Fugitive. Criminal. Robot.

Eve looks like an ordinary 12-year-old girl, but there’s nothing ordinary about her. She has no last name. No parents or guardian. She’s on the run from a dangerous and secretive organization that will stop at nothing to track her down.

And most astonishing of all: She’s a robot, a product of Eden Labratories.

When she discovers the truth, she realizes everything she thought she knew about herself is a lie. Eve manages to escape, fleeing the lab, the only home she’s ever known.

After being arrested for shoplifting, Eve is interviewed by Petra Amis from Child Welfare Services. Her incredible story unfolds during the interrogation, with flashbacks to her life inside Eden Laboratories, which has a dark secret.

Exploring a range of topics that drive our society and our lives - topics such as artificial intelligence and human nature - Interview with the Robot is a story told by a startlingly original protagonist, a story that explores the vast potential of technology and the deep complexities of humanity.

Interview with the Robot by Lee Bacon, narrated very nicely, within intonations and moods by the cast of readers. It is an excellent listening on Audible, great for children. I have listened to this audiobook with my eight-year-old son on repeat already several times.

“Family isn't just parents and kids. It's not only DNA. Real family, the family that matters... it's about the connection we make to people. A connection that's so strong, it might just rewrite your programming.”

Interview with the Robot (Audiobook) by Lee Bacon | Audible.com

Having recently read Walter Isaacson's The Innovators with its numerous discussions of the Turing Test (and Stan Lee's A Trick of Light with its emphasis on AI), it was fun to read Lee Bacon's Interview with the Robot. I thought the conversations between '12-year old Eve' and CWS social worker Petra Amis were quite well done. I liked the first half or so really well. It was light-hearted and enjoyable; however, I was less convinced about some of the twists that came later. 3.5 stars

Interview with the Robot
By: Lee Bacon
Narrated by a cast of performers
This is a story for preteen/teen but adults would like it too! It's about a girl being interviewed at a jail for stealing. The interview tells the story of why she was stealing, who she was running from, where she came from, and more! Great sci fi story!
The narration cast performance was excellent!

A fun & exciting little young adult/sci-fi that was a free audible offer.

I may have rated it lower, had I read it in print, but as a full-cast audible production, it was very well dramatised.

The fact that it was not too long (just short of 4 hours) is also one of its advantages.

Recommended.

Eve isn't the typical 12-year old girl. After being arrested for shop-lifting, she calmly explains her actions and her background to a child welfare worker. Eve has no parents or family. Never had a last name. Doesn't eat. Doesn't drink. She's a robot.....and on the run.

I listened to the audio Audible Original performance of this story. The full-cast performance was quite entertaining and fun to listen to! The story is definitely geared toward middle grade age kids, but still enjoyable for adults. The portions of the story about tech concepts and robotics are simplified and not very realistic.....but this is a fictional children's story, not a tech journal.

The voice actors give a great performance. The length (just under 4 hours) makes this an easy listen. I had a great time listening to Eve tell her story while doing laundry, cooking and cleaning at home. The story definitely brightened up a rainy, cold Monday!

Very entertaining story!

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this Audible Original, but it wasn't disappointing. The narrators kept it entertaining and enjoyable to listen. It was a fun story about an AI girl that had the appearance of being 12 years old. It was her story from her beginning and how she came to be what or who she was.

It was fun to listen to her evolve from where she started to what she became and to those around her. It takes place with her sitting in a police station interview room and talking about who or what she is to a children's services officer. It was fun and the characters that you get to know are interesting. It definitely had some twists that I was not expecting and others that were pretty obvious.

All in all, this was a fun listen and it was an easy listen for work. I did enjoy it.

Fugitive. Criminal. Robot.

4 Stars!!

Really enjoyed this little gem! I picked this out as one of my freebies from Audible this month. Sometimes the selection is not that great so I got this with hopes that it would be an alright read and it ended up surprising me!!

I really liked the layout of the audio- it was in interview format with time lapses that made it feel like you were actually there. This is probably considered a middle grade read and I cant wait for my boys to give it a listen. Although some of it was a little predictable, it still fully entertained me! I think anyone would enjoy this audible original!

If you ever wonder how far people can go with AI, this is the book you can definitely give a shot to.

Petra Amis, a child welfare officer, has been sent to interview a twelve year old shoplifter. Imagine her surprise when she discovered that the human-looking, human-sounding, human-behaving person in front of her is actually a robot named Eve. The interview proceeds to reveal Eve's back story, about how this ordinary looking girl has such an extraordinary origin in Eden Laboratories, how she is equipped to handle anything, and why she is a fugitive from that organisation.

Within 3 hrs 42 minutes, this audiobook takes you through a gamut of emotions. It's serious, it's funny, it's shocking, and it even makes you wonder! It's not just the complexities of AI but the tangled thought processes of human nature too that are at display in this book.Though it is aimed at middle-graders, the story is gripping enough to keep even adults hooked. While some of the plot twists were guessable, some caused me to gasp, stunned!

The audio version is impeccable. The various narrators who lent their performance to bring the characters to life do their job flawlessly. Every single character had the perfect articulation. Add to this the various background sound effects and you feel like you are listening to a show. This was definitely a treat to hear.

A 4.5 from me.

This was actually pretty good. It definitely reminded me of the movie Replicas.. which features Keanu Reeves. No idea why that movie came to mind while listening to it but it probably had to deal with the whole robot family. Or child and soon to be mother. Not quite sure where Eve fits into this picture.

That being said, this sci-fi adventure was dark and fun to listen to. In it, you will meet Eve who is not quite a girl.. and not quite a robot. She's adapting to every little thing that she learns and she definitely has spunk. Maybe even sarcasm. Throughout the book, she is telling the story of how she became her. Then we get some little twist and turns about what happened along the way.

