek as her throat worked, the scream swallowed up by the pungent miasma of her fear.
“Not tonight.” A rasp, its throat a ruin. “I have fed.” The hunger came often, but the one-who-waited had learned to discipline that voracious need, because without discipline it would become a slave to those urges rather than a master of them.

I really liked the way this plot arc unfolded and how it added to the ongoing storyline of the cascade and how it is changing the power of some of the people.

Raphael and Elena make some appearances as Elena learns to deal with her mother in law and I liked the few things we found out about the Legion in this book. But the side character that totally stole the show was Nassir. I, like Elena, have no idea what he is but I am totally intrigued and really can’t wait to read his story.

There was this that made me think that Nassir is a little more animal than human/vampire whatever

And if that wasn’t enough later there was this.
“Naasir stretched lazily before settling back into his previous position. “I’m old enough now, and I want someone to play with like you play with Janvier and Raphael does with Elena. Even Dmitri plays with Honor.” This seemed to fascinate him. “The rules are secret in each game. I want to have secret rules with a woman who . . .” A long pause. “A woman who knows me, understands what I am, and who wants to have secret rules with me.”

I’m so interested in what that courtship/relationship is going to look like. Nassir might have even overshadowed Ash and Janvier a little as he was this cute third wheel to them sometimes.

There are a few others that I’m really interested in. Venom and Sorrow only got vague mentions in this book but I’m really excited to see the direction that Sorrow’s character eventually takes. Elena building a guard or magnificent seven of her own is getting a little fuller all of the time and I’m interested to see Vevick after his transformation.

Ash’s journey was a bit emotional and totally loved how and where they ended up by the end. This was one of those romances that you know they have been headed this direction for years so when the brakes are finally off and they go full tilt to the end it is believable.

Still Nassir’s book is next and I am beyond excited for that.

Barely 3 stars. This just didn't do it for me. I got tired of Ash's fatalistic view of everything and ticking time bomb mentality. Sure, it goes with her history, but it was annoying. I didn't enjoy her POV like I thought I would. I liked Janvier. He was funny and dedicatedly sweet to Ash. The best parts of this story for me were the continuation of Elena and Raphael's story and Naasir. Naasir has been a very background character until the last book and I enjoyed his inclusion. Fingers crossed his book is good. The plot of this book was really boring and even more so when compared to the previous book having warfare. I wish this plot had been more interesting.

02/11/2016 Buddy read with the awesome Wednesday UF group over at BB&B

“Don’t let immortality do that to you,” she whispered. “Don’t let it steal your soul.”
Moss green eyes held her own. “It is, others tell me, far easier to stay human if you split your heart in two and give one part to another to keep.”

I fell in love with Janvier and Aswini in the novella Angels’ Pawn, and I’m so happy that they got their own novel.

He would not—could not—let her die. Not the tempestuous storm that was her.
The light would go out of the world if she was gone.

Janvier is everything I love in a hero: he’s wickedly sexy, flirty and charming, funny and so in love with Ashwini that I wanted to be her. I adore that ever since he met her she was the only one for him. He’s been patiently wooing her, breaking down the walls around her heart with every flirty game he played with her. I love that despite being immortal for over 200 years, he hasn’t lost his humanity, his good soul.

I want to grow old with you, she thought on a heartbreaking surge of love, to see the world with you, to fight with you, to kiss your sinful, laughing mouth a million times.

Ashwini is an amazing heroine, and I just love her. She’s a Guild Hunter, so of course she’s tough and kickass. But Ashwini is also broken by her tragic past and her gift of sensing others’ secrets by touch. I love that Janvier is one of the few people who doesn’t trigger her gift, how well she has come to know him from their years of hunting games. And it was so wonderful how much being with him tempted her to give into what they both wanted, even though she was so afraid that her gift would mean they could never have a future.

This, this was love. The kind that forever changed a man.
If he survived Ash, he would no longer be the Janvier she knew—he’d be a man without a heart, his buried with her. In time, he’d become like the immortals he so despised, the ones for whom life held no meaning, and who’d attempt any cruelty in an effort to feel again.
No, whatever Ashwini’s life span, it would be his, too.

I just love Janvier and Ashwini together, how passionately and intensely they love each other, how hard they fought to get their HEA. There were some very nail-biting moments, where I feared that their HEA wouldn’t happen, but luckily Nalini Singh did not disappoint. No one writes romance like this author, and with this book she showed once again why she’s my favorite. Oh, and we finally find out the details about the mysterious honey incident, and it was fantastic :-D

I’m sorry. I didn’t know I was a person before.”

