About the author

Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in his home town of Independence, Missouri.

Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990′s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.

All the same, he refuses to change his nickname.

This was the way I read the first books of the Dresden series. I purchased the first 4 omnibus editions (put out by the Science Fiction Book Club) and read them back to back. While many find flaws in these books I find the writing, the character of Harry Dresden and "just simply" the enjoyment factor more than enough to push these over to a 5 star rating. These books are unique. Among fantasy and urban fantasy I think they stand alone.

Yes, there are folks who disagree and prefer other writers. That's "cool". We all have different tastes but for you who think you might share my opinion don't miss these.

This volume is made up of, Storm Front, Fool Moon, and Grave Peril. If you've read my individual reviews of these books you know I like them all.

Storm Front intros us to Harry Dresden the only commercially practicing wizard to be found in the phone book anywhere (at the time of the first book. if, like me you've read the series you know that now there is at least one other...but they don't live anywhere near Harry). This book left one of my friends here at good reads a bit frustrated in it's treatment of Harry's relations with another character. It can be, but it does work out later... This book was so good that I was sold on the character and the series right away. Of course I couldn't know here, but in my opinion as the series proceeds it actually improves.

The second book in this volume is Fool Moon. IF, repeat IF there is a weakest book in the series I find it to be this one. I still enjoyed it greatly, I still decided to go with a 5 star rating. So it's like steak or beer...or "the other example" usually given which I shall side step...even when it's not the best it's good. It only gets that said about it as it's part of a series of books that I find amazing as a whole.

In Grave Peril things actually take a very serious turn. We see a different side of harry and he faces more danger (believe it or not) and significantly more loss than before. This book sets up much of the plot that we will follow throughout the rest of the series (much of, but not nearly all).

The first omnibus edition containing the first 3 of what I think is THE BEST urban fantasy out there.

C'è solo una parola per descrivere questo libro: Ridicolo.
È stata una delle peggio letture che io abbia fatto. Di magia non ha assolutamente nulla. Sembra di leggere un giallo dove il protagonista deve risolvere il caso. Per le prime cento pagine mi viene detto che Dresden è un mago. Ok. Ma questa magia in che consiste? Non si sà...solo dopo molto scopro che la magia del protagonista è quella di scatenare forze contro i presunti demoni (dico o presunti perché nel libro compaiono poco e niente). Vado avanti e all' improvviso per evocare il fuoco viene detto: "Fuego!!!" e allora si sprigiona fuoco...siamo a livelli di lettura per bambini! Ripeto che la magia è totalmente assente nel libro.
Concludo sempre il libro che sto leggendo perché non mollo mai. Essendo tre racconti pensavo e speravo che la cosa si risollevasse almeno un pochino... niente da fare. Sempre peggio! Leggetelo ai vostri bambini per la buonanotte, forse (e dico forse) gradiranno.
PS: ricordate una cosa: Dresden ha una giacca che viene nominata praticamente ogni pagina. Molto importante. Ahahah

Trilogia apprezzata tantissimo. Non avrei mai creduto che la lettura di un Urban Fantasy potesse appassionarmi così tanto. Sarà che a tratti vi ho trovato un' ambientazione e un'ironia degne della miglior Buffy-l'Ammazzavampiri, serie TV che quando ero più giovincello avevo amato tantissimo. Nutro però ahimè pochissime speranze riguardo la traduzione degli altri libri della serie da parte di Mondadori. Super consigliato per chi cerca dell'intrattenimento allo stato puro, senza troppe pretese.

Oggi vi parlo del volume che raccoglie i primi tre libri della serie "The Dresden Files" di Jim Butcher, in ordine "Storm Front", "Fool Moon" e "Grave Peril". Pubblicati tra il 2000 e il 2001, hanno dato inizio a una delle saghe Urban Fantasy più iconiche.

