Is almost $2,000 a lot to drop on someone else’s dinner, just to be a big shot? Hell yeah! But what if nobody notices that you—one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in the world—picked up the tab?

In this meditation on celebrity, power, and a simple thank-you, Mindy Kaling takes the next charmed step in her path from Conan intern to mogul: picking up the entire tab for a famous A-lister. It’s an investment, right? He’ll be blown away by her class. They’ll be best friends forever. Forty thankless seconds later, who wouldn’t spiral into self-doubt, second-guessing, over-rationalizing, and anxious obsession?

Plus, bonus content! An up-close-and-personal look at what Mindy does all day, including “executive producing” and gift wrapping.

From the acclaimed writer, actor, director, producer, and New York Times bestselling author comes Nothing Like I Imagined. In these essays, Mindy Kaling shares the latest chapters of a multitasking life in Hollywood. Read or listen to them in a single setting. Either way, they’re pitch-perfect.

Mindy Kaling had the habit of paying for other people’s dinner. The strangers and most of the celebrities showed gratitude and told thank you to her for her generous gesture.

Mindy tells us the instance where one big celebrity didn’t even mind the grand gesture given by her. She was visiting the restaurant along with her parents, and the celebrity was hosting a large number of people for an expensive dinner. This created a lot of confusion. Mindy tells us the interesting events that happened after that.

My favorite three lines from this book.
“I don’t actually understand the meaning of generosity. It means giving to people and expecting nothing in return. It doesn’t mean giving to someone with the expectation, or even hope, that they will regale you with praise for being such a generous person.”

“Celebrities are usually the people most titillated by other celebrities.”

“Being a big shot means giving and not caring if anyone acknowledges you. The very expectation of appreciation disqualifies you from being a big shot.”

The bonus content showing the daily routine will provide you with a pleasant reading experience. This is the last book in this series. We can finish reading this series quickly as all the books are short, and each book is written in an engaging, funny manner.

Clever

I have read several of Ms Kaling’s books and enjoy her humor. For me this wasn’t her best but glad I read it. She’s a very funny lady.

We've been watching the Mindy Project (a rewatch for me, first time for my husband) so when I saw this series of six essays by Mindy Kaling it was an obvious download. The Kindle version is free to Amazon Prime members and after you download them you can access the audio free as well. Obviously I listened to this in audio read by the author - this one was a bit longer, about daily life as a producer, the weird navigation of being kind of famous and rich but not as much as some of the other people around you, etc.

This was probably the only one that annoyed me, a lot! That was until the last page, I did enjoy her character development and the realization of what she was doing was weird and reading about how her outlook changed.
The only downside is the fact that this could´ve been part of one book with essays instead of publishing it separately.

Mindy shares her story about loving to spend money on celebrities when they go out to eat. However, one celebrity did not thank her for spending money on them and Mindy was very frustrated. This book shares her journey from spoiling celebrities to donating her money to charities instead.

What a entertaining and fun essay. Mindy is a
Clever writer with a positive attitude and perspective.
I listened to the audio book, And it was fun to hear Mindy narrate it herself. I’m looking very forward to reading the rest of this series.

Nothing Like I Imagined

Since this is a collection of quick personal essays I’ve decided to review them all in one swoop anthology style.

Please Like Me (But Keep Away) - 4 Stars - This essay reviews the time when Mindy moved to LA to write for the office and had to find/make friends as an adult. A most daunting task indeed. She speaks of wanting a close group of girlfriends and even her experience in trying to join one and of how she somehow ended up with a male BFF. Making new friends as an adult is something I’ve yet to really be able to do though I will see my efforts have been less than minimal. I love my current tight knit friend group however I find being the only single, childless one to be alienating and I think it’s unfair to put more demands on their time than they already have but finding new people who I can demand spend time with is very difficult. I’ve said before that Mindy seems familiar and in this essay I see myself.

