Haven Equals Safety. The slogan is emblazoned on the minds of every Haven employee. But for Glory, life inside the domed city is anything but safe. After rescuing her brother, Glory returns to Haven as a double agent to locate and save fellow Deviants. Far from her family and from Burn, Glory faces danger at every turn as she trains to be a Compliance Officer--to track and subdue her own kind--while she works undercover to rescue as many Deviants as she can. When people she trusts turn against her and a powerful member of Management takes her under her wing, Glory questions everything she believes and can no longer tell her allies from her enemies. A Deviant, a member of the secret police, a double agent--Glory fights to save others, but can she save herself?
Maureen has always been making up stories, but side-tracked by a persistent practical side, it took her a few years to channel her energy into writing novels. After escaping a previous career in finance and accounting, she hasn't looked back.
Aside from her love of books, she's passionate about films, fine handcrafted objects and shoes.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads to review.
Maureen McGowan's Deviants series just keeps getting better and more addicting. This book starts off a few months after the first ended. Glory is going through her Comp training with Cal. It's rough on her and she's considered the weakest in the class. Her dating license with Cal still exists but that relationship is strained. She is still working both sides of the wall. She is still lying to everyone about her Deviance.
It was interesting seeing this stronger more confident side to Glory in this book. She's without family now that they are Outside. She's without Burn whom she still doesn't understand her feelings for. But she's saved 37 deviants from being discovered and killed and still doesn't believe this penance is enough. She's tortured by the truth about her mother.
Her relationship with Mrs. Kalin is interesting and I guessed that truth early on. Bearing a passing resemblance to Glory's mother suddenly she's treating her like a daughter loving and nurturing her when that's exactly what Glory wants most. Suddenly Glory finds herself trusting this member of management who should have been her enemy even when the life of her friend is on the line.
Glory's relationship with Cal is different too. He's still the boy she always loved but she's no longer the girl and she knows it can never work between them because her deviance is the very thing he hates. They will never work once he learns the truth. Yet feelings are still there. I really liked how competition for Cal's feelings was introduced and suddenly Glory stood to lose him sooner than expected and she wasn't okay with that. Suddenly she has to fight for Cal. And yet Burn pops up again and there's some really intense scenes there and I really don't know who I'm rooting for most out of those two.
Then there was the double agent agenda. It was great seeing Glory save deviants and make such a turn around. I wish it had been featured more. Then her mission through Belando is to find a mole with in her Comp training group. I never really understood her agenda with this since the mole was somewhat a good thing but at the same time putting lives at risk. The mole was working with the rebels who also want to bring down management just like Glory's FA Outsiders. However their agenda was a little less - who care if innocent people suffer for the greater good -mentality. And by the way- the mole's identity was the best surprise ever. Then there was Kalin's agenda and by then I was worried there was just way too many agenda's and sides in this book and Glory would end up being a quadruple agent.
A lot of this book was non-stop action and sometimes it was crazy suspenseful. But it was mostly still the same as the first - about a girl living with the power to kill, the very power even the ones she loves would kill her for possessing. Now that everything has changed after that whooper of an ending I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
If I'd known how good this was, I would have bumped it straight to the top of my to-read pile. Compliance is book 2 in the series, but it can stand on its own. You won't have a full understanding of the backstory, but it wasn't confusing; I haven't (yet) read the first one, but will remedy that shortly...
The characters' reactions and emotions seemed painfully real, relationships suffer from the same miscommunications, misunderstandings, loyalty, love and distrust as those in the real world, and I'm now most frustrated that I have to wait for the third book to be written! I hope reading Deviants (and then, no doubt, re-reading Compliance to get a better understanding of the series as a whole) will assuage this somewhat.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars I'm enjoying this series. Both the text and the audio are included in KindleUnlimited. It was nice to finish the first book and be able to move onto book 2 immediately, and then to book 3. I like the consistency of the covers and how the storyline does come to a conclusion in each book. Book 1, we learn about the world, about Glory and the other characters. She makes it outside, then there at the end, goes back/undercover into Haven. Here in book two we learn about her undercover adventures and SPOILER .
