There were no women left. He was sure of it. After the war, Cole Tanner was pretty damn certain they were all dead.

Hell, he and his strike team hadn't seen one in years.

But then there she was. A woman. All alone, standing in the middle of the road. His road.

She looked so haunting. So hungry and dirty, and well... vulnerable. He was going to help her, really he was. And for a split second, he wondered just how she'd survived.

Then she leveled the gun at him... and he had his answer. Damsel in distress? Apparently not.

But that didn't change things, not how Cole saw it.  No, she still needed him, and his team. Same as they needed her. And Cole was nothing if not good at convincing people to follow him. Or at least, he used to be.

So he'd try his hand one more time, and hope like hell she didn't pull that trigger.

Cliffhanger but not for me

End of the road for me for this story. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this. I was really liking the romance until they deserved iced to share. She decided to share because she is the only woman and Cole and her are falling in love and I really was into that and the other men were getting jealous so she goes to bed with Coles best friend and she liked it. now she loves both men and That was it for me. I don't care where she came from and I don't really care how it ends. Glad it was short and free. Something different for sure but just not for me. The writing was good though and kept me engaged... until it didn't.

Strong characters, possible government mass-manipulation, a world war, soldiers, and a lone woman with mysterious patterns down her spine. The world building is fabulous, the characters and dialogue are very well written.
It has been five years since Cole had last held a woman, three since he’d seen one alive.
Cole and his band of rogue soldiers know they’re being followed. By the look of the footprints, they think it’s a boy.

Hannah is very confused. At first you think it’s because she is starving to death or that she might have a concussion but there is a mystery to her. I loved the weaving of this story. You are given a few flashbacks to fill-in some of the answers, the rest is left to your imagination. Hannah is deeply afraid and can only remember the last 8 months of her life. Sometimes she’ll see an object, and it will give her a flashback, but nothing really gives her any definitive answers on who she is and what her life was like.

The story is slow moving, with lots of world and character building. I will say there are two men involved with her by the end of the story, not a menage or a love triangle. Those scenes are actually really lovely and done well. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I’m gonna be throwing money at my kindle to get the rest of the books. I might need a second job to support my reading habit.

This book sucked me in pretty quickly and actually held my attention, which is a lot for me right now. And it's surprising because I tend to enjoy character driven stories, and for me, it was definitely the dystopian set up, mystery, and premise of the story (females are almost nonexistent) that grabbed and held my attention. You gradually get to see more into the key characters, but it's a very slow unwrapping, and you'll still feel like you've barely begun to unwrap them at the cliffhanger ending. The focus seems to be on finding women for most of the men (after they discover there are more out there). The group of guys you're following have done some despicable things to stay alive, but they have nothing but respect for women. They have been 5 years without seeing a single one, so they are each just longing for women in their lives.
There's also the fact that the one woman they've found has amnesia. And she has code on her back - the same code that they were receiving as soldiers prior to their last mission in the war that destroyed it all.
And the leader of the guys, Cole, discovers that his guys are going to defect on him since they all see what he has with the new girl, Hannah. The only way to keep them sticking around till he has a thorough plan in place is to agree to share Hannah with one of the other guys. This is Hannah's idea and her choice. But, that doesn't mean Cole is okay with it. And add into the mix that the other guy is his best friend, Liam...
I'm definitely curious to see where this story is going!

It’s really tough writing a novel with purposefully blank spaces in the character backgrounds/plot/world building in order to provide plot points later. When done well it can be very engaging while you wait to find all the answers but unfortunately in this novel I don’t feel like it was executed. I enjoyed the premise more than anything but everything else fell flat.

The overwhelming misogyny didn’t help

After finishing Claire Kent's post-apocalyptic series I was looking for something else to scratch that itch. Boy did I find it! Loved the book and moving onto the next book in the series immediately!

Loved the premise, was not a fan of the execution. The blurb was so exciting and I was ready to love this book, it started out great and went downhill from there.

There was world-building but it was all done in these long paragraphs like a lot was said but not much of the important stuff. Why did the war start, and who started it? Where does the story take place, and what's happening in other parts of the world? How many people survived? What's happening with the war at this moment? Where did all the children and women go?

