“Elizabeth loved dogs and horses and dreamed of living on a farm.”

Instead of a quiet life in the country, she unexpectedly became the longest-reigning British monarch and served with remarkable poise and dignity.

“Her parents and little sister used to call her Lilibet. To the rest of the world, she was Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary—King George’s granddaughter.”

This biography takes her through her childhood, where she was raised with a sense of duty as a princess, but with no thought of her becoming queen. After all, her uncle and father were ahead of her in line for the throne. But when her grandfather died, and then her uncle abdicated the throne, her father became king and they moved into Buckingham Palace.

“From that day on, she would be taught how to be the next queen. The first lesson was simple: a good queen serves her people, not the other way around.”

I would say she learned that lesson well, but the illustration certainly shows how many people serve the royal family. She was only ten years old.

Meanwhile, World War II is underway, and she trained as a driver and mechanic. After the war, when she was only twenty-one, the country celebrated her marriage to Prince Philip. The book tells us she saved her ration coupons for the fabric for her wedding dress. I thought that was a nice touch to her story.

Sadly, she lost her father shortly after and was stunned to discover she was it – the next head of state.

“Overnight, the young princess became queen of kingdoms all over the world, from England to faraway South Africa.”

She learns it is a full-time job with constant demands on her time and attention. No wonder she enjoyed the company of dogs and horses!

“. . .a long list of duties, from receiving important guests and meeting the prime minister every week, to addressing the nation and opening dozens of ceremonies. It was exhausting!”

Of course there was much that was enjoyable, and I remember plenty of pictures of her smiling and laughing with genuine pleasure.

“. . .she had the fortune to meet unforgettable people who had made the world a better place.”

There is no doubt that her love of country life and animals never dimmed, and one of my favourite illustrations is this one, of her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She spent her summers there every year, and it was at Balmoral that she died in early September 2022. (This was being published before her death.)

“Elizabeth traveled overseas more than 250 times, receiving the most unusual gifts, from a pair of cowboy boots to an elephant called Jumbo. However, nothing felt better than sleeping on the same bed all summer at Balmoral Castle!”

There is scarcely a page without a corgi, but I think she would be surprised to see no horses! Still, with 96 years to cover in a small picture book, the author has done an excellent job. I’d have chosen a different illustration style, but that’s a personal thing.

These editions always include a biography of a couple of hundred words with a recommendation for further reading and with four black and white photos. I think this is a great choice.

“A much-cherished sovereign across the globe, Queen Elizabeth is respected for a lifetime of service and devotion to her people.”

I absolutely love the Little People, Big Dreams Series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. I think her books are wonderful for children and expand each’s vision of life’s possibilities. Yet, her books are not just for children, I always love reading them as an adult. Every time I read about a person, I learn something new.

I was excited to receive a copy about Queen Elizabeth. I think like many people, I wanted to know more about the Queen of the UK, after her passing on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96 years old. Elizabeth was always known for how seriously she saw her sense of duty to the people of her country. She served for 70 years which made her the longest reigning Queen in the world. She was also the most admired, which I just learned reading this book.

Elizabeth was not considered likely to ever serve as Queen since she was third in line to the throne. However, when her Uncle, Edward VIII, renounces his possibility of becoming King, her father George VI becomes the next King. The family moves to Buckingham Palace. At just 10 years old, Elizabeth is given lessons to learn to be the Queen. She takes from this a very strong sense of duty and thinks a good Queen serves her people and not the other way around.

At just 26 years old, when her beloved father dies, Elizabeth becomes Queen of the UK on June 2, 1953. I learned previously she had volunteered for the British Army as a Driver and Mechanic. At 21, she married Prince Phillip and saved Ration Coupons for the fabric for her Wedding Dress, loved animals and had 30 Corgi Dogs in all. Each dog was made a meal from the Palace Kitchen!

Queen Elizabeth tried starting new traditions such as walking through the crowds to say hello, she made a law saying girls had the same right to the throne as boys which was quite an accomplishment, and started a televised Annual Christmas Broadcast. In all she met 14 British Prime Ministers, 13 Presidents, and many Leaders who had a role in shaping the World. She traveled overseas more then 250 times visiting 110 countries.

