Blood and Moonlight #2

Silence and Shadow

Rate this book
After confronting a killer and fleeing her home to be with each other, Cat and Simon arrive in the sprawling city of Londunium pretending to be a newly married couple, but don’t expect to keep up the ruse for long. Cat looks forward to honing her healing magick at the local Selanae university, but instead finds a council of ruthless leaders threatening to erase her non-Selanae "husband’s" memories to protect their secrets.

Terrified to lose him, Cat takes desperate steps to keep him safe. But when a string of mutilated bodies turns up in the woods outside the city, and Simon is recruited to profile the killer, Cat is pulled back into a world of murder, mayhem, and magick—one that threatens to swallow her, and everything she loves, whole.

The sequel to Erin Beaty’s buzzworthy YA medieval fantasy-thriller Blood and Moonlight, Silence and Shadow is full of swoony romance, dangerous magick, and murder—perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Mary E. Pearson.

***Hello Readers! I just want to pop in here and explain that I do not accept friend requests on social media (Goodreads included) unless I know you in real life for several reasons, foremost being the nature of my husband's military job. I promise it isn't personal, and I appreciate everyone who wants to know more about me!***

Erin Beaty was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, which means she can't drive a tractor, but she won't eat veggies that come from a can. She graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in rocket science and somehow always ended up writing her study group's lab reports. After serving in the fleet as a weapons officer and a leadership instructor, she resigned to take care of her growing family. It still amazes her when other people want to hear the stories that come out of her head.

She and her husband have five children, two cats, and a vegetable garden and live wherever the navy tells them to go.

Erin Beaty is represented by Valerie Noble. Her young adult fantasy adventure, THE TRAITOR'S KISS, the first in a trilogy called The Traitor's Trilogy, will be released May 9th, 2017

im so incredibly pleased with this. the story retains all of the elements i loved about the first book, but also provides the answers and extra world-building i was hoping it would.

i enjoyed how this sequel continues the pattern of what made ‘blood and moonlight’ so entertaining. theres another mysterious serial killer on the loose, the exciting moon magic is further explored, the sweet romance continues to blossom, the impressive old-school investigating is still a driving force, and the medieval setting will always be a win in my book.

i will say the character development isnt as strong in this installment, but its totally made up for by every other aspect of the writing and storytelling.

so all in all, it was such a treat to go on another adventure exploring the depths of criminal minds and societal secrets with cat and simon.

a massive thanks to macmillan / farrar, straus and giroux for the ARC!!

“If you love someone it should be enough to weather whatever storms come your way.”

I still can't get over how visually striking the cover for Silence and Shadow is - it really does take your breath away, capturing Catrin and Simon so beautifully. 💚💚 I am sad, though, that the story wasn't as captivatingly breath-taking as it's cover, or the first installment in this series, for that matter. Still, it was a decent continuation into Catrin's journey as she learns more about her family past and herself.

“Holding it makes me feel like I’m standing on the edge of a cliff, but with one step I wouldn’t fall—I would fly.

“Do you like it?” the jeweler asks.

Like it? Stars above, what could I do—what couldn’t I do—with such a stone?”

Catrin was a lot more confident and determined here - she didn't cower to demands, she had a mind of her own, and she knew where her strengths lay. I liked that - I liked that she stood up for herself, that she knew that Simon was the one person who she could trust unequivocally, but still ventured further into wanting to know about her powers and hone her skills of what it means to be a Selenae, one of the People of the Night. 💠💠

Even as we are introduced to new characters who may not have their best interests at heart, Catrin always tried to find a way out of their situation - without ruffling any feathers. And, well, as it is, even when they head into unchartered lands - they cannot escape murders - even more ghastly than the last - that will once again have Catrin examine the talents that lie within her and how far she's willing to go to grasp it. ✨✨

It's also evident that Erin Beaty put a lot of heart into expanding the world she has created, as well as how blood and moonlight's spiritual energy is reflected into stones and the powers it provides her with. It played a vital part to the story, and I appreciated that as Catrin makes her way through the challenges of her superiors' warnings - 'disobey at your personal peril,' - suspected tortured victims and gruesome vivid memories - she always sought a way to make things right - not only for herself, but for the people involved. Some of the new characters weren't quite as memorable, but Priscilla and Hespera were two figures that were very well-fleshed out and I enjoyed reading Catrin's interactions with the two of them - especially, since both of them were of importance to the plot. 👌🏻👌🏻

