Shadow Academy has many secrets… and I’m one of them. Plucked from foster care and offered a scholarship to an elite school, I figured I had it made. It didn’t take long to discover how this school worked. Scholarship kids at the bottom of the heap, and way at the top, Ren Worthington. With his breath-taking good looks and bottomless pits of family money, you’d think he’d have better things to do than bully us poor kids. Not so. Ren and the other human students live their lives unaware of the creatures lurking in the dark. I wasn’t given that scholarship just for my academic skills. We’re all half-bloods and freaks - fae, witch, shifter, demon. In return for our free ride, we protect the rich brats from paranormal dangers. When one student goes missing and Ren’s life is threatened, I get made an offer. Become Ren’s tutor/bodyguard and my future is assured. But if Ren dies or discovers what I am, I’m out of here. As if he'd discover what I am. I don't even know myself. I'm weak and powerless but they want me for the job. Who knows why? I don’t want to get close to Ren, I don’t want to get to know him and I sure don't want to succumb to his charms, but I have no choice. And I discover, things aren’t what they seem on the surface. Shadow Academy has many secrets… and maybe Ren is one of them. Shadow Academy is a young adult academy series with slow burn, fated couple romance.
I’m a digital nomad (well I was until 2020 happened), although I hate that term because it makes me sound like a wanky hipster. Which I’m not. Okay, I am a bit snobby about coffee and I sometimes wear twee vintage dresses but that doesn’t make me a hipster.
On my travels, I love visiting weird and macabre places. Mummified hands that remove curses, museums of infectious diseases, collections of taxidermized frogs riding Penny Farthings - hell yeah!
Oh, and that profile photo isn't me, it's my rapscallion Bishon Frise called Hamish. Both of us highly motivated by treats.
Cherry is a goth-flavored mess who has been getting by mostly on the downlow at the academy. But life has other plans for her.
I'm not sure how believable Ren's naivete is, or even his matter-of-fact arrogance, but it was frequently hilarious.
The secondary characters really enhance & enrich the story. Almost feels like an ensemble piece at times.
I have questions remaining that I'm hoping the next book will clear up, but there's one: ***SPOILER*** The author needs to redeem Ren from apparently being willing to step back & allow his friend to assault Cherry because he was mad at her about "drugging" his horse because that was unacceptable for a book hero ***END SPOILER***
I'm actually eager to read the next book (& hoping it resolves the point that is still bugging me)
Lots of editing errors. Nothing that made it difficult to read, but enough that grammar-ocd sufferers will likely convulse, lol.
*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, hints of more than making out going on between a couple, seductive & scantily clad girl tries to seduce guy but no graphic details
Good fun. Poor girl versus rich kids. Paranormal undiscovered powers. Underlying love interests. Fae, vampires, witches, demons, what more could one want in a book. And a first kiss to remember.
With six books in the series, I'm not sure if I'll last the distance, but good enough to go on to number two to follow Cherry's adventure. 4 stars.
Perhaps I haven't read enough magic-academy books to tell a good one from a bad one, but I found this Kindle-freebie creative and funny. Cherry is a sassy heroine surrounded by strong friends. Her secret powers were a wee bit meh but left me wanting more. I actually paid money for the sequel, though admittedly, I'm not sure this book will last long in my memory.
This feels like an initial draft of a book and not it's completed form
Sorry if this review comes out a jumblef mess, I'm doing this on my phone.
Honestly my main hang-up on this book is the romance is just so mediocre. The two leads just spend the whole book existing next to each other and the kiss at the end for no reason while the bad guys run away screaming about a "prophecy".
The world building seems really lazy, things that should be fleshed out aren't and left up in the air like the author decided they were going to do that later but then forgot. The premise of the whole story doesn't make sense if you think about it for more than five minutes, like why would you make inexperienced children bodyguards, when you can just hire supernatural adults and have them pose as staff? Why have the female lead be the male lead's bodyuard when it would be much easier to hire some some supernatural adult to follow him around and wave of off as just some additional be security instead of this convoluted studying cover?