This was a fascinating book that has so much history to learn and also terrific whimsical information that children are likely to love. The Queen loved animals, so someone sent her an Elephant named Jumbo. The illustrations are beautiful and fun and add to the special quality of this book. I definitely recommend this book for schools, libraries, and book stores.

Thank you NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for this book. I am always happy to leave a review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Queen Elizabeth is an adorable and important addition to the Little People Big Dreams series and children will definitely enjoy reading this one. This biography teaches children about such an important figure over the past 70 years and what a strong, gracious lady the queen was. This would make a great addition to any school library for sure and is important for children of the UK especially to have the option to read. The illustrations are fantastic and I love the cover so much!

Queen Elizabeth is another wonderful addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series of child friendly biographies for children. She lived such a remarkable life, that this book is only able to touch on the bare bones. Being queen was never her dream, but when she was put into the position at an early age, she stepped up and did a remarkable job. Her honor, dedication and service will be remembered for years to come. Even as a teenager, she tried to reassure the people of England (the children) by sending them an uplifting message of hope when the war broke out. She added new traditions to the monarchy, and made it more approachable. This book was written and in production before Queen Elizabeth passed, so it is not included in the book. The illustrations by Melissa Lee Johnson were okay, but knowing what Queen Elizabeth looked like, I didn't the likeness in most of the images. This is a great book for kids about accepting responsibility, changing your dreams when necessary, doing your best and living your life with all that is handed to you. This is a great start to learn about her life and teachers can use it and others in the series to teach about biographies, begin the idea of research (use sources recommended at the back) and timelines. Another book that I recommend be in school and class libraries.

Reflections and lessons learned:
“The first lesson was simple: a good queen serves her people, not the other way around”

She was never going to be a person that I’d imagined to have a pint with in the pub, but I’ve always understood that in terms of the societal set up, rightly or wrongly as a concept for a country and the individuals involved. As we look back over a life of servitude and commitment though, it’s hard not to be moved by the situations, reactions and actions taken

Another wonderful book in this series that I loved. As an adult, there was information in this book that I hadn't even known about the Queen. The illustrations are beautiful and heartwarming, and the facts are accessible and informative for children, too. I know for a fact that children reading this book will actually learn what it takes to be a Queen rather than being swept away with the usual life we see a Princess/Queen lead in the usual Fairytales! It's great to have a real life story that is inspiring and realistic for young children.

Being a queen wasn’t something Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, or Lilibet as her family called her, had dreamed about nor been prepared for. After all, she was born a princess, the granddaughter of King George. There were many others in line for the throne. Unlike her grandchildren today who are being raised in the shadow of what’s ahead, the first decade of Elizabeth’s life was carefree, with little understanding nor expectation of a royal destiny.

The author’s focus on two major events in young Elizabeth’s life, highlight moments which changed her life forever. This is a good opportunity to spend time with children discussing what happens when events, out of our control, occur and cause our journey to take a different direction. I read this with my niece and nephew, and we talked about how our attitude can make all the difference in the world. The first lesson Elizabeth learned was that “a good queen serves her people, not the other way around.’ This shaped her destiny and contributed to her incredible legacy as the longest serving British monarch.

For seventy years, putting others first served the Queen well. We could learn from this lesson.

As always, Vegara’s books have the best illustrations! This one kept my niece and nephew engaged and was the perfect springboard to further discussions about our new King, the succession and what it means to be a royal child.

I was gifted this advance copy by Quarto Publishing Group, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

First, a personal note. As someone owned by a corgi mix, I was delighted to see the prominence given to the adorably cute royal corgis throughout. After all, Queen Elizabeth brought the corgi breed to international attention and at one time owned 30 corgis. Heck, even though the book ends prior to her death, two of her corgis (not to mention one of her horses) made an appearance at the state funeral recently.

That said, I'm glad the book not only ended on a happy note but didn't go into the royal shenanigans and issues the Queen faced during her long reign. This is a book for young readers, aimed at simply introducing them to a prominent figure and no need to taint that experience. Bad stuff happens to all of us, so appreciate the focus on her life and accomplishments.

