Update: can't believe I bought this book instead of borrowing it from the library. The fat-loss industry preys on thin idealism as the standard to, you know, take your money. Don't believe the fat-shame hype - you can be fat and healthy, just as you can be thin and unwell. That said, this book probably had some good workouts and suggested diet plans, but don't expect or shame yourself if you don't look like Jackie on the cover. Most personal trainers are blessedly and genetically thin and use that to, again, be part of an industry that wants your $$$.

Original review:

A little while back my dental hygienest pretty much scared me straight into flossing. Every day. I now do it twice a day.
She informed me that oral health is an indicator of overall health and that flossing is actually more important than brushing one's teeth. I don't even really care about my teeth, I mean, who doesn't love a charmer missing a tooth or two? But something in what she told me about my health, my life, my little bits of food gunk that I wouldn't get out of my teeth unless I floss, really hit home and shook my sense of mortality. Long story short, maybe Jackie and her kind of mean-titled new book can do the same.
I liked her Bravo show, Work Out; I find her human and real. I think she may be correct that I'm cramming a ton of gross stuff into my body, and that I may be a sugar addict. I think she is on the right track in informing me that I could be on my way to contracting disease, diabetes, and other health issues. Will I listen? I don't know. I ate, like, 900 calories worth of Ikea cookies today, for crying out loud. So if Jackie can jackhammer into my brain that highly processed sugary foods are bad (= not flossing), and I should replace them by trekking to the grocery store (I totally hate grocery shopping) to get fresh vegetables and fruits (= flossing regularly), I will consider this book worth the $16 I put down at BJs.

She did have one concept that I happen to agree with, though it is not original: when you first start a diet, focus on the food you want to add to your diet instead of the food you want to eliminate. In other words, before you eat the junk food, make sure you have eaten your oatmeal, fruit, vegetables, proteins, etc. that are required for good nutrition. Then if you still want the junk food, go ahead. The idea is that if you fill up on the healthy stuff you won't have the inclination or hunger left to eat the garbage. I think this is good advice.

As for the rest of the book: hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. And please, can we go back to calling vegetables, "vegetables"? I think there are people who don't even realize that "veggies" is short for vegetables, but to me it sounds like baby-talk. I guess the whole concept is to make "veggies" sound cuter and more accessible than they are. And you need to do that if you are trying to make people think that a veggie is a substitute for a pint of Ben & Jerry's, but hey, we're all adults out there in the cold cruel world of dieting. Let's call a carrot a carrot.

While Warner has quite a few good ideas (her metaphysique is an important lesson for anyone trying to lose weight), I'm not sure her nutrition tips are as strong. I really would like to have seen more of an academic approach to her reasons behind hormone balance and detox foods, but the reference list was lacking for some of the hefty claims she was making. She made me accept some changes I have to make and reinforced others I've made since I started my personal weight loss journey (60+ pounds gone!), but I would have liked to see a more balanced approach to her dietary section. Like I said I agreed with a lot of what she was saying. At the heart of the book is a message of clean eating and intense living, which I think anyone can get behind and get results, but there was nothing truly eye opening in this book. The book was just common sense, and if you follow a lifestyle change plan (like Weight Watchers or SparkPeople) you are doing a lot of the "groundbreaking" work she preaches. The fitness section was much stronger, but again, if you are just starting out or need some variety, it could be good, but otherwise there was nothing earth shattering here.

If you need a first step to lose weight, this book can be an easy read and jumping off point. I'm not sure I personally would find this program sustainable in my life, but it could be a good first point. If you are looking for help in breaking plateaus or scientific reasoning for nutrition, look elsewhere.

I've always been a fan of Jackie Warner, so I was excited when I saw she had a book out. I tried to win it on Goodreads and then forgot about it. Yesterday I came across it again and got is thinking I might pick up a few tips. I've been looking to change up my current plan but wasn't sure what I could do that would work with my lifestyle. Opening this book was the first step in finding the answers I needed! For almost a year I've been hearing up decreased length workouts with higher intensity are so much better than long durations. I've also been struggling with finding a weight training program that works for me and Jackie outlines one that I think will be challenging but doable. The food plan she gives you is great because it is easy to maintain and similar to the way I already eat. Lastly, I love the way she explains things so well! The list of supplements was exactly what I was hoping to find. I also thought that the information on hormones and metaphysics was relevant and interesting. I'll try to post a f/u to my progress in a couple of weeks. Sooo EXCITED to get going, thanks Jackie!!!!!

