It says in the blurb that the Glories find themselves lost in time and space, so I don't think it's a spoiler for me to say that this volume is all about time-travel.

description

I'm still enjoying the story, even with the horrible Lost vibe that's running rampant throughout the storyline. And I'm not saying that Lost had a bad vibe - at least for the first few seasons. But nobody wants a repeat of the long, drawn out, non-answerish finale...10 bjillion seasons later. Sadly, from what my friends have told me, we're stalled at volume 10 right now with no answers in sight.

description

But.
I during this volume, I was really engaged in the time-travel stuff and super interested in finding out more about what the endgame might be. Not to mention, I really love all the twists and turns in the various characters' intentions vs their actions. And the time loop thing is just awesome.

description

I have to agree with those of you who have been complaining that all of the characters tend to blur together because of the art. I like the art (it's pretty!) but they really need to put name tags on these kids. There are (it feels like) 10 girls with straight black hair of varying lengths who all look exactly alike in the face. Maybe poke one of them in the eye so we can get an eyepatch or something?

description

Alright. I'm going to keep reading these, so wish me luck!

Count me among the frustrated. 25 issues in and still not a clue what is going on. This volume promises answers, but fails to deliver, turning the thing into a bit of a joke. There's a lot of Lost in this book, with extensive flashbacks that fail to illuminate present events. When I first started reading this, I was pulled in by the mysterious aspects of what this academy is really all about, but it's wearing thin now. Plus, the art is such that the characters tend to blur together (even with pictures of the main cast at the end and a statement by the author about how careful the artist was to make them distinctive!). I used to think this would be almost impossible to read in individual installments, but it's getting to the point where it is almost impossible to read in collections like this without going back to read what came before, and even then it's about as clear as mud. Guess I'll stick with it for volume 5, but it's hard to imagine that the payoff, if it ever does come, will measure up to readers' expectations (another thing this might have in common with Lost eventually).

Absolutely one of my favourite reads for #GettingGraphic and it just reminded me of why I love comics and particularly this series so much. It's super wacky, there's time travel shenanigans, and there are some excellent pages of art. A really fab series, 4.5*s

The series has definitely improved with every volume, but it sort of continues to be embarrassingly similar to Lost in its pacing and construction. Also my liver would not survive a drinking game that involved taking a sip every time someone asks "but what does it MEAN!" and someone else answers "there's no time to explain!"

That shit gets old REALLY FAST.

But it was pretty neat to see the way some things had been set up since the first volume, though annoying to see the ways in which other things were clunkily obscured. Still very interested in how it will all turn out.

I enjoyed the first 3 volumes of this well enough, but it's gotten to the point were I literally have no clue as to what's going on. There's too much time jumping between the same and different characters. It's very difficult to follow. I think I'm now done with Morning Glories.

Four volumes in and I have more questions than answers. And there were so many time jumps that it's hard to even understand what is going on half the time. I think my journey with this series is over for now. The more I read of it, the more confused and annoyed I grow.

I really need to just read these in a row. Actually, with how many characters and how much shit happens I might not understand what is happening ANYWAY.

So is this one the cast of characters get larger. We find out they're on a mission to...kill the leader? Well kill the leader's son. But you're like "Wait I thought this was teenager story" and it is. But the adults do so much shady shit, that when the kids come in, and they shady, shit gets shadier...yeah. So everytime we get answer another question pops up. Right now we still don't know with all the time traveling and such who is dead and staying dead but we know who's hunting who. Least on the surface level.

Good: I still oddly find this series very captivating. Like Highly enjoyable despite not keeping up with what the fuck is happening. People dying, people betraying each other, but it still remains interesting. Also the art is getting better and the fights and big climax moments are hitting home.

Bad: WAY too many characters. It's hard to keep up (or care) with this many. Like you want to like them, but some look to similar, some look like the one you thought died, people dying but you forgot who they are. yeah, just jumble mess of way too much shit going on and feels like it's being stretched out.

Overall it's still fun and interesting but it's hard to stay attached to anyone in particular. Maybe cause everyone is a asshole but also the story is starting to test me just a bit on where the hell it's going.

Well....

.....

^^^----Is how I felt while I read the end of series 1. We really don't get many answers and this IS the final for series one!!!! It's beyond frustrating to really not find out much of anything but then we get smacked with MORE questions and again no answers....I'm starting to feel this series is worst than LOST with it reveal nothing about the plot line and make the reader/viewer more confused.