I didn't vibe with the characters. I liked Hannah but the more the story went on the emptier her character felt. I don't know how to describe it but she was great in the first chapters with her POV. Maybe there should have been more focus on her because she is the center of the entire plot.
Cole was a stale ass piece of white bread, he was nothing special. Liam was my favorite character cause we love a dark-haired bad boy.
Hannah and Cole had no chemistry, they were together because Cole was the one who went after her. And she only likes him cause he saved her and she simply felt safe with Cole after surviving alone for months. Cole partly wanted her cause she was the only surviving woman.
Hannah and Liam on the other hand... so much chemistry, they had their dislike-to-lovers moments. Liam actually had respect for Hannah and didn't treat her like a walking-talking vagina.

The main thing to take away from this book is that men are easily swayed if they have the possibility to get some. Way they assumed that Hannah would have sex with them just cause 'she's the only woman left on earth'.
There were so many time jumps so we didn't get to see the relationships develop naturally. Hannah arrives at the camp and then the next chapter is days later and then a month later.

I wanted to DNF this at around 40% but I paid for this book so you bet your ass I was gonna finish it.

Holy shit what was that???

I just finished this first installment and I am just gobsmacked at how into this book I was. An end of the world, post apocalypse, one woman many men type romance that was completely believable and human in the telling? Hot damn...I’ve found a unicorn folks!

This book is gritty and pragmatic and borders on dark, but it’s also full of a weird kind of hope and just sucks you in. The prose flows so smoothly, and the characters are each so distinct.

But the main thing...the real kicker...the make or break detail...the main female character is not a Princess Mary Sue.

Thank the gods.

And isn’t it amazing that an author can write a book of this ilk without making it seem like the woman in it has some sort of magical cat hidden in her trousers that everyone who meets her falls instantly in love with? I mean, the men are all into her...she’s the only woman on Earth and they haven’t seen one in years, what man wouldn’t be perked up by that? But they don’t all just fall headlong into some fate-driven pit of vaginal hypnosis. Amazing.

I’m grabbing the next book and I am PRAYING that things keep going as they are and that the story doesn’t get twisted into the usual tropes that are so boring these days.

*** I am impressed with the editing as well. Books these days have been butchering spelling and grammar to the point of disgust and distraction.

Bravo!

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

If you do not like cliff-hangers then this book is not for you. However i can certainly say that this new to me author really swept me away with her writing and world building after a war has decimated the human population and there are virtually no females left in the world.

Hannah has been on the run hiding and scrounging food where she can, especially after Andy her husband died. It is in following some men carefully and getting their scraps that she finds herself caught. Without a memory past the last year, things are hard for Hannah

The men however are kinder than she thought they would be, Cole gains her trust and her heart, however Liam enters the picture when she suddenly remembers that she has seen one other woman.

The book reads fairly quickly and the scene is set very well with good description along with good world building.

I am really looking forward to reading the next book, especially after the cliff hanger!

DNF AT 84%. What a disappointment!! I should’ve listen to the other comments and not have started reading this!!

-weak world building:
No information on why women and children had died during the war?
-weak characters:
Hannah was so one-dimensional and i could not understand how she just “gave herself up” just for cole to keep his leader position??
-Cuckold MMC:
Sorry but how did Cole even agree to “sharing” hannah with the others?? This is beyond me. And the stupid advice by coockie? Ridiculous. Smh 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I could go on for ever why this was lacking in almost every part!! ( even the 🌶️ was written so poorly!! Just leave it out at this point if you are not able to write it well)

The initial idea has so much potential but this book is a failed attempt to bring it to life.

The author should just try to write it new from scrap. I will definitely not read the follow-up books even this was a torture to read ! And i rarely dnf my books!!

Cole and Hannah

This book will keep you from doing anything else. I couldn't turn to the next page quick enough. To think of how Hannah could have survived for so long on her own not feeling safe enough to approach any men. Now she's with good men who will protect her, but she can't remember anything past six months ago. Now she's with Cole and they have to venture back out taking Hannah with them so she can try to remember where she saw another woman in a cage with evil men surrounding her. I need to get to the next book in this Series as I can stay up all night reading. This isn't my usual type of book that I love to read but LK Magill has made this a fascinating experience and I will be reading the rest of this Series, but I will now be following this Author for more!

Great world-building and nuanced, realistic characters

I was completely engrossed by this story. The main characters - Hannah, Cole, and Liam - grow more and more interesting as they deal with themselves, their situations, and each other. The nuanced realism of their POVs and interactions with each other and the other men in their group captured my mind and heart. Friendship, trust, loyalty, and love are challenged and strengthened by the need to survive and live more fully human lives.