Il teatro degli eventi è Chicago. Una Chicago violenta e corrotta, magica e affascinante, preda dei signori del crimine. Una Chicago in salsa Hard Boiled & Urban Fantasy dove le creature più oscure della notte penetrano nel nostro mondo e spadroneggiano: vampiri, lupi mannari, demoni, necromanti, stregoni, spettri, esseri fatati. A contrastare le forze delle tenebre troviamo lui, l'unico e inimitabile Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Mago e detective squattrinato, sarà l'unico esperto del paranormale ad affiancare la polizia nei casi in cui lo straordinario incontra il reale.

Il palcoscenico è affascinante, la miscela tra Hard Boiled e Urban Fantasy sgasa alla grande! Tuttavia, la storia di Jim Butcher si regge sulle spalle del protagonista. Harry Dresden è un personaggio mitico e leggendario, capace di bucare le pagine con il suo carisma e la sua personalità. Ironico, leale, testardo, determinato a raggiungere i suoi obiettivi, fragile, vittima di tormenti interiori, bravissimo a cacciarsi nei guai. Un eroe imperfetto che, come molti di noi, non si arrende mai nonostante le difficoltà cui va incontro. È stato delizioso seguirlo nelle sue peripezie tra fughe rocambolesche, battaglie magiche, indagini sanguinose, dialoghi irriverenti e qualche sano pestaggio.

La penna di Jim Butcher ha un taglio cinematografico, è scorrevole, esplosiva e senza fronzoli, fenomenale nel gestire con equilibrio un intreccio che unisce azione serrata, misteri ben congegnati, ottimi personaggi secondari e un umorismo che smorza anche le situazioni più disperate.
Prendete Gotham City, Sherlock Holmes, Underworld e Mago Merlino, fate un bel cocktail e otterrete "The Dresden Files". Lettura obbligatoria.

La migliore definizione è "hard boiled fantasy" e non c'è dubbio che sia così, nel bene e nel male. Nel male perché di fatto, ritrovando tutti i trope del genere, si torna a casa ma non è per forza una bella cosa. Diciamo che in diverse occasioni mi sono ritrovata a pensare che siano libri "vecchio stile" (e sì, hanno vent'anni, quindi non dovrebbero sembrarmi così vecchi), il che quasi mai in un'accezione positiva. Senza contare le volte che ero "e adesso succederà questo" cosa che poi puntualmente si avverava.
E non sono certa di aver apprezzato il modo dell'autore di giungere al climax e poi finire con un capitoletto stitico riassuntivo delle conseguenze.
L'originalità può stare nel modo di aver unito delle detective stories al fantasy, ma anche qui non usciamo molto dal seminato (fantasmi, vampiri, demoni, fae, ecc), quindi non aspettiamoci un rivolgimento dei canoni, nemmeno quelli dell'urba fantasy. C'è però da ammettere che la tradizione funziona nel modo di porre le cose. Personalmente ho molto apprezzato le varie distinzioni del licantropi (mi ha fatto molto ridere che poi l'autore si sia sentito in dovere, ormai che le aveva nominate, di includerle tutte nello stesso libro!)

Ciò nonostante, sono dei libri di assoluto intrattenimento, anche grazie allo stile e alla rottura della quarta parete. Il nostro protagonista è esattamente quello che ci si aspetterebbe da questo genere (solitario, sciatto, disordinato, dal passato triste, ma che cucca sempre un sacco di gnocca) e in qualche modo funziona: diciamo che può essere un'alternativa e una distrazione dal tipo di libri più moderni con protagonisti grigi se non direttamente malvagi, mentre qui abbiamo un eroe nella concezione più tradizionale del genere.
A mio parere sono migliori i comprimari, da Bob (questo tipo di personaggi-assistenti funziona sempre) a Murphy alle new entry Michael e Thomas, il loro modo di relazionarsi con il protagonista, sia per i momenti di commedia sia per le cose serie funziona.

A mio parere il migliore dei tre è il secondo, il primo si vede che è parecchio introduttivo, mentre il terzo l'ho trovato un po' too much (Bianca e Kravos nemici cattivi cattivi cattivi e la madrina... meh) ma comunque godibile per i personaggi summenzionati.

