You've probably heard of The Keto Diet. Its a very popular diet these days. The first time I ever heard of Keto was while watching The Jersey Shore: Family Reunion ( don't you judge me!) The gang had prepared one of their famous Italian dinners. There was multiple pasta dishes and Vinny said he couldn't eat it because he was Keto. The gang of course thought he was nuts and Pauly started calling him "The Keto Guido".
I didn't know what Keto meant but if it meant I couldn't eat pasta I knew it was NOT for me!
I love pasta!
I've eaten pasta 4 days this week. Pasta is my One True Love!
Stephanie Laska's version of Keto is more lenient ( lazy). While she doesn't eat pasta she does eat pizza(occasionally). Stephanie Laska made her own version of Keto and was able to lose 140 pounds doing it.
The main lesson I got from Dirty Lazy Keto is that you don't have to be perfect to lose weight and you shouldn't compare your success or failure to others. Everyone is different and not everyone will lose weight the same way.
Will I try Keto?
I'm not sure. I just love pasta too much but I may take some of the lessons from this book and apply it to my never ending battle with my weight.
If you are interested in Keto but think its too strict than I suggest you pick up this book and maybe see if a lazier Keto is for you.

I've just started it, but it's scheduled to be out soon, so my initial thoughts from page 50: WAY too repetitive. Just hype so far, except for a chart of high carb foods. The tone is odd.
Trying something new with thoughts as I go along - now on page 63 and she's started trying to sell her other books. Annoying and frustrating as hell, because now I feel I'm going to read 400 pages and not get answers.
Page 152 - and there it is in bold yet! After all the hype; do this, it works...this works for her and possibly not anybody else (obviously not the point she was making, but to word this in her style - duh!).
page 247 - pages listing net carbs for foods, many of which were listed earlier in the book; should just be located in an index.
I read the original and it was eye opening for sure! Very encouraging and enjoyable. I learned so much and can not wait to read the expanded version. #dlkfollower ❤️
As a Beta reader I am so lucky I got to read soonest! I've been following the Facebook group for over two months now but I still learned SO MUCH from this book! I'm even MORE confident that I now have the information to continue my new life style way beyond reaching goal weight because there is so much more to be gained that loss of fat! I've learned that I can succeed even if I goof now and again. If you've ever even thought about low carb this is a must read book.
This is an easy read, it explains Keto and what dirty, lazy Keto is compared to strict. I’m excited to try the recipes! Thank you to St. Martin Press for this Goodreads giveaway. This is my honest review.
This book was amazing! I felt a real connection with the author as she understands the weight loss journey. This book had helpful hints and reminded me of habits that I needed to be aware of. Reading this book helped me make some changes to my already dirty, lazy, keto lifestyle and allowed me to overcome my weight loss stall and start losing weight again.
I have a lot of feelings about this book and it’s hard to know where to begin.
For starters, if you read this mostly as a memoir of how one woman changed her life and pick up some pointers about ways you may be able to incorporate positive changes in your life, this book is a good resource. I liked that the author didn’t just talk about diet but talked about health holistically, including what you eat, incorporating exercise, and taking care of yourself and loving yourself to health. I also loved that she is also a fan of Gretchen Rubin and made it clear that she is an abstainer on a mission to help other abstainers. This book is definitely directed at people who have looked at their addiction to carbohydrates head on and want to do whatever they can to get those foods off their plates. Perhaps most of all, i appreciate that the author encourages people to pay attention to how they feel when they eat certain foods and experiment to see what will work best for them, specifically when it comes to artificial sugars.
However, i was often resentful and baffled by the author’s ignorance due to her refusal to get “scientifical.” I’m glad that her approach worked for her, but i don’t see how you can claim to not be judgmental while talking shit about people who have taken different approaches for their own health. As someone who practices intermittent fasting, i was baffled by her rude comments about people who believe that is the right way of living for them while stating that she’s never tried it and doesn’t understand it. So why be cruel about it? I don’t make fun of you for being afraid to experience a hunger pang. There were also many other examples of the author’s ignorance, including a statement that BMI is a calculation of a person’s body fat percentage, a statement that massage is just being naked in front of another person, and her complete ignorance (which she apparently never rectified) about the meaning of the term skinny-fat. Because of statements like these, i can’t recommend this book to anyone. They also bring me back to my first thoughts about the book: this is not for someone unfamiliar with keto. She immediately jumps in with her criticisms of keto by stating that she couldn’t afford organic, cage-free, etc ingredients without ever explaining why anyone would have expected her to purchase them.
