The Iron Seas #3.4

Fire & Frost

Rate this book
From the authors who brought you Wild & Steamy come three all-new tales of lovers who create their own heat, even when they’re surrounded by ice…

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims – Estrella may be going into heat, but she’s determined to remain in control. Just because she’s ovulating doesn’t mean she has to settle for just any man (or his beast). Her sexy alpha’s determined to find her a tiger to take care of her heat and father her child…but no one seems to look quite as good as the man in charge. Will giving in to her need for her alpha ruin her tenuous relationship with her clan or be a match made in heaven?

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane – The witches of the world ridiculed and rejected nerdy Veronica for trying to use newfangled computers to enhance old world spellcasting. Well, it’s 1984 now, and she’s perfected her spellcasting computer program. Hey, who needs friends when you can conjure virtually anything…or anybody? So when Veronica makes powerful new enemies, she conjures Max, a pitbull of a cop, to deal with the pesky hitmen who keep coming around. Maybe Veronica can finally get some peace and quiet so she can work on her computer. But tough-guy Max is in no mood to play lapdog to a gorgeous witch.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook – Elizabeth has spent the past five years running from her father; her father’s huntsman, Caius, has spent the past five years pursuing her. But when he finally catches up to her on an airship flying above Europe’s zombie-infested cities, Elizabeth discovers that Caius isn’t the only danger she has to fear—and now that he’s found her, Caius doesn’t intend to let her go…

Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

Together again (after Wild & Steamy) Jessica Sims(Jill Myles) & Carolyn Crane shift to their newer series for their steamy shorts while Meljean Brook offers another adventure romance quickie from the Iron Seas.

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims - A Midnight Liasons short - With her first mating heat upon her, liger shifter Estrella needs to find a suitable baby daddy and she needs to find him fast, so off to a dating agency for supernaturals and a round of speed mating... - I liked this one a lot, Estella is so wrapped up in her perceived deficiencies that she's missed out on what has been there all of the time, and this very steamy story was surprisingly cute for a story that uses going into 'heat' as a kick starter.

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane - This is the prequel short to Mr Real and tells the story of Alix's aunt and her magical machine - This story is slow to roll, but leading man Max, conjured back to life from a newspaper clipping picture, really makes it work, he is such a sigh worthy hero that he makes up for the initial prickliness of (aunt) Veronica, but his care works to solve the hedgehog dilemma (how do you hug a hedgehog?) and when Veronica finally lets herself be vulnerable, it's all good.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook - Set in the Iron Seas world, Elizabeth, who has been on the run from her father (for a very good reason), and hunter Caius, who was supposed to bring her back but failed before, are sweet together and there is a good enough set up for the past history between them to make that part of the story work. The resolution to the main conflict of the story is a bit quick, but that's not really a problem just a nit and just my greedy nature speaking - I always want more of this world.

This book also contains excerpts (at 88%) For Sims(Myles) story from Wild&Steamy, Crane's Mr Real, and Brook's upcoming stand alone short Frozen)

”Speed Mating” by Jessica Sims – 3 stars or C-
Now or never. She forced the words out of her throat. “I’m going into heat.”
The pencil snapped.

Ligers are supposed to be infertile, but going into ‘heat’ mean Estella is capable of bearing a child. She hopes with the help of her attractive, virile, and tattooed alpha that she can find a mate or good father to her possible baby.

This was a cute, yet predictable quickie story. As it’s only a three chapters, it’s not meant to be anything more than a single woman’s romp in dating with some sexual tension. (A sexy time is included.)

“Conjuring Max” by Carolyn Crane – 3.5 stars or C+ (maybe B-)
Witches thought the only wisdom worth having came out of dusty old books. Veronica knew different. She could conjure anything in the world with her bespelled code—any person, any object, anything that could be photographed or even drawn. Everything was electricity, even the human body. Even emotions and thoughts—that had been her key breakthrough in computerizing the spells.

Set in 1984, Veronica, a witch, conjures a cop named Max to protect her from the mob. Max is familiar with this specific mob. He will protect Veronica with his life. Her magic will bring him back, but will he arrive in time to save her from some very powerful witches.

I loved the characters, but was confused by the setting. This seems to be a prequel, but I haven’t read the first book in the series, which would have probably helped, as I think this short story maybe meant to shed some light on the characters. The use of magic and technology seems an odd mix. A special magical computer code for conjuring? Luckily, enough detail was given to lend plausibility without overly test one’s knowledge of computers. (I had a hard enough time managing BASIC in college.) The story of a nerdy and scarred heroine and a devoted cop hero were enjoyable for a novella.

“Wrecked” by Meljean Brook – 4 stars or B+
”But I didn’t try at all. I should have been that friend twelve years ago. I should have been that friend five years ago, when your father sent me after you. I should have been that friend two years ago, when I caught up to you. So I’m trying to be that friend now.”

Elizabeth’s father is renowned for successfully breeding wildlife endangered by the zombies. It’s been five years since she fled her seemingly privileged life. Caius, her father’s indentured servant/ huntsman, had caught her two years before and despite sharing the horrific reasons for leaving her home he was going to follow his orders. He has caught up to her again claiming he will help her. With her father in pursuit over zombie-infested lands, Elizabeth will not go down without a fight.

“Wrecked” is another wonderful novella set in Meljean Brook’s steampunk series. Loosely set in the Iron Seas world, this book can stand-alone. The repercussions of the zombie infestation add an intriguing angle. Ethical issues with scientific advancement are present. The characterizations are engaging with Elizabeth as a brave woman outwitting her pursuers. Caius is the tormented hero who had to swallow his bitter pill. This was a fun read and perfect for readers who would like a taste of steampunk romance or to try an Iron Seas sampler.

Need something to read at the beach? A light and fun book of novellas to read for summer vacation? This is a follow up anthology to Wild & Steamy.

Speed Mating - Jessica Sims - 4 stars
Speed Mating is the story of a were-liger (lion/tiger hybrid) who, despite the odds, goes into heat and needs a mate (and father of her child) pronto. Her alpha Vic is eager to assist by suggesting possible mates. Each date is a bust and as Estrella gets closer and closer to her time, she becomes desperate. Desperate enough to try speed dating where Vic is sitting in for a no-show. Estrella finds herself attracted to Vic but worries about the complications of being with him.

The "heat" part gives rise to some funny situations. Estrella is horny and desperate but she still wants a good father for her young. I especially loved the speed dating scene where Estrella and Vic had a quickie date. Nice sexual tension there. I really had a lot of fun with this one and I am now going to have to find more books by Jessica Sims to read.