Great read. A group of supernatural teens work to protect the human students at their school. The humans don’t know about the supernatural of course. When a student goes missing Cherry is tasked with protecting Ren. He’s one of the richest kids at the school and the top target because of it. Thing is Cherry can’t stand Ren. Will she get over it and protect Ren? Will they find out Ren is a target? Will Cherry’s powers finally emerge? What will they he of they do?
What a fun read ! A private boarding school with some `poor kids` there on scholarship. But you only get a scholarship if you're a supernatural. We are the ones who protect the rest of the student body, the humans. My friends are : a demon. A fae. A lycan shape-shifter....I was recruited on scholarship too, but what exactly an i?
Kat Cotton went out on a limb to write a completely different book that caters to the genre YA. She did an incredible job to deliver a great story for us to enjoy! You will get lost in this story and will not want to put it down till the end! It is full of action and snark! Cherry lost her parents at a young age and was put in the system. Unspeakable horrors happened to her. Then, Mr. Norton shows up out of nowhere and takes her to a special school. Some are human and others are supernatural (half). The group of kids who are there on scholarships is to protect humans from other bad supes. They receive special training to help them learn skills to fight. Cherry has abilities, but they are blocked. As occurrences happen weird things start to develop from her. She is hired to protect Ren, the star of the school. They are checking into a murder, fighting off vampires who want Ren for some reason, and Ren and Cherry both have weird blood! When Ren gets bitten, Cherry worries more than she believes she could…but they also share a special connection each time they touch there is an electrical charge and something happens to both of them. Now, a prophecy has awakened and it involves Cherry and Ren! What is it all about? Why do the vamps want Ren so badly? What are Cherry and Ren? What can they do to keep the school safe? So many unanswered questions…but we will have to wait for the next book to discover some of these answers! I received this book as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
One of my favorite authors, Kat Cotton, is back with a new series. It’s totally creative, totally wonderful, spooky and with hidden layers within layers. On the surface, Scholarship Girl (Shadow Academy, Book 1) is about a poor kid, who gets a scholarship to attend an elite school where she finds herself at the bottom of the social heap that’s topped by the rich kids. Below the surface are all “half-bloods and freaks” including fae, witches, shifters and demons, who only got their scholarships in order to be there to protect the rich kids from dangerous things that go bump in the night. Then things get more twisted from there. Action, thrills, some nice potential for romance, etc., ensue, all perfectly written and totally fun. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Let's start this review with why I gave it five stars....The author had too much fun with the naming of the characters. Cherry Love sounds like it belongs to a stripper not a high school student and Ren Worthington sounds like he should be on Gilligan' Island or Rich Boys of New York. Enough about the names.
Author Kat Cotton has out done herself with this book. It held my interest to the very end and then I wanted to scream at her for the rest of the story. Waiting is not my strong point. She has woven such a great cast of character to keep this story line really moving. There is a main part that truthfully is it the main part but more of a side element to stir the readers interest...mmm There are various side stories that are carefully woven to keep the reader guessing as their true intent but I feel may be part of the back story that will all come out.
I will be keeping an eye out for the next installment.
I love to read and this is why I also love to leave reviews to help a person choose their next book.
A really good start to a new series. Our heroine might be poor, an orphan and on scholarship but she doesn't let that drag her down. Her sense of right and wrong are strong. Our hero is handsome, full of himself and entitled. The supporting characters are all different from the steadfast werewolf to the mercurial fae. The scholarship students are there as a line of defense against anything wanting to hurt the entitled students but something or someone is stalking the students. When one goes missing they know something bad has happened but are being put off by the tutors. Now she's been asked to act as bodyguard and tutor to the "king" of the school. Bullying, new powers being awoken, vampires and a killer. Why does her strange birthmark ache when she's around him? A trap, a full of attack and a fight back. Who will win and what is this strange prophecy that is now being bandied around? Nicely paced, non of the characters are into the "poor me" syndrome and lots of action.