This book boils down to one woman’s story. It should not be treated as a guide. She has some good things to say, but you will probably benefit just as much from just joining her Facebook group while getting your education elsewhere.
I will start by sharing that I received a copy of this book in advance for my honest and fair review.
I will follow that statement by sharing that I have never practiced a keto diet or really been that interested in it - although, I have certainly heard A LOT about it from friends and family members who have tried eating keto and I knew generally what the diet involved. When I received my copy of this book, I came to it with an open mind because I figured at the very least I could learn a little bit more about a presumably healthier way of eating and thinking about food. I also tried to think about the book from the perspective of someone who really wanted a weight loss regime that they could "stick with" and something that was realistic, rather than the radical lifestyle change that these alternative diets sometimes propose and make it really difficult for people to stick with in the long run.
The reason I feel good about giving the book 4 stars is that it is certainly an approachable book and written like it's a letter from your best friend - very colloquial and at times funny, but also no-nonsense and practical. For someone who usually reads more academic books or stylized fiction books, this was a little off putting (and one of the reasons I couldn't give it 5 stars), but I do think that for most people they will find the book easy to read and follow along with the premise.
Other positives of the book: Laska gives a lot of recipes throughout the book and even for someone like myself who doesn't plan to convert to a keto diet, I thought these looked really good and I plan to use a few of them! She also uses a lot of visualizations, which helps to break down some of the more complex aspects of keto into a digestible format (couldn't help the pun!). I really liked how she posed some "non-scale" victories associated with healthier eating and lifestyle. Sometimes it's more important how you feel, how your clothes fit, and that you have more energy rather than the number on the scale. She reminds readers of those victories and that this isn't a change overnight, but something that takes time.
A few drawbacks, again the language was at times too familiar (I think other reviewers mentioned the expletives...there aren't a lot of these), but I think that's the vibe she's going for and it may not be for everyone. Some of the book organization was scattered and topics/subtopics felt misplaced, especially towards the end where the chapters on "Oh I can't because..." "I only lost 10 pounds this month" and "I'm not supposed to eat that" really cover many of the same ideas - this could have been combined into one chapter and reorganized to really break down the hurdles of the keto diet in one place. I only mention this because if someone is using this as a reference, it might be hard to go back and find a specific idea in the book without re-reading a lot of it.
Overall, if you're interested in keto and need a little motivation, you'll likely find it in this book. Laska also connects many ideas to her social media presence where I would imagine you can get even more online and ongoing support to keep the diet up!
I have lost almost 60 pounds by following the Dirty, Lazy, Keto lifestyle, so let me say that Stephanie Laska's book and way of eating was a God-send and life-changer/saver for me! I enjoy her style of writing as it is very down-to-earth, matter of fact, funny, and candid, as she explains in an easy-to-understand way, the Dirty, Lazy, Keto lifestyle. As I read, I laughed, I cried (some funny tears, but others sad ones, as I related to some of her own personal struggles), and I learned so much! Starting a weight-loss journey or diet plan can be very intimidating (at least it was for me), and in this book it's almost as if you have a good friend sitting along-side you as your mentor and coach, cheering you on as you read each page! She takes you step by step through everything like how to get started, what your shopping list should look like, how to address setbacks, criticism, and pitfalls you may encounter, and also explains the "why" behind each facet of the DLK lifestyle and how and why it works (without getting all "scientifical" - one of her words - LOL!). I admire her candidness and honesty as she shares her own struggles, obstacles, and challenges she has faced throughout her DLK journey. I personally have tried so many weight-loss programs, regimens, fads, diet pills, yadda, yadda, yadda, and lost gang-buster weight on each of them, only to gain it back, and then some!! Dirty, Lazy, Keto for me is a very sustainable lifestyle and way of eating because it's very customizable and "let's me do me", and leaves wiggle room within reason. Definite win on this book for sure!! Keep Calm and Keto On!!
I absolutely LOVED this book!! It addressed so many issues I have surrounding weight loss that I felt like Stephanie was writing this just for me! I loved that she keeps it real. I have been on keto for the past year and a half and can definitely attest to feeling better, having more energy, etc, but as for weight loss, well.... I've lost, I've gained, gained some more, lost a little, gained... Just at a time when I started to believe keto just doesn't work, or at least doesn't work for me, I recieved this book.
I absolutely love how real she is about our feelings, every overwight persons struggle regarding self esteem, rebound eating, how non judgemental she was. It was so refreshing to read a book where she wrote not only about her success but also her failures. What a refreshing change! Reading so many diet books, and specifically keto books has made me feel like I just don't have what it takes to really live this lifestyle.