Conjuring Max - Carolyn Crane - 3 stars
Conjuring Max is the background story or prequel to Carolyn Crane's Mr. Real. In this story we meet the computer savvy witch Veronica and her conjured boyfriend and bodyguard Max. While I loved Mr. Real, I had a hard time with this story. Maybe it was because Veronica was not an easy character to like. After all, everyone seemed to want her dead. What I did like is that it explained how Victoria created her computer conjuring program. It’s quite a neat concept when you think about it. Take a picture, any picture, and poof that person appears the next day. Of course, there is an expiry date, but you can always conjure him up again. In any case, don't miss Mr. Real because that story is a lot of fun to read.

Wrecked - Meljean Brook - 4 stars
Wrecked was my favorite story of this anthology, but I am a little biased. Meljean Brook's Iron Seas world has got to be one of the best steampunk worlds created. The Iron Seas is based on an alternate history of the world complete with fantastic steampunk contraptions, airships, steampunk prosthetics, nanobots, zombies, megalodons, and even a kraken. I am dying to scream out “Release the Kraken” whenever I see those in books. Part of the charm of this world is the featured couple who always have a hot and steamy romance. I loved Elizabeth and Caius and am looking forward to more stories from the Iron Seas.

Overall, an enjoyable anthology.

Thank you to Carolyn Crane for a review copy of this book.

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims (3 stars)
Humorous account on a liger's search for a suitable mate. She has a huge crush on her Alpha, Vic, but believes he isn't interested because she is a half-breed.

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane (3 stars)
Veronica can conjure anything or anyone. She has really powerful enemies, so she is in hiding. She conjured Max off a conference photo to protect her. The story starts when they are attacked by a group of witches and hitmen. Veronica would be a great villain in some other story, but since this one was partly told from her point of view, she is really a sad character.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook (4 stars)
I love Iron Seas series.
Caius catches up with Elizabeth on an airship, but he doesn't intend to give her back to her father.

MinnChica: I absolutely love and adore all things Jessica Sims/Jill Myles/Jessica Clare. I think I could read the phonebook, if she wrote it. Meljean Brook has created one of the most imaginative and incredible worlds that I’ve ever come across. Mix it in with her sexy writing and I can’t turn down anything of hers either. While I’ve only read a novella or two of Carolyn Crane, I’ve liked what I’ve read so far, and will definitely need to add her books to my ever-growing TBR stack.

Speed Mating was probably my favorite in this book. It was light hearted, sexy and an all around fun read. It was also the shortest, which made me just a teeny bit sad. I love that Sims has a way of finding ridiculous situations for her heroes and heroines, and then a humorous and sexy way of getting them out of it. Poor Estrella was looking for both a father for her child and a man who didn’t repulse her. More than anything she wanted her alpha, and I loved that she was so scared of ruining that relationship by approaching him about mating. I loved the way they finally got together, and how much they were secretly crushing on each other. I can’t say enough good things about Sims writing and just how much I love her stories.

I give Speed Mating an A

Conjuring Max was a really unique and different read. I loved the idea of using computers to enhance magic, and how Veronica was able to create a program to help her conjure up anything she wanted. It was a really cool and fun twist on magic that I haven’t seen before. For me though, there was something lacking in the romance between these two. I’m not sure what it was, but I just didn’t find that I was totally invested in the relationship between Max and Veronica. I wanted to be, but there was just a little spark missing, and it caused my interest to wane a little throughout the story.

I give Conjuring Max a B-

Wrecked was another fabulous novella to add to the Iron Seas series. As I said before, Brook has created probably the most imaginative world I’ve ever read, and I absolutely adore everything she writes within this world. I loved getting the chance to see some of the zombies up close and personal, and getting the chance to see first hand what their deal is all about. I loved the idea of having the cat and mouse game between Elizabeth and Caius be the foundation of their romance. I was rooting for them all the way and glad to see them finally find their way to one another. PS: Brook does an amazing job creating some really creepy villains as well!

I give Wrecked an A-

All in all this was another fabulous anthology from these three powerhouse authors. I love getting the chance to catch up with both the Midnight Liaisons and Iron Seas series, and I’m anxiously awaiting both of these authors to release their next books. I can only hope these three continue to write together and give us more in the future!

E: It was a great surprise to see a review request of Fire & Frost appear and since it contains two authors whose writing I absolutely adore I couldn’t wait to read it. I have found that Brook and Sims/Myles/Clare have a way of drawing me into their worlds. Crane is a new-to-me author who provided a very interesting addition to this anthology.

Speed Mating was a lot of fun to read. I found myself laughing often at the sheer incompatibility of prospects, Estrella’s combination of determination and shyness, and the uber patience of her alpha. I adored how Sims included some of the things that are used in society today to meet potential dates and played on how challenging it can be to meet someone who is interested in more than just a quick hook-up. One of the other things I enjoy about Sims’ writing is that she is always includes at least one key friendship so we get to see additional facets of her main characters. I really can’t wait to see what Sims provides for the next installment in this particular world.

I give Speed Mating an A

Conjuring Max was a very interesting take on computers, math, and magic. It brought me back to the days when I first started studying computer science and I tried to explain email and the internet to my family. Eventually I gave up and said it was magic. They were quite willing to accept that explanation so I had an immediate connection to the magic aspect that Crane used. Even with my fascination I found this novella missing a few things. I did not understand why the Council and hired assassins were trying to kill Veronica so I spend most of my time reading trying to understand that aspect. The other thing I found missing was, like MinnChica, the connection between Max and Veronica. I think I never quite grasped the romance because this was a snapshot after all of their internal conflict had been resolved so I really didn’t see the emotional attachment.

I give Conjuring Max a B-

Wrecked is another great installment in Brook’s Iron Seas world. Each story adds more to the world building and explores new aspects while retaining the familiarity of the original set-up. She explores some very fascinating issues here that aren’t completely revealed until the latter parts of the story which I thought was great. This ended up being a great game of chase with each side having information that could drastically sway the actions of the other side. I loved how both Elizabeth and Caius went to extremes to right what they saw as a serious wrong. Without giving away too much, I hope, I absolutely loved the themes of individuality and redemption that Brook wove throughout the story.

I give Wrecked an A.