Again, it was interesting and I really enjoyed this one. Definitely a good audible original and look forward to the next book by Lee.

The whole thing is mediocre, but it has a good twist.

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I see a movie or read a book that so perfectly represents its genre, I impulsively measure all other stories to that. For example, I can’t watch an indie musical without comparing it to Once or Sing Street. I can’t read magical realism without comparing it to anything by Murakami. And I can’t read a story about robots without comparing it to Her or Ex Machina. Interview With The Robot just doesn’t compare.

I almost gave it an even lower rating, but that wouldn’t be entirely fair. There was probably a point in my life where I would have enjoyed this. I’m just not there anymore. Because of that, I don’t want to be mean with my rating or review. I’ll just point out a couple things that really irk me about it.

First of all, I realize this is meant for pre-teens, but I think a lot of people underestimate how much complexity kids can handle. Look at Harry Potter. Anyway ...

I reject the entire idea of a story based around an interview. I didn’t realize the entire story would be dialogue, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have read it. When stories are told as interviews, the interviewer and interviewee don’t actually talk like humans. They don’t tell stories the way a human would. All of their lines sound like narration, both the robots and human characters. So why not just use a normal story structure?

One of my monthly audible original choices. Quick and unique read. Definitely wasn’t expecting that ending. Loved all the sci-fi jargan, and the analyzation of what it means to be a human, and what it means to have a family.

I kept imagining the protagonist to be Alita: Battle Angel! (a good movie btw). The story is generally predictable, with one good twist, but the presentation was superb. A short and good read listen.
I'm looking forward to the time when audiobooks become interactive. Like a Black Mirror: Bandersnatch but for audio. Seems like a promising pathway, especially with text generation technology on the rise.

This book album? is recommended.

Omg. This was so much fun! I loved Lee's other audible original, "The Mystery of Alice." so I had to read this one. :D And it was amazing. I highly recommend "Interview with the robot" for a family-friendly science fiction adventure. :D

The story starts with a child welfare worker interviewing a 12-year-old girl. Who is a lot more interesting then she seems. Then, we start learning Eve's backstory. She's a super-intelligent, super-advanced, super-realistic robot. And she's on the run.

Throughout the book, we learn more and more about her and it's just an amazing piece of middle-grade science fiction. And the big action scene towards the end? That was awesome.

I seriously love audiobooks and nearly all of the audible originals for kids I've listened to have blown me away. "Interview with the Robot" is no exception.

The book starts with a girl being interviewed by a police officer as she was found stealing, and she explains that she committed this crime as she was running away. I appreciated the voice of the narrators who all did a great job and Eve was absolutely perfect, she really seemed a robot. I must say that I am not so keen on audible books as I prefer reading from a book, maybe I am too sentimental but books for me are the best and the most loyal friends you can have and they illuminate my life, that is why I prefer them. I could never change books with e-books .

This story is one of January’s free Audible Originals selection.

This sci-fi adventure about a twelve year old girl who is actually a robot is told in interview snippets and flashbacks. The fun and at times dark story is about friendship, family, and agency. It was an entertaining and short, three hour story.

Eve is, apparently, a twelve-year-old girl, who gets arrested stealing an unlikely variety of items at a tourist gift shop in New York City. Since she's obviously a minor, and claims to have no parents, no guardian, and no last name, the only thing to do is call Child Welfare Services.

Petra Amis is the CWS social worker assigned to interview her. When she insists she wants the truth, no matter how bonkers it sounds, she gets a truly wild tale.

Eve does take the sensible precaution of first demonstrating that she really is a robot, by opening up a section of her arm and showing the metal, wires, and circuits inside.

What follows is the story of her origin in the labs of Eden Laboratories, the brainchild of engineer David Sharpe, who lost his wife in a car crash several years ago. It's also the story of Emory Sharpe, David's son, who was at a boarding school in New Hampshire when his mother died in the crash.

Or maybe he wasn't. It gradually becomes clear that David Sharpe has a goal both more and less ambitious than merely making humans safer.

Eve's progress from a small gray box on a shelf, to a fully mobile, apparently completely human child, alongside the gradual revelation of what really happened in the car crash and how unhealthy his reaction has been, makes for a compelling listen. The narrators are all excellent, and add to the creation of Eve, Emory, and those around them. It makes for a very compelling listen.

Recommended.

Different Take than Emergence
Review of the Audible Original audiobook edition (January 2020)

The synopsis reads like this will be a very similar story to the opening episodes of the 2019 television show Emergence but it actually goes a different route entirely so it wasn't the copycat that I had initially thought. Saying much more would be a spoiler though.

The cast of narrators were all excellent in their roles. The occasional robotic voices were somewhat monotonous but were in keeping with the parts. There was an extended "gee-whiz" phase in teenage Emory's voice which also felt overplayed but which again was only temporary.

Interview with the Robot was an Audible Original short story audiobook that was available free to members in January 2020. It is available to everyone for purchase.

I really enjoyed listening to this one. It may be intended for a much younger audience but that shouldn't stop anyone just like it didn't stop me!

Eve looks like a 12 yo. She has been caught shoplifting and so Petra Amis from the CPS is interviewing her. The thing is, Eve is not like other tweens; she isn't even a child actually but a robot equipped with Artificial Intelligence and made in Eden laboratories.

Touching on the human technology interface and how much is too much, this is a riveting ride through how Eve came into being, the people who made her, the reasons for her existence and the truth that took her from the lab, into the city and to her present location.

The narration is the fun element more than anything; it is just like watching it play out on a screen or listening to a radio show with all the side effects. The voices are fabulous.
Definitely a must listen whether you are interested in trying out audio books or already love them. And, irrespective of what age you are!
