Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, hormonal symptoms, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.
As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care.
Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health.
Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee.
His latest book is The Power Foods Diet: The Breakthrough Plan that Traps, Tames, and Burns Calories for Easy and Permanent Weight Loss. With more than 120 recipes and beautiful food photography, it shows the surprising ability that certain foods have to cause weight loss.
I loved this cookbook! I was already familiar with Dr Barnard's arguments/ premise, thanks to watching Forks over Knives, so I just skipped right ahead to the recipes. And guess what? They sound really good! Who knew reduced-fat, reduced-sugar, plant-based recipes could be so great?! What's even better is that many of the recipes don't fall into the common vegetarian/vegan habit of relying on gluten products, like bread/ bread crumbs/ wheat flour. So the majority of the recipes are safe for me to eat with only minor adjustments. I liked so many of these recipes that I'm actually buying the book so I can try them at my own pace, instead of rushing through to return it to the library. Sweet Potato Hash with Red Peppers and Creamy Rice Cereal with Gingery Blueberries for breakfast, here I come! Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Chowder and Chickpea Patties with Mango Chutney for lunch, here I come! Trinidadian Curried Cauliflower, Potatoes, and Peas and Raspberry Cake for dinner, here I come. Seriously, check out the recipes, even if you aren't interested in eating vegan. I think they would make a delicious, healthy addition to any diet, even if it's just as a "Meatless Monday" recipe.
Really liked the intro and all the information included here but am not quite sold (yet) on the recipes. These are vegan no oil/fat recipes and although I am already vegan am not sure I am ready to go no oil too. Tried a couple of things and the ginger tofu was pretty good, but caramelizing onions using only stock is a big no-no - it just tasted really bitter and I just went ahead and added a bunch of vegan butter to it. Interested in cutting down on oils and fats but may have to do it gradually and not for all types of cooking...
Horrible recipes. I'm not a professional chef but I absolutely can cook and cook well. These recipes, as presented, have no flavor, and are simply a great method for turning people away from plant based eating.
Listening to Dr Barnard prompted a 21-day vegan trial which is now in its 3rd month, so was expecting a straightforward and relatively simple recipes - which is what I got.
I loved this cookbook, and am still trying recipes from it, because it is simple and often does not contain oil. Since I've weaned oil out of my diet, this book was right up my alley. Then again, I'm a fan of Neal Barnard. ;)
I took away 1 star because of sloppy editing. 3 or 4 of the recipes are missing an ingredient from the ingredient list. You read the recipe instructions and go how much of that ingredient is supposed to be in this recipe?!
A revolutionary book that challenges and encourages you to change your eating habits in order to lose weight, get healthy, stay healthy and, by extension, live a longer, more fruitful, healthy life.
Half of the recipes don't even work without major changes. Lacks basic taste, flavor.. If you dont use any fats whatsoever, you should absolutely use spices and so on.. Didn't liked the book. Does nothing to promote a healthy lifestyle, because people will turn away from veganism with THESE recipes.
Good information in the first 1/4 of the book. As I always do, I actually read each and every recipe. There are about a dozen out of the 125 recipes I want to try, especially when the summer produce comes in season. There are many good sounding soups and stews with Fall/Winter veggies too. All the recipes seem simple to prepare and use ingredients anyone who embraces a plant-based diet readily has in their house or can find easily at a non-specialty grocery store. Unfortunately, most of the recipes fall into the common vegan trap of relying on extracted oils, grains, sugar and package processed soy.
This was a library-Kindle book. So I didn't read it word for word and I didn't try any of the recipes. But I did pick up a lot of good ideas for future meals for myself. I do have this listed as wish-list as I would eventually like to pick up a copy for myself.
I have a problem with the book in that I am trying to go that extra step of being gluten-free/vegan. It is hard to find books that include both but I am gradually finding a few.
What I did like was the information at the front of the book and the little tidbits of information in the "Did You Know?" segments.
This was a great book with excellent simple recipes. There are a few ingredients that are a bit tricky to find, but most are available at any average grocery store. The introduction provided a clear, simple overview to explain why choosing a mostly meat and dairy-free diet is greatly beneficial to health.
While I'm not feeling ambitious enough to begin a vegan diet in its entirety this book certainly made a good case for how healthful it is. Have made ~15 of the recipes in here thus far and have enjoyed them all. Hearty and flavourful! Didn't even miss the meat or dairy. Would (and have been) recommend to friends.
Good advice based on solid research. The recipes sound good but the jury is still out until I actually try cooking and eating them. A little bean heavy, which doesn't work for me (ewww, beans...) but I'm willing to try almost everything else.
Great recipes...lots of variety, easy ingredients and very tasty meals. My favorites were the recipes for soups and curries. Easy to adapt for non-vegan vegetarian (for example using real dairy sour cream).
This cookbook is in my top 5 favorite cookbooks. I do not have to adjust the recipes at all! Most plant based i.e. vegan cookbooks add addictive and fattening nuts, oils, salt and sugar. Of the 18 recipes I have tried all were fabulous!
SO excited to try the recipes- and LOVE the things he has to say about why he recommends the recipes in his book. I LOVE Neal Barnard, The China Study, and Forks Over Knives- good reads, thought provoking, life changing!
I really appreciated the sound advice and great recipes in this book. I am not a vegan, just edging toward it, heh. These recipes contain very little fat and a whole lot of flavor. I hope that, if you are thinking of purchasing this book, you will do so. It's a life changer.
Short but inspiring few chapters in the beginning with plenty of sources backing up the thought that plant-based diets are better for our health. Followed by page after page of delicious recipes. You will gain plenty of inspiration just leafing through the pages.
Well written. Very extreme form of eating. Most of the recipes did not appeal to me. Written as if he is the authority on eliminting meat, dairy, eggs, which makes me skeptical.
Good solid health information for new vegans. However, I was wasn't very impressed with the recipe section. I've only tried one recipe so far and it turned out pretty bland...