Kind of Hindu - 4.5 Stars - Something I’ve never considered about parenthood (because I haven’t had to) is religion. I’m sure as a member of a dominant religion I wouldn’t bat an eye at raising my child in a christian faith but what if said imaginary child had a father who was of a different faith. What would I do? So many questions that my mind starts to spin and I’ll save you the downward cycle but it’s an important responsibility. The story of her daughter’s Mundan ceremony is humorous from the outside but I’m sure traumatizing for both mama and daughter… and hair stylist. This is the kind of gem I’m happy she shared with the world. I feel like I learned something not only personal but cultural.

Help Is On the Way - 4 Stars - Admitting you need help is one of the hardest things to do as an adult. We make decisions and we feel like we should be able to handle the repercussions of these decisions. We follow the example our parents gave us and think we should be able to do it too. That is why Mindy struggles so hard with the decision of hiring a baby nurse. It’s nothing her mother would have done. It is nothing she was culturally raised to do but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of her life.

Searching for Coach Taylor - 4 Stars - In this essay we explore single parent pity and what it means to have a husband or partner. Mindy handles it with her trademark wit and grace but makes some other really great points about the things you give up or have to negotiate about too.

Once Upon a Time in Silver Lake - 3 Stars - A short, weird tale of a night out with her best friend BJ. I’m not sure what we are supposed to derive from the story. It a good party antidote though.

Big Shot - 4 Stars - Mindy shares a lesson she learned about generosity and expecting gratitude. She gives her readers endless curiosity over who “Max Davis” really is. She also shares a day in her life as a kind of bonus essay.

Wow the quality of these reviews really diminish. LOL

This is the last of six books in Mindy Kaling's Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes) Series. These books are short stories about her life. In this edition, Kaling talks about becoming a "Big Shot." Now that she is a "celebrity," she feels like she should flaunt it a bit within the celebrity circle that she runs. The way she feels she should show that is to buy meals for other celebrities when she sees them out at a restaurant. In one case, she was "dissed" by a celebrity, and it became an obsession for her. After some evaluation, she learned another way to flaunt that celebrity that came with a much higher reward for her and for the recipient.

As with all of her books in this series, Kaling is very raw with her emotions, and she shares them through humor. If she is the way she presents herself in these chapter books, I think she and I would be good friends. She seems like an ordinary girl with ordinary fears, wants, and needs that just so happens to be a bit famous.

I read each of the installments of this "book" over the last two days and this was my very favorite. I like Mindy. I like her a lot. She writes in a very realistic, believable way. I can relate to everything she relays even when it's about Hindu rituals, or Indian food with which I have no association. She's writing about being a person.

This one talked about how she enjoys generosity. It makes he feel good. Then she tells us about a time she was unwittingly $1800.00 worth of generous and then wasn't acknowledged. She was honest about her feelings and I love that because I too have been hurt when not acknowledged for generosity. Then I feel guilty. Mindy did too!

3.5 ⭐️ I have mixed feelings about Kaling - she annoys me at times but often still makes me laugh. This is a good & super fast read that made me a smile a lot throughout. If I'm ever in a reading slump or not into my current book, I'll download a quick read on kindle unlimited to pull me out & her books are a great go-to..

“The workday at The Office writers’ room started at 10:00. I would arrive around 10:15, sometimes later, at which point the showrunner would give me a dark look that told me he was very aware of my lateness and that we would be talking about it later.”

this was not a great start for me for a story.
it might be a pet peeve of mine but i think it shows a complete and utter lack of respect for any and all people you are meeting -privately or work related!- to show up late.
especially if it’s not at all an unintentional but seems to be more of a power play of “oh look at me, i am here now so let’s get started now!”

it’s looks very selfish to me.

and while i liked the first of this little series enough and even found some moments entertaining, the rest and especially the last to essays/stories of this a little series makes me think that kaling is an incredible insecure and jealous and at the same time self absorbed and selfish person that believes that everything she does should could more because she did it.

she hears someone paid for her friends dinner secretly to surprise them? she’s jealous that that it never happens to her,
so she does it to someone and is sulking and talking about how she never even got a thanks for doing it.

maybe that’s just me again but if you do something to apparently be nice there shouldn’t be expectations attached to that and you certainly shouldn’t talk about it with a completely different group of people and gossip about it just to make sure that others know what you did!

i am sorry but this entire series collection as a whole didn’t work for me.
you might love this if you are a huge fan - or as kaling herself states it in the book “are obsessed with her” this might be wonderful for you.

but if you want to read something that’s actually good and/or nice? skip this and look for something else.

