For once, my life will be DRAMA FREE!! WOO-HOO 😃!
Not likely! This is Nikki we’re talking about. She still hasn’t decided if she will be spending two weeks in Paris (all expenses paid) or going on tour with her band (you know, totally normal people problems), she’s annoyed by her sister’s culinary mash ups and freaking out about whatever potential disaster may unfold during the birthday party her two best friends are planning for her.

The party’s on. Then it’s cancelled. Then it’s on again. Then it’s cancelled. Again. Then it’s back on. Oh, and it’s going to be the worst party ever and/or epic.

If Nikki and her friends made it through a book without miscommunication causing all sorts of problems I’d be shocked. Chloe, Zoey and Brandon have proven their loyalty time and time again, yet Nikki still questions their friendship and deliberately keeps things from them.

There’s no character development and “SQUEEE 😃!!”, which was kinda cute for the first few books, is really annoying me now. I understand that catchphrases can be important in the continuity of a series but I would have liked to have seen some new ones added to the ones that have been used for 13 books now. I’m also over Nikki throwing up in her mouth a little; she did it four times in this book alone.

When I started this series I found Nikki to be relatable, if kinda melodramatic, and sweet. She’s got a loving family and friends and used to have cute little dramas at school that pretty much anyone could relate to. These days her problems are essentially most peoples’ dreams come true. I wonder how she’d cope if she had to face a real problem. I used to love this series but at this point I think I’m done. 🙁

I’d give this book 2.5 stars but am rounding up.

1 star, originally 2.5 stars (I just seemed to realize how much i REALLY didn't like this)
I loved this series first books. Books 1-6 are all amazing. 7, 8 and 9 are also really worth the read. But something just happened around book 10. It's like if Barbie were in book form, she'd be books 10-13. At least that's the vibe I get. Maybe I'm just getting too old for these books (I'm in my last year of junior high). The problem is I have no idea what happened with this series. The earlier books are so good and they slowly became...this. I enjoyed it well enough, but it's like 'problem. problem solved. problem. problem solved. problem. oh, wait that wasn't a problem at all!' repeat cycle. This book was confusing, slightly weird and the story isn't whole. I sound like I'm just saying," The old Dork Diaries were better!" and theywere in my opinion. But if this is the way Rachel Renee Russell wants her books to go, I'll stop ranting. Her books, her choice. I think she's changed the books' target demographic to much younger and I don't have a problem with that. If I can't enjoy these books anymore, that's my headache.
Like I said, I enjoyed this book to some extent. It just lacked a wholesome story and depth. It was stil funny and I still enjoyed the characters. I might still keep on reading Dork Diaries, we'll see.

two stars because this book felt repetitive and some things made me dislike Nikki even more as a spoiled, self-centered person.
three stars because i liked how many different fun ideas were combined to make a decent plot.

overall, it was okay i mean Nikki is pretty stupid in all of the books and i really liked the different ideas this book had.

Dork diaries is a book which makes you satisfied that you have read a book.😇 I haven't read this latest book yet, but five stars already ✌because I am pretty confident that it would not let my expectations down🙃. What I feel is that in this book, Andrea might develop a crush on Nikki 😋and this might lead to a grudge between Brandon and him. 😓We can expect more drama and fun too coz Rachel (the author) is just irresistible 💗

Okay, this one was pretty good. The characters, the humor, that zip-lining illustration--I loved it!
I kept comparing this book to the one before it--book twelve, which was disappointing. This book though, #13, was the opposite.
I had really low expectations, compared to how much I squealed when they revealed the last book's cover. (This one is just pink. Didn't they already do pink before? I don't care if it's a lighter shade! It's still pink and they already did pink! Book one AND ten!)
So, um, despite my expectations, I soon found myself laughing and crying at Nikki's "dorkiness" and the strange antics of Miss Bri-Bri, the hero of the story.
Sure, a lot of parts were too predictable (or maybe I'm just extremely good at predicting stuff!) but that's my biggest complaint.

