Lean into your wicked side in this full-color graphic novel series about a middle-school super villain (in training) who must choose between saving his town and doing the most horrific thing of all--teaming up with the good guys.

Hi! My name is Steve L. McEvil, and I am THE GREATEST SUPERVILLAIN IN THE WORLD! Or…I will be. It’s hard to take over the planet when you still have a bedtime.

Right now, my grandpa Tiberius McEvil is teaching me how to pull off my nefarious schemes. Though lately someone has been doing the job for me. These weird stones have appeared in town. Professor Stinger won’t stop droning on about wormholes. And no one is more villainous than my new neighbor Vic Turry. That guy is just so…NICE! Barf. Even Sierra, who rarely looks up from her geology books, is impressed by his good guy routine. But I’ll show them all. No one can outsmart Steve L. McEvil! (Yeah, yeah, I know it rhymes.)

This was fun! It starts slow but gets better as it builds momentum.

There was a lot of extra dialogue, sometimes with whole pages packed with panels. Those could have been condensed. But there are some solid jokes too.

The characters are fun. The death robot turned nanny is funny. The retired supervillain grandpa steals every scene he's in. I do wish Steve L. McEvil had better plans and was a little more active. He wants to be a supervillain but doesn't really put much thought into his plots. If he's grown up his whole life scheming like this, he should be a bit better at it. Anyway, my kid loved it and we had a great time reading it together.

It was a little dorky at times but became better. Loved the cat, too, despite its drawn avatar being not very flattering to cats.

Steve L. McEvil is going to be the world's great supervillain because that's the family legacy, but he's distracted by his crush on Sierra and the new kid Vic Turry, who's always interrupting and foiling Steve's plans. All 3 are put together for a school project and decide to figure out what's going on with the rocks that keep appearing in town. It's goofy, especially his grandfather, who's "retired" from being a supervillain. This felt like a book that only kids can enjoy (a lot of fart jokes), and that's not me. He's like a cross from Dexter from Dexter's Lab and Jimmy Neutron. For kids who like superheroes.

Too many small panels and small text made this tedious compared to its peers, which is the wrong pacing for humor. Also, this falls into the trap of having the villain protagonist being someone who whines a lot, which does not make for an endearing read.

Steve L. McEvil is an aspiring supervillain like his Grandpa. But mostly he simps over Sierra, a girl in his class, and gets annoyed at the goody-two-shoes new kid Vic Turry. The three if them are put on a science project together and investigate the strange standing stones which have been appearing in the park. Also, Steve needs new glasses.

Super fun graphic novel featuring a young supervillain, his family and friends. He is smitten by a girl in his class, discovers he has an arch-enemy, and tries his very hardest to be the best by being the worst.
Love the style, with facial expressions and postures somewhat reminiscent of Burke Breathed's characters. Will definitely read more by this artist!

This only has 3.9 stars on Goodreads? Why??? This is funny! I laughed out loud. I would have loved this as a kid, and I enjoyed it as an adult. Looking forward to reading book 2.

Overview

I got a lot of different vibes from this book when I first saw it. There definitely feels like there’s an element of Captain Underpants, to some extent, but it also gave me that nostalgic feel for shows like Dexter’s Lab. It also felt a little like Rick and Morty for kids, and since my household loves that show, I was definitely intrigued!

Steve L. McEvil is a hilarious graphic novel about a supervillain-in-training whose attempts to do evil keep getting thwarted by his crush and the frustrating do-gooder new kid that just arrived at his school.

I ended up having a ton of fun with this book! It was a quick, easy read, perfect for struggling readers. The artwork! Oh my gosh. Y’all, this artwork is stunning. It’s so vivid and active and engaging. Turnbloom could illustrate how to heat a Hot Pocket and I’d still treat it like the literature it is. xD

My Thoughts

- I would just like to start by saying that this art style is so freaking cute that I couldn’t resist picking this book up, and I was not disappointed. I tend to be sort of picky about the type of illustration styles I enjoy and gravitate towards. Why? Because I’m extra. I dunno, what do you want from me? Usually, I know right away whether an art style is going to work for me personally or not. I absolutely love Turnbloom’s art style. I find it extremely charming, dynamic, and engaging. It’s a really interesting mix of cartoony and detailed. Perfect for a story about a supervillain! It’s every bit as quirky and charming as the story itself.

- Meet the McEvils, who come from a long line of successful supervillains. Well . . . sort of. See, Steve L. McEvil’s grandfather, Tiberius McEvil, is well known, even though he claims he has now retired from supervillainy. Steve plans to follow in his grandfather’s footprints and lead a life of supervillainy himself . . . even if, technically, most of his evil plans go awry. It’s the intent that counts, right?!

Something went a bit wrong with Steve’s father, though, who veered off the path of villainy to become . . . an artist. In particular, a cartoonist. Might Turnbloom have been inserting some of his own despair and experience in Steve’s father’s struggles with his cartoons? Perhaps. In any case, it’s funny!

