This is the third book we have read by Lucy Strange. Having rated both The Secret of Nightingale Wood and Our Castle by the Sea both 4 stars, I was very excited to find this recently published third book, set in an area of the Lake District we know well.
This story has many elements that we love, a couple of orphans, a mystery, a stately home complete with a swindling villain, some great animal characters, a backdrop of the Lakes, a burial island, and a gothic mansion with hidden rooms and secret panels.
Having enjoyed the first book enough to rate 4 stars, and enjoying the second even more I thought this third book might be a 5 star for me. It didn’t quite make it although it was the best of the three yet. My only downside was that it was perhaps a little too mellow dramatic, the ending perhaps too predictable or far fetched and the ghost element didn’t seem quite magical enough for me. Maybe too many other stories were drawn upon for this, in places it felt like too much of a medley. Although Clarence made a great character for a read aloud, he did seem to be a one dimensional baddie, a stereotype and a ‘boo hiss’ villain that would have perhaps been better placed in a pantomime.
There were many very enjoyable elements for me, as with all three books by this author, I appreciate the portrayal of families with secrets and problems, families kept apart in some way, I enjoyed the mystery of the story and loved the twist towards the end. Just when we thought we knew something there was a reveal that made sense and made parts of the story fall into place.
This was an enjoyable fast paced adventure with some good characters, I am looking forward to seeing what this author does next.

The fact there is a character with the surname of Hetherington DOES NOT give me any bias to my feelings towards this book, okay?! (well maybe a little, but this was 5 STARS regardless!!)
This is a beautifully written and atmospheric book set in 1899 in the Lake District (an area I have been to and love and I don't live too far away from it myself). The gorgeous descriptive writing style really embodied the landscapes and overall tone of the area. Add in the fact this is historical and you get this perfect package of a middle grade.
I love that even though this does include a very ghostly presence, it doesn't overwhelm the story and make it unbelievable. The ghost element of this only enhances and informs the main narrative so that it made sense, and I loved the twists and turns we got from the family history and drama that unfolds by the end.
Agatha is a truly formidable heroine and I loved reading about her journey. I felt so bad for her to begin with as her life is turned upside down after she is thrown out of her family home by her cruel cousin Clarence, and forced to reside in a small cottage with a man who claims to be her father. Seeing her struggle and adapt to totally new circumstances was interesting and entertaining to read. And I hate Clarence with a vengeance!!

This is the third book I've read by Lucy Strange and she just seems to get better with every read. A chilling and beautifully written gothic novel set in 1899 in the Lake District of England. The characters are memorable and there is a dastardly villain who adds to the interest of the story. This is a great book for a cold winter night.

I really am growing fonder and fonder of Lucy Strange's books and writing.
This is my second book by the author and I'll be picking up my third soon enough.
I really enjoyed this story, it's about true love, hate, regret, lies, secrets, greed, vengeance, friendship and the meaning of life.
Little Agatha grew up in a priviliged estate with the 29th earl and countess, she was well fed, well educated and dressed in the finest silks and attires, but was she loved? Was she cherished?
The earl dies, and her cousin shows up and kicks her out of her home pretexting she has to go and live with her father, a goose farm owner. As the story unfolds, I got to see how unfair society and its rules were to women, no inheritance, always depending on someone else for living.
Little Agatha resists her fate and decides to fight back, but the weight of all those secrets is too much for a twelve years old little shoulders, and here come the role of friendship in the form of a redheaded, one-side dimpled boy. We all need a soul to rely on when life gets too much.
Through forty-six short chapters, I saw Agatha grow and change, sometimes I was so frustrated with her decisions I wanted to slap her but then I remembered, she's only twelve, and shouldn't be going through this hell. This gave me something to think about, as we, "know it all grown ups", make what we think are wise decisions, we tend to forget that the little ones are their own person, with feelings and all, and might be severely affected by how stupid we can be.