I think I perhaps liked this book better, because I was already familiar with the characters and cared about them and I understood the world already. I liked the progression.
I recieved this book via Netgalley I just don't know how to write this review. I actually enjoyed the book. But there was still stuff that continued to bother me the same way it did in the first book. So here is my book breakdown. THE PROS 1.) The pacing. I really enjoyed the quick pacing of this book! It didn't feel like it was dragging at all. There was always something going on. 2.) Glory. I really liked her (for the most part) in this book. She acted stronger in this book and all of her actions had reasons. She was still dealing with the effects of learning the truth about how her mother really died and it seemed realistic how she tried to distance herself from other people. 3.) Cal. Okay, I personally like him waaaayyyy better then Burn. Why? Well he is not extremely violent (although he was a bit more angry in this book) and he really cares about Glory. Which is really great!!! I do fear that Glory might end up choosing Burn over him, which... don't even want to think about that. Back to reasons why I like Cal. He was patient with Glory and really tried to understand what she was going through (even though she wasn't telling him the truth) He did change a bit from the first book, but he remained a great character. 4.) I really liked the whole thing with the rebels trying to gain control of Haven. I liked the characters involved with that and wished we had seen more to do with that aspect of the book. 5.) The mole. I was really not expecting who the mole turned out to be. (Glory was looking for someone within the COTs who was a deviant.) Should I have seen it coming. Probably, but I didn't!! Which made it a great twist and super fun!! 6.) The introduction of the new character. I can't really go into this character without giving a lot away, so I'll just leave it by saying, this character really intrigued me (especially her Deviant) and I can't wait to learn more. 7.) Burn was not involved throughout a lot of the book and the focus was more on Glory's relationship with Cal! With was great!!! And the parts that Burn was present, I found I didn't mind him as much as I did in the first book! (Shocking isn't it?) 8.) I loved learning about some of the experiments they were doing in The Hospital. I can't wait to read more in the next book!! THE CONS 1.) When I first saw this cover, I was shocked! The last one had really caught my eye, but this one....The girl looks like she smells something bad! Just....this is not a book I would buy if I hadn't wanted to find out what happens next. Because no matter what people may say, I personally will always judge a book by its cover. 2.) Somehow Glory manages to lie to everyone, but she is A TERRIBLE LIAR!!! Even she says it's true. Everyone around her is like, You're not telling me the truth, but whatever, it's not like I care! I know she was always a bad liar, but her lying skills have gone even further down hill. (If that's possible) 3.) I was really disappointed with the "villain." Not only was said villain not a big surprise, the reason why the villain was in control seemed so obvious. I really wish the author had gone kind of crazy and wrote it differently. Like throw in a character who you would never think would be the bad guy, but give you great reasons as to why..... 4.) There was no Drake in this book! In the first book he was one of my favorite characters, but he was only mentioned in passing! And Glory didn't seem to upset over her brother's "death." (Another reason why she is a terrible liar!!) 5.) There was a death for the shock value. There seemed to be no reason why this character died. The character died purely so I could say....OMG he is dead!!! How is this possible??? NOOOOO!!!!!! 6.) Glory's susceptibility. Glory was susceptible to a lot through out the book. There were parts where I just couldn't understand what Glory was doing. I was provided with a reason, but I kept thinking, Glory's stronger than that! How come this is happening??? 7.) I have a bad feeling about who Glory's going to end up with. There is nothing final about it, but I feel like she will go for the person I hate.... 8.) HOW WAS GLORY NOT CAUGHT??? She was constantly wandering around places she was not supposed to go. She was bringing other people with her to these places. She must have been loud. And yet she avoids all detection until it is at a convenient point in the progression of the story. And on top of that Cal was always covering for her! How was this not suspicious??? OVERALL I really think that this book was an improvement over the last one! While the last one was good (And had a much better cover) I grew attached to the characters during the course of this book more than I did in the last one. I feel like I understand the characters better. This review took me forever to write, for the reason that my thoughts are all over the place. I was intrigued by several of the characters and I really am excited about the next book in this series. So many times the second book feels like a filler, but in this case it was not! It was a great individual read with great character development! WHY THE BOOK WENT DOWN TO 3.75 STARS: -A predictable villain with a predictable plan -Lack of Drake -Glory was not very strong towards the end -The death that really was not needed -Glory's perfect evasion skills
WOULD I READ THIS BOOK: YES, it was pretty good WOULD I BUT THIS BOOK: PROBABLY WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: MAYBE, If you read the first one and liked it or were curious about the next book. WILL I READ THE NEXT BOOK: I NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS, SO YES!!! WILL I READ MORE BY THIS AUTHOR: YES, I really enjoy her writing style and her stories are unique. If she could improve some of her characters **cough cough, Burn** then I think I might really enjoy her books!