Overall this was a really fun anthology to read. I hope the three ladies continue to join together for these collections. They are all skilled in creating fascinating worlds and unusual characters who inhabit them. Fire & Frost contains something for everyone from shapeshifters, to computers augmenting magic, to steampunk the variety was refreshing! I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Fire and Frost is the newest collaboration between authors Meljean Brook, Carolyn Crane and Jessica Sims. The novellas are unique and almost impossible to compare, but they do have two things in common: the charming, compelling characters and the way the “hot and cold” theme has been cleverly incorporated into each story.

In Speed Mating by Jessica Sims we meet Estrella, a mixed tiger and lion shifter (or liger) who is about to go into heat and asks her clan’s alpha to help her find a suitable male to have sex with. Hilarity ensues. Well, not hilarity exactly, but as the title suggests, this is a light, tongue-in-cheek story that’s all about having fun while still managing to sneak in an interesting and welcome take on the ubiquitous shifter romance.

Speed mating is a fun and simple story, but it’s detailed enough to form a clear image of the rules and workings of its particular world. These characters have an animal side that sometimes takes over them in ways that are both natural and inconvenient, but they also have choices and are, above all, rational humans. So ultimately Estrella can decide whether to have sex or not (even if not having it can be quite difficult), she can pick a mate, and her alpha stops himself from actively pursuing the woman he wants just because he’s in a position of power over her and doesn’t want to abuse it or make her feel forced.

It was perhaps a bit too short and rushed, especially at the end where the love declarations came out of nowhere, but I had a lot of fun with it.

3.5 Stars

Next we have Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane. Set in the 1980’s, it tells the story of Veronica, a reclusive witch who’s being chased by the mob and uses a computer to create a complex spell that allows her to conjure people from a picture. That’s how she ends up with Max, a cop who was recently murdered by the same people chasing Veronica. Her plan is to use him as a bodyguard, but things get complicated when they fall in love, even if neither is aware of the other’s feelings.

The premise is weird and slightly cheesy, but the story was surprisingly charming and even a bit sad. A nerdy witch that uses a magical computer program to bring photographs to life sounds like a weird premise, but once we see how alone this woman is, how badly the dead cop wants to live, and how much they need each other, it becomes clear that as interesting and weird the setting is, Veronica and Max are the real stars.

The romance was very emotional and heartfelt, even if it was never clear exactly why he was so in love. I had the impression that he was confusing need with love, and his emotional response to her was similar to hero-worship. Yet seeing Veronica through his eyes was enough to make me root for them.

4 Stars

Last but not least is Wrecked by Meljean Brook. Elizabeth has been running from her father for years. Caius is the huntsman in charge of bringing her home. She always liked him, but thought he hated her; he tried really hard not to like her, but thoroughly failed at it. And now they meet again under slightly different (and dangerous) circumstances. Basically, this novella is an unrequited love twofer with a touch of adventure. And I loved it.

Wrecked is a bit longer, which means that we get more insight into the character’s history. Elizabeth is a strong, kind and resourceful heroine; perhaps a bit too sweet, but never annoying. And Caius spends the whole time being emotionally vulnerable. The result is a lovely romance and a reader filled with all the feelings. All of them!

On top of that, there’s action and a disturbing villain. What keeps this from being a 5-star read is that the resolution was slightly rushed and too convenient, but other than that, it was entirely satisfying.

4 Stars

It’s unusual to find an anthology where all the novellas are equally strong, albeit for different reasons. Each story is part of a series, but they all stand alone well. I highly recommend it to everyone, but especially to fans of Paranormal Romance who are feeling bit tired of all those overbearing alpha males. You certainly won’t find one of those here.

3.5 stars

I’m starting to really like anthologies, but I’m not liking when the stories in anthologies aren’t similar. Like, if I were to judge this anthology by the first story, I’d expect this would be a paranormal romance/shifter antho. But it’s not. It does have something for everyone which may appeal to some readers, though. The first story is shifters, the second is a contemporary witch story that is set in the ‘80s, and the third story is a fabulous Steampunk. I will say, that at the $2.99 price point, it's absolutely worth it for just the Meljean Brook story.

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims-3 stars
This story was good, and I liked the hero. Estrella is a liger, and the lions don’t want her, so she’s been sticking with the tigers since they don’t seem to mind. But she has always felt like an outsider, so when she begins to ovulate, she is put in a tough situation. She has to find a mate, a potential father to her children, or risk never having kids.

The main problem is that the only tiger she wants to mate with is her alpha, who has never shown the slightest inkling of interest in her. Oh, and he keeps shoving available tiger males at her. One drunken night, she tells him what she really wants. And she finds out that he might want the same thing. . .

This was a quick and steamy story with a couple of funny scenes at the speed dating table.

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane-1.5 stars
I really didn’t care for the second story, but it seems I’m in the minority. In fact, many of my friends are really looking forward to (Mr. Real) the next in the series. I really didn’t care for the heroine, or her methods, the 80s bits were fun, but there was so much going on, it was hard to enjoy. There were several times I almost didn’t finish it.

Basically, Veronica is a super powerful witch, but she mainly uses computers, which in the ‘80s weren’t used the way they are today. Well, no one uses them like Veronica. She uses them to enhance her magic. And she can conjure anything from a picture with them.

She needs a bodyguard, so she conjures dead cop Max. I liked Max, and I liked how he could see through Veronica’s shell into the person she could be, but it was a weird story. I think if it had been purely romantic suspense, or paranormal romance minus the computers I would have liked it more? I don’t know. I just couldn’t get into it.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook-5 stars
I loved the Meljean Brook story. 5 brilliant stars. Elizabeth is on the run from her father, and her father has sent out his huntsmen to bring her back. Repeatedly. Only once before did he send out Caius, though, and Caius actually caught her! But 2 years ago, while chained to his bed so she wouldn’t escape the train ride, she got him to open up to her. Unfortunately she realized that he would turn her in no matter what.

Caius never wanted to like Elizabeth. She’s the spoiled privileged daughter of the man who’s enslaved him. But he starts to find out she’s nothing like he thought. He wanted her to be spoiled so he could justify hating her. But the truth is, he’s lusted after her, he’s been in love with her, and then on a retrieval gone wrong, he’s watched her plunge to her death from a moving train rather than go back to her father.

Only she isn’t dead.

She survived. And he’s found her. And this time? He won’t be returning her to her father.

This action-packed novella is not only a great addition to the Iron Seas series, but it’s also a fabulous romance. With zombies, Steampunkery, romance and adventure, it’s jam-packed with something for everyone!