I keep coming back because I really enjoy the art style..I love looking over the characters, the colouring and the structure of how everything is drawn....If it didn't have THAT appeal to me I would of already dropped the series a long time ago.

What the hell is going on? Seriously, by the end of Volume 3, I thought I had an understanding as to what was going on, but this volume just completely fucked all my theories about what was going on, and now I'm back to square one.

And I'm annoyed by that.

The writing/story/plot:

Nick Spencer has done a crazy good job at keeping the mystery going with TRUANTS. And, while I'm irritated that I have no idea what is going on, and that nothing has been answered, and I now have even more questions about this story, still he's doing a good job at keeping me hooked. So, yay for him. But seriously, I'm hoping for some answers soon.

We see a lot of backstories in this, and a couple of them have shed light on some character personalities, but the plot itself and what this school is all about and why the students are there, still a mystery. I still have no clue what these children's gifts are, or why the Headmaster wants them. I just want the why question answered. Or the what. Or the who. Something answered soon would be great.

Like:
What's up with the time traveling?
Why is Casey still the main heroine?
What's Jade's role because I think she's more important than what's been shown?
Who/what is David?
The hell is going on at this school?
Is Lara a good guy?
Is Abraham a good guy?
...Is Georgina...a good guy? Is she the Snape of this story?

I have more questions, but you get the point: nothing's being answered as of this volume. I just get to keep adding questions to the list of what I hope gets answered.

The characters:

In addition to hearing more about Ike and his daddy issues with Abraham, we meet six other students. They're friends of Hisao (Jun)'s and had been brought to the school a year earlier. There's the sadistic psycho in charge - Irina. You should never put that type of crazy in charge of anything.

Then there's Akiko and Fortunato. We don't see that much of them but some backstory, but what they do do, is pretty intriguing, and it involves David, so I wanted to know more. Hope to see what that was all about soon.

Also in this new group are Ian and Vanessa, who seem to just be followers of Irina's but I'm hoping they get more developed soon.

And then finally, there's Guillaume. Hisao and his story is really good, personal, but good, and I'm hoping to see more of them together. Although, with the drama near the end of the volume, I don't know if it will be possible.

Other than Ike and a little bit of Jade, Hisao and Hunter got some playtime in this story, but Zoe was of course absent and so was Casey. I'm assuming we'll see more of Casey in Volume 5, because she definitely does still seem to be the main heroine, and the one that will end up saving them all. I'm assuming that she's going to be the one to face off against the Headmaster in the final boss battle.

The other backstories in TRUANTS were for two of the teachers - Lara and Georgina. They're the Headmaster's daughters, and we see why they are the way they are. I think it was to try to get the reader to sympathize (especially for Georgina), but I didn't care.

Overall, I want answers. I'm liking the characters well enough at this point, but with pretty much nothing getting answered, it's just kind of annoying. I'm going to keep reading, but I'm really hoping for something to start tying this story together for me.

The mysteries, shocks, twists and turns get a bit too much in this 'Truants' story arc. The more you learn, the more you that most of you presumptions were way off the mark! Lost in time and space the Glories come face to face with the Truants! 8 out of 12.

I continue to be utterly enamored, amazed, confused and blown away by this series. It's like Lost meets Fringe meets every time traveling, time-effecting show/story meets every single group of confused, scatted kids with secrets. I read Vol. 3 & Vol. 4 together right back to back so they are getting one big review together, because pretty much the storyline is all blurred together now.

I have so many feelings about Abraham & Ike reveals, plus Abraham vs. The Academy (and the fact there are kids being trained in each for something, for each other). The whole allusion to Job was amazing. The continual spin of the Head Mistress vs. Her sisters (and who is on whose side, whether good is something you say or something you do). All the display's of "Faith" this time, with the hands and with the fire in a classroom were amazing touches.

The Casey story, back and forward, and back again, was amazing (and I hope Vol. 5 takes us back to her New York part, too). Someone needs to tell me if the thing about Zoe is for real-for real, because we've totally had people come back from worse already? Jade, both young and old, continues to be the most amazing all around. I totally called the second to last page of Vol 4 and who had rigged everything we've seen and everything that needs to be done: Gold Star me.

I'm wanting more issues already, but I must wait hopefully.

4 books in and I'm still confused about the setting and what exactly is going on. The obvious assumption is the cast of children are all attending a preparation school in hell. The writing is sharp enough to keep me interested, but the cast keeps getting bigger and bigger and, while the artist has done a fine job, some characters look too similar to another and the motivations are complicated enough for most readers to keep things straight. For the newly initiated I guess the concept of the series is Battle Royale/Hunger Games meets Tower Prep. At this point I am at a loss as to who are the good guys and the bad guys. When a character is betrayed or killed, which happens often, I'm finding I don't really care because I'm not even sure if "Death" is a possibility in this disturbing setting.