We've all seen diet books or tried the new "in' diet or how about those infomercials with a new machine guaranteed to help you lose weight. And it's fast! And.....it may work for a little while then it stops working or you get tired of trying.

Well, when I picked up this book, I was skeptical. Seriously? Another diet book. But This Is Why Your Fat is totally different, I swear! From the introduction to the end of the book, Jackie speaks out to you as a friend, one on one, and totally gets it!

The first few chapters are about toxins, chemical balances, hormone balances, and etc. It makes sense that if your body chemicals aren't balanced, your either going to lose a little bit or your going to gain. Fluctuate. Yeah, that's me!

She then goes on to explain what foods you can eat that will balance those chemicals. And they aren't expensive hard to get foods either. You probably have them at home right now. There is a huge chapter on sugar. Sugar is bad, but we already knew that. But you will be amazed of all the foods sugar is in. Did you know that the average adult intakes about 30 tbs of sugar a day? Crazy!! And she lists all the different names for sugar that you will find on an ingredient list, which is very helpful.

Jackie starts you off for two weeks eating what you are right now. I know, crazy right? But there's a small trick. While your eating what you want those two weeks, you have to incorporate more food in your diet. She lists a few things you have to eat everyday for 2 weeks while your eating what you want. Her reasoning is to get your body chemicals balanced.

Then, after those 2 weeks, you switch over to a menu plan. You knew that was coming didn't you? But by following this menu plan for five days, you then get to eat what you want twice on the weekends!! There's also an exercise program, of course. But instead of all those lengthy work-outs, you work out 20 minutes a day for five days, a really intense cardio program that will soon have those inches coming off and you'll be looking and feeling your best.

You will be wiser and healthier with little effort if you read this book!

I am so happy to have won a copy of this book on Goodreads swap, just so I can tell my friends what a great tool this can be to living a healthier and happier life. This book is so easy to read with no you boring/difficult scientific jargon to read through. ANYONE, whether you lead a ridiculously hectic lifestyle or not, will be able to take the knowledge from this book and apply it to your life. You don't need to spend tons of money on expensive supplements, or hours and hours cooking healthy meals in your kitchen, or hours working out. This book has it all.. easy-to-follow information and advice, easy example recipes and meal plans, and tons of example workout moves that require a pair of dumbells or no equipment.

To sum it up, this book is a tool that contains tons of information on how very simple lifestyle changes made with little to no effort, will result in you living a much healthier (and probably happier) lifestyle. I am already going back and referencing various parts of this book as and will hold on to it forever.

Also, I HIGHLY reccomend Jackie's workout dvd "Personal Training with Jackie." It is so fun and motivating and unlike all the other tons of dvd's I own or have tried. You will have fun and be amazed at how sore you end up being the next day!

This is a very readable diet book that includes everything one needs to get started on their own personal fitness journey. Jackie Warner owns a gym (Sky Sport and Spa) and she and her team of personal trainers offer classes and programs to help people change their eating and exercise habits (and transform their bodies). Jackie includes a little bit of science (how hormones, getting enough sleep, and eating right affect our weight and metabolism), a food plan/diet, several exercise circuits, recipes, and sample food journals, training logs and other resources. This is much easier to follow than Jillian Michaels’ Master Your Metabolism, which offers similar information, but tends to overwhelm with the science. Jackie’s program is easy to understand and anyone should be able to jump in and start right away. If you already have some familiarity with logging your meals/calories, portion sizes, and exercises, you’ll be able to skim parts of this, but there are still plenty of tips/ideas you can benefit from.

Being a health focused mother of one, I was ecstatic to receive this book free through Goodreads First Reads.

There is a ton of info in this book - really touches on all aspects of being healthy and adjusting your lifestyle. I could see how the plan would benefit those who want to loose those extra pounds without feeling deprived at all. The first step of the plan is not to remove any foods, but add those foods that increase your metabolism! Who doesn't love that??