If you have NOT read Deviants, please read with caution. There are some spoilers that were unavoidable. Proceed with caution . . .
Someone please yell at me when I put books off because I really shouldn't. This book came out in June and I've had it since like April or something but yet I just read it now . . . what? Ever do that with second books? I don't know if it's because I'm afraid of being disappointed when I loved the first book as much as I did with Deviants or if because I'm afraid of the terrible cliffhangers most second books in a series have. I put books off and I really wish I hadn't. Compliance is one of those books (minus the killer cliffhanger).
Deviants kind of blew me away; I didn't think I'd love it as much as I did but it was amazing. I needed more after finishing it and I especially needed more of Burn but the way the first book ended I wasn't sure how much more we'd get of him. Oh, we get more of him but we also get more of Cal. Now, I know love triangles are very common in Young Adult books and most cases they're annoying and you usually have a favorite in mind, right? While I freaking love Burn (oh do I love him), I also really like Cal. He's charming, loyal, intelligent and most importantly is he loves Glory. What girl doesn't want a guy like that? Where Burn isn't so charming and more importantly, Burn is dangerous. His deviance isn't under control and it's caused him to kill people who were on his side in the past and who knows if or when that might happen again. While I love the love interests that's the not the main aspect of this book.
Glory has come back to Haven to help rescue Deviants from under the glass and deliver them to the FA (Freedom Army) on the Outside. She's saved so many young lives but she's also training as Comp. Not to mention spying for the head of Compliance to try and find the mole located in the Comp; one that is working with the Deviant terrorists. Ones that have killed innocent people to make a statement but the question is, is it the right kind of statement to be making? Glory doesn't think so and I agree with her. Wanting a change doesn't have to end with the death's of so many innocent people. Target those who have done wrong, who are making the community terrified of your kind. Killing innocent people only proves the Management's point - Deviants are dangerous.
Compliance was more action packed (believe it or not), filled to the brim of drama and many heart aches and in some cases, maybe even a few tears? The characters are fantastic - you'll find yourself becoming more connected to the characters we met in Deviants but you'll also find yourself hating some of the ones we just met. The build up for the next book and the thought of all that's going to come just makes me giddy - I can't wait to read what will happen next.
Go out and get yourself a copy of Deviants, I'm sure you'll like it and then you can move on to this book, Compliance. You'll fall in love with the characters, like I have, the story, the world the author's created and the use of your imagination - let it run wild with this book! Oh, and did I mention the fact that there's not one but TWO gorgeous guys to swoon over? Yeah, there's always that!