Essendomi spoilerata (perché sono una cattiva persona) certi avvenimenti futuri soprattutto legati ai personaggi femminili, non sono così presa da continuare la serie in inglese, aspetterò che arrivi (incrociando le dita) in Italia.

Ottimo inizio trilogia di una saga. Libri scorrevoli e godibili, narrati in prima persona. Il protagonista ha parecchi segreti e misteri nella sua storia personale da svelare. Spero che la CE finisca la saga.

2019 reread:
A lot of this hasn't aged well ... specifically Dresden's weird view of chivalry. That being said, there are some very strong moments for the female characters in this book despite the male gaze that permeates the page. See the agency in Susan's arc (especially in Grave Peril). While Harry has a martyr complex that inaccurately puts him as the "cause" of all the "bad things" that happen; a more astute reader can recognize the slight unreliability of the narrator and his viewpoint. If I hadn't already invested time and love for this series, though, I doubt that modern me would get through a lot of the looking down on women and justifying it as "chivalrous" that Dresden does.


2012 reread.

For those of you interested in a more individualistic take on the novels, read my reviews for the separate editions. The focus here is how they flow and create one of the most interesting, frustrating, exciting, etc. series I have had the pleasure to read.

The interesting thing is that, these three run the gamut of experience faced when dealing with the series. As an introduction to the character, Storm Front is lighter (despite the method of murder) and resembles the pulp genre a lot more than anything else. Sure, there's some urban magicking going on, but for the most part you're being introduced into the world of a game. At this point, the players are introductory and therefore hit each other with lighter, funnier weapons. What Storm Front (and Fool Moon) does especially well, though, is expose Harry Dresden's fatal flaw. The best part is, unless you are looking for it (in which case you see the neon lights flashing all over every instance of the flaw), the revelation is so wonderfully woven in that it's easy to ignore it.

Fool Moon is a transition novel. This time through, I found it a lot more interesting, exciting, fun (to a degree) and overall a blast. It is the more traditional mystery novel, with tons of red herrings and getting random bits and clues that are all out of order and then realizing that you saw the murderer before ... But the main purpose of Fool Moon is to transition to what is the first story arc of the series. And this is where I didn't pay attention. Because, the first story arc doesn't start with Storm Front (that's a larger story arc that probably won't be fully resolved until the final trilogy planned). The first story arc starts with Grave Peril.

And so we end up with our third story that roughly relates plays the cause/effect game with what was an insignificant event in Storm Front. We are introduced to more characters (at the end of all three we have met Harry, Bob, Murphy, Susan, the Alphas, Rudy/Rudolph, the three vampire clans with key members Don Ortega and Mavra and Thomas, Lea, Subconscious Harry, Michael, Father Forthill, Toot, and I'm forgetting another one or two) and then in the finale we are introduced to the first arc. And throughout the next few books, we end up with stories that play the cause/effect game with previous events (mostly with events from this book), watching Harry's power continue to grow (Grave Peril is the first book where Harry actually pulls off more magic than previously thought), and we have transition/filler books. Stories that sorta relate to the events but are used more to focus on other pieces of the puzzle. Sometimes that puzzle is the overarching story (that we only get glimpses of) and other times the puzzle piece seems to make its own image separate from the other stories ... but that may be due to how few Dresden novels there are currently (13 out of a proposed 20-23).

In any case, revisiting these books only further enhanced my enjoyment of the series. Seeing how things are going to move forward and catching all the little glimpses of where things originated. What's funny is, Jim Butcher spends so much time reminding us of the silly things (Blue Beetle's name, Karrin Murphy is described in all three books, the chivalry thought process ... which really annoys me coming back to it and isn't quite right anyway) that we don't see the more important parts forming for the story.

In short, this is yet one more argument that the Dresden Files are meant to be read in order for maximum understanding and enjoyment.