As a former teacher, I immediately latched onto the possibilities for discussion of a various things that the book might promote. For instance, is being a queen as fairy tale wonderful as it sounds? What did she have to give up to fill the role of queen? What would you be willing to give up to reach your goals? How is someone prepared for such a role as they grow up? How would you feel knowing your every word, action, appearance, and even wardrobe (right down to the purse she carried) will be analyzed and reported on endlessly? How much freedom and power does a modern queen have anyway? How is it possible there have been more than one Queen Elizabeth in history? On a personal note, to instill interest in history, one might venture into creating family trees. Discovering you have royal bloodlines, however minute, is a way to make history personal and more interesting than a recitation of mere facts. And....so much more.

Bottom line, this is a bare bones, upbeat look at the life and times of the late Queen Elizabeth. It's an easy read, part of the #LittlePeopleBigDreams series, although reading with a parent opens many other possibilities, and is delightfully illustrated. And, yes, dog lovers, there are many, many corgis that pop up on just about every page. Fun book and shows how childhood dreams can alter. A timeline and real life photos are included at the end.

Thanks #NetGalley and #QuartoPublishingGroup - #FrancesLincolnChildren'sBooks for allowing me this lovely peek into the late Queen Elizabeth's life.

Part of the Little People, Big Dreams series, cleverly written by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and always memorably illustrated throughout. The words capture the essence of each childhood and the influences on their lives.

Queen Elizabeth is an exception perhaps to the rule; some would say she was born into privilege, part of the elite classes. However, the story rather than side-stepping the facts, focuses on the things that made Elizabeth such a special and much loved monarch.

She was never really seen as a future Queen but her uncle’s abdication threw her into being a future heir to the throne.

The author shows a young child becoming a princess and quickly after her Father’s premature death becoming Queen. In between, she found not just a dream but a sense of duty. Elizabeth, with great maturity pledged to serve her people throughout her life, however short, actively, for the betterment of others and all people.

As a woman she was a outnumbered with few female influencers, when the world was dominated by men, in a man’s world. The life, we celebrated at her Platinum Jubilee was one of overcoming obstacles, inclusion of others and lifelong service.

She could not have envisaged what the future would bring, but she was prepared and enabling so that many others fulfilled their own dreams through her advocacy, support and service.

In recent days the U.K. and across the world, many have given thanks for her life of dedicated service.

This book is not exploiting these recent events but helping our children make sense of another child who made a lasting impression in life.

As with many of the books I’ve read in this series this is in essence what these titles aim to share. Knowledge, facts and that greatest gift to want to make a difference.

A Special Thanks to Net Gallery for this Book.
This is a wonderful children’s book that covers the Queen’s life to date (Obviously Excluding her recent passing) in a straightforward way that is easy to understand and read. What I enjoyed about this book was the warmth for the Queen that I felt throughout this book. Mitchell did a very good job talking about the negative events in the Queen’s family life without taking away from the overall story and focus. The Queen’s faith and love for God are warmly intertwined throughout. This is a good book to introduce young people to the Queen and especially to her saviour whom she loves—the “Lord of lords and King of kings” (Revelation 17:14)
“...he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”

A sweet book about Queen Elizabeth’s life. I love that the book introduces the reader to Elizabeth as a child and that the reader gets to watch her grow! Unfortunately the book didn’t touch much on her Christian faith, which was what motivated her to serve the way she did. It’s still a cute mini biography, but I felt it was lacking this important piece.

The illustrations are beautiful and fun to look at!

Ah, at last, a visit to the Tudor times of England and a Queen who had to struggle to get and keep the throne, who reigned while Shakespeare was alive, but who needed a Scot to bail England out with the job of ruling after her virginal time was past and the Tudors were no more. Oh, wait, now, what's this? This has got the war in, and a relative abdicating, and marrying Philip the Greek.

Oh, I see, you actually mean Elizabeth II, the most recent Queen of England, and not the person named on the cover. So you mean the dead one, who was still warm in her coffin while this book was being promoted? Well, I'm glad it's out of date for you, then, for parading this around as a digital review copy within days of her passing and when she's still lying in state is shameful.

So not only does this have a completely inaccurate and misleading title, it came across as a most disrespectful cash-in. Any other time and it would have been a perfectly serviceable entry to this massive franchise, but it should have been withdrawn from the publicity rounds as a simple sign of awareness.

I was sent a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly, I love this book series. I love the artwork and the stories about influential people and how they got to that point. I also love The Queen. So I was very excited for this.

This book gave a good overview of the Queens life. It ends at her Platinum Jubilee, so no need to be worried about any sad parts.