Lucy Strange megint csak egy végtelenül izgalmas sztorival állt elő, amely ráadásul amolyan kapudrogként is szolgálhat a gótikus irodalomhoz. Van benne hatalmas titokzatos folyosókkal teli kastély, régi családi legendák és elveszett ékszerek, soha ki nem mondott titkok és azokat elfedni meg elfeledni próbáló felnőttek. A helyszín az angliai Tóvidék az előző évszázad kezdetén, ahol mocsarak, tavak és temetőszigetek vannak sötét kriptákkal meg titokzatos faragásokkal. Szóval nagyon hozza a Brontë nővérek hangulatát 😊 (lásd pl. ablakban feltűnő sápadt arc). S bár felnőtt olvasóként mindezeket a motívumokat ismerősnek találtam (jogos örökségéből kiforgatott főszereplő, jómódból szegénységbe taszítás, telhetetlen gonosz rokon, kegytelen idő és szellemjárás stb.), Lucy Atrange mégis egy teljesen új történetet szőtt ami a saját jogán izgalmas és olvasmányos. Engem is teljesen magával ragadott, majdnem egy huzamban olvastam el, mert a titkok mellett vannak benne csavarok és kisebb-nagyobb kalandok is.

Wat een emotioneel, spannend en mooi einde. Ik ben er echt even sprakeloos van geweest.
Het boek begon voor mij té snel. Het begon midden in het verhaal. Ik had nog te weinig verbinding met de karakters om er iets van te kunnen ‘voelen’. Later trok dit helemaal bij en werd ik meegezogen in het verhaal. Vooral het einde was enorm spannend.
Het boek is prachtig geschreven en heeft mij op meerdere vlakken weten te raken. Ik ben nieuwsgierig naar de andere boeken van Lucy Strange!

I loved this: beautiful, lyrical writing and a gently clever plot which moves with a swing. Its ultimate twist is obvious and predictable, but that’s no bad thing in a children’s book; Strange is to be commended for creating a great story which allows the reader to consider the impact of loss and betrayal - and how you find the strength to make new beginnings.
I must admit I had not been impressed by ‘Our Castle By The Sea’ - I found the prose style in that book too bald and simplistic to be enjoyable. However, ‘The Ghost of Gosswater’ in in a completely different literary league. I read a free preview chapter and thought things boded much better - bought the book and wasn’t disappointed by a single page! Strange’s use of language is painterly here: she genuinely transports you to another world. Strong overtones of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and the clear impact of Jane Eyre, simply strengthen the story overall.

Kevésbé tetszett, mint A világítótorony legendája, bár sok tekintetben hasonlított rá. Ismét víz mellett játszódik játszódik a történet, de ezúttal a – hangulatosan lefestett – tóvidéken. Bár temető és szellem is szerepelt benne, én keveselltem a misztikumot, az izgalmat és a borzongást. Igaz, emberi gonoszságban nem volt hiány, és a főszereplő is talpraesettnek bizonyult. Kicsit romantikusabb volt, mint amire számítottam, ezért nem lett nálam ötös.

Het iLeesclub boek voor de maand april was "De geest en het meisje". Ik had geluk dat hij op Kobo Plus staat, want hierdoor kon ik weer gezellig mee doen! Hieronder lees je mijn ervaring over "De geest en het meisje".

Dit boek speelt zich af in 1899. Het begint heel triest, de graaf van Gosswater komt namelijk te overlijden. Lady Agatha, oftewel Aggie, ziet hierdoor haar hele leven uit elkaar spatten. Wat moet ze nu, nu haar vader overleden is.
Haar wrede neef Clarence zet haar uit haar ouderlijke huis. Want wat blijkt, Aggie is geadopteerd en is dus helemaal niet de echte dochter van de graaf! Aggie was al gebroken door het overlijden van haar vader, maar nu ze weet dat haar vader, haar vader niet is, breekt haar wereld nog weer verder uit elkaar.
Ze komt te wonen bij een vreemdeling die beweert haar echte vader te zijn. Hij woont in een niet echt luxeus huisje, met een ganzenboerderij. Waar is ze nu toch beland...
Rond de oevers van Gosswater zwerft er ook nog eens een rusteloze geest rond. Steeds vaker komt Aggie haar tegen en hoe meer Aggie op avontuur gaat om antwoorden te krijgen, hoe belangrijker deze geest lijkt te worden. Maar heeft ze ook daadwerkelijk iets met Aggies afkomst te maken?