This is part of a collection of essays and I'm going to give it an overall rating of 3.5 rounded up to 4.
I listened to these on audio book and Mindy Kaling comes across as extremely personable and funny. It felt like i was listening to a friend tell me about her weekend.

I picked up Mindy Kaling's essays on Amazon, and read one in between my January and February TBR. Although I started on the 6th essay in the series (oops), I enjoyed reading her thoughts as I absolutely adore her! Even though I love her and watching her on The Office and The Mindy Project, this particular essay fell a little flat for me. I liked reading about her life from her perspective, but the humor I see when she writes for her T.V. shows was not as evident. I'm hopeful her humor shines a little more in the rest of the essays.

What I liked about this is that she is being very real. There is nothing wrong with liking to be acknowledged for a nice deed you did, just beware you aren't truly being generous. You are expecting a pay back in some form. She realizes this and owns it. And maybe you can say she grew from it because she did then give to charity and really felt good about herself.

this was a great step in the direction to get out of my current reading slump and indecisiveness about what to read next. Kaling is smart, witty, funny and spot on and reading this piece was such a delight. i look forward to reading the other pieces in the series.

There is something about turning pages that makes me feel like I accomplished something.
ikr, same.

I think one of the reasons I loved it is that my image of a big spender is usually an older white male. All the best stereotypes for people showing unexpected generosity are usually reserved for white men: Santa Claus, Bill Gates, God.
again, spot on.

This is the last essay, and I'm sad that there is no more. I love her writing!
This essay even had a bonus story at the end, and frankly, that one made my day! It was so much more personal, and with the photos, gave the reader a real glimpse into her daily life. Who doesn't want to know that?!
Such lighthearted, fun stories that I definitely recommend to you all!

Loved this essay on the topic of what it means to be truly generous.

I adored Mindy’s whole collection, and I can absolutely picture myself reading and/or listening to it all over again in the future. Highly recommend!

My only complaint is that I wish this was in print so that I could buy a copy for my personal library 😉

I love Mindy. This is still 5 stars. But this is the essay that I would like to say I'm a little wary of her last few paragraphs on fame and fortune. Just reminding everyone that the poor doesn't exist to make the rich feel better. I don't have anything against donating to charities but it's annoying when people do charities to make themselves better.

Mindy discloses that in later seasons of The Office, she would often be late to work which was annoying because the first hour was gossip hour, so she might miss the gossip. One day, B.J. told the story of running into a NBC exec at a dinner the night before with some friends in which the NBC exec paid B.J.+ friends' check before he left. Mindy spends the rest of the essay trying to recreate the suaveness of this moment. Failures proceed.

The story of B.J, Lena Dunham, and Mindy out to brunch and sending cookies to Hugh Jackman's table seems like a bizarre dream I would have. Like I'm sure it happened but at the same time, it doesn't feel like that is a thing that happened.

Mindy paying for a big Hollywood star's almost 2,000 dollar meal (HOW?) who did not even say thank you, is a sad story. Like her not naming the celebrity and then saying that she accidentally told this story at Conan's Christmas party once, and said celebrity is good friends with Conan, calls in the question the lack of recent appearances of Mindy on Conan's show. My theory is she's still embarrassed. I mean same.

Also, how come this is the first I'm hearing of Rashida Jones and Ezra Koenig dating ( which Mindy hung out with at Conan's party)?? Now they have a kid! The people should be talking about this relationship more.

Tracey Wigfield saying," Women always take bad behavior by men and twist into somehow our fault. It makes more sense to us that we are somehow wrong than the possibility that a man is being rude," is a great quote and fact.

Mindy turning this essay into a moral lesson on generosity. We love to read it.

Bonus contenT! We got another day in the life with photos from her assistant, Elena! Another one of my favorite jokes:"Please don't feel bad for Elena. She gets paid handsomely. Not in money ,but in anecdotes about The Office. The point is, she's fine." I very much enjoyed these photos. I live for the back of Kit's head photos.

"My iPad is the coaster for my lunch."