Fire & Frost is an anthology featuring stories by three very talented writers: Jessica Sims (also known as Jill Myles), Carolyn Crane and Meljean Brook. The title made me assume that these stories would be filled with steam, and I wasn’t completely wrong, but more than anything these stories were filled with heart

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims

Speed Mating features Estrella, a shapeshifter who always thought she would not be able to mate and carry children. Well…surprise! She’s about to go into heat and needs a man. Fast. Her Alpha, Vic, is trying to help her out by finding some suitable men for her but they are all losers. And why is Vic looking so yummy lately?

This is a hot quick read. Did the ‘I love you’ come out of nowhere? A little, yes. But it worked with the story. Estrella made me giggle and her dates made me thankful for my husband lol. And Vic…YUM!

Overall, I found this to be a fun and humorous read.

3.5 stars

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane

Conjuring Max is the story of Veronica and her bodyguard Max. If you read Mr. Real than you are familiar with the name Veronica. Yes people, she is Alix’s aunt – the witch responsible for the computer that brings images to life.

There is so much emotion in this book! The story is interesting but the emotion is what really grabbed me. After reading the first story in this anthology I was expecting this one to be light and fun but instead was met by a story that made my heart break in the very best of ways. I loved Max’s devotion to Veronica and I was glad when Veronica finally got with the program and realized her feelings for Max. He is such an honorable character. Veronica is set in her ways and not a super likeable character at first but she really grows on you quickly. And the twist at the end! That opens up a whole lot of possibilities for the series.

I don’t feel you necessarily have to read Mr. Real to get what is going on in this story but I believe it would help as there are details here and there that aren’t expanded on too much but that are explained in the novel. All in all a good read that left me smiling through my tears.

3.5 stars

Wrecked by Meljean Brook

Wrecked is the story of the chased, Elizabeth, and the chasee, Caius. I had not read a book in Meljean’s Iron Seas series in a while and I almost forgot how, even though steampunk is not my favorite genre to read, the stories are absolutely top notch and that the steampunk elements aren’t the focus – the characters are.

Elizabeth’s story will make you go O-o and Caius will make you want to hug him. Elizabeth is running from her father and once upon a time Caius was the one who was hired to catch her. He broke away from her father and it now out to help Elizabeth. Both unaware of how deeply their feelings for each other run, they are confused and a bit lost but eventually things fall into place for them. Throw in zombies and airships and high-up chases and you have yourself one heck of an adventure on top of a lovely love story.

Elizabeth and Caius are fully developed and by the end of this story you feel you have known them forever. Overall I found this to be a beautiful story. Fans of Meljean’s Iron Seas books have to check this one out. Heck, fans of steampunk need to read this too because this is how the genre should be written.

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims
My weakness for sexy Alpha male shapeshifters reared its ugly head... well, actually, it wasn't so ugly. Let me try this again...

This story was packed with all the things that I adore about paranormal shapeshifter romances. A hot Alpha who is determined to do the right thing even though it's kinda killing him on the inside? CHECK. A strong, opinionated female who can hold her own against the men in the pack? CHECK. A heat cycle that comes as a MOST inconvenient time? CHECK.

Estrella's loneliness despite being part of a pack came through loud and clear. Her dual heritage makes her a tolerated outcast but she's wary about forming bonds. And I get that. As Alpha, Vic doesn't want to push himself on an unwilling female - *thumbs up* to that, dude! - so he hides his attraction to her. In fact, he does his best to make sure that she's taken care of by bringing in some (douchey) out-of-the-area shifters to see if any of them are compatible. Oh, and the whole "Janitor as a last name" thing that one of the guys had going for him kinda made me giggle madly.

Sexy with likeable characters and amusing situations. *thumbs up*

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane
Part of me had a hard time getting into this story but I'm still thinking about it after I've finished the book so... I think this is one of those stories that has hidden depths.

My biggest issue was that I had a hard time connecting with Veronica. This was more because she didn't seem to have an understanding about *why* conjuring someone for a few days of fun wasn't entirely ... ethical. Or, not ethical but skeevy. She's pulling people out of a frozen moment in time and using them to fill the lonely places inside her. Okay, maybe she did eventually reach the point where it began to sink in that what she was doing wasn't quite right but she was very blase about throwing her power around for a while.

All can say is that I'm still thinking about this one. The fix to the problems Veronica and Max were facing opened up a whole world of possibilities and I'm incredibly intrigued by the potential there.

Dangit, Carolyn Crane, I think you broke my brain. Well played.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook
Oh, Meljean Brook, I always lament that I haven't caught up entirely on this series when I read one of your stories and/or books. I MUST REMEDY THIS. Because zombies mixed with scary nanites mixed with AWESOME characters make me all weak in the knees. And the worldbuilding... *swoon* There's just SO MUCH going on in this world that it's VERY easy to get sucked into it. Which is fantastic.

This story packs a wallop. No joke. It gives you a fairly pointed overview of the zombie badness while keeping you engaged with the characters and their issues. Those issues, by the by, aren't little. Elizabeth and Caius are dealing with a morally reprehensible plot, matters of trust, and being brave enough to bare their souls to one another and admit that *maybe* there might be something more than dislike between them. Something like HAWT SEX. Steampunk sexiness... I just love that.

Seriously, I'm going to get caught up on this series. It's too fun for me to put off any longer.

Speed Mating - I don't read many shifter books (why is that I wonder?) so this was a fun diversion. I liked the dancing around Estrella and Vic did, each trying to avoid the obvious! Vic is a sexy, growly alpha tiger, yum!

Conjuring Max - I liked Carolyn Crane's first Code of Shadows novel, Mr. Real and this is the story of Alix's aunt Veronica who invented the witchcraft combined with technology that conjures items from pictures into real life. Max and Veronica's story had an ephemeral quality and I was pretty tense at the end wondering if their story would be happy or bittersweet.

Wrecked - Meljean Brook's Iron Seas novels and novellas can do no wrong in my book. This was an exciting adventure with snowstorms, airship balloon crashes and ravenous zombies; I loved Caius and Elizabeth's story. The loving is so sweet as the two work through their childhood bitterness to discover their true feelings for each other.

How we got this book: eARC from authors

*Blurb from Goodreads*

So, after reading the Burning Up anthology yesterday, I searched for Meljean Brook's other books and came upon this anthology. I love her story here, too, "Wrecked". I think I gotta get my hands on her Iron Seas series. Really such an emotional story with a most unusual twist. And the "second chance" trope is one I like, especially when it doesn't come with The Big Misunderstanding. So happy.