Sadly, the mystery wasn't as compelling and interesting as it was before; yes, there were still ghastly murders taking place, but the tension didn't feel that palpable as before. I do appreciate the play on the title - it is very clever, especially when you take into account how much of Catrin's talents were sometimes out of her control and something that she could lose. And yet, in terms of the actual mystery, I never got that chilling sense that Catrin was in any imminent danger from the culprit. 😞

I even missed the sleuthing methods that she resorted to before. She was so caught up in serving as 'a chess piece being fought over by two powerful players' who sought her for her incredible strength, that I never got that sense that she really cared about the crimes afoot this time. Which definitely is a counter to how much of her relationship with Simon was always threatened at any given moment - a critical moment that really hurt and made me fearful of what was to happen, haunted by those foreboding words 'there are some things we’re not meant to have.' 😔😔

“Simon settles around me, the tension in his muscles slowly easing until we’ve melted into one shape with one breath, one heartbeat.

How is it possible to feel so close to a person and yet so far?”

Simon took a bit of a back seat in this story - he wasn't as prominent as I would have hoped, but he still played an integral part in many of Catrin's decisions concerning her future. He was still very loyal to Catrin, so very endeared by her nature and committed to helping her in whatever way, even when he didn't quite agree with her thinking. They also shared some very cute moments that were really very adorable in how gentle, yet hesitant they were with their feelings - until they weren't.

Their relationship was put to the test on more than one occasion, how the odds were forever not in their favor; but, seeing them persevere through it not only deepened their bonding, but strengthened their resolve in truly being together - in every essence. 'He’s not just “a boy,” he’s Simon.' I wished, though, that there could have been more scenes of them actually together and working alongside one another to solve the mystery. Certain events kept them apart, which made this also lack that interactive banter between the two that made their dynamic so very special to me. 🥰🥰

“If I wasn’t here, you’d still be a student, doubtlessly making friends and exploring your magick. If anything, I’m in your way.”

“But I want you here. Isn’t that good enough?”

Simon smiles a little as he bends his neck to kiss the tip of my nose. “Being wanted isn’t something I’m used to, but it’s growing on me.”

Awww - no, but seriously, these two really were very sweet together. 🥹🥹 Their fluffy moments really balanced out all the darker and heavier troubles that they encountered. And it may have taken a bit longer to get me wholly invested into it, this was still a respectable continuation into the magical world where Blood and Moonlight merge together.

There were a few surprise twists that I enjoyed, and with how the story ended, I am glad where the characters left off at. However, if the author does choose to revisit them, I would not mind since there is still the possibility that there is more for Catrin to learn about herself and all the unique talents that she possesses. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I was initially drawn to the dark academia vibes and the infusion of magic, but unfortunately, the FMC was too annoying. Also, I couldn't immerse myself in the story.

Overall, not for me.

———my thoughts———

While I enjoyed the first book, I can quite certainly say I loved this one.
And while I’m still not sure if there will be any more books in this series (as there’s no cliffhanger), I liked how this one ended.
In Silence And Shadow everything that I found a little lacking last book was fixed.
There was so much more explanation and depth into the magic side of the story, which was exactly what I thought was missing from book one.
Catrin’s character developed beautifully, and while she sometimes still feels the unsure girl she was, I love the more confident woman she’s become.
And Simon?
With every page I fell more in love with his quietly protective sweetness.
His and Catrin’s relationship made me so happy, and they’re adorable.
I don’t think I can actually count the amount of times I smiled over their self-sacrificing overprotectiveness of each other, even while I wanted to shake them.
Quite simply, I love them.
YA relationships are always a special kind of sweet and theirs is no different.
There was also the mystery side to the story, which wasn’t as large a part as the first book.
It was more of a side plot, but still played a fairly large part in the storyline.
Even though I figured out some of the plot twists chapters before they happened, I wasn’t even annoyed.
There’s just an overall care to the writing, like the author researched everything completely.
And it’s honestly something we should have more of.
Again, even when she’s writing about mental health (which is notoriously hard to depict properly), she does it so well.
I would honestly love to read five more books about Cat and Simon’s adventures, but if this is where their story stops, I’m happy with it.