Now to wait patiently for the third Max Crumbly book. :)

Aye.

You know Nikki...

It takes special talent to run a fake tattoo shop, win an art competition, win an ice skating competition, become a star and have your own T.V show, help run a pet store, host the school Halloween dance, win a record deal, throw the party of the year and still be the least popular person in school.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit this. Many of my students read this book series, but it is the first time I’ve read a book in the series. I bought it for my classroom library this past weekend. On the way to my in-laws, I picked it from the floorboard of the car and gave it a try. I can see why the students love it. It was a great coming-of-age tale written in diary format from the perspective of a girl. It sort of made me wish I had written diary entries when I was the character’s age because what she viewed as OMG! was LOL!

The latest fictional novel by the Rachel Renee Russell’s ”Dork Diaries” is Tales from a NOT-SO-Happy Birthday, which is thirteenth in the series. As always, Russell delivers a funny yet plot-twisting story, geared toward children and young teens.

Yikes! Nikki awakes from a horrible nightmare that her friends and frenemies are at her birthday party, and things go all wrong! Nikki is excited it’s almost her birthday, but she doesn’t really want to have a party. Her friends, Chloe and Zoey, come over to help Nikki plan her party and decide on the theme she wants. From “Backyard Picnic”, “Movie Night Pajama Party”, “Music Lover’s Listen Party”, to a random “Scream Fest”! Chloe and Zoey think of the PERFECT idea, a pool party!

Nikki doesn’t particularly enjoy spending time with her mother, but today, she accepts the invitation to go to Yoga class. While there, they stay close to the instructor to be sure they are doing it correctly. After laying out their mats, MacKenzie and her mom entered! Remember, MacKenzie and Nikki do not get along! Nikki watched as MacKenzie and her mom take out their expensive water bottles, expensive yoga mats, and expensive yoga bags. More of a reason not to like her! Obviously, Nikki is having a tough time focusing on doing the positions, and of course, MacKenzie and her mom have no problems perfectly forming each position! To make matters worse, you guessed it, Nikki embarrassingly passed gas in the middle of yoga class. Nikki quickly rose from her position and ran to the bathroom! Tears running down her face, hiding in the bathroom, her mother comes in. To comfort her, they go for ice cream and her mother also shares an embarrassing secret. At her very own prom, she threw up on her date! Gross! Little did she know, that prom date was Nikki’s very own father!

Nikki and her friends go to the park, bringing along her dog, Daisy. While there, they discuss her party, throwing around many great ideas, however money was a concern. Nikki only had $8 to her name. She’s going to ask her parents to help her. The next day, while working on the party invitations, her friends brought really cute invite cards, with over 100 people being invited! Yikes! The completed invites were left at Nikki’s house ready to be mailed out. Nikki finally gets the courage to ask her mom for the money, but after hearing how much is needed, her mom replies “No Way!” and “A cheaper party” would have to be ok. Instead of renting a DJ, her mom suggested that they rent their neighbors who are a belly dancing group. What a weird suggestion mom! She somehow, somewhere, had to figure out how to get money for her party!

The next day Nikki woke up, starving! She went downstairs and found a mess in the kitchen from Brianna cooking with her sugarplum baking kit. Nikki placed a ¨reservation” at Briannaś fake play restaurant. She stated it would take about two months until the table was ready! Nikki sat a mere two minutes and got impatient. She hurried in the kitchen and Brianna suddenly said her table was ready. Brianna cooked mini-cookies that resembled the boat on her hat. Nikki tried one and they were delicious, and usually the food was not good. They were so good that she even had to get her parents to come and try them. Once they came, they too thought they were delicious. Brianna kicked them all out of her restaurant because she claimed she had VIP guests coming. WHen asked who was the VIP, Brianna responded that Andre and Brandon were arriving! Nikki immediately ran upstairs and called Andre and Brandon and told them to cancel.