Scholarship Girl by Kat Cotton is the first book in the Scholarship Academy series. In this book, a foster girl named Cherry is given a scholarship to a private school named Shadow Academy because she supposedly has some type of paranormal powers. To maintain her scholarship she has to be willing to train to protect the student body from paranormal threats. Cherry is willing to do what she is told to keep living in the best situation possible for her future success. This book is full of mystery, twists, turns, lots of suspense, and surprising revelations. I couldn’t put it down. Cherry’s character is so likeable that this story entranced me. If you enjoy a good paranormal mystery set in a boarding school with a strong female protagonist, you will love Scholarship Girl as much as I do. Scholarship Girl is a boarding school mystery full of paranormal surprises.
Kat Cotton has done it again with this new series I loved this story it’s very well written with great characters and I can’t wait until book 2 comes out. Cherry has been given a full scholarship she is poor so she’s at the bottom of the ladder and at the top are the rich kids like Ren who is gorgeous and rich but is a bully. Cherry is a hybrid half human half something else she doesn’t even know what she is, Cherry has been made an offer Ren has been threatened so she has to protect him at all costs because if something happens to him Cherry will lose everything so now she has to be the rich guys bodyguard as well as tutor so she definitely can’t fall for him. Fantastic start to a new series and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
This book is so well written and the characters are amazing I love Cherry because she is a spitfire like me and she doesn't play around even if it means she gets kicked out but she hates Ren with a passion and now she has to be his tutor and bodyguard when all she wants to do is let him be hurt or worse but for the allowance they give her she decides to do it but will it be worth it. Great book that I highly recommend as the story keeps you entertained until the very end of the book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have read and enjoyed Ms. Cotton’s previous books as she interwove snark and pathos with the supernatural themes. I was a bit hesitant about her latest because YA-focused stories are not my usual...so..I was thrilled that this was an amazing book! Tightly driven plot, well-developed characters and a great set up for the next book in the series.
Highly recommended!
It was my pleasure to receive this ARC and give my honest review.
How to live at a school when you don't really belong
Cherry is forced to go to this school and now she is forced into close contact with the worst person in the school. Tutoring Ten Worthington is Cherry's worst nightmare, now she has to protect from unknown danger. At the same time there is the usual class prejudices to contend with, she tries to keep under the radar. A must read for all lovers of the supernatural w.
A new concept based on paranormal scholarship students who protect a high school full of normal humans.
Loved the pace, concept and characters. Though it takes a little time to connect to the plot, once you're hooked you're hooked. I enjoyed the book and will be looking for more in this series.

Scholarship Girl (Shadow Academy Book 1) by Kat Cotton is an awesome story to read. This is book numbe one in this awesome start to a brand new series that I fell in love with. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fae, witch, shifter, demon and paranormals.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
Holy vampire dust, this book was amazing! I couldn't put it down! The main characters Cherry and Ren were absolutely perfect! The storyline grabs you from the beginning and leads you into a crazy world, filled with supernatural's of all sorts. And the world building is fun and exciting and unique. Definitely looking forward to reading the next book!
I love academy stories and this one was a good read. I couldn’t stop reading til the end! I need to know what happens next with Cherry and Ren! Looking forward to reading more of this series. Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good paranormal academy story.
This book was pretty good. It was predictable but it was entertaining. I'm always a sucker for boarding schools that have supernatural teenagers and that the school needs to be protected from outside forces and I thought this book did a great job at that. ***Spoilers ahead*** I did see it coming where Cherry starts to like Ren even though she absolutely could not stand him in the beginning but after certain circumstances, an attraction would start to form between them and Cherry would start to like them. And the second the book mentioned the school dance I knew Ren would ask Cherry, Cherry would say no and Ren would keep insisting and pressing her to go (he wanted her to go with him for protection but I think also because he was beginning to like her), and of course, a lot of shenanigans would happen at the dance. However, even if there were some parts that were predictable, it still had some interesting moments, such as the ending, and I was intrigued to see what would happen next. I thought the powers of Cherry, Lucas, Britney, and the other scholarship students had and liked the scenes where they were training and the author did a great job of getting me angry with Oscar, Blake, and Angela. She did a fantastic job of getting me to hate them. In the part when Cherry was trying to save Ren, I liked that moment. At first, I thought it was rushed, but when I sat there and thought about it, it made sense. Cherry got to know Ren and did another side to him other than being an arrogant jerk and you can tell she was starting to like him, and even if she didn't start to like him, he was a constant in her life and since she was bounced from foster home to foster home all her life, a constant was something she needed. I thought the book was interesting and I wonder what will happen next. It wasn't the best book I've read but it was entertaining and the ending kept me wondering what will happen next. So overall a decent read.