I have to be completely honest, if I judge books by their covers, The Dresden Files wouldn't interest me at all lmao. The 4 Omnibus Volumes published by Science Fiction Book Club Fantasy, however, have book covers much more appealing imo. So yeah, if I were to physically own books from this series, this edition is the most ideal... So sad they didn't continue publishing the remaining series (as of now.)

Very entertaining mix of fantasy and mystery noir. My main problem is it feels like Butcher has the need to up the stakes and the danger with each story, so by the end things get so hectic and it gets tiring. It made me want to keep reading, sure, but less because I just had to know what happens next and more just to see if things would ever finally start going in the good guys' favor. I'm interested in continuing to the next books, though I don't know if I can handle it if Butcher keeps piling on the risk.

Romanzo (romanzi) mediocre ad essere gentile.
Fondamentalmente parliamo di un romanzo investigativo con la magia, ma risulta mediocre sia come giallo che come fantasy (ed è mediocre in entrambe le cose).
Come giallo, è qualcosa di veramente banale. Forse è difficile da spiegare, ma diciamo che di solito in un giallo ci si ritrova un gruppo di personaggi, più o meno tutti insieme nello stesso momento, con l'investigatore che con il suo intuito o la sua attenzione coglie qualche dettaglio che gli permette di risolvere il caso. In questo romanzo il tutto si svolge in sequenza: A dice al protagonista di parlare con B, B gli dice di parlare con C e così via fin quando non arriva al colpevole... Anzi no, ad un certo punto il protagonista si ritrova ad un punto morto, ma per una coincidenza si ritrova davanti al "prossimo tizio con cui parlare" (il che, se non fosse abbastanza chiaro, a livello di scrittura è anche peggio della "sequenza ").

Come fantasy forse è anche peggio. In larga parte è semplicemente mediocre, "senza niente di magico", ma ci mette pure due o tre classici elementi fantasy che sono la banalità della banalità, come ad esempio il cattivo che non è niente più che la personificazione del male, ma in realtà riesce ad essere anche peggio visto che oltre "al classico" picchia anche la meglio e fa cose anche peggiori...
Non solo questo, la risoluzione della vicenda (ovvero il confronto col cattivo) risulta essere strapiena di cliché, di "fortuna che aiuta il protagonista" (insomma il plot armor) e volendo alla fine interviene anche il Deus ex machina di turno a salvare il protagonista.

Questa trilogia é fantastica!!!
Gli elementi più classici del noir/giallo investigativo si uniscono ad elementi sovrannaturali in modo fresco ed originale.

Il protagonista é Harry Dresden, lo trovate nell'elenco sotto la voce "Mago", ed é un'investigatore privato e consulente per la polizia che si occupa di quei casi inspiegabili che hanno a che fare con il sovrannaturale.

In questo omnibus, che racchiude i primi tre libri, seguiamo Dresden in tre casi rocamboleschi e stra interessanti che coinvolgono vampiri, lupi mannari, spiriti e demoni. Ogni caso è più appassionante del precedente.

La scrittura é leggera e scorrevole: non ho avvertito per niente la lunghezza del libro, complici anche i capitoli corti e il fatto che si chiudono sempre nel momento giusto lasciandoti la curiosità di voler leggere ancora e ancora.

Il protagonista é fantastico: autoironico, spigliato, irriverente e in più occasioni dà voce ai pensieri di noi lettori. Ha un passato travagliato e una personalità che si snoda attraverso i tre libri che lo rendono un personaggio molto alla mano e in cui ci si può rispecchiare.

I comprimari costituiscono un gruppo colorato di personaggi con caratteristiche uniche ed indimenticabili.

Un Urban Fantasy che non vi annoierà, perfetto per chi cerca un po' di mistero in compagnia di vampiri, licantropi, strani cavalieri, esseri fatati e teschi parlanti!

Questo libro raccoglie i primi tre titoli della serie urban fantasy con protagonista Harry Dresden, un mago nella Chicago dei giorni nostri. La trama ha una componente investigativa e paranormale molto forte, sembra quasi un noir. Ho letto da qualche parte la definizione hard boiled e i richiami ci sono tutti.