Jessica Sims is a new-to-me author. I have two or three books of her books in my TBR list. They have quirky titles (Beauty Dates the Beast, Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter, Must Love Fangs) so I expected her writing to be light-hearted, maybe a humorous take on being furry, lightly poking fun at shifters' quirks; something like MaryJanice Davidson's Wyndham Werewolves series, perhaps. But it wasn't. It was quite mainstream (not a criticism -- I don't like Davidson's series) and fairly serious.

I wished Vic had been more open in his feelings for Estrella and I really wanted his POV too, not just hers. Really, he hardly showed her in any way that he wanted her. Sure, he's the alpha and he would have to be careful not to make her feel like she had to reciprocate his interest (tricky, being in a position of authority), but he could have... not scowled at her every time she talked to him? She had issues of belonging due to being hybrid lion-tiger, always feeling unwanted and like she never fit in anywhere. It doesn't sound like he ever reassured her about it and in the story, even after he does reassure her of her position in the clan, she doesn't tell him her feelings and fears. I didn't like that. I don't like the way they eventually got together and that neither of them had the courage to tell the other what they were thinking. It was frustrating.

Finally, we've got Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane, another new-to-me author. I really, really liked this one. With nine chapters, it was lots more developed than the Jessica Sims story (a mere three chapters). The plot was built around an intriguing idea combining witchy powers with computer technology, very unique. I loved the dual POV from both Veronica and Max (in third person) and the satisfying ending -- not just to the romance, but also to the question of her specific "god-like" powers and her insecurities and fears. I'm a sucker for wounded heroes or heroines who find emotional healing along the way with the help of the one who loves them. I'd never heard of Carolyn Crane prior to this, but now will check out her other work. That's why I love anthologies. They give me just enough to sink my teeth into, but not enough to keep me up till 3am reading; and introduce me to fantastic new authors!

Solid 4* for the overall anthology. I enjoyed it very much!

Speed Mating (Midnight Liaisons 02.3) Jessica Sims read 03/30/19 4*
Estrella and Vic's lightning bolt mating. For a short read, it was just right. I enjoyed these to MCs together very much. If you're like me and enjoy the mating heat trope...this has everything you'd need. Hot, quick, thrilling, and unpredictable, just like a bolt of lightning.

Conjuring Max (Code of Shadows 0.5) Carolyn Crane read 04/01/19 4*
To be honest, it took a few chapters to get into any connection with Veronica or Max. They felt flat and cold to me, which is sometimes typical of short stories. The promise of a computerized magical world kept me reading. Midway is when all the real reading magic begins and I was IN!
Good job, dear author. Full-fleshed out, no pun intended, Veronica and Max left me all warm and satisfied. If I ever can find a copy of book one, Veronica's niece Alix's story, that isn't listed for over $100 (no April fools, Amazon secondary mmkt!) I'll def read it LOL

Wrecked (Iron Seas 03.4) Meljean Brook read 04/02/19 4* Elizabeth and Caius breathed life into this beloved series. I'm ready for the Kraken King!!

Speed Mating 3.5 stars
Estrella and Vic
She's a liger he's a tiger and her Alpha. Going in Heat within the week Estrella needs a Tiger baby-daddy quick. Trouble is the only guy she has any interest in is her Alpha and totally out of bounds. Very cute, very short story. I'll be reading more from this author

Conjuring Max 3 stars
Veronica and Max
She's a witch that figured out with the help of several super computers how to conjure anything from a photograph. So when she needed protection she found the best, Max, a cop that died in the line of duty.

Wrecked 2.5 stars
Elizabeth and Caius
She has been running from her father for a decade, he has been her father's hunter. When Caius finally catches up to Elizabeth for the second time things really get interesting because her father is hunting and not far behind. Very slow and very steam-punk.

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims
Midnight Liaisons series

Estrella is an anomaly in her pack--she is a liger: half tiger, half lion. While she doesn't really fit in with her tiger pack, she is not accepted at all by the lion pack. Estrella had always been told she was sterile, and she believed that right up until she realized that she was going into heat. Now with only a week's notice, she needs to find someone she likes to service her needs and be the father of her child.

The one man she truly desires is her alpha, Vic. But since she thinks he could never be interested, she goes through the motions of dating and looking for a mate.

Speed Mating is a fun and sexy little story. There is a bit of humor and light-heartedness throughout the novella. I liked that the story stayed in Estrella's POV for the duration of the tale because it elevated the tension without knowing Vic’s true feelings. The pair are a joy to watch as they come together.

Bottom line: Cute, sexy shifter story. Lots of fun.
4 stars.

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane
Code of Shadows 0.5

Readers of Ms. Crane’s first release in this series, Mr. Real, will recognize Vicky as Alix’s Great Aunt who left Alix all of her worldly possessions - including a computer program that brings to life objects from photos. One need not have read Mr. Real to enjoy this novella.

Vicky is in danger and in hiding from crime syndicate boss, Salvo. She’s used her knowledge of witchcraft and computer programing to bring to life Max, former Chicago police officer recently killed in the line of duty, to be her bodyguard.

The story opens about three months after Vicky first conjured Max. I liked that Max knows he's been conjured from a photo (and the “real” Max is dead). Max is more human that most as he contemplates life, the existence of a soul, falls in love with Vicky, and learns to let go of the daughter he orphaned after his murder.

The opening of the novella is very exciting. We have no idea why Salvo is after Vicky, only that he is relentless in his pursuit. The action is suspensefully written, keeping this reader glued to the pages. In addition, the book has a heart and tackles powerful emotions. The concepts of life, death and love are wonderfully interwoven into the thrilling tale.

The story switches POV between Vicky and Max. We learn of their mutual yet secret desire and admiration for the other. I loved how Vicky pushes Max and how Max teaches Vicky to learn to let go. As the story progresses you learn how perfectly matched the pair is. It's lovely to see the give and take between the individuals.

Bottom line: Exciting action with heart. As a fan of Mr. Real, I enjoyed “history lesson” about how the computer codes came to be.
4 stars

Wrecked by Meljean Brook
Iron Seas series

Five years ago, Elizabeth Jannsen ran from her powerful father, who subsequently sent highly-trained hunters to collect her and bring her home. Caius Trachter was the only one to ever capture her, but she was able to make a dangerous escape. (2 years prior to the start of this story.)

Now Elizabeth's father has caught up to her, and she must make a quick exit. Little does she know that Caius is watching, nor does she know that he has loved her since the day he met her.

I must share with you that I am completely in awe of Ms. Brook’s storytelling and of the tales she spins. She is simply a master at her craft. Wrecked is no exception, further cementing the Iron Seas series as one of the Top 5 series among the current romance genre.