In any case, Steve has a lot to live up to! I mean from his grandfather, of course, not his father, who is a little bit the black sheep of the family (though, bless his heart, he’s following his dream and doing his best).

- Like any good supervillain, Steve L. McEvil has stumbled upon his very first archnemesis . . . who keeps insisting that they’re friends? Weird. Obviously, this is some conniving master plan. Steve knows right away that he’s not going to like the new kid, Vic Turry. Not only is Vic a hopeless do-gooder who’s compelled to do the right thing, but he also immediately becomes best friends with Sierra, who Steve definitely does not have a crush on. Obviously, Vic has basically just declared war. Despite his (extremely annoying) insistence that he and Steve are good friends.

There’s obviously something weird about Vic Turry. I mean, other than being the do-gooder that he is, of course. Or the way he somehow, inexplicably keeps tricking Steve into doing almost hero-esque things. Obviously, he’s a horrible influence that needs to be dealt with.

- Steve L. McEvil is surrounded by a rather interesting squad, from his archnemesis to his crush to his death bot, who is slightly malfunctioning thanks to his nosy mother who insists that children’s toys shouldn’t be able to destroy people. Silly parents. It may come as no surprise at all that all the characters in this are basically larger than life. I mean, they have to keep up with Steve and the rest of the McEvils, right? I had an absolute blast with this squad, and I can’t wait to go on more adventures with them. Not only are they just plain funny, but they play off each other really well and work well together. Even if Steve is actively plotting how to get rid of Vic. I mean, does that not just scream best friends forever?!

- What I really enjoyed about Steve L. McEvil is that he can still go either way. While he says he’s 100% dedicated to supervillainy, he’s still a kid and still finding his own way in life. Oh, sure, he says he’s 100% committed to villainy and following in his grandfather’s footsteps . . . but then he accidentally messes up and does something good. I mean, I guess all villains experience some bumps in the road now and then, right? In the age of antiheroes and gray characters, there’s still plenty of time for Steve to decide where on the spectrum of good and evil he’ll eventually fall. In the meantime, though, what ensues is absolutely hilarious, because being a supervillain-in-training isn’t easy, as he’s finding out.

RATING: 4 STARS

Steve L. McEvil by Lucas Turnbloom is perfect for those looking for a graphic novel that’s reminiscent of Despicable Me, Dexter’s Laboratory, or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It’s a story filled with adventure, mischievous plans and lots of humor that’s sure to delight young readers around the world.

The art style for this graphic novel is awesome. I absolutely love the way things were organized, and how Mr. Turnbloom captured the character’s emotions in each panel. I primarily read much longer traditional fantasy novels, so I think the use of chapter dividers helped me with the transition in styles. In the past, some of the graphic novels I’ve read have been plagued by poor use of humorous moments and lack of character building in an attempt to fit as much into the page as possible, but that was never an issue with this book.

I have a couple of favorite quotes from the book, but my favorite that doesn’t pose any spoiler risk is this: “It’s kind of hard to take over the world when you still have a bedtime.” There’s also a moment when I let out an amused snicker because Steve asks his mother, “Do henchmen count as friends?” It’s always entertaining to me when the plans of budding evil geniuses are foiled by things like getting grounded, unhelpful parents who ban the presence of death rays at the dinner table, and the presence of nosy “do-gooders” in their life.

One thing I wanted to applaud (outside of the main content of the book) was the inclusion of drawing guides. If you want to learn how to draw Dorkus (I love that name for a robot) or create your own comic strip, the directions are laid out in easy-to-follow steps for you to do so. A perfect inclusion for readers who are budding comic book or graphic novel artists in their own right!

Altogether, this was an entertaining read. I can see it appealing to young fans of Artemis Fowl or the Despicable Me/Minions franchise. It’ll be hit or miss with adult readers though, as some adults may not find the childish jokes in the book as funny as I do (I’m well aware that I have a very childish sense of humor). After finishing this graphic novel, I’m excited to read the second installment in the Steve L. McEvil storyline as well as whatever Lucas Turnbloom may publish in the future.

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and the team at TBR and Beyond Tours for providing me with a complimentary review copy of the book. I appreciate the opportunity to read and review Steve L. McEvil immensely. Please note - I voluntarily read and reviewed the book. All opinions expressed in the review are my own, and not influenced in any way.

Oh man. One, I was SO excited to receive a review copy of this new graphic novel, Steve L. McEvil and two, I haven’t enjoyed a kid’s graphic novel this much in a LONG time. It checks all my boxes: the humor, the story, the illustrations. If you have a kiddo who loves graphic novels, pick this one up!!!

I want to start by inserting my soap box on kids' graphic novels. My daughter was a very, very early reader but it was so hard to find books that challenged her but had the pictures and story to keep her Interested. Enter the graphic novel. This was life changing for us as a family of readers and here we are all still enjoying them together. From the reluctant reader to the early reader, and everything in between, graphic novels are such great additions to anyone’s bookshelf no matter the age!