“I love you, Catrin.”
“And I love you, Simon.”

Marvelous. The story, the plot, the characters. Everything was just enjoyed. I was immersed in this story, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed this one as much as the first one. Simon & Cat are so well written, their chemistry is instant, there's mystery and I was here for this until the end.

Silence and Shadow is the sequel to Blood and Moonlight and starts off on the Solstice festival. Catrin and Simon already find themselves in a dangerous situation, which is nothing compared to what lies ahead.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one because Catrin knows about her powers and I have a feeling for the story and the characters. Since I'm not an avid mystery reader, the first book had me wondering where the story is going and I felt unsure, but with the second book, I'm like, bring it on! :) . Each book has its unique charm and once again Beaty manages to create a stunning world with vivid descriptions.

We're travelling alongside Catrin and Simon and meet new characters, solve new murder mysteries and are on the lookout for the murderer. The story never reached a point where it felt boring or predictable, the tension shimmered just above the surface especially when the new characters entered and the plot twists dropped.

Strange connections are made, ones I did not see coming and I was so curious how the story would progress. If you like the fake relationship/friend-to-lovers tropes, you'll appreciate Catrin and Simon's relationship and the slow burn of the romance.
The stones and the magick intrigued me, and while Catrin hoped to learn more about her moon magick at the Selenae University, I felt she learned a lot more about herself and other characters.

I must mention how stunning the cover is and how it captures the essence of Catrin and Simon's characters. The author managed to combine mystery and fantasy in such a unique way. Readers get the Sherlock Holmes vibes but with a touch of fantasy such as Shadow and Bone. This book will pique both the interests of mystery and fantasy readers while balancing both genres well and catering to each reader's needs.

I highly recommend adding Blood and Moonlight and Silence and Shadow to your TBR, as Beaty will introduce you to a whole new world.

Thank you Pan MacMillan SA for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There were aspects about this sequel that I liked more than the first book, and there were some that I liked less. However, the only constant thought in my head throughout both reads was: this duology really would have been so much better without the romance . It always felt like an unnecessary subplot that took away from the fantasy and the mystery that should have been the main focus of both this and the first book.

Key points: Main mystery did not have any foreshadowing (though the "background" behind this was WAY more interesting than the first book), secondary mystery was very obvious, fake marriage subplot with no chemistry, lots of info-dumping and guessing on the fantasy world-building (could have been done better, but the idea was great)

I had a hard time finishing this one. It moved quite slow and felt like it was taking forever to finish. It also felt like not much happened in the story except for infatuated pining and whining. The writing was mediocre at best. Silence and Shadow definitely did not live up to it's predecessor, and earned only two stars from me.

I enjoyed this so much!! Blood and Moonlight was a surprise book to me last year--a fantasy murder mystery, not something I had ever really thought to put together, but it worked really well alongside a girl coming into hidden power and a budding romance. It's sequel, Silence and Shadow, follows Catrin and Simon as they attempt to get Catrin magical training--and inadvertently have to masquerade as a married couple to stay together. But murder seems to follow them, and they are quickly swept up in a new investigation in a new city.

Some aspects of the plot were a little obvious for me--the secondary bad guy, for instance--and certain things about who was allowed access to Selenae knowledge made me sad with the bittersweet way things shook out. But on the whole I really enjoyed this duology and especially this culmination of Simon and Catrin's romance. The murders in this one were also quite creepy. If you're looking for a fresh fantasy direction that isn't your usual quest or kingdom struggle, pick up these books and give them a whirl--especially if you like shows like Criminal Minds. Really good. 4 stars.

Silence and Shadow comes out Oct 3. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC copy.

Gaaaah this book was JUST as brilliant as the first one in the series. I absolutely adore Catrin and Simon's characters. I love how the second book started with them in the middle of a new town, it kind of gave me Shadow and Bone vibes when Alina and Mal had escaped from the Darkling. I love that old town, cobbled pathways, market feel the first few chapters have!