There was quite a lot of Raphael, Elena and his Seven, and as always I love the tender and spicy moments between Raphael and Elena, and it’s wonderful seeing Elena interact with the Seven, and the bonds she is forming with them. We learn more about Naasir, and I’m utterly captivated by this vampire who is definitely unlike any other vampire in this series. And the history and current moments between Dmitri and Naasir is so special and seeing how much Naasir means to Dmitri just made me love him. It’s adorable that Naasir has decided he wants a mate, someone he can play games with, and I really can’t wait to read his book :-D. And it’s wonderful seeing the Legion becoming more like individuals than just being weapons, and how good Elena is with them.

The plot was great with a steady pace and many humorous moments. I like that with every book Nalini gives us more insight into the immortal lives of the angels and the vampires, and while at first we only saw the cruelty immortality has brought to them, we also now see that there are some who treasure mortality and the companions and friends they have made and lost.

Ash knew he loved her, would always love her. Anything she wanted, he’d give her . . . except for her mortality.
He’d waited more than two hundred years for her. How could she ask him to just let her go?

Janvier and Aswini’s book was everything I had hoped for and more. I love how this series just continues in strength and awesomeness, and I can’t wait to read the next book. Highly recommended to all UF and PNR fans.

Original review

Five AMAZING stars

I’ve been waiting for Janvier and Ashwini’s book for what feels like forever, and I was not disappointed. I had such extreme reactions while reading this book, feeling like gorging on the book and reading it as fast as I can while simultaneously wanting to savour the book, read as slowly as possible so that it doesn’t end.

Nalini Singh has such a way with words, especially with the feelings between Janvier and Ashwini, I honestly felt like I could feel, touch and see how Janvier feels about his Ashblade. I absolutely love Janvier! I must admit I was so worried that Janvier and Ash wouldn’t have the HEA that I wanted for them, my heart felt like it was breaking because it just seemed impossible for them to have their eternity together, luckily everything work out in the end.

There was quite a lot of Raphael, Elena and his Seven, and although I loved reading about all of them, there were times I really just wanted more of Janvier and Ashwini :-)

This book certainly met all my important requirements for a great book: wonderful romance, suspense and great storyline.

I don’t know how Ms. Singh does it every time, but this book was another winner.

Technically this was Ashwini and Janvier's story. Instead of solely focusing on them, this was more of an update of all the side characters. We also got more of our beloved couple, Raphael and Elena. As much as I love the side characters, this is what I seem to like more with this particular series.

I truly enjoyed each and every character in this book, but some really stood out for me. First of all, Ashwini and Janvier floored me with how devoted they were to each other by the end of this book. I really felt for Ashwini when we got more of her back story and what happened with her siblings. Janvier? The fact that he didn't want to live when she was gone spoke volumes about his love.

Next up was the legion. How cool are they? I loved the parts of the book they made an appearance in. I also loved how Elena wanted to do more with them instead of just taking advantage of what they were, and why there were there. She really does bring more to the picture even though we all love Raphael so much.

The one I really want to talk about is Naasir. HOLY. COW. What an intriguing side character Naasir turned out to be. I loved him. Like really, really, loved him. I can't even begin to describe why he was so awesome. You just need to experience all that is Naasir. I want his book. Like now.

You know how Nalini has a way of putting these little interesting tidbits about secondary characters in her books? It's one of the reasons I don't want any of her series to ever be over. She teased us with Ash and Janvier since Angels' Blood and yes, they are finally hooking up! :D
So, we know they danced around each other since forever- angel would put a hit on Janvier and when Ash is just about to catch him, Janvier would make piece with angel in question. In immortal terms, that's flirting. Their romance was pretty straight forward, since we know and everybody in Tower and GH Academy know they are meant to be.:P
It's not a bad idea (bad it's not necessary) to read Angel's Pawn, novella in Angels' Flight anthology where we get to meet Janvier for the first time. I personally reread it, because I remembered that Ash's ability to feel other people's secrets is mentioned and that's a thing in this book. Ash is super funny, kick-ass hunter I loved the moment she appeared in book #1, but Janvier is this smooth-talking, charm-you-to-death Cajun whose debt we get to glimpse in this one. Comparing to other players, Seven and archangels, Janvier is a baby in terms of power, but he is an amazing asset because he makes friends easy and he is an excellent negotiator. That kind of person appears to be self-centered, but his loyalty was unquestionable.
He and Ash make a great team and we get to see that because they are working together on discovering who is behind strange murders around the city.
At this point of series, you can't step into story without reading previous books, since archangel's war is a big part of this story. I personally love it since everyone in Cadre has humungous egos and their politics is either walking around on egg shells or pissing contest. :D This plot gets more and more complicated with each new book, Cascade, complications on Neha's territory, Michaela... just name it. It doesn't help that Cadre is extremely difficult to kill, so every problem seems to be solved...for some time. There is too many loose threads and the book where this is going to be settled is New York is recovering from attack and preventing accidents is more important than ever. Raphael needs to look strong not just to Cadre, but to public as well, and he has one hell of team to help him. I love how Elena's character developed- she is so different from these angels, bur she is adapting to Raphael's world without losing any part of her mortal soul. I was afraid few books ago that her guild hunter gig will be in collision with her duties as consort, but she manages to be both, without any complaint. And Raphael is happy to have her, since she knows just what city and people need- a block party. ;) she is also the only one who is making friends with Legion who are still being their lovely cryptic and weird as ever. ;)
Now, you already know who are usual favorites: Illium and Aodhan. They are awesome here as well.
BUT
The one who stole the show completely is Naasir. Naasir is this...this
crazy, adorable little psycho and you will love him. His lines are...

