Full of humor, heart, and hilarious hijinks, Martian Ghost Centaur is a touching story about protecting the things you love and following your passion.

The town of Southborough used to be a major tourism destination, drawing folks from all over in the hopes they’d spot the famous Sasquatch, reportedly seen in the town many times over the years. But it’s been ages since anyone’s spotted the 'squatch, and tourism is starting to dry up. To build their techie headquarters, a tech company called Start-up.com begins buying places all over town, driving out all the local townspeople. Luckily, Southborough is also home to Louie O’Connor, firm believer in the Sasquatch’s existence and all-around mega 'squatch fan.

When Louie’s dads’ restaurant, Squatch Burger, starts to go under and fall prey to the techie start-up, Louie and her best friend Felix decide they’ll do whatever it takes to save the town from losing all the people and places that make it special. In hopes that convincing people the Sasquatch is real and to re-attract tourism, Louie and Felix plan an elaborate hoax in hopes of saving the town from the dot-com takeover. But when Felix starts talking about leaving their hometown for college in LA, Louie will have to face some tough questions about herself, her future career, and her place in her beloved hometown.

Louie lives in a small Northern California town once known for its sasquatch sightings. But businesses are folding and a tech magnate is buying up real estate to locate a new headquarters there. It's her last summer after high school and she's trying to figure out what to do with her life while working at a job she hates in order to help bring in money for her family. It's a story about growing up and finding your passion in life.

Martian Ghost Centaur by Mat Heagerty is a story about a town fighting against the loss of its businesses, its people, its identity. It is also a story about unknown monsters, both fantastic and horrifyingly real. And about how an old lie can make everything cramble.

In a town where a Sasquatch siting made everything bloom, the loss of the Sasquatch and gentrification puts in peril everything its people have fought for.

Louie, our main character, tries to save her town. Her idea? To catch the Sasquatch. But... what happens if there's no creature?

I enjoyed Martian Ghost Centaur but found that it has two very distinct problems: One, it tries to do everything. At once. At the same time. We have the true-or-not Sasquatch story. We have the centrification story. We have a main character who creates an airbnb in her bedroom's closet; we have the mini-story of the Ghost-catcher girl. And so on and so forth.

And two... I couldn't stand Louie. She is rude to everybody, her evolution as a character is kind of strange, she contradicts herself and her own feelings more than once...

Sadly, I had very high hopes with this story and it kind of let me down. I enjoyed the drawing and the color (the artistic side is simply amazing) but could not enjoy the story at all.

I was given this e-arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This story was a lot of fun! The main thing that I look for when I am picking up graphic novels is the art style, and wow Martian Ghost Centaur had stunning illustrations... So much colour!

This book was set in a small quirky town (really cute) that used to be a major tourist destination due to the sightings of the famous Sasquatch. A fancy tech company has moved in and started buying all the land and forcing out the locals so it is up to our main character, Louie, to help save the town!

The book's main themes are family and friendship and it does a really great job of showing the character progression of Louie who starts out quite childish.

I loved this graphic novel so much! I grew attached to all the characters. Louie is such an inspiring young woman, who overtake the obstacles in her way in a very creative manner. I think that rumors of monster sighting are really important, to keep hold of the fantasy part of her world. Doesn't matter if it's real or not, just knowing it could be is enough! Let us be kid all over and imagine it could be real.

Many thanks to Oni Press for the complimentary e-copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

While I enjoyed background gags and cryptid puns scattered throughout, this is a very uneven read. 75% of the book is dragged out arguments and interactions that don't go much of anywhere, so the plot is crammed into the back 25%. The wrap up to the stories of the greedy developer, rescuing the town, thwarting hipster tourists, and healing Lou's relationships is messy, confusing, and completely unsatisfying. The Martian Ghost Centaur doesn't even appear until the last third of the book.

A really cute and sweet comic about family, friends and the Sasquatch. The main character Louie seems a bit too childish for her age (she's 16/17) but she does grow and learn.
A nice and quick read. Really enjoyed it.

How far would you go to save your community?

That’s the question at the heart of Mat Heagerty’s “Martian Ghost Centaur”. The little town of Southborough had been a tourist magnet for a while due to reported sightings of Sasquatch (or more commonly, Bigfoot). Soon though Sasquatch sightings began to reduce and so did the tourists. The little town, which had thrived on tourist income was now beginning to struggle. Adding to its woes is the obnoxious, rich owner of a tech company that’s buying up the town to convert it into its company headquarters. The story follows Louie, a high-schooler who lives in the town with her two gay dads, and her attempts to save her beloved little community.