I consider myself fairly educated when it comes to health and exercise, and I can say that I learned some great tips to add into my lifestyle. Lots of information provided regarding why they recommend certain things.

My family and friends have added it to their reading lists and I know that they will take away some great tips to keep healthy!

I recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their eating, exercise or health programs.

Great book!

This was a "skim" not a "read".

I wish these exercise/diet books had something NEW and/or INTERESTING to tell me - but this (basically) was another extension of Jackie Warner's business empire in "making money off her brand".

The usual "eat this stuff" and "do these exercises" book. Boring.

You can get the same thing from Body For Life - but Body For Life actually had some read-worthy/inspiring CONTENT (re: the challege he issued, the prize money, stories of people with before/after pics - pretty amazing pics I have to add).

That's not to say that I don't admire Jackie. Just not this book.

I liked this book. I like her style and her voice. She doesn't mince words, which some people may find offensive, but usually we become offended because we know what the other person is saying to be true. I think what I liked most in the book were two things. #1 the science behind certain supplements and foods and #2 the photos of the strength training exercises in the book. Many of those I will be adding to my existing routine.

I being slightly overweight, know a lot about nutrition and have read a lot of diet or fat loss books. This is the first one in years where I actually learned things I didn't know which is saying a whole lot. Understanding why we get body fat and the horrible things we do to ourselves that affect how the machine runs. The body is a machine and if it is well maintained, like your car, it will run great or just chug along depending on how well it is maintained. This book helps you to understand how to deal with the fat body. I would highly recommend this diet plan to burning fat. I find a lot just find new way to tell you to diet and exercise, duh. This book does that too, make no mistake, but it also goes on to explain why you got fat and how to fix it.

Solid diet and exercise information. It’s about visualizing, implementing and practicing to believe, achieve and maintain a healthier body.
I know why I’m fat! I don’t want to be in the shape of Jackie Warner or any other trainer/body expert. Realistically I want to be healthier and at a weight that is good for my body structure and my mental health. I want to weigh in at a weight that is healthier with some BMI wiggle room and gain better eating and exercise habits.

I picked this up because I was stuck without a book for 3 hours. However, this was very informative how hormones affect your body and metabolism. The book also included ways to increase your fat-burning hormones!

I LOVED this book and am very surprised that it doesn't have more 4-5 star ratings! Jackie's information is true to life and no-nonesense, much the same as Bob Harper's and Jillian Michaels books regarding nutrition and fitness. However; her lay-out, ideas regarding hormones, and how sugar is the devil are very informative. I, personally, have been on a mission to get healthier, lose weight and research more about the ins and outs of nutrition and fitness this year. I've always exercises and taken pretty good care of myself but I had A LOT of bad habits...eating almost all packaged food, cereals, frozen dinners, sweets basically every day. This past year, I cut out most packaged foods, all cereals, and started eating healthier fresh foods and bought a food scale to measure portions. Almost a year later, I am 20 pounds thinner with lots of hard work. I love to read to learn as much as I can about losing weight, fitness, and living a healthy lifestyle. Jackie's approach gives instructions on healthy living, without calorie counting. The meal plans are easy to follow and while following this you will surely be hungry sometimes, she allows two cheat meals a week (and I mean CHEAT MEALS...like 1500 calories if you want to!). I usually allow one indulgence per week but there are certainly times when I feel like I need more food so this is perfect! It's not deprivation; it's real and it's healthy! I also love her fitness circuits. I enjoy at home workouts from beachbody so this is perfect to incorporate with that. I love that she preaches intensity of workouts over length- I have definitely become a believer in that! I'm grateful for this information and all of the things I've learned over the past year. It's been effort and planning but you can't put a price tag on feeling better about myself and being healthier! Thank you, Jackie, for a wonderful book!!! I took a lot of notes and wrote a lot of tips down! Can't wait to keep plugging away at my goals with all this new and helpful information!

Appealing to those of us who feel like we’re generally pretty healthy “comparatively” and wonder why we still have a few extra pounds, Jackie Warner writes this book. She addresses the dietary, exercise, and mental aspects of physical fitness.