A super well written, very enjoyable start to this so far brilliant series! Not my normal choice of cover, but the blurb grabbed me. I was very pleased I did not judge this story by it's cover! Great characters, excellent ideas & plotlines. A really great read! I will look for more by this writer & do strongly recommend to all that love end of the world but with a twist of romance. An excellent story!

"And in the end, it was that exact slip of awareness that cost her. It was Andy’s memory, the thing that had happened to him. It made her blind to her surroundings. That and the hunger of course. And the weakness. And the death that hung all around her.
For standing in front of her now, where there had once been an empty road, was a horseman. He had come down from the mountainside, taking cover in the brush where she should have been hiding. While her mind was off somewhere else, he stepped out of the thickness, guiding his mount to the middle of the road, where he then stopped and eyed her.
(...) the man only raised his eyebrows, his crystal green eyes registering a touch of surprise. A sweep of chestnut hair peeked out from beneath his faded ball cap and a short beard covered his chin. Though the jeans and navy-blue jacket he wore were decidedly dirty, the black rifle that was slung over his shoulder looked impeccably clean.
Hannah’s eyes absorbed all of these details before falling to lock on the pair of tall brown boots that protected his feet. Of all the things that he had and she didn’t, she envied his shoes the most.
“I didn’t think there were any of you left,” he said, shifting slightly in the saddle.
(...) Andy had told her time and again that if it came to this, she had to run. Everything inside of her urged her to do so now. She should be backing away.
But then an inner voice sounded, its tone was one of defeat. How far would she get really? With the man on the horse full of food and water, what were her odds? That answer was easy. Too easy.
But that didn’t mean she had to speak to him. And the gun would buy her a few more minutes anyway. A few precious minutes with which to make a final decision.
(...) Suddenly everything wanted to go blurry on her. Her vision rippled and wavered but she fought hard to keep it clear. Choices, choices. It’s time to make a choice.
“You’re hungry,” the man said gently. “Do you want some food? We’ll feed you. I promise no one will hurt you.”
(...) she wanted so very badly to believe him. She wanted to eat and to feel safe. But the reality of the world she found herself in was that nowhere was safe for her. Nowhere. She had seen that first hand, right?
Despite all of the things she could no longer remember, at least she recalled that much.
So with a final push of strength, Hannah opened her eyes wide and sucked in a sharp breath. Jerking back the gun, she pressed it’s cold barrel against her own temple. There was only one way to be safe without Andy to protect her, just like he had always said. Only one way.
“No, no!” The man spread out his hands, imploring. His horse jumped and danced about. “You’re starving to death and you’re scared. Maybe you’ve come across some bad men, but we aren’t like them. Please.”
For a moment she held his gaze, let her soul reach out and connect with his. There was something about him, if you really took the time to look, she thought, before squeezing her eyes shut and pulling the trigger."

Chivalry and good, real men are not dead after all
A 5*+ read, Outlasting After: A Strike Team Three Novel (Outlasting Series Book 1) by LK Magill is a very well written post apocalyptic romance that features a group of eight men demonstrating that while the world as they know it might have died, real men have not. This group of men have been together for years thinking all women had been eliminated until Hannah happens along. She may cause some strife within to begin with, but as she comes out of her shell a bit, she quickly becomes the voice of reason as well as the glue the binds the group, making them stronger. Tough decisions lead to an unconventional arrangement, however, it turns out it may just be the best solution for situation and the world the way it is.
The plot of this story, especially Hannah’s unknown history and how it is essentially integral, is slowly revealed. As they all interact, each of these characters, their personalities and talents are discovered and new friendships are forged with Hannah. It’s clear each has a role to play and is integral to the survival in this messed up war ravaged world they find themselves in. Everything about this book is captivating and enthralling. Each character is engaging, full of goodness and heart. The storyline is compelling with it’s suspense and mystery and especially because of the cliffhanger. Things are coming together, yet we are left with even more questions! Questions that can only be answered by continuing the series and that is a must for this reader as I am completely invested in these characters, even (or especially because of) the two rescued women.
Overall, a very well written book with tons of feels, lots of heart, blended in with suspense and the danger of discovery. Although not the typical HEA, Book 1 ends with not only a promise for more, but the promise that while the road may be long and hard, it’s going to be good too for Hannah, Cole and Liam.
I read an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems and voluntarily share my review.

