Ryan Casey is the author of over a dozen novels and a highly successful serial. He writes gritty post-apocalyptic fiction, throwing normal people into devastating situations and exploring how they react and adapt. He has also written several detective mysteries and thrillers. Across all genres, Casey's work is renowned for its rapid pacing, unforgettably complex characters, and knockout twists.
Casey lives in the United Kingdom. He has a BA degree in English with Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham, and has been writing stories for as long as he can remember. In his spare time, he can be spotted walking his West Highland White Terrier, has a passion for cinema and television, and probably spends a little bit too much time in the pub.
As I was reading this second book, it occurred to me that only 3 or 4 days have elapsed since the EMP and it seems like Britain fell into complete, lawless chaos very quickly. I could see it in the big cities perhaps, but all of these smaller towns and villages have that many criminals waiting to pounce? They must hide it well the many, many times I have been there. This book 2 does start to weave the separate story lines together a little better, though a proofreader would still be helpful.
Well, if you’re a fan of the premise of Mystery Science Theater wherein movies that present themselves unironically are made fun of because they are so horribly hard to take seriously. This book would be a great candidate for that if MST did book reviews. I’m giving two stars here because the author persisted in writing a second installment, and that definitely deserves a participation star.
The good: I like the post apocalyptic fiction genre, and I’ve read pretty much the entirety of this genre, so hey, it was cool to find a new series.
The bad: Every character in it. Perhaps I’m smarter than the average bear here, but I can’t imagine people losing their collective poo over three days with no power. I live in an area where climate change storms knock out the power at least once a year, and while living 4 days without power really sucked when tornadoes blew through here 5 years ago, nobody took to the streets and raided their neighbors or local stores for food. It didn’t happen either when we lost power for OVER A WEEK when I was a teenager. We just saved what we could, were very grateful we had a wood stove to heat our house, and played lots of board games. So when every character can’t figure out the simplest of things… like finding food, or characters suddenly drop unconscious at precariously timed intervals to add to the feeling of tension or conflict… yeah it really is written that badly. Add in the fact that if you’re inhaling while doing the mouth-to-mouth portion of CPR after basic medical training you really are an idiot. Don’t even get me started on the emotional “depths” plumbed by one 20-something character after he holds someone’s hand in a traumatic world-changing event and then berates himself repeatedly for having done so when his One True Mission is to track down the chick who (rightfully) dumped his loser ass before the world started to end.
tl;dr nobody in this book has character depths beyond “the last character they interacted with told them ‘X’ and therefore this is now their holy mantra”, and none of the characters are in any way relatable because as a real human here, it’s hard to interact with 2-D paper dolls and call them human.
If you can leave a series unfinished I recommend you only read the first two books. Book 3 ruins everything.
Spoilers
I was skeptical of all the gratuitous violence. All the constant horrific things that kept happening. It was too much. More than could be believable. But book 2 ends on a reasonable enough high note considering what happenned next...
Then book 3 happenned. I'll be direct. Sorry. Jack and Logan end up in a war over the death of one of Logan's people. We find out that Logan has been lying to himself about the circumstances of his imprisonment. The false narrative really pissed me off! As the reader you are convinced that Logan is on a Redemption Journey or at the very least was wrongfully imprisoned. Wrong! He killed them, he murdered the wife and the daughter in front of the husband before he killed him. And then he just decided to convince himself that he didn't do it. I really don't like that the author manipulated his readers this way. Jack utilizes some really bad guys to try and get Logan killed simply because Logan refuses to give up his revenge. And then Jack and his family lose the farm. Logan shoots Wayne and then Wayne dies. Logan gets shot in the chest and still can't let s*** go. So of course, Logan decides to shoot Jack in the chest. Emma Frisch's Logan to the ground and Jack ends up stabbing Logan in the throat. Logan dies. The bad guys took over the farm are convinced to help keep Jack alive. The book ends with Jack and his ex-wife and the girls walking off for greener pastures. This book was awful. I gave it three stars because I actually liked book 1 and 2. It doesn't help that Logan and Wayne were my favorite characters. Just saying
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It is the second day after the EMP. The world is falling apart quickly. Looting. Murders. Gangs. Fires. How long will it take for civilization to collapse?
With the sheer amount of chaos that is happening in the book there are a surprising lot of casual meetings of the characters. I realize with such a huge cast of characters and an equally huge setting, sometimes the author has to force situations but sometimes they were way too neatly arranged. On the other hand EVERYTHING that could possibly go wrong does. The author has a very pessimistic view of humanity. I almost set this book down several times. Just as the characters seem to be getting things going in the right direction another terrible thing would happen. It got overwhelming and hard to read it was so depressing. The characters are believable and likable. The story is just very violent and at times depressing.
Triggers and Rating Triggers- Throats slit. Shoot in the stomach. A woman is kidnapped and it is implied she will be raped. Rating -R - Language. Adult situations. Violent graphic murders.
4.0- STARS- SPOILERS This second installment was fantastic! It picked up right where the first book left off and took a more realistic turn. There were more deaths, more abductions, and characters had to confront their pasts to move ahead. Many characters evolved, realizing that the old ways are gone and a new reality focused on survival is now. I really enjoy how the groups have formed, especially Logan finding Emma and joining a group. It's amusing that it's an all-girls group, but I'm glad Logan feels appreciated. While I was sad about some characters not making it, I'm relieved that most of my favorites are still safe. I loved that Wayne went back for the cat and the girl, and I'm thrilled that he might finally reunite with his parents. I can't wait to dive into the next series!
The second book continued to be boring despite the interesting characters. But It felt like they just aimlessly wander around. And in those moments, the small inconsistencies stand out. Like why Logan never thought to change his clothing, out of prison gear? Or why at times it seems they don’t need much food or water to survive. At times the author is more focused on their psychological struggles than on what a daily struggle it is to satisfy the bodily functions and needs. And not to mention the medical consequences, the aches, blisters and muscle cramps that walking around like that would cause. Not to mention being additionally injured. It’s a bit melodramatic.
After The FAll Book 2 by Ryan Casey was as well written as the first book in the series. Mr. Casey keep my interest throughout the whole book. He kept his characters straight and easy to Renner. He did not constantly repeat himself like some authors do. A must rezd
Pretty good story line and effective delivery. But the one -sentence -thought -repetition got to be bore.... The interaction between the characters was not comfortable. It felt forced and not grounded in stable thinking....more in fantasy.
I enjoyed this storytelling and look forward to the next adventure coming. Jack and Hazel have taken back the farm and Waynes has reunited with Bella and Mrs Fuzzles. Logan has met up with Emma, Candice and Jean.
I enjoyed the book a lot. The characters and plotting was well set up. Only one big problem... There were lots of typos name mix how etc. It had me going back several paragraphs to make sure I was reading it right. Fix those and it will be even better.
I don't know what to tell you. This is not a good book. The plot is all over the place, characters flip personalities constantly, ever book a character died- its basically a bingeable low quality Netflix show in book form. But I like it.
A lot of blood and death but not as bad as some. The characters are interesting and relatable, the storyline intriguing and mostly plausible. A good read.