description

Yeah, prepare to love that guy. I thought he was the one in Seven I will be totally cool about and not gushing!
Nope, I love him from tips of his silver hair to his . :)))) Shadow Team FTW!

So, I'll finish this the same way I started:
You know how Nalini has a way of putting these little interesting tidbits about secondary characters in her books? It's one of the reasons I don't want any of her series to ever be over.:D So, of course I started thinking where can she go next.
Aodhan? Sparkle just got back among friends, so I don't know if he's ready.
Illium? Just the thought of his book...be still my heart.
Back to Elena and Raphael? I would be on board with that as well.
Naasir? I think I made myself clear when it comes to him.
Hmm... I think that Venom is ready, so let's keep our fingers crossed. :)

“I’m yours.” Her fingers trembled as she curved them around the side of his neck. “Only ever yours.”

A guild hunter x a golden retriever of a vampire on a mission to uncover a murder mystery? This was a delightful read!

Absolutely adored the flirty banter between Ashwini and Janvier, they've been head over heels for each other for a while but certain circumstances drew lines between them.

I would say aside from the charming and humurous interactions between this pairing and the other characters, this installment is a tad darker (though Archangel's Blade remains the darkest in the series).

Remember this series should be read in order, so much of the plot is a continuation of what happened in the past books.

I am officially sold on Ash and Janvier.

I want to weep at how cute and sweet and caring they are to each other.

Here are some of my thoughts:
• Ash is badass. No doubt about that. Her backstory made me feel for her so much.
• Janvier. Ugh. He can’t be anymore perfect. There are no words for him. He is fun-loving and serious at the exact perfect moments for Ash. He certainly supports Ash with both his humor and his deep understanding and acceptance of her. He is so loyal, honest, and straightforward – agh.
• Ash and Janvier. I love the way they banter. They just connect so well. I also adore their serious moments. It is a relationship where everything about the way they feel each other falls into place, and only outside forces can really keep them apart (which is indeed the crux of this book). They have quiet understanding and the type of comfort around each other that everyone can’t help but want and admire.
• I didn’t care for Naasir in the previous book (like he seemed all right, but I felt nothing for his character). However, now I officially think he is one of the cutest characters in this series. I love that he pretty much acts like a cat/tiger, and he is so fond of Honoria and Ash. The way he cares about her opinion, like she is a mother. I am honestly surprised by his backstory with Dimitri, being almost like a son to him. (The flashback scene was shockingly sweet and adorable coming from both of them.) This certainly has given me a better idea of his character. He is almost child-like, almost innocent (although he definitely isn’t). He is very much an amusing character, with the interesting way that he talks, acts, and thinks. Anyway, I can’t wait to see his book (which is next).
• Caliane is finally being chill towards Elena, yay!
• Izak is so pure and adorable. Please let no one ruin him.
• I love how it is pretty clear how Elena is learning and earning her place as Raphael’s consort – talking to the vampire leaders on his behalf and going to the infirmary to help their people.
• The issues brought up in this book – sad, heartbreaking, terrifying, and disgusting. I’m glad the characters (and Singh) believe in justice.
• Raphael&Elena, Dimitri&Honor, Jason&Mahiya – always a delight to see.
• Montgomery is MVP.
• I like the interesting development with the Legion and the gardening aspect. It would be amazing if we can see more and more of these characters becoming individualistic and humane.

Overall, 4 stars for superb characters and relationships + amazing, thoughtful plot as always.

Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers below)
Happy/satisfying ending?
Love triangle? Cheating? Angst level? Other things to note?
Tears-worthy?
Humor?
Favorite scenes?
What age level would be appropriate?
------------
I like Ash and Janvier and their bantering in the glimpses we have seen of them so far, but I feel not the most excited for their book. I'm hoping Singh will change my mind after reading this one because she pretty much never disappoints.