From the very beginning I loved this one. From Steve’s supervillain gramps to Dorkus the death robot, every single character made me giggle. And don’t get me started on the illustrations! Absolute perfection. There’s also the perfect amount of fart humor because let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be complete without it right? The addition of the Star Wars references made my nerd heart extremely happy. The plot flowed beautifully and now I’m fully invested in Steve L. McEvil’s story. I need more!

And the true test of a kids graphic novel? My six year old read the whole thing in one sitting. There is something about hearing the giggles of your sweet kiddo in the other room fully immersed in the story of a 6th grade villain, his inability to talk to the girl who’s caught his eye, and his new archenemy who just moved in across the street. It will make your heart swell. And don’t worry if your kiddo isn’t reading fully on their own yet, this is one parents and kiddos alike can enjoy reading together.

Read with you kids. It will change your life and theirs.

Steve L. McEvil is often in trouble at school and sees himself as quite the villain. He knows he comes by this distinction naturally due to his ancestry and his Gramps who is always on the watch for the FBI. But Steve also has an unrequited crush on Sierra Flores, which adds to his determination to make this HIS year. The arrival of a classmate, Vic Turry, who seems to have charmed Sierra as well as be such a do-gooder that Steve is stymied at every step, makes school increasingly uncomfortable for the boy. Eventually, all three youngsters end up being allied in a fierce battle against someone who is truly evil. With short chapters, colorful artwork, and plenty of fart jokes with fourth- and fifth-grade appeal, this graphic novel will have readers on the edge of their seats as they try to figure out how Steve will get out of yet another mess and save his town and classmates from destruction. They'll love Mrs. Cuddles, but be careful not to scratch her in that certain place, Steve's robot Dorkus, and the fact that Steve L. McEvil's name rhymes, a source of great amusement for many of his classmates. But once readers say that name aloud, I defy them to get the catchy rhyme out of their head. STEVE L. MCEVIL! STEVE L. MCEVIL! STEVE L. MCEVIL! See what I mean? Subplots involving his eye test and temporary glasses and his father's struggle to find just the right hook for his new newspaper comic strip add to the humor. If middle school were more like this, maybe fewer students would claim to hate it. I'll definitely be looking for the next book in this humorous series.

This graphic novel was really fun & entertaining and my 8 year old can’t wait to read it again! I loved the plot, the characters, and the color illustrations. I especially loved that the author put himself in the story. We are both excited to see what happens in the next book!

Quotes:
“I mean, it’s kind of hard taking over the world when you still have a bedtime.”

I think this sums up the story within the first few pages. Wanting to be a supervillain, but still being a kid can be a difficult process. But Steven is going to do what he can before he has to turn out the lights.

“Luke Skywalker NEVER said such HURTFUL things to C-3PO.”

While this book is aimed for kids, I love that I got this Star Wars reference and it made me giggle to myself. The relationship between a boy and his droid is very important!

“This is SO much funnier than freezing the teachers’ toilets.”

FARTS = Hilarity. End of discussion.

“How many ‘upstanding students’ own a freeze ray, Steven?”

Steven wants to be a villain, but it can be hard when the principal of your school catches you almost daily. He hasn’t quite figured it all out yet, but he has time.

“LOCAL MAN DRAWS CATS: Slow News Day Continues.”

This was the best quote. I loved the simplicity of it, but also the triumph for the cartoonist. Woohoo

Stand aside Gru there is a new Super Villain in our midst by the name of Steve L McEvil but first he needs to get through Middle School and on the way getting himself a reputation. Standing in the way of him becoming a Super Villain is a girl called Sierra and a new kid who Steve is unsure of. Together with his normal family apart from his evil Grandad Tiberius who rued the day his Son and heir - Steve's dad became a Cartoonist oh the horror of it all.

All these ingredients mixed together with Lucas's artwork you find yourself with a very funny Graphic Novel with so many Gags any Kid will love from the ages of 8 to 100. Not only that there death robot called Dorkus and a cat who hates their head being scratched but also a Mad Professor. There is so much to unpack and I don't really want to spoil anything but I will say I am 100% getting the next book in the series and carry on to see what happens next. For all these reasons I am giving this very funny graphic novel 4 stars

This was an awesome book. I like graphic novels, but I really loved this one. It was super easy to follow, the illustrations were spot on, and I have to say that I laughed out loud quite a few times.

What made me love this book even more was the author drawing a page or two about himself, explaining how he started drawing, and little tidbits about his life. That just added the perfect touch to round out this little gem!

My daughter has been circling this book like a vulture just waiting for me to finish. Now that I have she will waste no time in scooping it up and devouring it herself!

I quite enjoyed this. When I started it I was watching Futurama and I felt like there was some crossover there but that was probably just me. I love Steve's nana glasses. I thought he suited them. I also loved dorkus. "Luke Skywalker never said such hurtful things to C-3PO". There are fart jokes, Santa gets kidnapped (by an adult mind you!). Good clean fun. Looking forward to the next volume.

Not bad. It was entertaining through full of gross-out humor. Some jokes like the FBI and police wire jokes may go over kids’ heads. There’s an obvious twist that was teased throughout the comic, but it was still fun. Also, I enjoyed the robot a lot.