Elizabeth has every reason to run from her father, and when you find out why, I imagine your jaw will drop just like mine. Knowing that she has little chance to escape Caius, Elizabeth makes the decision to trust the man that once tried to turn her in. The pain and heartache, loneliness and internal torment of both Elizabeth and Caius is portrayed with an absolute care for detail. Elizabeth loves her father, but he is a madman and she cannot see a way out of her situation without someone's death. She wants to trust and believe Caius, but she isn't certain how. This creates emotional conflict and amazing tension. The emotional depth of the novella is on par with a story two to three times its length.

In addition, the details of the ship, voyage and world are wonderfully woven into the tale. The action--hunt and chase--are thrilling and suspenseful.

The story reaches beyond the two primary characters without stretching thin the plot of and time allotted to the primary tale. For example, I adore Captain Harker who is the captain of the ship on which Elizabeth attempts her escape. He is a supporting character with a ton of integrity. His actions give Elizabeth the ability to trust another human. It is endearing how he cares for her in his own polite way.

The ending of the story was “perfect” for the situation and again brought forward an array of emotions, but this time a bit different from the earlier scenes. It was a touching, albeit simple, way to wrap up the tale... perfect.

I absolutely loved this novella. *sigh* I cannot say enough about how great the Iron Seas series is. This novella is a stand alone and can be enjoyed by all. It is a sweet romance, suspenseful action, exquisite steampunk world and all around wonderful story.

Bottom line: Amazing adventure full of rich detail and complex storytelling that will blow you away.
5 stars

Overall, Fire & Frost offers three wonderful tales, each very different, but all exciting, romantic and fun!

Title: Speed Mating
Author: Jessica Sims
My Rating: A
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Main Characters: Estrella and Vic
Sexual Intensity: spicy

My Review:

Such a great story. I loved Estrella and the difficulties she faces as a female liger (mix of lion and tiger). As a shifter, she's an oddity for her mixed breed. As a woman, she's odd because she's a really tall woman. The book was so good because, even though she's a shifter, Estrella is so human and real. As a reader, you can totally empathize with everything she is feeling. But I love who she ends up with in her heat-- definitely a perfect mate for her.

The entire novella was really well-done. Lots of sexual heat and suspense as to what Estrella's going to do. I love shifter stories and this one was great.

Title: Conjuring Max
Author: Carolyn Crane
My Rating: B+
Genre: Sci Fi Romance
Main Characters: Veronica and Max
Sexual Intensity: hot

My Review:

This book reminded me so much of that 80's movie Weird Science, but with a super-fun romantic twist. Veronica is sure the future for witchcraft is in computers and as such, she has learned to conjure people out of magazine and newspaper clippings simply through the power of her computer system. She's used this to conjure Max, a cop who died a few weeks ago, because she needs a bodyguard.

Veronica isn't the most socially adept person and when she first starts doing this, doesn't really think about the repercussions of reanimating people. Max, on the other hand, is really not so sure that this is all that great of an idea, although he really doesn't like the idea of dying either. Over their weeks together, they begin to learn more about each other and form a true relationship.

It was an interesting novella...lots of thought-provoking issues were raised in the midst of everything 80's. LOL...wow, talk about taking a walk through history. I was a child of the 80's and this story was fun just for all those little things about that decade that I've forgotten. It was a fun read.

Title: Wrecked
Author: Meljean Brook
My Rating: A+
Genre: Steampunk Romance
Main Characters: Elizabeth and Caius
Sexual Intensity: hot

My Review:
There are two genres within romance that I do not read: historical and steampunk. So I went into this anthology knowing that this would be my least favorite story in the group. In fact, I had already given myself permission to DNF this one. OMG, was I wrong!!

This was absolutely my favorite story in the antho (but all three were truly amazing).

The thing that made this story so freaking good were the amazing characters, Elizabeth and Caius. They have such a long, sad history filled with so much emotion. Two lost and tortured souls who should have been the best of friends, but instead were enemies for so many years. Until Caius thought he lost her. I loved him, I loved her. I loved what Caius was willing to give up to save her. So sweet and heartbreaking and romantic.

The story is set within a dystopian steampunk world...I loved this world and definitely plan to read more of Meljean Brook's books just because I'm fascinated. It was an interesting dichotomy and twist on both those aspects.

Seriously, so much emotion. Really an amazing story AND I liked both the steampunk & zombie aspects of the story, too. Who knew?!?

I enjoyed this anthology with stories from Jessica Sims, Carolyn Crane, and Meljean Brook. It's kind of a continuation from Wild and Steamy which also contained stories/novellas from these 3 authors, but that is all the continuity - the stories/series aren't necessarily the same. Here are my thoughts on the stories...

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims~ The concept here is really lame for me. A female shapeshifter (liger - half lion, half tiger) is going into heat and doesn't have a guy in mind to father her baby. So she appeals for help to her alpha and goes through some "speed dating" type exercises trying to find a mate. I will also say I really did not enjoy this author's story in the previous anthology; in both cases the paranormal aspect seems to be a flimsy way to set up a story about sex. However, all that being said, I will say I enjoyed this story more than the last one, and more than I expected to. I found Ria a little annoying with her utter lack of self confidence, but some of the humor was pretty good. And if you go into it expecting some typical paranormal romance set up and some sex, you wouldn't be disappointed. 2.5 of 5 stars (the .5 is for surprising me!).

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane~ This was quite in line with the book that it is the prequel to, Mr. Real, and I enjoyed it about as much as I enjoyed that. Which is to say - it's not my favorite series of Crane's, more madcap humor and frank sex, than noir psychological fantasy and twisty plotting (which IS my favorite of hers, the Disillusionists series). This is the story of Aunt Veronica and Max, the cop she conjures to protect her, years before the events of Mr. Real. I did enjoy getting that little backstory since that is a series I am reading. 3 of 5 stars.

Wrecked by Meljean Brook~ Of course, my expectations for this novella were incredibly steep. One of my all-time favorite novellas, is Here There Be Monsters which is the novella from the Iron Seas world that Brook contributed to another anthology, Burning Up (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/70...). So while I really enjoyed this story, it fell just a little bit short of that standard. This is the story of Elizabeth, who's on the run from her father and his huntsmen, one of whom is Caius, who is searching for her for his own reasons. As always, Brook delivers on the intense connection and strong backstory, as well as an inspiring heroine. I'd give this story 4 of 5 stars.

