Szkołę Rosewood Hall wybiera przede wszystkim dlatego, by uniknąć obowiązków, jakie musi wypełniać w królestwie Maradawii.
Connie Glynn is an English author and YouTuber. Her debut novel Undercover Princess, the first in The Rosewood Chronicles, was published in 2017. Glynn is also known for her YouTube videos on the channel Noodlerella. She provided the voice for the character Moxie Dewdrop in the UK cinema version of Dreamworks' Trolls.
I am lucky to have the best sister ever, who keeps giving me books I love! She gave me Undercover Princess for my birthday back in November last year, and I finally managed to get to it. Thank you, sis!
Even though Undercover Princess has great resemblance to The Princess Diaries and The Princess Protection Program, this book is unique in its own way, and the story is very different and positively surprising. I was in love with the characters and loved this book a lot. I will definitely be reading the second book of the series!
The story focuses on two main characters:
* Lottie Pumpkin - the ordinary girl * Ellie Wolf - the princess
And I wish it was all so easy. But you see, Lottie is an ordinary girl, she grew up in England and her mother passed away when she was little. Before she passes away, she gives Lottie a tiara for her birthday and makes her promise that she will always be brave. Lottie’s only goal in life is to attend Rosewood Hall, no matter what. And she makes it, with a scholarship.
On the other side, we have Ellie, the princess of Maradova. All she ever wants to be is ordinary, but she is surrounded by servants and shiny items. She wants to go to Rosewood Hall, only to avoid all her royal duties. And the only way of her parents letting this happen is if she attends the college undercover.
Then we have these two girls being roommates. A rumour spreads around the school and everyone thinks that Lottie is the princess. And in this whole mystery, the real princess is in danger, but no one must know that the real princess is Ellie. And this is only the beginning.
The story is full of adventures and hilarious scenes, where we see Lottie and Ellie building their friendship, and trying to figure out the mystery behind all the threats they are receiving, all while they attend classes and go to parties like ordinary college girls.
While they play this game of swapping identities, they realise that this is more than a game, it is a lifestyle. And if Lottie is the undercover princess, she has to do everything to protect the real princess and her identity. Is this what she really wants? Is their friendship worth it?
There was a LGBT reference with a couple in this book, and maybe it was me, but I could also see a few sparks between Lottie and Ellie. I honestly expected something to happen between Lottie and Ellie's bodyguard. There were sparks though, so perhaps in the next book?
I loved how the partially-romantic scenes were building up to the real moment and made me want to read more. The writing skills this author has is truly amazing, and I praise her for it. It was a pleasure to read each chapter.
4.5* Harry Potter meets Cinderella, meets The Princess Diaries, meets The Princess Protection Programme (yes, that fab and totally underrated Demi Lovato/Selena Gomez movie) in Connie Glynn's wonderful debut novel, Undercover Princess. I'm painfully aware of how many 'meets etc.' I've just used but I promise they will *hopefully* make sense after you've read the book, which, of course, you definitely should do. Yet, even with these comparisons (of some of my favourite films, I should add), Undercover Princess is undoubtedly it's own unique story, full of imagination and wonder.
UNDERCOVER PRINCESS is a fun, adventurous tale with charming main characters and an intriguing mystery, but its downfall is the underdeveloped supporting cast, juvenile prose, poor world-building and contrived plot.
This book is very obviously written by a YouTuber, and by that I mean, someone given a book deal for their audience, not their penmanship. The writing and plotting are messy and cringe-worthy, at times, despite how much love and heart there is in this novel.
I’m an absolute sucker for preppy boarding school mystery stories, so when I heard Glynn was writing THE ROSEWOOD CHRONICLES, I was hype immediately. I don’t religiously watch Glynn’s videos, but I do enjoy her content occasionally, and I was still hoping for this book to be a juicy read.