2.5 or 3 stars... It was entertaining, but i didn't get that attached to the characters and i forgot about someone having been murdered sometimes, i didn't even see any signs about the killer, it felt like "oh, it's this person" that's it. Idk if i missed something or what. There were moments i felt stuff was said instead of shown, as if it were something happening backstage off camera. The ending felt so fast and the revelations didn't cause me anything, just meh(like a bunch of info thrown last minute unnaturally. Not sure if anticlimactic would fit as a word but I'm tempted to use it).
I tend to ship couples easily but there wasn't much that made me strongly feel "i ship them so badly" when looking at the main couple, not that many reasons: the kiss rather than a "omg yesss" it felt like "uh, oh good for them i guess, idk where it's coming from but whatever".
All in all, even if it's not the best supernatural academy book i ever read, i enjoyed it as something to read with your brain off, just for fun and entertainment, that's why i give such an intermediate qualification: Not the best but not the worst either. Or maybe I've read too much YA that nothing suprises me that much anymore with this genre, finding patterns that make difficult sometimes to tell some books apart as clichés aren't given their own unique twist. Idk.
Third time lucky! I've tried two other books by Kat Cotton because she's recommended by her author sister but I didn't like her style so far. But this book flows, is funny and has an awesome cast. Feels like her sister wrote it, maybe they had some ghostwriter sessions together. We are introduced to Cherry, a poor girl having a scholarship at an elite academy where the posh children get supernatural protection from the scholarship kids. Her best friend is Lucas, a cute werewolf who keeps a wolf plushie and has shifting problems and Britney, fairy girl power rules! Cherry hasn't discovered her powers yet and prefers to stay under the radar of the bickering posh kids, especially Ren, the king of them. But of course this isn't going to her plan, she's made to protect the guy she hates. How long can she resist? And what will her powers be? There is also a secret and prophecy about her... Sadly, one star off for all the editing errors especially at the end.
I was excited to read this book as I had recently started to get back into the fantasy genre therefore, I've been ploughing through numerous books in a span of a week. This was one of them- exciting news you can buy the Kindle Ver. for free as of when I'm writing this (03/01/2021).
Before I started the book, I was glad that I had read the blurb as it had acted as a prologue where I was able to centre myself at the start of the novel. Initially I was confused as I thought Cherry had not entered her scholarship school yet therefore, I was waiting for that shift in the storyline. However, I soon realised she was already there.
When it said 'Slow burn romance', it really means a slow burn romance . I felt that a lot has happened yet, not at all. The purpose of this book was to set the pace, background and the direction of the future books. Overall, I would say that it was an easy read with light comedy.
So here’s the thing, I have read the first 3 instalments of this series and the premise is great, but the editing isn’t. Missing words, poor grammar and a sometimes difficult to follow narrative (on several occasions I thought I’d skipped some of the story) made it a frustrating read. However, the idea of demo gods, light and dark, a prophesy etc makes the story interesting but it definitely needs more work as I really felt like parts of the story didn’t flow or in some places even make sense. The third instalment was all over the place, I mean why was Ren’s mum crazy, what made her go that way, as clearly at one time she wasn’t, if Cherry’s memories were to be believed. How did Mrs Worthington and Mr Quiller manage to kill each other, in less than a paragraph the third instalment was all wrapped up without a full explanation and I won’t be reading the next instalment because that really lost me, I hate when authors do this!

Typical coming into your power paranormal teen story.
Background very common, elite school with mixed students. Normal mean girls going on. The level of brutality was over the top most of the time. Tasked with protecting the richest kid in school the students on that duty were some of the most hated. Would have liked the magic better explained and used. Left up in the air on what was actually happening with the super team, and the plans of their sponsor didn’t make a lot of sense. No justice for anyone, the actual killer got off scott free. Interesting enough to continue the series. Really hope some answers are forthcoming.