Speed Mating (Midnight Liaisons) by Jessica Sims

I have always enjoyed Jessica Sims (Jill Myles) stories. Always fun and sexy with the perfect amount of humor to keep you chuckling as the hero and heroine find themselves in crazy, outrageous situations on their journey to their happily ever after. Speed Mating is a cute, short, lighthearted PNR about a female liger-Estrella- who goes into heat and finds herself at loose ends. She doesn’t want to just sleep with anyone. She wants romance, passion, and a mate that compliments her in every way. Her alpha, Vic, tries to help by bringing in eligible males for her to choose from but Estrella and Estrella’s liger only seem to want what they can’t have…Vic, himself.

“I didn’t say your name was a good name. It’s simply tolerable because it’s yours.”

RATING: B

Conjuring Max (Code Of Shadows 0.5) by Carolyn Crane

As always, Carolyn Crane likes to take a unique approach with her characters and storylines. Though this one didn’t engage me romantically as much as I would have liked, I found that the chemistry was lacking, Conjuring Max was still an entertaining short read that offers an interesting look at witchcraft and the modern world. Veronica was mocked as a child for her work with computer and spell casting. Now a recluse with a huge chip on her shoulder, Veronica has perfected her computers, enabling her to conjure anything she wants. When she conjures up Max to be her bodyguard against those who seek to harm her, she finds herself willing to do anything to keep Max around forever.

RATING: C

Wrecked (Iron Seas) by Meljean Brook

I absolutely adore Meljean Brook Iron Seas series. A series that crosses boundaries and transports this reader into a thrilling inventive world that just keeps getting better with every new installment. Fabulous characters combined with a full bodied complex storyline made this my favorite novella in this anthology. In Wrecked we meet Elizabeth who has been on the run from her father and his hunters for over 5 years. Her reasons for running are more than justified, as she proves when her father’s favorite hunter, Caius, found her the first time 2 years ago. Caius was devastated the first time he lost Elizabeth and now seeks to prove to her that he is not there to take her home, but to help her and hopefully build a life with her.

“I know you, Elizabeth. You. Not who someone wants you to be, but who you are.”

RATING: A

All in all, Fire & Frost is an enjoyable anthology that gives fans of these three powerhouses a little bit of everything.

I rarely like all the books in an anthology but with Fire & Frost I really enjoyed each one and am hard pressed to say which one would be my favourite. It introduced me to two authors I haven't read before, Jessica Sims and Meljean Brook and one author that I already love, Carolyn Crane, which means that my unfortunate TBR mountain is going to have a few more titles perched on it!

This anthology had a little bit for everyone, if you like a sexy and lighthearted paranormal romance, than Jessica Sims story Speed Mating is great, it was funny and sexy and although you know what is going to happen from the start I still had a lot of fun reading it. If you fancy some magic and a little mayhem Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane will be the story for you, as well as having some magical skirmishes, it has a really touching romance between the main two characters and this really managed to cram in a lot of emotion in such a small amount of pages. Also if you have read Mr. Real (which, I highly recommend you do!) then you will recognise the characters of Max and Veronica.

The last novella and the longest in this anthology was Wrecked by Meljean Brook and is part of her Iron Sea series, which I am now desperate to read. If I had to pick, I would say this was probably my favourite in this anthology; I found the world created by Meljean Brook was really interesting and something I can't wait to read more about and I also really loved the romance. It was sweet yet full of sexual tension and I was desperate for these two unhappy characters to finally find their HEAs with one another.

I really enjoyed Fire & Frost it is definitely one of the best anthologies I have read and I recommend any fan of romance to give it a go.

Probably more like 3.5.

All of these authors were new to me and though my guess is I"m missing some connections, overall, they were fine to read without prior knowledge.

Jessica Sims - 4 stars - This is why I bought the collection. I'd been playing around with a similar idea in my head, so I was excited to see the premise existed! This was too short for me to really get into the relationship, but it was HOT. And it seems like there might be some nice male/female dynamics in this world. I have the 2 book in the series checked out and I'll hopefully I'll get the chance to read them.

Carolyn Crane - 3.5 stars - I haven't heard of this author before! I think there was probably too much going on for a novella, but I liked that the moral implications of the main character's actions were touched on. Again, this was too short for me to REALLY get into the relationship, but I liked it. There was also a real sense of time (it's set in the 80's). Some stuff was left unresolved, but it seems this is the beginning of the series, so presumably it'll be picked up on. The excerpt at the back of the book suggests that it will.

Meljean Brook - 3 stars - So I've heard a lot of good about this author, but her premises just don't interest me. I don't think I've read enough steampunk to dismiss the entire genre, but I'm not drawn to it and maybe this is a case of reality meeting my expectations, but the steampunk stories I've read haven't interested me much. This was another case of maybe too much plot for a novella and (this was true for the Crane story, too), I think things were resolved a bit too neatly.

Note: My Review is solely for “Speed Mating” by Jessica Sims.

My Review:

Estrella, a liger, is going into heat and she needs to find a man ASAP. But she’s got a problem. Being a mixed breed leaves her on the outs as the lions don’t want anything to do with her and the tigers are wary of her as well.

Still, she goes to the tigers’ alpha male, Vic, and asks for his help. The attraction she feels for Vic is palpable, and she hopes he steps up to the plate to relieve her, but she has no such luck.