Unfortunately, this was me after finishing:
The voice is juvenile, unpractised and clunky. Very tell, not show, in places where showing would be more appropriate than telling, and because of it, the prose is stilted, overexplains and filters constantly. “Ellie did this. Jamie did that. Lottie felt this” pretty much explains the entire structure of the writing. Adverbs are rampant when there is usually a better verb that could capture the emotion of the speaker more efficiently.
Dialogue is jarring, littered with amateur mistakes like spamming capslock for entire spoken sentences, or restating people’s names over and over again. Inconsistency in use of British or American spellings. Incorrect grammar.
Characters often overreacted and it made melodrama more than good conflict. Some of the dynamics are just all out badly-written, most especially the intimacy between Lottie and Ellie. Like… stroking one another, nuzzling into their hair, taking icing off the other’s cheek with a finger and then licking it, nibbling one another. The problem isn't that they're love interests; the problem is that it seems like a rushed attempt at gradual romance.
(Note for publishers: send clean copies of your ARCs! Do you know how annoying it is to read actual copy-editing notes the middle of the text, like “change slung to strung” or “delete comma”?)
The plot is confusing and downright incoherent at times. Lottie is somehow able to tell Things like that had me more bewildered than intrigued, and there’s no meatier explanation with each situation to bridge the gap.
In addition, plot points are contrived, convenient and lack foreshadowing. I cannot fathom why Lottie and Ellie made such a big deal out of Binah's puzzles (an actual maths puzzle is in this book! Most bizarre thing I’ve seen in a novel, and I’m counting the weird font changes in TIMEKEEPER). Isn't the current predicament more concerning, girls? I’d rather find out , thanks.
Other plot conveniences include:
The climax, as such, was a total disappointment. I didn’t fear the villain because the explanation behind their villainy was flimsy, and they made ‘amateur villain’ mistakes like divulging their evil scheme before they’d fully executed their plan and evaded getting caught.
One of the biggest problem was the ‘magic’ wasn’t explained at all. In a postscript from Glynn she explains that the fantastical nature of this series is merely atmospherical, of coincidence and fate, but that doesn't really make sense when there is literally magic that occurs that deliberately echoes fairy tales. Case and point,
Likewise, the world-building of Maradova is poor. A country somewhere close to Russia, the only explanation of its history is that it was once part of the British Empire but reclaimed independence and kept English as the main language. This is a barebones explanation and not realistic. Why wouldn’t Maradovans have their own accents, their own culture or traditions? At the moment, the country is utterly indistinguishable from England, and both Ellie and Jamie act exactly the same way that Lottie does, despite being from two different countries between them. It unfortunately seemed like a lazy world-building shortcut.
Lottie is basically a Noodlerella self-insert. She adores fairy tales and Disney, always wears pink, has an obsession with princesses, and is a vegetarian. I guess I don’t really have a problem with this, but it doesn’t really speak for originality. As main character, Lottie had her sweet moments, but most of the time her character was extremely and infuriatingly naïve, to the point where it defied basic logic. She ignores all the signs that and even though Ellie and Jamie warn her, she completely ignores them and continues on.
To add to that, Lottie's view on vegetarianism came off as extremely preachy and self-rightious, and it really killed her whole "I'm good and kind" vibe.
Most of the supporting cast are unnecessary and underdeveloped. There’s heads of year, sports captains and teacher’s assistants that are all named but have literally zero relevance. The teachers’ descriptions are all info-dumped in one go and it makes them forgettable. Lola and Micky could be mushed to create one character or removed entirely and nothing would change. Raphael, Saskia and Edmund are infuriatingly underdeveloped,
Ellie, Jamie, Binah and Anastacia are the only side characters of importance, and even they lack coherent descriptions of their appearance. Jamie is at least half Pakistani and it’s not mentioned until after the midpoint of the book, by which point, I already had a mental image of his appearance. All it would take is Lottie to think “He had brown skin, possibly from Pakistan” or something. Heck, even Lottie herself is poorly described; it was at least twenty chapters before I learnt what colour hair she had.
Also, want to narrow my eyes at the fact that the only confirmed Black character within the text smokes, swears and encourages trouble… and using food words to describe skin colours. Yikes.