So why are we fat? Here’s a synopsis:

-Reason #1: Sugar addiction and eating refined carbs. She points out all of the added sugar in the American diet and blames it for everything from wrinkles to mood swings, in addition to obesity. She suggests you don’t eat anything with more than 9 grams of sugar, and avoiding refined carbs except during 2 "treat" meals on weekends.
- Imbalances in the liver, thyroid, and adrenal glands, often aggravated by caffeine and alcohol consumption. Cut ‘em out.
- Working out the wrong way. She goes into great detail about varying your level of intensity and incorporating weight training into your routine.

Jackie includes sample meal plans for weight loss and lists of foods to include (especially eggs and oatmeal every day) and foods to avoid. I have to admit that some of these seemingly healthy foods left me scratching my head because she doesn’t explain WHY. I mean, millet is a whole grain and sold at health stores almost exclusively, so why is it to be avoided? Most of it made sense though.

She also talks about changing your mentality to feel pain when you look at sugary foods instead of pleasure (thinking about the effect it will have on your body).

She is not a nutritionist. So her ideas that "sugar cause hyperactivity" is a lie.(caffeine prob does my 2 cents..)(or someone wrote online after the sugar rush, then crash..) There were a lot of information that was old. Like if you don't eat you're starving yourself and your body goes into starvation mode.. and you get fat ( LIE.)
You get fat from eating TOO MANY calories(anything) AND NOT BURNING THEM! (not knowing what is a proper portion is for your body, or portion control, and not recognizing when you are no longer hungry (things i'm working on) ..

Her "idea" of 5 days of "clean eating" and 2 days of cheat are very much like weight watchers. If you stay on plan for 5 days you can "cheat" because you have extra weekly points. (so nothing new)

She may have some "good" exercise and meal ideas but they were also confusing .. 2 eggs and oatmeal and fruit ... sounds like way too much food for one meal. either OATMEAL or eggs.

I was so annoyed about her so call "advice" on what causes you to be fat..(she never was fat, was she?) it seemed she wrote about what seems like she had an eating disorder.. so she's not really a credible source on really how to loose weight and keeping it off.

I hope they just get rid of the book from the library.Too much old information..

Jackie Warner may be the fitness guru to the stars but this book is a book for anyone that wants to lose weight and get healthy. I liked the layout of the book as she lays out the plan and what you should do and follows with helpful extras. The book contains detailed pictures and instructions for the weight training portion of the plan, menus and recipes, and appendices with charts to help you plan and track your meals and exercise. Jackie writes in an easy to read, motivational, get your butt in gear and do it attitude that I really liked. The food plan is one that I would actually use with food items I would eat. Most of the diet and health books I have read before contain ingredients and food items that I have never heard of or are items that are hard to find in my area. I am overweight and unhealthy and this book has motivated me to make a change. I have set up another blog just for my journey in following Warner's plan. I would love for any of you to join me in using her plan or just stop by to read about my journey. Check it out at:

Jackie Warner's approach is easy to understand and is explained in a way that easily translates to everyday living. She takes the time to explain why you should be making certain choices in what you eat and how you exercise. This approach allows you to understand the implications and own your choices instead of just following something because you're supposed to.Her plan also allows for two "treat" meals a week, that will keep the feeling of deprivation at bay and the plan sustainable for the long haul.

Her approach to exercise is also very accessible to people with and without gym memberships and allows you flexibility to choose what works best for you as well as giving you variety that will keep things fresh.

There are also food and exercise journal samples in the back to make keeping on track easier and another appendix full of recipes.

This is a solid place to start for people looking to live a healthier lifestyle.

I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.

Despite the obnoxious title, this looks like a decent plan for a healthy lifestyle change (don’t say diet). I particularly like her opinion that sugar is the devil. She basically recommends a varied diet of veggies, fruits, good fats, whole-grain carbs, and lean meats—especially fish. None of that is new or groundbreaking. What I did find new and interesting, though maybe I haven’t read enough diet books, was her take on the role hormones play in weight management and the role of diet and exercise in hormone management. She also recommends a number of supplements, which I’m not as keen on just because I don’t know much about them. Exercise-wise, I appreciate that she focuses on intensity over quantity, recommending a hard 20-minute workout to a lazy 60-minute one. And despite owning a gym she details weight-bearing exercises that can be done at home. Overall offers a clear, straightforward plan delivered in a no-nonsense format.

