This book sits in that weird niche of all ages storybooks that opened itself to me with Tom Haugomat's Through a Life.
The story in this one has a kind of classic children's book vibe, somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. It's set in a world where magic is dying out and follows a huntress as she tries to capture the last three magicians. It works as a kind of fable on childhood and it's place in adult life, about finding magic in our world.
But the biggest draw for me is the aesthetic. I'm not sure technique is used, but it's absolutely gorgeous. The artwork is layered, full of life and color. It fun and vibrant. Very vintage yet very modern. The storybook aspect allows him to really develop each Illustration and make it the central aspect of the book.
And even the overall design makes it feel like a proper object. First of all, it's pretty big. And I'm not sure what the point if it is, but all the pages are doubled up, as they forgot to cut every other page, except there's nothing printed in between. Again, not sure if it's a particular printing process and if there's a point to it but it makes it feel special.
I'll be hunting down more of Blexbolex's work for sure