Wow. What a good book.

This isn't even the type of book I normally go for but wow, what a good read. A few grammatical errors in it, but you won't even care because it's that interesting. You know someone's a good writer when they can actually get some kind of emotional response from someone while they're reading. I chuckled/smirked twice and had a couple of aches in my chest because I could feel for the characters at certain moments. I almost don't want to read the rest of the series because I'm worried it won't live up to this one.

*Slight spoiler*
A woman does basically end up in a relationship with more than one person. So those men share her, and I'm normally not for it in books because they make it seem so easy and natural when it wouldn't normally go like that in real life or even in the scenarios in the book. But I do feel like it was more acceptable given the situation presented in the book, like the "end of the world" and "potentially last woman in the world" thing. I also feel like it was more realistic because how the characters handled it. They weren't just instantly okay with it and fine with one second her being all over one and then another second all over the other one. Things like that.

Alone. Not a good thing for a female. Hannah trailed the group of men, hoping for...what? Andy told her never to get caught, never be alone with a male. He would hurt her. Andy was gone and she was starving. When she makes a mistake, Cole finds her. He protects her, feeds her, and cares for her. Can she trust him? What about the others? Hannah finds her groove within the compound of men. She helps where she can, but doesn't remember a lot from her past. The men are divided when Cole takes Hannah as his own. She needs to do something to bring them back together. She has nothing to offer other than herself. What if there are other women out there?

Cole and Liam are childhood friends. They are brothers in arms, yet a small woman can tear them apart. Liam is NOT happy with Hannah showing up. Another mouth to feed. Yes, a female that they thought were all gone. Yet her she is, on Cole's horse, in his cabin, and in his bed. Maybe it was jealousy? Maybe it was longing?

At the beginning of the book, I really liked Cole for taking care of Hannah. Halfway through the book, I shifted to liking Liam. The book and characters are enjoyable. I really like Cookie. Hannah's mystery is a good tease.

providing an honest review after receiving a complementary copy from the author via BookFunnel.

this book was book one in a series so don't know the story ends, this book was ok but I did not enjoy it enough for me to pay to get the next book.

I think this would have been better as one book rather then multiple books in a series

few plot holes.
why did she have no memory?
If women are so few why are they not treated better?
where was the business savvy women who would have set up a high class brothel? come on there is always a strong smart madam making money and controlling all the men in places where there is few women such a historical cowboy frontier type stories.
What happened to cause the world to be as it is in this story?

in the original couple (Hannah and Cole) there is chemistry. the second couple (Hannah and Liam) Liam seems really into her and she keeps telling the Cole she is doing it for him. does she have feelings for both guys? or is she just using Liam to save Cole and her self?

I liked the Liam character the best and I hope she come to like him as much as he likes her.

I would be interested in reading more from this author if they were stand alone books instead of book in a series

Hannah is alone in a war torn country. A country where woman are almost extinct. She can't remember anything beyond 6 months prior. She falls into the path of a defected group of military men. They take her to their base where she learns to open up and trust them. She tells them of a woman in a cage she came across but then ran from. As Hannah becomes intimate with two of the men, the rest decide they want a chance at romance too, so the group decides to find the woman in the cage. All the while Hannah and the men are trying to find out where Hannah came from and what happened during the time she can't remember. There's also the mystery of the military commands that were being blindly followed before the group defected because of a command to take out the group's leader, their brother in arms.

For me, this was one of those books I stayed up all night to finish. It does end on a cliffhanger with the promise of finding out more about Hannah's past. I anticipate more woman being added to the group in the next book and learning more about their chosen men of the group.

I really enjoyed the story. The concept of no women left is interesting. I liked that these guys are a deadly strike team. They have actual remorse for the bad things they have done to survive. The heroine is spunky and is definitely a sleeper. I love both heroes. The secondary characters were compelling. Each has their own interesting back story. The world building is a bit weak because not much is shared to the reader. I was confused about what happened to her. The heroine is allowed to NOT tell anyone that she lost her memory for months. I’m a little miffed that it ended without telling us anything. This is a cheap way to make the reader buy into the next book. Shame on you the author. The sex scenes are really lacking. The concept has me hooked though. I’m going to give the author another chance to redeem herself.

This is... interesting. The concept alone, while giving me chills, hits me with this strange sense of 'That could happen'. A cataclysmic war that decimated the population, while time, violence, sickness and situations eradicate the women. It's a terrifying thought and leads to the notion that in the end, we'll have more monsters than men... a very real truth this group of survivors is dealing with. And what happens when one of those fabled women is found?