Dit boek is heerlijk myserieus! Al vanaf het begin werd ik het verhaal in gezogen en wilde ik graag weten wie Aggie is en wat haar allemaal te doen staat.
Aggie is een personage waar je heel gemakkelijk een band mee krijgt en waarvan je graag wilt weten hoe haar verdere leven zal lopen en wat ze allemaal voor de kiezen krijgt. Dit boek maakt dit dan ook meer dan goed, aangezien het spannend en mysterieus blijft tot het einde.
Ik wist dan ook absoluut niet waar het verhaal naar toe zou gaan en het einde heeft mij enorm verrast, op een positieve manier. Het verhaal is knap in elkaar gezet en aan het einde komt het allemaal heel mooi bij elkaar.
De schrijfstijl van Lucy vind ik ook echt heerlijk! Het is heel makkelijk om je voor te stellen hoe Aggies wereld eruit ziet. Hierdoor waan je je ook daadwerkelijk in 1899. Ik merkte met name aan hoe de omgeving en vervoersmiddelen beschreven werd, dat we ons in het verleden bevinden. Erg mooi gedaan!
De iLeesclub was daarnaast ook weer erg gezellig met leuke vragen en foto-opdrachten! Ik kijk er naar uit om in mei ook weer mee te doen.

De vormgeving van dit boek spreekt mij aan. Ik vind de cover aantrekkelijk omdat er veel op te zien is maar eigenlijk wordt er niets duidelijk verklapt over het inhoudelijke verhaal dus de verrassing blijft. Het kleurgebruik van de cover is niet standaard met de verschillende blauw en bruinrode tinten waardoor het boek juist in het oog springt. De klimopranken, die subtiel op de voorzijde te vinden zijn, dragen verder bij aan de mooie vormgeving in het boek. Ze zijn te vinden bij de start van elk hoofdstuk. Het geestmeisje in de linkeronderhoek op de voorzijde valt op en geeft je mede daardoor de indruk dat het wellicht weleens griezelig kan worden. Voor mij genoeg samen met de flaptekst om het boek te willen lezen.
“Als je ervoor kiest alleen te zijn, kan de kilte van anderen je niet raken, dat heb ik gaandeweg geleerd.”
Doordat het verhaal begint in december 1899 in Engelland stap je als het ware een oude wereld binnen die niet vergelijkbaar is met de huidige tijd qua technologie en dergelijke. Geschiedkundig is het verhaal daarom interessant omdat men toen heel anders leefde op zowel jonge als oudere leeftijd en dat krijg je al lezende goed mee. De sfeer voelt hierdoor ook algauw wat mysterieus en geeft de lezer de ruimte om weg te zakken en mee te gaan in het verhaal van Aggie.
“Verdriet is een ingewikkeld gevoel, vind ik. Misschien is het oprechter als het het voetspoor van liefde volgt, en niet in het kielzog van kille onverschilligheid drijft.”
De schrijfstijl vind ik bijzonder prettig lezen. Geen simplistische, kort door de bocht, bewoording maar volle zinnen die passen bij de tijdsgeest waarin hoofdpersonage Aggie leeft. Het draagt op die manier automatisch bij aan sfeerversterking waar ik het net over had en toch leest het boek gewoon vlot en zonder moeite. Lucy Strange heeft al eerder verhalen geschreven die ik nog niet gelezen heb maar wel van plan ben te gaan lezen nu ik ‘De geest en het meisje’ gelezen heb. Ze schrijft op een fijnzinnige manier waardoor ik me gemakkelijk voor kan stellen hoe de omgeving eruit ziet waarin alles gebeurd en waarin de hoofdpersonages zich voortbewegen.
“En dan geeft het schaap antwoord.”
Naast alles wat moeilijk is voor Aggie, waar ze van leert en verder van ontwikkeld in haar persoonlijkheid, gebeuren er ook leuke dingen waardoor haar verhaal niet alleen serieus is maar ook grappig. Haar mede personages zijn tevens interessant om verder te leren kennen. Samen vormen ze een verzameling karakters die niet zouden misstaan in een Engelse televisieserie. Voor de ene voel je gemakkelijk sympathie en leef je mee, van de andere ren je zelf net zo hard weg als Agatha. Griezelen en nieuwsgierigheid gaan hand in hand in dit verhaal want niets is zoals het in de eerste instantie lijkt te zijn.

Dit boek is naar mijn idee een intelligent jeugdverhaal wat ik vroeger als kind zijnde graag gelezen had en zeker ook zelf uitgekozen had. Het is een mooi verhaal vol goede, leerzame levenslessen. Spannend en verrassend en daardoor ook zeker boeiend en leuk om te lezen. Het boek eindigt in een ietwat te zoetsappig eind goed, al goed voor mijn smaak maar ik heb zeker genoten van dit bijzondere verhaal.