Despite all my problems, it was enjoyable on the surface. Like I said, there’s a lot of heart, and the main trio are adorable, funny and charming in their own way. Lottie and Ellie have such a sweet friendship (obviously blossoming into something else), and it’s a real driving force behind their shenanigans at the school.
I also loved Rosewood Hall, but I'm disappointed there wasn't a deeper look into it. The secret passages, the houses, the lore; it was easy to be swept by it. The descriptions are lavish and rich and help you visualise the school well. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. The series is called The Rosewood Chronicles; I shouldn't come out of it let down that there wasn't enough wonder and (strictly metaphorical) magic in such an illustrious boarding school.
OVERALL? This was honestly a lot better than my first read, but I think context absolutely helped (... as well as character art). However, still a very obvious first-novel-ever-written debut. Three stars for enjoyment, but two stars for storytelling technique.
eARC received from Penguin Random House via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This title released 2nd November 2017.
EDIT 2nd November 2017: Added some extra details.
EDIT 22nd November 2020: I decided to reread this on whim, mostly to prepare for the upcoming PRINCESS AT HEART, in February 2021 and partly to see if I can finagle more hints about my working theory (spoilers on the link). My thoughts pretty much remain the same, so above is the edited version of my initial review, written in September 2017, altered to add clarity and succinctness. Some parts have been struck out as I no longer agree with my old opinion or it's no longer relevant (I first read the ARC version), however I've kept them here to keep the integrity of the original review.

I have never watched any of Connie's youtube videos and didn't realise she was a book tuber until I read a few comments before going into this book.
This book was okay. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. It was a quick and easy read to get through and I finished it within two sittings.
I saw Kate (Girl Reading's) review and I have to agree with it being all of the things she mentioned. It was like reading a disney original movie/tv show in a book form. It reminded me of Princess Protection Programme and The Princess Diaries so much - which was good, as I am not ashamed to say how much I love them movies! - and it also had some small similarities to Harry Potter and many different fairytales.
The characters were okay. I loved Ellie & Lottie but I did have some issues with each of them. Ellie wasn't quite as 'rebellious' and 'crazy' as were told she was. I was kind of waiting for her personality to come out but it just didn't. Lottie was pretty cool but I had issues in how she treated her best friend from home. I don't wanna say too much else as I want this to be spoiler free but I did have issues with both. I didn't really care for any other character. Jamie was just...so...bland. I have no other word to describe him. I didn't care for him, he truly made me bored when he was there.
The relationships were okay. Uh...so I know that Ellie & Lottie are 'friends' but...I kind of shipped them together? I seriously did, I felt like I could feel some tension between them but I don't think that will be explored. There was a 'romance' kind of in this book but I truly didn't care for this what so ever. Truthfully, I only cared about the relationship between Ellie and Lottie.
I think I would enjoy this more if I was younger and starting to read for the first time. It was enjoyable but I wasn't blown away.
Confession: The cover is what made me truly pick up this book as it is absolutely stunning. Wow.
I might pick up the next book but truthfully, I don't know if I am that bothered continuing.
DNF @ pg 26 Apparently there is a lot of LGBTQ in this book. Already had concerns and I wasn’t even 2 chapters in yet. But looked at reviews and half of the characters are LGBTQ. So I will not be continuing.
I'd probably give this to a girl who is around 10 years old because that's who I reckon would enjoy this kind of thing. It was a Princess/Rich Kids version of Harry Potter fan fiction but way less interesting, badly written and just.....blah. Very blah. I got 100 pages in and I wondered what the point of the story was, and it's a shame because it started off quite sweet. Then nothing.
All the characters were very clique, they weren't in the slightest bit interesting or entertaining, and very copy and paste from every middle grade/ya book ever. There was no development in the setting, characters, plot, anything. The writing was very simple and a bit lazy.