Such are the questions and troubles featured in Outlasting After. Add in the dynamic personalities, along with a brewing mystery of both future and past - and you have a dystopian novel that asks more questions than it answers. In fact, just when it seemed we were getting somewhere, the book ends, leaving a dangling cliffhanger and a bucket full of angst.

I thought the premise for Outlasting After was fabulous – it would be a really interesting experience if there was some sort of post-apocalyptic warfare that led to the extermination of almost all women. And I love the apocalyptic romance subgenre – it tends to provide a lot of action, suspense, and then you can also have a romance on the side. Here, I thought the world was interesting. The romance planted dynamics in the existing male group that were honestly pretty plausible in the sense that there probably would be a lot of internal conflicts amongst the men in that scenario. However, the overall mood of the book was almost one of despondency and it wasn’t really fun to read. Like, I get that it would be a really violent and turbulent society if the apocalypse occurred but this was almost sad to read. So it was pretty well done but I don’t think this is the series for me.

Where do I even start...
So for one thing, the “sharing women” thing seriously cheapens the romance and the lack of monogamy almost had me stop reading. Except I couldn’t because I was invested and this book is well written. It certainly keeps your attention!
I saw previous reviews saying: major cliffhanger!!! No one likes a cliffhanger but this wasn’t even set up as one! This was literally like the book just stopped in the wrong place. I was startled when it ended because it made no sense to end it there. It’s like the author got busy and just suddenly stopped writing.
But still 4 stars because I was totally invested and entertained.

Not Your Average Romance

As a prolific reader of all types of romance books I am constantly looking for new reading materials. So when this book showed up in my Amazon recommendations I downloaded it assuming it would be more of the same cliche romances usually suggested. However by the end of the first chapter I could feel this book was different and I was hooked. The dystopian story line adds lots opportunities for mystery and intrigue.

Be forewarned that this book ends in a major cliffhanger. Luckily the next book in the series is already out and available to be devoured.

A definite page turned

This story gripped me from the very start. Hannah struggling to stay alive fearful of everyone and thing and for good reason. Cole. Is their leader, Liam his childhood friend and himself the most lethal killing machine of the group. Cookie is the oldest and the snipped of the group. Chan, Trey, Davey, and Ryder. These are the men that detected in their own once the realized that Command had sent then on a suicide mission. They were they elite of all the men. But command had wanted them dead. Then Cole found Hannah, starved, exhausted, with no memory beyond the past six months. Was she the last woman left or were there more some where.

I liked this novel, and the way its headed. But it is a shame that it is not a standalone, ends with a cliff hanger "GROAN". If i had of known before i would not of read it. Loved the characters as well as the plot? not really sure what that is as of yet, but i have a fair idea. What i do know is Hannah is obviously not the last woman on earth, and there is something not right about her. "Cole the leader" who one of the other members of the team was ordered to execute for some reason is hooked on Hannah and has a tale all of his own. Will only find out if i keep reading the other novels in this series.. and that may never end as the author could bring out 4 or 10 novels before it ends.

This book was way better than I expected it to be. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. It does end in a cliff hanger that is going to make you want to read the next in the series. The characters are well developed and I can't wait to learn more about each one. The only reason it I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt there could have been a little more closure on some of the aspects of the story at the end of this book, and may be not such a huge list of questions we're left with by the ending. Definitely worth a read!

Brilliant first story!

What an excellent portrayal of war and its effects on the human condition! Eight men have formed a close knit family after serving together in the war. Add in one lonely woman and watch the sparks fly! Hannah is one strong young woman, beaten down but won’t give in. I like her. So. The book is very well written, characters, dialogue and action are clear and very real. The love making is handled with a gentle touch. It seems a bit silly but the story reminded me of Snow White only for grownups. This grownup loved the book!!

Contemptible

I would have probably given this book 3 stars, if only for a fairly good storyline...

By the way, the grammar was awful.

Then I read this at the end of the book:

A word from the author: Cliffhanger endings… yeah, I know. You hate them. But the thing is… what awesome tv show doesn’t use them? And besides, the full series is right at your fingertips. Get Book 2 in the Outlasting Series right now… CHASING TRUTH

Really? Contemptible.

I won't ever buy any of this author's books because I refuse to validate such behavior.