Vic sets her up on several dates and they all end badly. As time runs out, Estrella is becoming desperate. They try Midnight Liaisons as a last resort, but one of Estrella’s dates bails. Vic steps in so the night won’t be a total loss and Estrella wonders if she should make a move on the alpha male. Will Estrella ever find her man?

~~~~~~~~
“Speed Mating” is another great read and addition to the Midnight Liaisons Series by Jessica Sims (JS). It’s filled with lots of humorous moments as well as scorching hottt moments guaranteed to burn your socks off.
My only complaint was that JS had stated in book two that while shifters interbreed, the blood calls to only one animal and there is never a mixture of breeds. So it came as a surprise that Estrella was a liger. Still, I could totally look past this and enjoy the book. The sexual tension is done perfectly. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
“Speed Mating” features:
shifters
alpha male
paranormal romance
erotic themes
oral sex
humor
sexual tension
Enjoyed "Speed Mating" well enough. It's so short, hard to be more than OK, really. Had some minor annoyances, but I was engaged anyway. 2.5 stars
Couldn't even get into, let alone finish, "Conjuring Max" by Carolyn Crane. I've probably given up on a story faster than I did this one, but I can't think of which story that might have been. If you want to capture my attention, don't make the opening sentences read like a list of actions. Ugh. DNF
Really liked "Wrecked", and I was pleasantly surprised to feel that way. "Iron Duke" was great, as was "The Blushing Bounder" but for some reason I just have not been able to get into "Heart of Steel." I have tried and tried and tried, but I think I'm only about 5 pages in. So anyway, my point is that I went into this one with the expectation that I would have trouble with it. Happily, that wasn't the case at all, and "Wrecked" proved to be my favorite--by far--of the three stories in this collection. Elizabeth & Caius were instantly likable. Elizabeth's sudden change of heart was a bit of a bump, but hey, short story, things have to happen fast, I get it. Also, the reason Elizabeth is on the run is easily guessed and, uh, skeevy. 4 stars.
This review and rating is for Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane only.
I absolutely loved this novella by Carolyn Crane that is set in her Code of Shadows series. It’s a prequel to Mr. Real, which I really enjoyed, that gives us a glimpse as to how Veronica, Alix’ aunt, figured out how to conjure people and things with a picture and a computer. I still think that it’d be awesome to be able to do that even after reading about all the trouble Alix got herself into.
There were so many great laugh out loud moments in this novella. Most of them had to do with the 80s since that’s when the story takes place. I love a good 80s reference and by far my favorite in this story was something that Veronica said to Max after she glamoured him to look like someone out of Duran Duran.
“Any more lip out of you and you’ll find yourself staring at Boy George in the mirror.”
There were a lot of moments in this story that tugged at the heart strings too. The feelings that Max and Veronica had for each other and how they both were lonely even though they had each other. I just wanted to wrap them both up in a giant hug. There was also a ton of action in this story too, with mob hit men and crazy council witches. Even though it was just a novella, I felt like I had read a complete and awesome story.
Speed Mating by Jessica Sims – This was really cute and funny. I enjoy Jessica Sims/Jill Myles' sense of humor. This story takes place in her Midnight Liaisons world, but it stands alone just fine. I smiled the whole time I was reading and only said "Would you just TALK to each other" only once!
Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane – This was intellectually interesting, but just an ok read for me. Goodreads shows this as a prequel in her Code of Shadows world.
Wrecked by Meljean Brook – This one just barely edged out Speed Mating as my favorite entry in the book. It's listed as Iron Seas books 3.4. I think I've read almost all of them, and loved every one, so it was no surprise that I enjoyed Elizabeth and Caius' story. I think Meljean Brook does steampunk better than anyone else. Reading a story by her is just delightful. Elizabeth is a strong female character who has managed to outwit and out run Caius and other hunters for years. The story is packed with adventure, too.
I recommend this book. Another quality anthology put out by Sims, Crane, and Brook. (Wild and Steamy was another set of novellas they released. Also really good.)
Fire and Frost begins with Speed Mating by Jessica Sims, a new-to-me author. I enjoyed this short piece about a female lyger (lion/tiger) shifter about to into heat. She goes to her sexy alpha for advice and decides to look for a mate/father for her cub through speed dating. What I liked the most about this interesting world-building with shifters is that the female can choose her mate. Yes... she has a choice! The story is hot and sexy too.
Then we have Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane, a story set in the world of her Mr. Real series. This story works as a bit of a prequel and gives the reader an idea of how it all begins. I liked both characters, Max and Veronica, and the way magic and technology is integrated in a not-too-distant past. I really like how it ended.
Set in her Iron Seas world, my favorite piece in this three piece collection is Wrecked by Meljean Brook. Brook manages to add to her world-building by introducing new intriguing characters and interesting usage of the machines developed by the Horde, and still manages to satisfactorily develop a believable romance with a happily ever after.
Overall a B- grade from me.
Speed Mating, Jessica Sims
I'm not a huge fan of shifter books, but the premise of this one was funny and the characters were likable, so I enjoyed it.
Conjuring Max, Carolyn Crane
This was really interesting. I really liked Max. Veronica was a bit harder to warm up to, but I still liked them as a couple. The time dithering thing at the end confused the hell out of me though. I had to read it about four times before I finally think I got what was going on.
Wrecked, Meljean Brook
I enjoyed this, like I have the others in this series, but it wasn't my favorite. It somehow didn't seem as "steampunky" as the rest of the series. I just didn't get the same feeling of atmosphere that I usually do from these books. Also I thought the span of time covered in the story was just a little too short to convince me of Elizabeth and Caius's feelings, especially since he had been cruel to her for so long. I still liked it though, and I enjoyed the brief at the end.
Speed Mating by Jessica Sims: 3 stars
Enjoyable, but the heroine makes a stupid move to get the hero, which I found annoying.
Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane: 5 stars
My favorite of the three stories. Original and character-driven. Max is a dead cop (loved Max!) who's conjured to help a witch survive some bad guys. Witch has some major issues that Max, with love and patience, helps her through. Also, a neato carnivorous creature. I will definitely be re-reading this one. Probably multiple times.
Wrecked by Meljean Brook: 4 stars
If you've read Brook before, you'll know what to expect. Romance set amidst airships, zombies, and bad guys. Heroine was meh. Hero was hot.
Great summer book if you want something entertaining but not too involved.
Speed Mating / Jessica Sims - 1.5 stars.
Dumb. The premise had potential, but was marred by ... inept plotting? It's pretty standard for this author to have kinda dumb heroines who humiliate themselves through stupid choices and then get rescued by the smart and strong heroes, so maybe what seems like ineptness is actually the goal. IDK. I used to be more ok with her writing, but at this point her shtick makes me stabby.
Conjuring Max / Carolyn Crane - 4 stars.
Interesting world building, a cranky-protective hero and a prickly-smart heroine. Enjoyed it enough that I'm planning to try the next in the series.
Wrecked by Meljean Brook - 3.5 stars.
Enjoyed it, but something (the pacing of the romance?) didn't fully work for me. I have pretty high expectations for this series though.
First up was the novella that turned out to be my fav. Speed Mating by Jessica Sims (but then I do love Jill Myles' work :)
The story was sexy, fun and worked so well just as a novella. But I of course want more by Jessica Sims now.
Conjuring Max was the story I did not really care for. It had it's moments, but it felt like it would have worked better as a book. I felt a bit confused at times.
The last story was a story of the Iron Seas, I miss that series now, even if nothing compared to book 1. Even if this novella was good, I also felt here that it would have worked better as a book. But then I am not a fan of novellas in the end.
What did I learn. I need to read Jessica Sims and I miss the Iron seas series. I mean stuff is happening, more please.