If you read this, I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
This book reminded me a lot of the Princess Protection Programme with Selena Gomez as we have two girls who both want to live different lives than the ones they are born into, Ellie is a princess and Lottie is a regular girl who loves to wear tiaras. These two girls end up being roommates at the same college (the princess is undercover) and once the rumour of a princess being at the school is revealed, everyone there assumes it’s Lottie that’s the princess. And her and Ellie continue to let them believe that, expect the real princess is actually in danger at that college but no one can actually know who she is (except the bodyguards and Ellie). But can Lottie continue to be the undercover princess to protect Ellie? She needs to make that difficult decision herself, is their friendship worth the risk, and more importantly, is this really want she wants to do?
I’d say this book is aimed at anyone 10-15 as it’s not really an original concept, and unfortunately the execution is a little off for me as a 30 something woman. It felt like it dragged for half of the book and I didn’t connect with any of the characters on any level. That being said, I did find myself wanting to finish the book because I wanted to see what happens. I think this is a book you’ll either love or hate, and if you go into it without any expectations you’ll enjoy the read. Personally I plan to continue with the series just to see if anything out of the ordinary happens.
I do now want to re-watch the Princess Protection Programme though cause that film SLAPS. Thank you to The Write Reads for sending me a copy to review.
5 stars!! Wowww!! This book was so cute, I loved the plot, and storyline!! Please read it if you haven’t!! I would say this book is more for mature audiences, maybe 13 or 14+!! Can’t wait to read the second one!
How I wish this book had been written when I was fourteen and looking for a book about girls my age who fight for each other so they can become stronger individually. But, better late than never, right?
Undercover Princess is not just a funny story about a girl who pretends to be a princess so that her friend who is actually a princess can be safe from harm. It's a story about a naïve but very intelligent girl whose heart is so big and pure that she allows herself to be in danger so that her friend isn't. It's a story that gloriously destroys stereotypes. It's a story that is also a reminder of how important true friendship can be and how difficult it is to keep it safe when times get hard. It's a story every girl should read.
What happens when two different girls, one who longs to be a normal girl and another who longs to be a princess are placed in the same room in the prestigious school of Rosewood.... I have only one word.... MAGICAL CHAOS. Now this book starts nicely with the introduction of our two main characters Lottie and Ellie... but that's it.... cause as soon as both of them step into Rosewood chaos erupts... identities are mixed and an ever lasting friendship starts to form. I have really enjoyed this book to the point that i went ahead an ordered the rest of the series few pages in.... yes ... its that good in my opinion... So if you have a little one or even for yourself and looking for that sweet crazy girl power series.... you've just FOUND it. Therefore do yourself a favor and get them.... Psssssss.... the last book in the chronicle has been released already... just saying.
I’ve always loved watching Connie Glynn on YouTube so I’m so incredibly sad that this didn’t work out for me. Definitely think I might’ve liked it if I picked it up at a much younger age though!
„Sometimes the world can get very loud and people can get caught up trying to get their own voice heard and they end up silencing those that really need the space to speak. William understood this, and he used his position in the world to give others the chance to speak.”
Firstly this book for me only just scraped 1.5 Stars, Which barely ever happens! The cover of the arc itself was beautiful - this was one of my favourite parts about the book! But now the issues I had with it;
My copy was an ARC which I get means it’s not finished but the amount of spelling mistakes, missed words, cut off sentences, extra words and sentences that out right just didn’t make sense, made for really difficult reading! I’ve read many ARCs in the past and they’ve never been so poorly read back over by the author!
Writing style wise I thought it was clunky and undescriptive - rather than show us something through the writing, she would just tell us. I don’t have much of an idea what the characters look like, what Maradova or Rosewood Hall looks like either!
Character wise I found Lottie incredibly annoying. She was naive and obsessed with being ‘kind, brave and unstoppable’ and once this was repeated again (and again and again) it really got on my nerves! I found the relationship between Lottie and Ellie quite weird, almost like more than friendship which is fine but if that is the case go with it, don’t just make weird stroking hair, licking cream of each other’s cheeks and snuggling up in bed scenes together without alluding to them being something more!