I like how it started from when she was a little girl, and before her father became king.

The only thing is I wish it had included some more about what the Queen did during her reign. It seemed to glaze over that part for me.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures. This cute little book is about Queen Elizabeth, the UK's longest-serving monarch and, probably, the most loved one. I was incredibly sad to hear the news of her death. She was an icon and she definitely set a unique and important example. Queen Elizabeth spent all her life serving her people, putting always them first, and that is surely admirable. She made history, she is history.

Thank you so much Netgalley for the ARC!

Queen Elizabeth is a well-known face all around the world who had massive contribution in past decade. Since I've watched every post related to Her Majesty after her demise, I didn't discover any facts that I didn't already know. However, considering that it's mainly written for young stars, it's an adorable book with pretty illustrations and a great resource to introduce future generations to an important personality of the history.

First of all, thank you so much to Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and Netgalley to provide this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As always the drawings in this series are so cute and beautiful and the explanations are interesting while being age appropriate. My only minus on this specific book is that I have my own ideas and biases about monarchy and I know that it's very complex to address it in a children's book while also taking into account the point of the book.
Nevertheless, it's a world personality of the 20th and 21st Centuries you can't skip due to her relevance and I still very much appreciate the book as a whole.

Informative and fun way for the younger generation to remember England's longest-reigning monarch who recently passed away. She had a long and interested life and will be studies by historians for centuries. I know it's an upbeat children's book, but I think you still have to be careful about being overly optimistic about what was colonization. Other than that, I adore this series!

This is a sweet and charming book for children, but it seems surprisingly low on content. Well, maybe that's just me! The illustrations are great, utilising a lovely retro colour palette, and they're full of verve. However, as with the King Charles book in the series, I found reading this book a very melancholic experience; inevitable, I suppose, since it's not yet been 18 months since the Queen's death.

I had requested this edition even before her passing away. Her commitment, dedication and discipline to the role that was put upon her from such a young age was admirable. I feel a bit sad that we won’t see any real life Queen anymore for a while (not in my lifetime).

This charming addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series focuses on Queen Elizabeth II, and it was prepared for publication prior to her death. The book shares about her childhood, her experiences during World War II, and her long reign. The illustrations are both cute and appropriately detailed, giving a sense of historic fashions and technology.

Best of all, the book shares a strong message about the importance of serving others. Instead of glamorizing Queen Elizabeth's position, the book shows that she had to make a lot of personal sacrifices to be queen. Her reign wasn't about satisfying her personal desires or making a name for herself, but about doing what her people needed.

I have two critiques of this book. One is simply that the title is incorrect, since it should name the subject as Queen Elizabeth II. This will become a problem if the series ever covers the original Queen Elizabeth. My bigger concern is that the author never mentions Queen Elizabeth's faith. This is a very common issue in mainstream biographies, but I found it especially egregious here, since Queen Elizabeth was a devout Christian who frequently spoke about her faith in public addresses. She viewed her faith as central to who she was, and it's disrespectful for a biographer to decide that this is unimportant.

This problem is significant enough that I'm dropping a star, especially since it would have been so easy for the author to mention the Queen's faith while talking about her legacy of service. If someone is interested in a picture book biography that does mention the role of Christianity in the Queen's life, I would recommend Queen Elizabeth II: The Queen Who Choose To Serve, a recent release from a Christian publisher. However, a book should not have to come from a faith-based publisher to mention someone's deepest beliefs and values.

I love this book and the entire series consisting of 110 wonderful books for readers ages 4-7. Queen Elizabeth ll was a much beloved queen whose reign lasted 70 years. She was Britain's longest-reigning monarch. She became queen when she was young and took her title and duties very seriously. She was not the typical queen or princess found in fairytales but had to give up many desires and personal aspirations to serve her subjects. She pledged to dedicate her whole life, however long it would be, for the good of others and she faithfully fulfilled that vow.

Queen Elizabeth ll loved corgis dogs and horses and dreamed of living on a farm. Little did she expect that should be a reigning queen living in a grand palace all the rest of her life. In 1952, she was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom. Sadly she passed away on September 8, 2022 and the entire world mourned her death. Two of her corgis dogs and one of her horses attended her state funeral.

The whimsical, quirky illustrations are wonderful and the author has included extra facts at the back of book including a biographical timeline and historical photographs of Her Highness.