One day Nikki was watching her younger sister Brianna, and the house was awfully quiet.¨ I wonder where Brianna was, I looked everywhere, if I was Brianna where would I be? ”Brianna always loves to go to the dog park. She ran to the dog park to see if Brianna was there and all Nikki could see is a big group of people. “Maybe she is over there.?” Nikki walked over there to see and she tried to squeeze through people to see what is going on. She cannot believe it, Brianna was standing there with her friend Olive. They were selling the delicious cookies, but as dog snacks! Nikki tried to bring Brianna back home, but she wouldn’t listen to and neither would the other people. Before you knew it, Brianna and Olive ran out of snacks. Once they did, Brianna grabbed some sheets of paper and screamed “if you want some more doggy treats, fill out these forms and I’m going to open a website soon for the doggy treats.” Finally, they went home Brianna asked Nikki a very important question? She wanted Nikki to work with her. “I don’t think so Brianna!” However Brianna immediately said “WE WILL SPLIT THE MONEY!” Nikki froze, this could help with her party I looked at Brianna! Well, working together suddenly didn’t sound that terrible to Nikki! What happens? Does she have her party?

The author never lets the story gets boring. The author is really good at details in the book and also at characters. She also ends chapters at the best part, which makes me want to continue reading. At some points it has too much drama. Out of all the characters in this book, I’d prefer to be Brianna. She loves to cook, which I also enjoy. She gets into some trouble when she’s cooking, and she makes a mess, which I do too! She’s also very smart and active. Brianna is always willing to try something new. She’s pretty clever to sell those cookies as dog treats! I recommend this book because it never gets boring always leaving me on the edge of my seat. I look forward to the next book in this series, whenever that may be!

2.5 stars😭😭😭😿😿😿😢😢😢
It took me 2 and a half hours to read this book. It's sad but I think I'm getting to old for these books. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I absolutely love the journey with Nikki but.... sorry Rachel Renee Russell but I feel like you just typed some random crap on a page and hoped for the best. Which seems so mean to say but it's true! I love you RUSSELL!! Ugh I hate getting older. I'm serious though. It's not a bad book, it was good I guess. BUT OH MY GOSH!! Nikki get a hold of yourself! She's soooooooo dramatic it's insane, Like, honestly NOBODY is this dramatic. Like, she blames all her drama on Mackenzie but it's actually mainly her own dumb fault. Not saying that Hollister isn't a butt, she is, but still Nikki could have done a lot of different things to prevent all her drama. For instance, in this book she should have just told her friends right off the bat. I mean, haven't they proved themselves enough? Sorry I just think she overreacts sooo much. Like, was I just a special little 8th grader or did people actually act like this? I swear this is just so bizarre to me. She over thinks everything. An like with her first 7 books and the 9th book I feel like Russell did great with them and everything was amazing but..... the rest? They just felt like books she put out to please her publishers. I mean half the pages were just pictures so you could at least try a little harder on the few parts that were actual writing. Ugh I hate saying these things. I'm going to continue with this series but.... I need more Russell. I love ya but ya gotta give me the awesomeness that was in your first books. Also, can Nikki and Brandon PLEASE move on from blushing and get into a relationship already??

I thought it was funny. The funny part was when Nikki's little sister Briana kept baking with her new Princess Sugarplum Easy Bake Oven and made these amazing doggy snacks, great for humans and dongs. They were best selling, and Nikki and Briana became business partners, and Nikki got the birthday party of her dreams in the end, EXCEPT when the enemies came.