This volume took the confusion to a whole new level. This volume concludes season 1 and questions were supposed to be answered, but all I got was new confusion. With the introduction of new characters things only started to get more messy. Suffice to say I didn't enjoy this volume as much as I did the previous ones.

Introduction:

After reading the previous three volumes of Nick Spencer’s “Morning Glories” series, I was surprised to find myself actually wanting to read more adventures from the Morning Glories students and I finally managed to pick up the fourth volume “Morning Glories: Truants,” which introduces the next generation of the Morning Glories students!

What is this story about?

After the events that happened in the third volume, the Morning Glory students find themselves face to face with a group of students called the “Truants” (which includes Akiko, Fortunato, Ian, Guillaume, Irina and Vanessa) who happened to be on a mission to kill the creator of Morning Glory Academy. But, will the Truants end up saving the Morning Glory students from the school itself or will they be a much bigger threat to the school and the students?

What I loved about this story:

Nick Spencer’s writing: Nick Spencer’s writing is once again full of intensity and excitement! I loved the fact that in this volume, we actually have a better background story of the teachers Georgina Darmount and Lara Hodge as I was wondering what their relationship with each other was really like and how they felt about obeying their “father” about dealing with the students. Now, even though I would have been happier to see why the school wanted these particular students and what they are going to do to them, I am glad to actually get a good background story on Lara and Georgina since I could better understand their characters. I also loved the fact that Nick Spencer introduced the Truants into this story as I was interested in seeing how they would deal with the strange and scary situations going on at Morning Glory Academy while colliding with the Morning Glory students. I also loved the little nods to Marvel Comics, such as some of the references to “X-Men” sneaking up in this story, like this little exchange:

“How do you even do that? You’re half my size. You’re a girl.”

“So sexist. It’s my special mutant power. Like Colossus!”

Joe Eisma’s artwork: Joe Eisma’s artwork is once again extremely gorgeous in this volume as the characters look truly realistic and the violent scenes are done so well. Call me a huge fan of gory violence, but I loved the way that Joe Eisma drew the gory scenes, such as people’s insides being ripped out, as they look so detailed that I was literally blown away by the horrific situation of those scenes.

What made me feel uncomfortable about this story:

Just like the previous three volumes of this series, I often had trouble keeping up with the narration of the story. As much as I like seeing the flashback sequences for the characters’ back stories, they often get in the way of telling the stories in the present day since they keep interrupting the flow of the stories. Also, for anyone who does not like strong language and gory violence, this volume has tons of gory scenes of characters having their insides ripped out and a bit of strong language such as the use of the “f” word.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, “Morning Glories Volume Four: Truants” is a great volume that “Morning Glories” fans should definitely check out! Now that Season One is done with, I cannot wait to see what will happen to these students in the future volumes!

Volume 4 of Morning Glories continues with what seems to be the series' ongoing theme of "We ain't tellin' you shit."

Okay, that is not 100% true. We do get a few answers, of sorts, in this volume (hint: time travel), but as has been the case in previous volumes, every "answer" adds three more questions. So we get a few more clues about the founding of the academy and what was going on in some scenes in earlier issues, but we are still way down the Lost rabbit hole, and I'm still not convinced there is a grand plan that will explain it all. Yet I keep reading because it's still interesting.

Volume 4, Truants, introduces a new set of six students, with their own agenda. The leader of which is Irina, a rifle-toting Ukrainian chick who has already killed off one of my favorite characters and no, a full volume later it has not been explained thank you very much. :( Of course this is one of those series where you cannot necessarily assume a character is dead and buried and out of the story just because you saw a bullet blow through their heart, but still, it looks like Nick Spencer is starting to do what he did in Walking Dead: maintain a steady supplement of new main characters to replace the ones he kills off.

So now we know a little bit more about factions and one of the sides opposing the staff of Morning Glory Academy. And another character who appeared to be a good guy turns out to be not so much. But then the jury is still out on a lot of the characters who appear to be bad guys.

Gah. I want to keep reading because the story has to be going somewhere, right?

I really enjoyed this installment in the series.

This is still ridiculously confusing but I feel like I am finally starting to get a couple of things so that was fun.

I really enjoyed the addition of the Truants to the story.