I also thought the book would go off on strange tangents that weren’t necessary - like Binah’s puzzle, that was strange! How can you look at a picture and then say someone is actually female? And then nothing more came of it!
I found the conclusion lacking as well - the person who was behind all the mystery and the villain of the novel was underdeveloped and there motivation behind it all seemed pretty flimsy too!
Overall this book was a huge disappointment! Like all books from the start I go in without an opinion but from the first few chapters I wasn’t enjoying it and that didn’t change. It got slightly better by the end but everything else had annoyed me too much! I think that for a younger audience this book might be more appropriate or for someone that’s willing to look past all the cheesiness! Two good points - I did like Ellie and Jamie’s characters and wish they were more developed instead of Lottie!
I don’t think it will be a series I will continue though unless something drastically changes!
Cinderella, you will go to the ball! OK! There aren't any wicked step sisters, but there is a stepmother, a rinses and a ball in this YA adventure. However, most of the story actually takes place at Rosewood Hall, a prestigious boarding school that orphan Lottie Pumpkin has worked very hard to get into. She's the first student in twelve years to have a bursary scholarship to enable her to attend alongside the offspring of the elite and famous.
A misunderstanding on her first day leads others to assume she's the Crown Princess of Maradova - who is actually her room mate! So begins a story packed with intrigue, surprises and, yes, even a ball. As Lottie strives to keep working hard, the real princess, Ellie Wolf, is a rebellious influence and life will never be the same for any of them. Get ready for mischief, mayhem and even a kidnapping in this action packed story of teens in which I thoroughly enjoyed, even though I left my teens decades ago! I will certainly look forward to reading more in this series in future.
i was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley, without obligation. I chose to read it and this is my honest review after doing so.
I recieved this book from Netgalley for an honest review. So Thank You Penguin Random House UK and obviously Connie Glynn.
Let me start off by saying I went into this book thinking it might be a little young for me. Being the ripe old age of 26, however that was so not the case this book engrossed me so much I read it in one sitting. I loved the character development, the relationship between Ellie and Lottie was just so cute. I adored the entire concept of this book. I was not expecting this book to have a mystery element but my gosh was it a good one. Really excited to see where this story goes.
Undercover Princess is everything I could ever want in a book. LGBTQA characters, princesses, and an overall magical vibe? This book makes me want to attend rosewood hall more than anything. The way Rosewood Hall is written gives me such an incredibly special feeling that I want to be a part of. I know a book is good when I want to immerse myself in the world. Easy 5/5 and I cannot wait for book 4!
I'm a conflicted about Undercover Princess because on one hand it's a nice boarding story but on the hand it's a little far fetched and loaded with certain YA tropes that I'm not a fan of.
I have to admit I wasn't aware of Connie Glynn as a YouTuber but I don't believe this would have had any impact on my experience of the book had I known beforehand. I'm very levelheaded with reviews and am willing to take it as it comes - if I like a book I like it.
Lottie Pumpkin (yes a cute name) finds herself drawn into a royal cover up when she's unknowingly roomed with the Crown Princess of Maradova. I liked the concept of a Princess trying to have a normal school experience away from the spotlight but I just couldn't fathom how NOBODY would have ever seen Ellie.
I liked the friendship between Lottie and Ellie and kept thinking there was the chance it could blossom into more as it seemed a little flirtatious at times.
I really would have liked to see more character development because it often felt a little flat. For example the villains didn't seem real because the jeopardy was lacking and a certain bad guy almost seemed like a spoof villain.
I liked Jamie and would have loved to see more about him - more page time in the next instalment please!
A lot happens in Undercover Princess so be prepared for lots of the usual teen romances and drama, as well as a hint of the mystical plus a big old royal showdown.
3 Stars in my Sky!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!
Part of me is like come on, there’s less than 100 pages left, but the other part has been like, girl you wanted to DNF this at chapter three. Put it down.