Actual rating: 3.4/5
Dork diaries is mainly my sister's favorite, but I usually read it anyways because Rachel Renee Russell you are a cool teen writer in a different diary style! You pretty much the only author I read that writes in diary form because 1) you have great conflicts 2) great characters 3) pictures are AMAZING (SHOUT OUT to illustrator!) 4) Mackenzie totally deserves all that happens to her. Yet again another great Dork diary book comes out and it's a great read when I have nothing to read. This isn't necessarily my type of series, but Rachel you do a great job at reeling me in. *Also, great job on catching what is in style in 2018:):):)*
Here's my downfall. I did just read a rating that didn't exactly like this book and it got my wheels spinning. Not wanting to spoil, (this might be a spoil, so perhaps skip to next paragraph? CAUTION) but Nikki and Brandon don't really do much. And I can see Nikki does kind of whine and doesn't exactly solve her problems like I would or some others might. But, I do respect the point that Rachel is trying to keep her readers hooked in and probably has everything solved at the last minute/last book. Maybe Rachel you could maybe do something about that when Nikki's in Paris? I'm sure my sister would love it for she is a fan of your books and agrees a small bit with me. Though I do understand this book is mainly for 3rd to 6th graders, possibly 7th.
By the way, again love the illustrations! I can see the progress from book one to now though I've yet to read book one:)

Happy to report I liked this one a lot more than I liked the last one. If you ignore the cringy fortnite references, it was really enjoyable. It felt like the good old days when the series was just starting with Nikki and her friends doing crazy stuff that would get them arrested.

Unfortunately, almost no progression with Brandon, but that was to be expected. At this rate, I'd take Andre any day.

I admit it was predictable, so predictable that she mentioned one sentence and I was able to skip to the next few pages to confirm exactly what I had thought would happen. But such is the nature of middle-school fiction.

Anyway, on the whole, I think I liked this one better than the last one because even though Nikki whined and complained as much as she always does, there wasn't any huge conflict that made me want to stop reading. Everything worked out almost perfectly in the end and that's the kind of ending that makes me come back to this series over and over again.

Book Level: 4.2

Dork Diaries 13 is about Nikki and her friends planning her birthday party. They've got the perfect plan, but a couple of roadblocks stand in their way, will it still be a success?

This book falls into the contemporary realistic fiction because of the story is realistic for a young girl who is planning a birthday party in today's day and times.

This book would be a great introduction for students learning about presentation of writing. Throughout this story there are pictures and doodles that make the writing appear to be the diary of Nikki's that is talking all about her birthday party planning and execution. This could show students that they could create writing that appears to also be from the viewpoint of a diary or journal.

This book could also be used to introduce journaling in the classroom. If a teacher wants their students to start writing about their days in a journal or diary, this could introduce the concept for them.

Nikki is back once again with her friends Chloe and Zoey plotting her birthday party which they palm to make a super cool pool party!

André and Brandon are also back too and still rivalling it out over Nikki's affections as she finally decides what to do over the summer, band tour or trip to Paris?

Meanwhile her rascal little sister Brianna becomes obsessed with baking and even starts up a little dog treat business with Nikki's help as it benefits her and funds her dream as we discover!

Complete with all the normal sister drama and wind ups, crushes wish are only still crushes! As well as the best friends we've come to love as well as the enemies we too hate like Nikki, this book will make you laugh, commiserate and sympathise with the various situations that Nikki finds herself facing! It was super cute and fun, a quick read anyone can enjoy.

It was BRILLIANT AND WAS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

I chose this rating because it made me attractive and I think in UK I find it the best! I would recommend it ro people who don't like reading or people who don't have the money to buy their children entertainment. I liked of when Nikki had a nigtmare about her party because it was funny and it made me exaggerated. I would like to thank Rachel Renee Russel and her children Erin and Nikki and the narrator Jenni Barber for all their hard work that I wished that I met them in real life one day and it would make me happy and my life.

This book was verey funny. Mackenzie was spying on Niki. niki yelled "your nose!" mackenzie: "what?!! whats wrong with my nose??" Niki: "its in my business, again!".
Her birthday party went on and off. Her invitations really caused a whole part to how she must have a birth day party and her friends always interupt.

Nikki the main character is stressing over her birthday party, because she wants it to be perfect. She's also deciding weather she wants to go to Paris or her bands tour. Her friends convice her to have a party but will it go good or bad. You'll have to read and see. Her life is like a roller coaster, it has its, ups, downs, and twist, overall a great book.

Probably because I like badass heriones and read a lot of them.

Not anything deep, but entertaining. Nikki is a decent main character.