Having been eating keto already I can definitely attest to mixed feelings on trying to live a perfect keto lifestyle, eating clean, AND trying to make that fit into my food budget. This book helped me see how I can successfully eat healthy, lose weight, feel good about myself, and NOT break the bank.
Thank you Stephanie for showing me that I can do this and can do this my way. And thank you for this wonderful book!
Thank you to author Stephanie Laska for giving me a copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway! I'd read quite a bit about Keto previously, but was deterred by all of the counting and formulating the correct numbers of fats, proteins, and carbs. Laska tells her story authentically and set my mind at ease with another way to think about Keto -- the dirty, lazy variety. I appreciated her anecdotes and others' testimonials included in this book, and I especially loved that she cut off my devil's advocacy before I could even begin to explain why it might not be able to work for me. Laska not only explains how she started and maintains her dirty, lazy Keto lifestyle, but she also explains possible pitfalls and their solutions/means of avoidance. Thank you to the author for helping a "regular girl" make a plan and feel hopeful! I'm definitely looking into ordered her DLK Cookbook, too!
This is the absolute Best book for both Keto beginners and veterans. It offers so many amazing tips, tricks, and inspirations. I'm so glad someone finally discovered a way to lose weight, feel great, and have fun while doing so. Enjoying the process is only half the struggle. I mean just the word "Diet" sucks the enjoyment right out of the process. But this book shows us how to find our happy place on this journey, with so many recipe and snack ideas. I can read this book over and over again. I'm sure it will always remain in my book collection as a great reference to return to when a keto need or keto crisis arises. Whether it be a nice kick in the pants for falling off the keto wagon or just reading something positive to fire my inspiration up again. I have this book to get me through and remain on my weight loss journey.

Stephanie Laska is by far one of my biggest idols. I follow her social media, participate in her live events, have watched all of the YouTube videos and podcasts, and of course read her book. This book is constantly a reference and a guide, not just to “keto” but really to my life as a whole. Keto or not, I feel that everyone can get something positive from this book to help them with their eating and self conscious struggles.
DIRTY LAZY KETO Get Started Losing Weight While Breaking The Rules, this book is a must have for anyone considering doing the Keto Diet. I would recommend it even if you are not a newbie to this way of eating. It is an all-inclusive look at how it works, typical meals, the DIRTY LAZY KETO Food Pyramid. She also talks to you like your BFF very candidly on how to navigate your way through. How to overcome the obstacles that life throws at you and stay the course. Personally, I appreciate her direct and open approach to telling it like it is. She shares what her demons were that she had to overcome and shares how she approached things. Folks she’s been there, done it and won the battle. You will laugh and at times shed a tear as she shares her experience. I have been following her principles for a year and lost 90 lbs. I feel fantastic, this works and this book gives you the knowledge of how to and helps you figure out how to maneuver the bumps along the way.
Another great, motivational book by the founder of Dirty, Lazy, Keto. I've been doing Keto for a year and 4 months. I started my journey with Stephanie's first book and now I'm 50 pounds down, down 2 shirt sizes and 3 pants sizes. I have energy and my fibromyalgia is under control. I've almost cured my idiopathic intracranial hypertension! This new book provided some great insight into why we gain the pounds in the first place. I also liked how she explained the importance of the complex carbs from vegetables. If you are thinking about starting Keto, this book will give you the motivation to get started!
Very interesting and insightful. And encouraging. Made me want buckle down and stick to keto. Definitely helped me to see it's a doable diet without being insanely strict or denying myself completely.

Stephanie is the kind of person that you want to follow! She tells you how it is and breaks down everything in this book. This is an easy read and there is so much helpful information to keep you informed and on track. The dirty, lazy keto lifestyle is such an easy one to jump on board with, as long as you put your mind to it. I laughed, I cried, BUT, I laughed more than cried while reading this book! This lifestyle WORKS and this book is worth it! It’s fun, quick and an awesome guide to refer back to if you get in a slump or just need a push to keep on keeping on. I highly recommend!
I could never do Keto! I love watermelon (and all other fruit) too much. But this book makes me think I could do a dirty, lazy version of Keto, and I just might try it.
I just finished devouring my advance reader copy of this expanded edition of this book. Stephanie literally wrote the book on the ‘outlaw’ version of this way of eating. If you’ve ever had an unpleasant run-in with the Keto police, this book is for you! I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a realistic way to live the Keto life!
This is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn more about the keto way of life but are too afraid because of all the “rules” of what you can eat and what you “can’t”. This book will open your eyes to the possibilities of a freedom in a keto lifestyle. Complete with information, tips, encouragement, personal touches, and even some awesome recipes! Of all the keto books I have read, this is the one that I will carry around with me!