The novel is a quick read and the fun, quirky characters are easy on the brain. It’s an immersive plot and I found myself swept up into the lives of Louie and her dads, Pratima, Felix and a small bunch of other town folks. Louie is a passionate, intense character and we see how much she loves Southborough in the myriad schemes she hatches to revive the town’s economy and in her friendship with Felix.

Apart from how gentrification affects entire businesses and families, there are accompanying themes of knowing what you want to do and following your heart.

Sometimes, though, Louie's character got to me with some of her dramatic reactions and what seemed like extreme naivete. But there is an arc to her character, which redeemed it for me towards the end. In fact, I liked how the whole story comes together in the end.
Overall, a nice, fun read!

Martian Ghost Centaur had an incredibly cool concept, fantastic art, and a strong sense of place. Southborough reminded me of the small towns I know and love (though sadly none of them are known for Sasquatch sightings), which made Louie's determination to save its quirky charms a compelling story.

As a protagonist, I found Louie to be a bit frustrating at times. She spends a lot of the story either upsetting or alienating most of the people in her life, which is accurate teenage behavior but made it a bit hard to root for her. It was nice that the lessons she learned are sweet without being saccharine and felt like they made sense within the context of the story.

Overall, the story was fun and I think my issues with Louie are due more to bad memories of my own teenage behavior than anything else. If you like lighthearted, whimsical stories about finding your passion, definitely check out Martian Ghost Centaur.

'Martian Ghost Centaur' with story and art by Mat Heagerty is about a martian ghost centaur eventually, but it's a graphic novel with a lot of heart along the way.

Louie lives in Southborough, home of a Sasquatch sighting years ago. Her two dads own a burger place with a signature burger and her best friend Felix lives in the town. Then things start to change. A tech startup wants to buy up the town and the Sasquatch sighting is debunked on tv. As Louie watches her friends leave and her family business failing, she has to find a plan to fix things.

This was a fun story with fun art. The title doesn't really make a lot of sense for the majority of the story, but it will eventually, and it is a catchy title.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

While the art was cute and fun, I feel like the story was a little lacking. It was such a great premise - a town built on the fact that the sasquatch was sighted there - but the story felt "dumbed down" into a faster paced comic. One of my biggest criticisms is that the main character never learns or grows in the story. But at the end of the day, they save the town and she never grows. There could've been a really great message about how things in life change and what it means to grow up and mature. Her friend moving away. Her town changing to become more of a city. Getting a job. These are all perfectly normal things. But the mc acts like a CHILD. For example, when she can't get a job at a bar for LEGAL REASONS she decides to go on Yelp and give the bar 1 star. She expects things to be handed for her on a silver platter, and most of the time it works because she's the main character. In the end when they need lots of money to buy the town back, a celebrity just GIVES it to them. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in property and housing. What was ParaNorma thinking?
But despite my incredible dislike for the main character girl, my favorite characters are Felix, the best friend, and her Pa and Dad. First of Felix is just so cool. I feel like he'd love memes. He quotes Doug "the Boulder" Johanassan and just wants to go to college. And the parents are so awesome. I want the relationship they have. Also Dad and Pa are so caring. Like they're willing to give up their restaurant and move to a better town for the sake of their daughter. Everything they do is for her to live a better life.
And she turns around and acts like an ungrateful brat because they *might* move. 🙄

Excellent YA graphic novel. The protagonist felt thoroughly younger than how 17 is usually portrayed, but maybe that’s part of the point it’s making? I loved the messages about finding what makes you happy and working for it even if some characters and details had to be flattened to make those plot points land.

This is such a cute graphic novel!

This is about the town of Southborough. It used to be a tourism destination cause it was the place where the famous Sasquatch was spotted. It's been many years since the last time someone saw it and people are losing interest in it. Then one day some tech guy starts buying up most of the town places cause the town people need the money. This is also Louie's home. She's determined to prove that the Sasquatch is real so that tourists can come back. She teams up with her best friend Felix and they both start planning how to help their town. But when Felix tells her he's thinking of leaving for college soon, Louie starts to question her future.

This was so much fun. Louie comes up with great ideas! I love Louie's parents (even though they don't notice all of those people in Louie's closet!). And the people in town are amazing. It was a quick read and I really enjoyed it.

I also really loved the conclusion. It was a beautiful read.

