For the Carnegie's 70th anniversary, it was named in the top ten by a panel tasked with compiling a shortlist for a public vote for an all-time favourite. It won that public vote and was named all-time "Carnegie of Carnegies" in June 2007. It was filmed under the book's US title, The Golden Compass. In 2003, His Dark Materials trilogy ranked third in the BBC's The Big Read, a poll of 200 top novels voted by the British public.

Quant Fritz, el contador d'històries, comença a relatar el darrer conte de por que ha creat a la clientela de la taverna del poble, no és conscient que està a punt de posar en marxa una sèrie de successos terribles i sobrenaturals que sacsejaran la vida dels presents, fins a una resolució dramàtica.
Relat -no és una novel·la- amb l'aspecte de conte tradicional centreeuropeu, del gènere fantàstic i de terror, però adaptat per a un públic infantil-juvenil, però que incorpora també capes de lectura més subtils que els adults sabrán apreciar, criticant qüestions com els abusos o la frivolitat dels poderosos, la indiferència de la societat davant el patiment dels altres o l'ambició sense ètica.
A més a més, l'estructura del conte és destacable, amb un estil d'històries dins d'històries que contribueix a potenciar l'element màgic i fantàstic, i que funciona -precisament- com el mecanisme mecànic d'un rellotge, amb unes peces dins d'altres. Un relat excel·lent, amb la imaginació i crítica social pròpia de l'autor de la trilogia de "La matèria obscura".