This book is amazing! It explains keto in a way that anyone can understand, even someone who has no clue what they are doing. It also helps to keep the more experienced on track, with humor, fun recipes, and zero judgements. Stephanie is kind, engaging, funny, and highly motivating! She supports you every step of the way, and this guide is a valuable resource for anyone looking to learn more about keto, or those just looking for more motivation and ideas. I will be reading this at least once every couple months to keep myself on track. Dirty, Lazy, Keto works! I've lost 50 pounds in just over a year, and put my chronic, debilitating fibromyalgia into remission with Dirty, Lazy, Keto. It has saved my life. I will never eat any other way.
I won an ARC of this book through Goodreads. I originally thought I had won the cookbook and was a bit disappointed when the book arrived in the mail. I don't typically read diet books. I just look through cookbooks for recipes. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed reading this book. Stephanie is hilarious and has really good advice. dirtylazyketo.com
This book offers a down-to earth guide to losing weight and adopting a healthier lifestyle without all the complicated jargon other diet books like to use. The author explains her methods of making her way of eating work for her while sharing all the many options any other person can use to achieve the same success. I read this book in two days and I will continue to refer back it whenever I need to remind myself that the road to a healthier life doesn’t always mean being perfect or following someone else’s ideas, or whenever I just want to know I’m not alone in my journey.
If you’re wanting to do a keto diet but don’t want to be strict about it, this is an excellent book! It has helped me so much. It’s easy to read and fun. You’ll love the author because she is so real. I also recommend the Facebook group by the same name.
Not only does Stephanie Laska's Dirty Lazy program work exeptionally well, her lastest book Dirty Lazy Keto does not disappoint! Easy to read and hard to put down. Stephanie is down to earth, practical, humerous at times, and lives this lifestyle right along with you. After having lost 140 pounds and keeping it off for over 7 years, she proves that anyone can do this and be successful. It doesn't matter how many diets you've been on in the past, or lengths that you've gone through to lose weight. Her story will inspire you as she shows you how to make keto work best for you. No judgement or strict "keto police" rules that only seem to set alot of people up for failure. She encourages healthy choices in food, but you are not condemned to failure if you want to eat "normal" everyday dishes like pizza, stuffed chicken, burgers, or even desserts like cheesecake! On the contrary. You get to eat these type of things plus more and still lose weight! It's all about using the right foods! No gimmicks, expensive pills, formulas, calorie counting, starvation, or having to purchase pre packaged foods. That's all out the door! Her previously released cookbook takes all the guesswork out for you with easy-to-follow recipes, and I would encourage you to check that out also. As a member of her online group, I can tell you after losing 100 pounds on this lifestyle that it really works! I am on my third year, and have been at my goal weight now for two. I had all but given up after failing to keep the weight off after two weight loss surgeries and a million and two diets! My highest weight was 270 pounds. Not good for a 5'3" woman! I now keep my weight right around 115 now and still love this lifestyle. Read this book. It is a game changer for anyone wanting to finally get control over their weight with something that actually works!
Having already been on my own keto journey, I wanted to see what made Laska's different, or "dirty" and "lazy". And Laska's method will work, but I think she missed the boat because she didn't take the chance to really explain to people the science behind keto. And without that, you can still reap the benefits, but it seems to take longer. The things that she missed were explaining that to be most effective in losing weight, you first lower your carbs, get keto adapted, and then lower your fat intake, too. Because when you do that, you force your body to use the fat stores you have. Second, she totally skips over intermittent fasting, which is a tool that, again, really helps you dig into those fat stores.
Other than that, the book is pretty decent for how to get into keto, how it works, and lots of encouragement to spur people on.
But she's dead wrong about Kerrygold butter-- it's TOTALLY WORTH it, and no other butter I've ever had compares.
I was thrilled to receive an advanced reader copy of this book. I have all of Stephanie's previous books.
EXCELLENT Book!! Stephanie really upped the support with this book. It is filled from cover to cover with tips and encouragement. She shares her journey and provides everything you need to follow her path to sustained weight loss.
Her writing style makes it feel like you are talking to a best friend - someone with your best at heart. She is honest (no sunshine-blowing here), witty and sensitive. She gets it and wants you to get it, too.
There is no judgment here. It is such a straightforward, realistic, and sustainable approach to keto. The book is all about helping you find what works best for you. One of my favorite Stephanie quotes is "you don't have to be perfect to be successful". Start from where you are right now. It's surprisingly easy to move in the right direction with Stephanie leading the way.