Now this is my kind of graphic novel!!

Okay, so I have varying taste in graphic novels at the best of times, so a lot of other genres and styles work just as well for me, but I honestly just enjoyed the crap out of this. MGC is a super fun, super quirky, and super witty ride through main character Louie's life in the bizarre yet utterly quaint town of Southborough - a town that's under dire threat of losing its inhabitants and spirit to an all-consuming tech company. In short, Louie sets out to save the town in the strangest way possible, and readers are immediately drawn in by her naïvely can-do personality and the charm exuded by each of the supporting characters.

In short: I loved Louie. I loved the artwork. I loved the humour (I found it genuinely snort-out-loud funny). I loved Southborough and all its people.

I loved it all.

Well, that was some fun entertainment over lunch. No, I actually read it while I was eating lunch.

Martian Ghost Centaur isn't my favorite book title but it fits the ridiculous story. Louie is the daughter of two guys who started a sasquatch rumor when they were younger that resulted in a spike of town tourism. Unfortunately, as it goes, people started losing interest over time. Louie spends her last Summer before college trying to find a way to bring people back to her town before the whole thing gets taken over by capitalism. It's a pretty deep plot if you think about it. 👀

My favorite bits were the throwbacks to pop culture from the 90s and early 2000s and the end lesson to 'do more of what makes you happy'. This is definitely a Graphic novel you should pick up.

A small town, a Sasquatch, a girl determined to do everything she can to save the town, and more. I really had tons of fun reading this one.

Meet Louie, a strong girl who loves her two dads and who loves her little town. I loved how Louie was determined to help her dads, her town. She never once gives up, instead just boulders on making new plans for getting money (she is already letting people sleep in her closet as an airBNB which had me laughing so much), and making sure her town is getting saved. I would have liked her to be a bit honest towards her dads in several of the pages, but given what we find out about the dads.. I can imagine that she isn’t going to let that slide. Still, did she really think no one would notice? 😛
I loved her plans to revive the town which, as the title already tells you WAY before it actually happens in the story, means the Martian Ghost Centaur makes its appearance. I loved that plan and I loved seeing who was involved in it and how they made it a success.
I loved seeing her try to get people away from the town (the techies) by putting signs everywhere, and doing other sneaky things to put them off from getting things.
Plus, we see her grow up and ask herself some questions. I like that this was added and I loved seeing Louie make some decisions and find answers.

I love her friendship with Felix, they make quite a pair, though I would have liked her to be a bit more OK with his plans. I get that it is no fun to have a friend move away, but not everyone wants to stay in town forever. Some people just have other dreams.

The dads were so cute together!

My heart broke for this small town and how hard it was for everyone to stay. How much money problems there were and how everyone was just giving up. 🙁 My heart broke further when Louie’s dads also confirmed their issues and were thinking of moving. Poor dads, poor Louie, and poor little town which looks so awesome (I definitely want to visit that bunker grocery store).

The Sasquatch stuff? I really liked that story, though my heart just broke when we found out certain things. 🙁

I at first wasn’t too big of a fan of the Youtube star, but later on I started liking her more and more and I could see that she is a sweet girl.

The ending had me smiling so so much. I am so happy with it!

The art was fabulous as well, I like the style a lot!

I know that Leef is the villain and we are supposed to dislike him, but I so wasn’t a fan of him that I didn’t like the story as much as I could have. I was just frustrated that this crap was allowed. That he just could buy up left and right without anyone caring or coming between. It just seemed utter bullshit. The dude is just pure evil and doesn’t have any sympathy or care for people and their lives/emotions. He just treats people like pawns. Bah. Disgusting human being.

All in all, a fun book featuring mostly great characters and a sweet town that needs to be saved. I would recommend it.

This graphic novel was fun but I did have a few issues with it that took away from my enjoyment.

In this story, we are set in a town that was once booming with tourists because of a Sasquatch siting but as those sitings dwindled, so did the tourists and money and now the town is on the verge of being bought out by this man who wants to make it a tech area.

Our main character is determined to find a solution and to save her dads from having to sell their restaurant and move.

I liked the whole message in this story but the main character got on my nerves. She was constantly rude to everyone around her even when they were helping her and she just never really got any admonishment for her actions. A lot of it was brushed off.

Also, she ran an airbnb out of her bedroom? Which was just her closet and her dads didn’t know? That seemed so unrealistic to me and kept taking me out of the story.