Dit boek is naar mijn idee een intelligent jeugdverhaal wat ik vroeger als kind zijnde graag gelezen had en zeker ook zelf uitgekozen had. Het is een mooi verhaal vol goede, leerzame levenslessen. Spannend en verrassend en daardoor ook zeker boeiend en leuk om te lezen. Het boek eindigt in een ietwat te zoetsappig eind goed, al goed voor mijn smaak maar ik heb zeker genoten van dit bijzondere verhaal.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this! This book is perfect for the spooky season. Creepy atmosphere, lots of tension and one of the scariest antagonists I've read in a while - middle grade or otherwise.
The mystery is predictable, but I found myself not minding all that much because a) I'm way older than the intended target audience, and b) the story was so engaging.
I really enjoyed the side characters as well as the mc. But I just LOVE that Agatha is not your typical heroine who naturally has the moral high ground. She's willful, she's spoiled and entitled in a way you might expect a girl of her upbringing to be, and she struggles with her more vindictive impulses. It felt so refreshing to me!
If you're looking for a spooky read with a grippingc story and great character development, I'd say give this one a go!

3.5 rounded up because this is my third book by Lucy Strange, I love her writing, and it just keeps getting better. I quite enjoyed this atmospheric novel set in 1899 in the Lake District England. I really liked Agatha and her growth.

Sort of a gothic novel, it was a fascinating ghost story. I loved how it all played out, and I love a good found family tale. I loved how Aggie's brain talked to her.

Twelve-year-old Lady Agatha Asquith has led a pampered life, albeit with cold-ish parents of the melancholy sort. Her father is the earl and when he passes away, Agatha's unpleasant cousin, Clarence, moves in to claim Gosswater Hall as his own. He casts Agaatha out of her home and into the hands of a man who claims to be her real father—and is known as a thief. Thus begins Agatha's quest for her true identity.
This is an incredibly charming story that both children and adults can enjoy. Agatha is a fighter, Clarence is a remarkable villain who doesn't hold back, and many other lively and interesting characters occupy the historic setting. In addition, the story offers plenty of action, twists, and turns to keep readers happy. Did I mention that the writing is exquisite? Simply put, you'll love this book.

I'm sorry but this was just badly done...
The main protagonist was insufferable, which I understand because of where she comes from, and then all of a sudden, with no reason, she becomes independant, nice and capable of doing things by herself. There is no kind of progression, i has never been hinted at before. Everything happens off page and it almost feels like there are 3 different main characters honestly...
The plot is almost none existant and so uninteresting up until over 50% and, if I have to go through 150+ pages for a plot to begin I just can't... The pacing also didn't feel right honestly.
The fantasy element doesn't happen until halfway through and if the fantastical and scary things are nice, they didn't quite make up for the rest...

Oh my. I have no words for how much I loved this book. I. LOVE. this. book!
It is entirely different from her previous books but just as wonderful. The audiobook was amazing, too.

This spooky middle-grade novel stands out because of its interesting and unpredictable riches-to-rags plot. Set in 1899, the story opens with twelve-year-old Lady Agatha Asquith’s world falling apart after her father, the Earl of Gosswater, dies. Cruel cousin Clarence (who inherited everything) states that since Agatha’s not really an Asquith she must get out. Shocked, Agatha struggles to come to terms with this news as she’s abruptly moved in with her possible biological father, a poor goose farmer and (maybe) thief. Though Agatha yearns to hear the truth from him, he’s closed-lipped.
At the Earl’s funeral on Skelter Island, Lady Agatha realizes there is no going back and decides to try embracing her new life, renaming herself Aggie. She soon makes her first-ever friend—Bryn, a boy who works on this cemetery island—but cannot find the words to tell him her real identity.
As Aggie tries unraveling her history, she begins seeing a female spirit. Is this her past self? The ingenious plot shows Aggie’s growth from pampered to strong-willed where she bravely takes charge, seeking answers and forging her path forward. Gosswater’s a place with harsh contrasts between the aristocrats and the peasants. In this a small community, the paths people live (determined mainly by their social status) differ dramatically.
Aggie and Bryn are very likable characters and their bumpy road as friends feels truthful. Some of my favorite elements include the presence of geese throughout and the contradicting information that Gosswater is either named after the geese there or after the ghosts! Susan the goose is quite a character, playing a significant role in this thrilling story.
Whether it’s a real ghost haunting Aggie or merely her past, this fascinating story about family, friendship, and self-discovery is one that will keep you enthralled as you follow Aggie into the uncertain future filled with lies, secrets, and one charming goose!