Quindi non prettamente il mio genere preferito (amo gli urban, meno i noir), ma comunque una storia dal costrutto interessante.

Ammetto che subito sono rimasta un pochino spiazzata dall’assenza delle spiegazioni del worldbuilding relativamente alla componente magica. Harry è un mago, molto potente, ma non ha una sua magia intrinseca, deve sempre utilizzale orpelli e incantesimi. Con questo particolare però sono riuscita ad apprezzare di più Harry, un gentiluomo dall’animo antico, con una buona dose di sfortuna e una dichiarata (ma non tanto accentuata) ombra sul suo essere. Harry, nonostante si professi non così puro, è un buono, dai sani principi e bisognoso di fare sempre la cosa giusta. Gli accenni al suo passato sono molti, ma non sono spiegati. Man mano viene dato qualche particolare, ma io ho patito un po’ questa assenza.

Il libro scorre bene, le avventure sono rocambolesche e il mistero da risolvere ogni libro interessante.

I think I read this much, possibly I read like 5 of these. I'm not exactly proud. The books aren't horrible, far from it, they are very readable. Good action scenes. Literary fast food. And I'm not exactly complaining. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, it is non-trivial to write books of this level. I would go further, this is rather good fast food, not the kind where you start hating yourself right after taking the first bite and where you continue eating out of desperate self hate. No, this is the kind where you don't hate yourself even after you are done, if you consumed in moderation.

I feel these books have no real depth. The characters and the stories are okay, not more than that. I truly despise the fact Harry can't freaking invent some magic to heat water, what is wrong with him ? Worse, why do I have to read the exact same explanation about this in every single book ? Things like that annoyed me, I actually had a list of these nit picks, but years have passed, and I already forgot most of them.

Questo libro è rimasto nella lista di lettura per un periodo di tempo inusuale: forse le sue 1109 pagine mi rendevano titubante. Ho voluto provare e mi sono reso conto di quanto le mie paure fossero infondate, anzi. E' molto difficile scrivere un testo avvincente, con un'ambientazione così cupa, e riuscire ad mantenere nel testo una vena di divertimento. L'ambientazione è geniale: il modo di oggi ma con la magia e che magia: vampiri, uomini lupo, teschi parlanti, driadi e demoni. Il protagonista è veramente azzeccatissimo e non ne trovavo uno che mi piacesse così tanto dal Kichaka del ciclo del Fabbricante di Universi o da Miles Vorkosigan del ciclo dei Vor. Spero vivamente Mondadori prosegua con la pubblicazione del ciclo.

This is the first three books of the Harry Dresden series. I had not gotten into reading Butcher's series for a while but a couple of years ago I read his Codex Alera series and I put the Dresden books in the "to read" stack. Each book was better than previous one and that was a good sign. The 3rd book in the series has a very personal reason that leads Dresden to take on some very nasty creatures.

Ugh. I went into this with such high hopes. The premise is interesting, aaaaaand then it just goes downhill. The thing that bothers me the most is that the descriptions of all the female characters (ALL) are horrible. Always a focus on breasts, butts, and/or thighs. And they're always either sexpots or "cute." Blech. Stab me in the brain with an ice pick. I'm pretty sure this Harry Dresden series is still going strong, so I REALLY hope the author improved on his female character development.

These short stories left me on the edge of my seat. Harry Dresden, wizard for hire, is a complex character with a twisting backstory and a weird cacophony of friends to guide him along his travels. I enjoyed reading these stories and can't wait to read more of them and travel along with Dresden, wizard for hire.

Dopo quasi un quarto di secolo Mondadori pubblica per la prima volta in Italia i primi tre romanzi della lunga saga hardboiled/horror The Dresden Files. Meglio tardi che mai. Speriamo che vengano tradotti anche gli altri romanzi entro il 2050 magari in un formato diverso dallo scomodissimo Bibbia Gutenberg della collana Oscar Draghi.