I continue to really enjoy the art, although in this installment I did struggle to differentiate between Akiko and Irina.

I really hope we start to get some more answers soon.

About 60% of the way into this volume, I just gave up. This series is too convoluted and I am not someone who can just "go with it" for FOUR VOLUMES of no (or very little) actual resolution. Also, some of the characters look the same to me. So, in a nutshell, I'm done with this series because it is no fun for me to read and makes me feel like a complete idiot. Peace out.

"Questions are answered and new mysteries emerge as Season One comes to a shocking end!" - BESH WHEREEEE?? Picking up this comic book series was a mistake ugh. It's just like The Wicked + The Divine - amazing premise but as the series moves along ... you see there was no second thought behind anything.

I am not sure how I feel. I feel like the series is just bringing up more and more things that need answers but they aren't actually supplying those questions. It seems like with each volume more questions need answers yet few of the previous questions get answered. I still really enjoy the artwork of this book and I will probably continue on with the series and finish it off. I will, likely, probably have to stop reading for a bit though and it might be a good time to take a break since I am getting a tad bit frustrated.

The (weird) story finally begins to make some sense. We learn the backstory of Lara and Georgina, Ike and Abraham, and Abraham's special kids, "the Truants." A lot more timey-whimey stuff going on.

And the body count rises. But at least the pieces are finally falling into place. Now it's just a matter of having the various story lines move on towards their conclusions.

We go from time travel to a religious twist?!?

It felt odd to read not one but two Bible stories mixed in with the plot, Nabuchadnezzar, the greatest king of Babylon and Abraham, the father of Issac. At some point I just wanted less fantasy to be inserted.

I feel like I should make a chart of the plot before I read the next volume.

Man, how can we learn so much and still not understand a thing? This is so good, giving me LOST vibes and I love it. Fills that void that I'm missing. Season One is done, moving on to Season Two. Hopefully this series continues to surprise and end on a high note.

Okay, I actually think I'm starting to notice problems with this series now. I'm noticing a lot of inconsistencies in the art style (there were a few ears that really shouldn't have been that low), and there are so many characters who are drawn very similar. There's been so many characters introduced that I'm beginning to lose track of who's who, and the plot just didn't compute with my brain. I had no idea what was going on for the first few issues in this volume, although I did enjoy the last few issues with Ike.

I'm going to give this the benefit of the doubt considering that I really enjoyed the first 3 volumes, but if it doesn't improve in the next one or two volumes I'm not sure if I'll carry it on. At this point in time there are more unresolved plot lines than resolved ones, and I have no idea where half the characters even are-

Also, the characters in this series are unlikeable. That's their thing, and I don't mind that. But a lot of them don't even have qualities that redeem them, or keep my interest in them. I really like Ike, Jade, Hunter, Akiko and Ian are good characters that I actually want to see live through this, but so many other characters have either left (with no signs of them returning anytime soon) or just plain died at the end of their character arc. Killing off characters once you're done with them isn't the best strategy, especially taking into account the sheer amount of characters involved in the story, and I'm just getting tired of all of these characters just being killed instead of actually getting good ends to their arc.

So yeah. I hope the series improves, but I'm worried. I'll put the next volume on hold for a while, just to let it rest, and it'll allow me the chance to read other graphic novels I want to read more!

I love Morning Glories I love the art, the character design, the religious references, each characters personalities, and everything else. I also hate each character as much as I love them.

For every moment that you actually like a Morning Glories character you have ten moments where you hate them and despise everything they do. For example, Irina, a character that is newly introduced in volume four, is a B.A.M.F. in every sense of the word. I love how she talks, and how she walks, how she holds a gun, and then I hate EVERYTHING she stands for.

As a reader, you cannot trust yourself or the author to help you make any sound decisions on which characters to route for. There are none. Characters I liked in volume three are terrible in volume four. Characters that I thought were no count now suddenly have more depth.

Nick Spencer is a truly accomplished writer for all the twists and turns he puts into Morning Glories. Each character is unique and interesting. But he’s a sadist. He wants to torture us all. And we are all masochists dying to be tortured with his next installment.

Joe Eisma’s art also really helps to define each character. With each facial expression with hate Ike just a bit more and want to see how far Irina can push us before we no longer like her. (She looks so cool with her held tilted to the side and that “I’ll kill you look”) He has drawn a world that while hard to believe still sucks us in.

I also can’t forget Rodin Esquejo’s covers. I wouldn’t have picked it up with a title like Morning Glories if it weren’t for his amazing and creepy covers.
