#54 "Rise and shine. Forever." Poor Matt. He just wanted to sleep in a larger room then his bedroom. All he wanted was a little more space. But he should have listened to his mother and not falling asleep in the guest room. Now he's trapped in a new nightmare every time he wakes up!
Matt is fed up with his tiny bedroom, but he’s Mum would let him move into the larger guest room. He decides to sneak into the room anyway, but the next day Matt finds that things have changed and not for the better...
This is a really fun entry in the series, as every time Matt goes to sleep, he swaps bodies. It’s very Quantum Leap!
Even though the conclusion felt a little silly, it kinda worked.

I’m doing a full series reread and I remember this one scaring the crap out of me as a kid. Waking up every day not knowing who or what you would be, including your family? It’s a no from me dawg.
Don’t Go To Sleep, follows Matt, a seventh grader. He hates his life. His siblings always pick on him and his mother is never home due to working two jobs. He has no one on his side, poor kid. He hates his small room and tries to convince his mother to let him trade rooms with the guest room since it’s bigger than his and loses. Later that night after everyone goes to bed, Matt decides he will go sleep in there for the night but when he wakes up the next day his life completely changes.
What I thought of this book as a kid : I remember looking on eBay as a kid and seeing this cover and being excited to read it.I eventually got a copy from a friend and read it and admittedly I was torn.I did have fun with the book ,but not as much fun as I should've.The cover I remember being kind of a little disappointed that this scene doesn't happen in the book but I still liked it regardless.I also got my mom of all people to read this book and she claims still to this day it's her favorite. So this book will always be a little special to me.
Plot: The story begins with Matt in his room being hit in the head with one of his sci-fi action figures and complaining about how small his room is.Matts dad passed away and his mom is raising him and two siblings Greg and Pam.Greg and Pam constantly make fun of Matt calling him a geek and talking about his obsession with nerdy stuff.Matt really wants some change so he asks his mom can he sleep in the guest bedroom she of course refuses but one night he sneaks off anyway and this is where his trouble begin. He wakes up the next morning and is shocked to discover he's aged four years he's like 16 now and is in high school. But he still has the mind of a 12 year old.He also has to deal with a bully that is chasing after him saying he did something the day prior. He goes to sleep agian and this time wakes up to discover his parents are completed different people along with a cat instead of a dog. This scenario is also where we are introduced to Lacie a girl who appears in all of these scenarios from this moment forward. The next time Matt goes to sleep he wakes up in a part of a circus family, complete with having to go tame a lion.He goes to sleep agian and wakes up as an old man but this is like a half a chapter so he goes back to sleep and wakes up as something else that I actually remembered the most as a kid.He gets caught in a net in this form by the men in black and turned back to normal and all is explained. He turns into a few other things, two of them felt like they didn't really belong but were still fun.
What I thought about this book as an adult: I honestly loved this book way more as an adult then I did as a kid.I remember being bummed out about not having the scene from the cover play out, but this was really fun.I loved the scenes of Matt just changing into different people or things and one of those things he changed into has to be some of the most engaging writing Stine has ever written.I also loved the fact that this had a strong mom ,even though she blames him for a lot of stuff. It was still cute.I give Don't Go To Sleep a four out of five stars. The only negatives I had were some of the realities didn't hit the greatest like Matt being chubby and the squirrel change, I was kinda torn on, otherwise this was really fun,I recommend.
Hmmmm. About the book. I thought it would be a little SCARY but it wasn't. It's a thriller but it wasn't that thrilling. A boy named Matt who used to live in a family of 4, had a cupboard size room. He wanted a big room so he shifts in the guest room and that's when the trouble begun. He gets trapped in the worst nightmare. I don't know why but I expected it to be haunting or maybe a little scary and it wasn't. Some parts will make you feel bad/sorry/upset/sad for Matt. That's it. I could only speak this much without giving much spoilers. And one nore thing this is just how I feel about the book. You should give it a read and then only come to any conclusion.