I really loved how the plot of this one was new and fresh and even though they ended up solving murders again, it didn't feel repetitive. Instead, it has that amazing mysterious "why do bad things follow us" feel. I think that Londunium was so different to Gallia and I loved learning about the new town, especially seeing as Catrin was more involved with the Selenae (the moon worshippers).

I loved seeing Catrin grow into her powers, I loved how much she learned from Simon and was able to apply it to her investigations. I think the amount of mystery in this book was perfect! I didn't know who to trust, I had no idea who was telling the truth and no idea who the murderer was or even could be. This book gave me quite a scare with the plot twists - TWICE!! - but everything worked out in the end. I loved experiencing how Catrin and Simon both started to realise their feelings for each other. This was such an exciting book and I just adore this series!

Thank you, @panmacmillansa, for this absolutely stunning book 🖤

• Every shadow has a story, every silence a voice waiting to be heard. •

🩸🌕☠️

“‘Did I tell you enough times that I love you?’”

“Home is wherever you are.”

OH MY GOD
I NEED TIME TO PROCESS

erin beaty has done it again, folks. i swear, everything she writes has drugs in it. i could not put this down. i will read anything she writes.

in all honesty, i think both blood & moonlight and silence & shadow deserve four stars, but i gave the former 5 because it was the first book i had enjoyed in a while. despite that, THEY ARE STILL SO GOOD.

i’m so impressed?? this book was CRAZY and obviously took a lot of organizing, crafting, researching, etc. i was flabbergasted. this is a difficult book to write, and yet. and yet erin beaty did it and it is absolutely delightful.

i am completely and utterly invested in this romance, as i was hooked from the first book, and i hoped for more content. BOYY did i receive!!!! simon and cat. GUYS I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. their chemistry is so natural and organic😭 so married couple coded. i love them so much!!!!!!!!! THEY DELIVERED SO MUCH I JUST LOVE THEM AND I WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT THEM. ERIN PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER BOOK WITH THEM PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

anyway!!

the magic system was actually really interesting and erin explains it in such a well-written way. this book focuses on that aspect more (which i wasn’t bothered by, surprisingly. simon left for a ton of pages but i wasn’t bored at all. i love it when i don’t have to rely on the love interest to keep me interested.)

note that the world-building (idk if i would categorize it like that, as this is the second installment, but you know what i mean) IS SO GOOD!!! i usually detest world-crafting but this was actually so interesting. many points to erin beaty, she has completed a feat that many authors cannot accomplish for me.

the murder mystery was slightly lacking in comparison to the first book, because silence & shadow spent so much time on the magic system. this isn’t really a bad thing, but catrin does find the murderer early on and i guessed the secondary villain from, like, the first 25% of the book. and i’m oblivious. so do with that what you will.

also!!! simon!! he did not get to use his wicked, delightful investigating skills as much as i wanted him to. was he still hot?? yes. absolutely. this man is a treasure. i want him. there was a good 100 pages, though, where he wasn’t involved AT ALL, and i missed him😭 it wasn’t boring without him but i still wanted him there!!! (i need him)

catrin was enjoyable, but i don’t particularly love her. she’s especially impulsive, which i do like, but in stupid ways. so i don’t love that. her personality is fine, she is fine, she is an enjoyable protagonist. i mean, i like her enough to stay in her head.

taking a few seconds to mention HESPERA!!! i knew she was good news. i think i liked her more than cat. she was so complex and intriguing and a PHENOMENAL character who literally saved everyone😭 prove me wrong. you can’t. she carried.

ERIN PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER ONE. PLEASE. I WANT TO SEE THESE CHARACTERS (simon) AGAIN PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Silence and Shadow is the sequel to Blood and Moonlight and the conclusion to the duology. This book continues where the first one ended and our main characters find themselves trying to figure out another murder mystery.

I really love this series. While I think the first book was stronger overall, this book really expanded on the magic system in an interesting way. It is super unique and I wish there were going to be more books in the series just to learn more about it! It has a lot to do with the moon and its phases and blood magic.