Thank you so much to Amazon Children's Publishing for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think I enjoy this series for a lot of the reasons many readers liked the Divergent series (which wasn't my bag at all). It's quickly paced with lots of conflict and tough choices, which makes for a very engaging read (listen, in my case). Like I said when I wrote a little thing about Deviants on Goodreads, I really like the corporation as the Big Bad in this world and the X-Men/super-hero vibe is one that really works for me, and the love triangle really works in this series as well (it exists for a reason, not just to create tension). I also like how Glory has really transformed over the course of these two books.
So I promised myself no more books until I got some of the current inventory read, but after reading Deviants I HAD TO download Compliance as soon as it was available. And I was NOT disappointed. I loved the book!! I thought Ms McGowan did an excellent job progressing the story and the characters. There are so many comments I want to make, but I don't want to do any spoilers. Suffice to say, I highly recommend the book. It is YA, and I (unfortuantely) am not, so I'm trying to get my daughter to read it next. My only question is....when is the next book coming?
This series is really enjoyable, so far, and would make a fantastic Hunger Games read-alike: it's a future dystopia with a strong female character who grows up in poverty and has low self-awareness; and not only that, but there's also a love triangle. Instead of a largish empire run by a small elite city, it's more of a corporatist elite controlling life in a dome, and instead of a fight-to-the-death game, there are mutants and non-mutants. But, seriously, it hits a lot of the same buttons.
I would give this book a 4.5 star. It was very fast paced. I could feel the conflict and emotions that Glory experienced in the book. I'm so ready to find out what happens next.
A decent development, suffers from book 2 syndrome
This book is a good development of the themes set out in the first book. The ideas grow and it plants the seeds that will eventually come to define the 3rd book. It was still enjoyable and expanded on the adventure story and the structure of Haven. Unfortunately it suffers from the problem so many second books in a trilogy do, namely, that it’s been left trying to fill the gap between its siblings. The first book is fresh and full of new ideas. The third book is the dramatic conclusion and has all the gravitas of the finally. The second book has to do the work. The second book has to expand on the first books direction and lay the groundwork for what’s to come in book 3. The second book is often a slog for those reasons. I’m happy to say this one manages to keep the adventure story moving and exciting even if it losses the chance to strike its own path. Still worth the time and enjoyable in its own way.
My feelings about this book are right along the same lines as my thoughts on the first one - ie. Standard dystopian, often annoying main character, love triangle, but yet still compelled to finish it.
My one major complaint about Compliance is that I saw the "twist" coming a mile away.
Again, solid 3 star book. I will be checking out the final book in the series to see how it ends.
This series must be read in order. The first book is "Deviants". This is the second book. I can't wait to read "Glory"!
Glory is back in Haven training to be a Compliance Officer... And back with Cal... Though she feels like she is betraying him and Burn both. Nothing is what it seems. It is impossible to tell where anyone's true loyalties lie. Who is friend and who is foe? How can she tell who to trust? How many Deviants will she actually save? Will she be found out?
Okay, going into book two of the Dust chronicles I was feeling very hopeful. At the end of book 1 I was just starting to like our MC and was excited to see what would happen once Glory was back in Haven this time as a spy for the Freedom Army and a recruit for the domes police system. While I really liked some of the new stuff we were introduced to, I was not happy with Glory. I felt that she was overly cocky in her new position. Granted she did do a lot in a short time and mostly everything worked out pretty well. Also I hated how wishy washy she was about her feelings for both guys.
I liked the story but I'm giving 3 stars because of all the lies and the love triangle. At the end of the book she finally trusts in her friends and her partner that she reveals her secret and they accept it so why lie then? It's always better to tell the truth and to live with its consequences then lie to feel accepted.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm loving this second book in the trilogy. I'm torn between Glory's choices aaaannnddd can't wait to see what happens next and what she decides. This book wasn't as predictable as the first but I did figure out one twist that seemed pretty obvious. Ok, enough reviewing, it's time for me to start book three and see where everything is going.
Really loved the direction this book took with Glory and her plan to help other deviants. The world building is much better in the second of the series. I felt that the book began to take on a much more original Dystopian story.
