Kendra e Seth devono stare qualche giorno dai nonni paterni. Nonni che conoscono poco o nulla, e con cui non hanno voglia di passare il tempo. Il nonno gli proibisce di avventurarsi in certi posti della tenuta, ma solo quando ormai è troppo tardi i due ragazzi capiscono davvero cosa c'è attorno a loro.
All'inizio pensavo che avrei letto un romanzo molto incentrato sulle creature magiche che i ragazzi avrebbero scoperto nel loro periodo alla tenuta. In realtà non è totalmente così.
Sicuramente i due bambini incontrano parecchie creature: fate, golem, streghe, imps. E Brandon Mull crea un universo particolare in cui creature magiche e mitologiche convivono e vengono preservate, usando elementi dei miti popolari ma anche la propria immaginazione. In particolare ho trovato molto bella la descrizione delle fate, che sono così diverse l'una dall'altra e anche da quelle di cui ho letto fino ad ora. E soprattutto, sono anche di diverse etnie e non tutte europee. Le ho sempre viste ritratte come europeggianti, ed è stata una boccata d'aria fresca.
Come ho detto, però, le creature magiche non sono davvero le "star" di questo libro. I veri protagonisti, com'è giusto che sia, sono Kendra e Seth. All'inizio sono davvero antipatici. Kendra è una codarda, senza spina dorsale. Seth invece è l'esatto opposto. Non ragiona e combina distastri ad ogni azione. Certamente è avventuroso e coraggioso, cosa che mi aspetto dal protagonista di un libro come questo! Entrambi crescono nel corso del libro, però. È bellissimo vederli crescere ed adattarsi al nuovo mondo attorno a loro, attraverso errori più o meno gravi (uno in particolare mi ha fatto mettere giù il libro per un po' perché, dannazione Seth! Perché sei così stupido?). Alla fine però Kendra trova il coraggio che le serve (dopo che tutto è andato per il peggio... Veloce, la ragazza) e Seth pare capire che essere avventati, in un mondo così pieno di insidie, non è la miglior strategia.
Il personaggio che ho preferito è Lena, anche se non è esplorata tantissimo. È saggia, e fa parte di entrambi i mondi. Per questo è come tirata dall'uno e dall'altro, e pare non essere davvero felice. La sua storiaè così dolce e triste, e quel che le succede alla fine del libro mi fa pensare se almeno, adesso, sia felice. Sì. Lo so che è un personaggio fittizio, e non mi interessa.
Il nonno u n po' mi sta sui nervi, ma vedendo il comportamendo dei due ragazzi non posso davvero biasimarlo. Insomma, ci ha provato.
Lo stile di scrittura è davvero troppo semplice per i miei gusti. Capisco che sia un libro per ragazzini dagli 8 ai 13 anni, ma molte parole erno ripetute ad ogni frase e mi sembrava di essere tornata a leggere i testi di prima elementare. Però per un ragazzino o per qualcuno che si approccia a leggere in lingua potrebbe essere un'ottima lettura.
Nel complesso mi è piaciuto il complesso di creature magiche e la storia generale delle varie tenute, e quindi il plot maggiore che si va ad allargare con i prossimi libri. E la lettura è stata leggera, veloce e a tratti divertente. Se all'inizio Kendra e Seth erano due rompiscatole, sono migliorati verso la fine, e nel complesso è stata una buona lettura.

Le basi erano buone, ma dovendo parlare di questo libro, solo due parole affiorano spontanee nella mia testa: noia mortale.
Keth e Sendra, o Kendra e Seth come cavolo si chiamano, si comportano da perfetti idioti per tutto il libro.
Arrivo all'ultima pagina riprendendo le parole della strega : "Finalmente giustizia!"
Esempio perfetto di come le copertine letteralmente incantevoli traggono in inganno.

Viste le recensioni positive, mi aspettavo di più. La storia è sicuramente interessante e nuova rispetto alle tematiche fantasy per ragazzi. Personalmente avrei preferito scene d'azione più complesse e una trama più articolata. Credo quindi che la storia si faccia più interessante nei volumi che seguono.