I adored the romance in this book but I can see it being something that doesn’t work for everyone. It’s a really sweet, slowburn that felt very organic.

My only issue with this book is some of it didn’t seem perfectly cohesive. It was a lot of moving parts that would have been better if there was another book to split it between. Basically, I wish this would have been a trilogy instead of a duology.

But if you like Belladonna or Stalking Jack the Ripper, this is a great series to read! It has all the darker fantasy vibes I love in a young adult book. This is a perfect book series for the fall!

Thank you so much to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book ahead of its release. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was SO FREAKING GOOD! I don’t know why I put off reading it. I think that I thought it wouldn’t live up to the first in the series? But it did.
This series is basically criminal minds but in a medieval high fantasy setting. Must I say more?
I adored the characters. Catrin was easy to relate to and I love being in her head. Simon is the epitome of book boyfriend—though I wanted a little bit more of the two of them being flirty. I wish the book had leaned into the fake marriage trope a little harder. That said, what interactions we did get had me giddy. I love their relationship so much.
Once again, this book was the perfect blend of fantasy and mystery. Both aspects were distinct, engaging, and stood on their own; and they were interwoven beautifully.
I desperately want more books in this series. Please and thank you.

Erin Beaty's Silence and Shadow is the second and apparent final installment in the authors Blood and Moonlight duology. Forced to flee for their lives after an explosive confrontation with a depraved killer in the first installment, Selenae novice Catrin who is just learning about her abilities, and brilliant criminal profiler Simon of Mesanus who is now a fugitive, arrive in the sprawling city of Londunium, hoping for a fresh start and an opportunity for Catrin to hone her newfound magic.

unfortunately this book did not grip me as much as book one did. for me, i think it was because i guessed very early on who the killer was in this book. the world building was amazing though and it was fun to read more about the selenae magic!!

the writing was still very well done and the characters were once again interesting to follow! it is a worthy sequel, as we got some answers that were left unanswered in book one^^

Thank you to Pan MacMillan South Africa for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Silence and Shadow was the first book on my April TBR because I simply couldn't wait to dive back into this amazing world and discover what would happen to our poor, beloved Catrin and her beau; having to now make a new life for themselves, they head towards Londinium and an uncertain future.

Just as in the first book, there is a lot to expect in this one; the pacing is great because there is always something going on; the characters are phenomenal and the character growth is perfect; the magic system, which is fresh and unique, is expanded upon; there is deception, betrayal, intrigue, mystery, suspense and romance - what is there not to love?

I am completely blown away by this duology! More, please!

After reading the first book in this series, Blood and Moonlight, and really enjoying it, I was excited to pick up the sequel and final (?) book following Catrin and Simon. Unfortunately, while I still liked it, it wasn’t as good as the first book (in my opinion). I think the reason for that was that Simon was in this book less. He was a fascinating character in book one and I loved watching him get inside the head of the killer. He’s not in this story as much (it’s more about Catrin navigating her powers) so that detracted for me a bit. I also found some aspects of the world and world building to be a bit convoluted at times. There were still plenty of chilling times with another serial killer to outwit, and this sequel is still worth picking up if you enjoyed the first one.

In this book, I noticed the author focuses more on Catrin's exploration of her magicks rather than the murder mystery, which was the aspect I was eager to read about in the sequel. I was somewhat disappointed that the murder mystery did not deliver as well as I had anticipated based on the blurb. It was a bit predictable, and when the killer was revealed, it felt abrupt with no further explanation. Rather than being thrilling or twisted like Book 1, it ended up being just mediocre.

As for Catrin's part, I found it somewhat enjoyable since she is finally surrounded by people like her, but she also gets entangled in schemes and ulterior motives. The romance elements were just okay; I didn’t feel much chemistry between the characters or anything in their relationship since Book 1. They are cute, but that’s all. I can't see how they can form a perfect couple. As for the ending, I expected more, but I suppose the author wanted to conclude the duology that way. I accepted it, even though I didn’t really like how it ended.

Overall, I liked Book 1 better than this one; it felt less compelling. However, I'm relieved to have finished the series and can now move on to another. It was a well-rounded experience, but I wouldn’t reread the series.