The ending was nice but that’s really the only part of the story that I enjoyed.

I do think this would be loved and adored by a younger audience! My issues with this story might just be due to my age now.

I liked the spunky main character even though she could be a little intense at times. It was really fun watching her try to revive the tourism in her town to save her fathers burger joint. Known for its Sasquatch sightings the town has become this welcoming eccentric community, but since Sasquatch hasnt been sighted in a while the people who made their living off of the tourism it brought to town are forced the sell and move away. I enjoyed seeing the main character come up with this outlandish plan to get people excited to visit again and run the techie buying everything out of town. Using her closet as an Airbnb was a bit much though. I loved her relationship with her two fathers. They were so sweet and supportive.

A whimsical graphic novel in which a girl tries to save her village from imminent gentrification. The idea is unique, but I wish it were more well developed. I enjoyed the art style - I felt like it brought these characters to life. But the whole story felt too quick and fast-paced for me. It kept me entertained for the most part. However, I didn't have the time to form a connection to these characters or what they were doing.

I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Martian Ghost Centaur centers around Louie and her town, Southborough. The town became famous when a monster was spotted years before and people starting coming to try and spot it themselves. Louie's dads own a burger joint there but for a while now, less and less people have been coming and their business is struggling. Actually all the businesses in town are struggling, so when a big city guy from a soulless corporation comes and tries to buy them off one by one, most of them can't pass off on the offer. Louie doesn't accept it though and does everything to keep her dads from selling and return her town to its old glory.

This was an interesting read. it was fun and light but also not. It was really about gentrification and the fact that it uproots families and businesses but with a side of monsters and urban legends. Louie was an interesting character and I felt for her but she was also so extra. It was hard to take her seriously at times. Honestly, I think my favorite characters was her boss, then her best friend... then her dads... then Louie.
Some of the plot also felt too easy. But all around it was a good read, with good characters and I think it would be a good way to explain gentrification and the harm it can cause to younger audiences.

A small town called Southborough known for its sightings of the world-renowned sasquatch is about to be bought out by a rich social media influencer as sightings of the sasquatch grew less and less. But a girl named Louie O’Connor won’t call it quits, and will save the town by any means necessary, even by finding where the real sasquatch has gone. All to help her dads business, and all the other towns’ family-owned businesses start booming once more.

This was such a sweet graphic novel of a girl named Louie and her two dads who lives in a small town along with her childhood best friend, Felix. I couldn’t put this graphic novel down as I kept wanting to find out how all of this pans out. While I thought that the main character feels like they were being unfair to her loved ones as the story went on, in a way I wouldn’t blame them. There were so many cute surprises throughout the story of people’s different passions, queer characters, so many BIPOC characters, and following your heart. There was nothing wrong about this graphic novel really, it was just a sweet and fun-read.

This graphic novel had family, virtues, and a great coming-of-age story at the heart of its story. Great book to read for all ages!

Oh my goodness! This was just the cutest.

First off, the artwork was absolutely gorgeous! I really dig the style and it made it a very easy read.

The storyline was super cute. Okay so it was possibly a little cliche and sickly sweet, but I loved it. It had a real feel good ending which is exactly what I needed right now. Sure the main character was a little self centred and naive, however I saw each character as a real caricature, I don’t think they were ever intended to represent the average Joe.

Overall an easy, cute, feel good read!

This graphic novel celebrates the good things about a small town while delivering a message of finding and following your passions and protecting the things you love. It is filled with friendship, family and humor and the straightforward graphics and coloring supports the storytelling. Louie, the main character, can also be rude and blinded by her crusading spirit to the hurt she sometimes causes by her actions and words to those around her. Overall, a positive book delivered with heart and humor.

This is a very sweet and whimsical sweet graphic novel about a 17 year old girl in a small town famous for it's Sasquatch sightings. The artwork really appealed to me; it's clean and fun, easy to follow, and with a nice steady pace this GN is a quick and enjoyable read.

Utterly delightful and heartwarming, this graphic novel of a girl’s attempt to save her cryptid-famous small town from gentrification by an odious techie is sure to inspire readers of all ages. Yeah this one was just not for me.

I was in a rush at the library so I just randomly picked this one of the shelf thinking it was a sci-fi or something. But I was very wrong. But, it is actually a YA comedy. Which I'm not a huge fan of. The art was great and there were some funny moments. But I found, the character unlikable, and the story to be predictable.

If your into these types of books, you will probably love this, otherwise you will probably end up like me.