Easy to read. Liked the concept of adding healthy food first, then eliminating junk food. The problem is it was completely ineffective for me. After her two week jumpstart there was no difference in my weight, inches, or energy level. What really made me bitter was spending hundreds of dollars buying all the supplements and specific food listed that I wouldn't normally buy. Also I cancelled plans for those weekends in order to shop for and prepare the food listed in addition to my regular food preparation for the week (I make my lunches & breakfasts for the whole week on the weekend). I really expected to at least have more energy or see some result.

In case it's relevant I don't drink soda, don't eat much fast food, don't snack on chips or cookies often, don't drive so public transportation keeps me active, regularly get 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day, regularly eat oatmeal for breakfast. Maybe this book would work better for a person who eats fast food daily.

Overall, I liked this book. I like that she focuses on strength training that can be done in your own living room (involving dumbbells or using your own body weight). That makes the workout super easy to do no matter where you are. I also like that using her 20-minute intensity/interval approach to cardio workouts really saves on time, and according to Jackie, is more effective.

I also agree with her statements about sugar. Whenever I do eat it, I usually end up getting a sore throat and a cold. Unfortunately, I still struggle with not eating it. I'm working on that though.

I found this book to be fairly informative; however, I would rate Jillian Michael's book "Master Your Metabolism" higher. I think her book is more informative about hormones and how various foods affect our hormones and therefore affect our metabolism, immunity, and over-all well being.

Although I finished reading the book in its entirety, a lack of time has elapsed in order for me to report upon the results I achieved via implementation of Jackie's instructions. However, her approach to diet and exercise certainly seems more manageable than a lot of other programs out there. Her perspective on eating clean for 5 days and then indulging in 2 treat meals is likely to keep more people on track since she's skipping the deprivation component that appears in most nutrition plans. Furthermore, her recommended exercise routines take only 20-30 minutes, rather than chewing up the whole day. I am a busy person with a very demanding schedule that allots me very little down time. However, I think this program is feasible and designed to accommodate people like me. I look forward to achieving the benefits of this program.

I love Jackie Warner, so I was hoping to not be disappointed by her book. I loved it! There are no fads or "tricks" here. Just solid nutritional advice. Although some of the information was not new, Jackie explained the science behind it. So many things I had heard before, but no one ever explained the "why". The format is very easy to follow and I like the initial two-week program. Instead of your typical diet that has you do a drastic cutback in teh first few weeks, Jackie just has you add in things and keep eating your regular diet. They idea behind that is you start to get the proper nutrition that your body needs, so it will stop wanting the stuff you shouldn't eat. This book is not a diet. It is truly a nutrition plan you can follow for the rest of your life.

So far, a good practical plan for eating and living. I am starting her two week starting plan because it is so doable, even a week that contains my daughter's wedding. I'll get back to you in two weeks and let you know how it worked.

Looking above, well maybe the week of a daughter's wedding wasn't the best time to start. The author gives a good plan for eating, but eating the meals could become a chore. I don't think I could sit down and eat TWO hard-boiled eggs - YUCK. And for a plan that is supposed to be balanced and un-Atkins-like, the is a shortage of vegetables. I got the feeling that a lot of the recommendations are based on what the author likes. But, these limitations are easily compensated for and the book then provides a great eating plan.

I wanted a book that really explained the food industry and basic nutritional guidance that quite simply was forgotten after so many years. She adds a thorough index and even has a chapter on positive thinking, which she calls "metaphysics" or "metaphysique" which explains how our thoughts eventually affect our actions.

I can't speak to her exercise program, obviously as I just finished reading the book and have a different program I intend on trying out first.

However, I think the nutritional information you learn about food and how your body functions with certain additives is reason enough to buy the book.

If anyone is serious about nutrition and learning how to become healthier in our "obesogenic" world than this book is for you.