Review @ Vanilla & Spice Books

Nalini gives us the story of Ashwini and Janvier in this installment. It has the trademark formula of a mystery and love set in her Guildhunter world.

Ashwini is Janvier's one and only. Ever since the hunter chased him across the bayous of his homelands he has fallen for her. Nothing like a crossbow at your throat to make you go gaga over a girl, right? Janvier is the cheeky, charming and hot Cajun vampire who Ash can barely resist. If it wasn't for her secret this tough-as-nails lady would be all over his sexy southern ass.

This time the plot had even more mystery elements than Ms. Singh's prior books, I found. When emaciated, sucked dry corpses start popping up and a dangerous vampire drug makes its appearance Ash and Janvier are asked to combine their forces and find the people behind this. Having partnered before they are in sync with everything they do.

Ash has everything I look for in a heroine. Kindness, toughness, passion, humor. I don't get why she held on to her secret for that long, I didn't think it was something that she couldn't divulge so that felt a little bit dragged out.

Janvier, oh Janvier. What a hero. So freaking adorable, hot and cheeky. The little things he does for his hunter are swoonworthy. He is fiercely loyal and wears his heart on his tongue. Out of all the heroes in the Guildhunter world he is the most accessible. The most lovable.

Nalini Singh paints a vidid picture of the world and with her detailed description you can see the places she takes us. Her words are lyrical and the interactions of her characters, side or main, are soulful, their connections tangible. She ties up all necessary ends and leaves the important story arc open so that we can look forward to the next book. As always we get to see a bit of Bluebell and Aodhan, lots of Raphael and Ellie, some Honor and Dmitri.

Naasir has a lot of screen time which has me absolutely thrilled about the next book. His journey to bliss will be interesting as he is still a mystery to me. Keir got some attention, too and I wonder if we get an MM story for him. Oh I don't even know if we get his story, dammit, but I just assume we will ;)

Alltogether I was again sucked into the Guildhunter world and loved every minute - totally satisfying read.

I FINALLY BEAT MY BOOK SLUMP!!! I think this is the first book I finished in months. Hopefully I'm now back to reading at my normal pace.

Onto the book review now.

Overall 3.5

For me, the first half of the book was a 4 star rating, and the second half was 3. Hence 3.5

I did get the feeling that this was a filler book in the series since not much happened to move the story forward.

Also, one thing that I noticed is that, at least for me, this book focused much less on the main couple than the other ones in the series. I love Ellie and Raphael so whenever we got their POVs and then switched back to Ash and Janvier, I caught myself being a tiny bit disappointed. I felt like this was a cast book and not just about the main couple if that makes sense.

The "solution" to Ash's "problem" was kind of obvious to me so I'm not sure why it took them the whole book to figure it out but oh well

I loved getting to know more about Naasir and I'm so excited for his book.

Overall, this was a great book but definitely not my favourite in the series.

Fans of the series will be trilled to note that ARCHANGEL’S SHADOWS is Ash and Janvier’s book. As if the novella wasn’t enough, Singh shines the spotlight on the kickass Guild Hunter and our favorite Cajun hottie while also hitting us with an intriguing mystery as well.

Bodies are showing up in various times and places, all involving some suspicious and similar traits. Tasked with finding out who is responsible for this, Ash must go hunting for this unknown killer. Yet Janvier isn’t willing to let her go alone, especially not when he considers her his.

Ash still has that tough exterior which makes her an easy one to love. However, Singh does reveal details of her past that are also quite devastating. While it adds a certain touch of sadness to the book, it also adds so much more depth to her character as well. I felt that I grew to love her more with this book.

I absolutely adored Janvier before reading this book but found myself loving him more now. His unconditional love for Ash is evident from the first page and only becomes more obvious as the story goes on. Paired with the mystery, Singh infuses this story with so much action and suspense, it actually reminds me more of a typical Urban Fantasy with a Nalini Singh twist rather than just your regular romance.

Of course, Singh’s authorial voice remains a strong presence in this book, painting vivid images with her words. The lyrical approach definitely adds another dimension to the series and can be seen as it’s own character with that it brings to this series.

The entire cast of characters are present, some getting more time than others. However, there is one character in particular that intrigued me. We haven’t heard much about Naasir until now. But Singh still leaves a lot of unanswered questions about him. It makes me very excited to see who she will focus on next in the next book. I’ve got my eye on a certain blue-winged angel I’m hoping gets his book told soon too.

ARCHANGEL’S SHADOWS takes the action and suspense of Urban Fantasy and the passion and intimacy of romance and blends them effortlessly together to create a story that grips you until the very end.