Definitely more on par with a thriller than spooky horror, DON'T GO TO SLEEP would be a good story to share with any middle grade reader who is complaining about not having the beardom in the house they want. I remember my brother and I were constantly rotating in and out of 1 of 3 different rooms in the house and so this story hit me right in the nostalgia gut.
Read the series when I was a kid. Loved them so much! They are the perfect type of scary to read when your young. Then I ReRead the whole series to my son. And he loved them as much as I did.
This one is actually pretty good. It has more humor in it than scares, but it's a fun goosebumps book with a unique idea (as compared to some of the other books, anyway) and it touches more on the Sci-Fi aspect of fiction rather than horror or suspense. It's a fun adventure, and the ending was very well done, unlike some of the last few in the series. It was a bit predictable, but by this point, they almost always are. The one thing that felt a little flat to me this time around, were the characters. The characters didn't seem to have a lot of personality that set them apart to me, from other G.B. characters. We have a 12-year-old-boy named Matt who's older brother and sister torture him, make fun of him, and are total jerks (big surprise). The characters just feel kind of one-dimensional to me, and I don't care about them as much as other characters in the series. Overall, this one is pretty good, but not quite one of the best in the series. 3.5 / 5 stars
Matt is tired of his tiny bedroom. He can barely move around with all of his stuff. So one night he decides to sleep in the guest bedroom.
The only problem is that when he wakes up, everything is different.
Don't Go To Sleep had a really cool concept that I liked. The changes that happened every time Matt fell asleep got pretty interesting.
While the story was a little repetitive the one thing I disliked the most was the cover. The cover art was good but it didn't properly represent the story.
Since I haven't read this one back in the day I was expecting more of a creature feature story from the cover.
Goosebumps - Don't Go to Sleep! Is a unique horror about a boy whose reality changes every time he sleeps. The horror is in not knowing what the next day will be and can he stop it. Sometimes he wakes as older, sometimes as younger, sometimes as an animal, and once as a monster. The premise for this story is great and Stine has a lot of fun with it. The story heads in a weird direction with reality cops that are teenagers I could have gone without but they did add a ticking clock to the story. The pace is pretty good the setup took a little too long but it was pretty good compared to the the 50 other Goosebumps I've read. The ending was a little exciting. The final twist worked well with the story you could see it going that way and was delivered decently. The horror of the story was not knowing what was going on which was written well. Don't Go to Sleep! Is Goosebumps book 54 in the original series order? Don't Go to Sleep! Was first published on April 1, 1997.
Plot Summary: Matt lives in the smallest room in the house as he is tormented by his 2 older siblings, and his mom works too much to notice. He has been begging his mom to switch to the guest bedroom but she has said no. Matt needs piece after being tormented by everyone even the dog so he decides to sleep in the guest bedroom piece when he wakes up he feels taller and his older siblings are shorter and look younger. Matt finds out that he has somehow switched ages with his siblings and no one notices. His first day of High school is rough and wants everything to go back to normal, but when wakes up again he does not even have the same family. Can Matt find a back to his original family? Or is he stuck living a different reality each day?
What I Liked: The creativity used in crafting the story. I liked the lion tamer plot line and the monster. The pace after Matt wakes up is very fast and hard to put down. The ending was intense, clever, and a lot of fun. I liked that after Matt figured out the magic of sleep he was able to use it to his advantage. I liked the mention of Star Trek at the beginning.
What I Disliked: The reality police angle did not work for me. I know why it was added to give Matt a time tale to fix his situation, but it needed something else. Why were the Reality police children?
Recommendation: Don't Go to Sleep! Was fun not too scary but made it up in fun. The story was very inventive and different from most other Goosebumps books. The story structure follows that of Say Cheese and Die! The pace of the story made it easy to keep turning the pages. I recommend Don't Go to Sleep! to my followers.
Rating: I rated Goosebumps - Don't Go to Sleep! by R.L. Stine 3.9 out of 5 stars.

One of the weaker offerings from the Goosebumps series and one that I never read as a kid. The cover was also very misleading and ultimately ended up sort of ruining the story for me as it’s not what I was expecting.
