An all-new original series featuring the art of viral sensation Joe Whale, AKA the Doodle Boy, and fan-favorite Eric Luper! Somewhere deep within the walk-in pantry at Belching Walrus Elementary lives an array of different foods that live in harmony. There are baskets of fruits and veggies, a cooler filled with chocolate milks and apple juices, and a freezer for ice-creams and yet-to-be-nuked chicken fingers. One day, the Supplies from the Principal's office show up and insist on sharing the coolness of the cooler. Their ruler is a ruler (pun intended) named Baron von Lineal. The Baron argues that they work harder than anyone in Belching Walrus Elementary while food just sits around. As such, the residents of the pantry have no choice but to open their doors. Anyhow, there's plenty of room in the cooler for everyone, right? Wrong! The Baron and his cohorts take over the pantry in no time! To free their fellow food, it's up to three young heroes Slice, Scoop, and Totz to venture out of the pantry and foil the Baron's plan for good. It's an epic, hilarious story kids will love. This fun, imaginative series will spur the creativity of kids worldwide. Highly illustrated with big black-and-white pictures from Joey on every page, this series will be sure to resonate with kids worldwide!
Awkward text, storyline, and art off putting. Yet, offbeat humor could be right for the right seven up reader. However, amount of text, though mostly short chapters, might put off a reluctant reader. I usually enjoy Luper, but this time it was off.
Edit: I was almost to the end when I wrote my review (had not finished). When I finally did finish, my rating went to a 1.5, as the ending was better than the rest. But still, did not save it for me.
Galen read this whole thing to us! Feb 28-Mar 8, 2023.
He says it was very good and exciting. I’m so glad he’s found something that got him into reading finally; before it was just something he had to do, this he wanted to read.
This is my FAVORITE third grade book!! She’s basically game of thrones, third grade edition, there’s literally a “red wedding” in the middle where some big characters die. I definitely like this book more than my kids, I got NO reaction when Glizzy(fav character) basically resurrects to save the day during the office supplies vs. cafeteria food final battle! I kept asking throughout if they liked it and basically just bullied them into being bandwagoners!!!
This is a quirky and fun book for children where everything in a school comes alive and one band of heroes have to save the day. The artwork throughout is incredible and really brings the story to life. Please read my full review here: https://mrssmithisreading.blogspot.co...
First in this series about foods that come to life after hours in an elementary school. Readers meet several foods who work together to defeat the domineering office supplies. Together with other rooms' items, they succeed in defeating the Baron and his minions. Plenty of humor for middle grade readers.
This book was incredibly silly. From my adult perspective, it didn’t make any sense and was just too much all around. Perhaps a kid who it is aimed at would enjoy it, but I personally thought it was ridiculous. And not a good ridiculous.
The drawings were pretty cool, which is why I give it the second star.
I was hoping to read this as a read aloud to my 2nd graders, but I think a lot of the funny puns that make the book would be over their heads. Loved the characters, the message of teamwork, and the playful puns.
This is a funny story of what happens when the stuff in our schools comes alive! The stationery tries to take over, led by the ruler, but everyone else has to try to overpower him and his stapler crew! This properly made me cackle at times - some gorgeous puns!
A silly yet fun book about things coming to life in schools once everybody leaves. I read this with my 6 year old son. He says 5 stars, I say 3. Split the difference.
I read this with my nephew, and it started off so hilarious and fun. It definitely tapered off as the story continued, but I still had a lot of fun reading it overall.
As an adult reading this to my child, my brain hurt. Many times my mouth was moving but my brain was not following the conversations being had. It’s written in a way that is wonky to keep up with.
I received an ARC of this book via the publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.
Game of Scones is the first book in a new series from illustrator “The Doodle Boy” Joe Whale and Eric Luper. Here readers are introduced to the food in the cafeteria at Belching Walrus Elementary. The story follows Slice (pizza), Scoop (ice cream), and Totz (a tater tot) as they battle for independence from the Main Office, specifically Baron Von Lineal (a ruler). Creativity and imagination abound in this story, filled with all the things from school and what they get up to when the students are away.
Final Thoughts:Game of Scones is a fun, creative story that will engage older readers and leave them wondering what happens at school when they aren’t there.
