About the author

L. Pichon says that when she was little, she loved to draw, and her mom said she was very good at making a mess (this is still true today). She kept drawing, went to art school, became a designer and art director at Jive Records, and began to publish children’s books. After its publication in the U.K., The Brilliant World of Tom Gates won several prestigious awards, including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize, and the Blue Peter Book Award. L. Pichon lives in Brighton, England, with her family.

'Extra Special Treats' was yet another fun and lively novel featuring Tom Gates. This time winter has come and made its presence known with SNOW! YAY! Our cheeky little fella has gotten a 3 DAYS off school because the heating had broken down and was using that time to accomplish as much as he could quickly. And surprise, surprise! Tom was trying his hardest to get the SATR PUPIL badge which unfortunately for him Marcus had already received. Beautifully illustrated with loving doodles and squiggles this was a novel I really enjoyed! Highly recommended for middle-grade students and children.
Congratulations to Liz Pichon, I'm loving your series so far!

Ik heb dit boek gelezen in het kader van een leermodule op mijn werk. De opdracht: kies een boek dat je vroeger nooit zou hebben uitgekozen en lees het. Is het wat je ervan verwachtte? Wat vond je er leuk of verrassend aan?

Ik zou een gelijksoortig boek nooit uitgezocht hebben toen ik de leeftijd van de doelgroep was. De tekeningen spreken mij totaal niet aan en een verhaal met een jongen in de hoofdrol was nooit mijn eerste keuze.

Ik zou een soortgelijk boek nog steeds niet voor de lol lezen, maar ik ben blij dat ik het geprobeerd heb en ik weet nu wat ik me erbij moet voorstellen als een kind vraagt wat voor boek dit is of wat ik kan aanraden als ze dit leuk vinden.

Z nejakého podivného dôvodu som mal pocit, že toto je najslabší Tom Gates zatiaľ... neviem, či som sa ho už presýtil, alebo som sa ešte nenakopol po vianočnom ničnerobení... no akosi mi nesadol... :/ smola... možno nabudúce :D

Tom Gates: Extra Special Treats (Not) by [Pichon, L.]I was given this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This book is so much fun to read. I love when I read a book and I catch myself laughing out loud at parts. Tom Gates wants to receive a Star Pupil badge. Along the way he comes across other special treats such as days off because of heating problems at school, visits with the "Fossils" (his grandparents) and hidden treats.

Throughout the story L. Pichon places little illustrations that would catch every kids imagination. The doodles and drawing are as much fun as the story. I could see this book being ideal for 4th through 6th grade students.

Perfekt att tipsa om till läsare av Dagbok för alla mina fans och Kapten Kalsong. Små illustrationer som vävs ihop med texten så det blir lätt och luftigt och roligt att läsa! Perfekt för kids som kommer och frågar efter en tjockare bok fast med lite text. En fråga som brukar få min bibliotekariehjärna att dunka av ansträngning.

Dock lite svårt att beskriva handlingen. Vi får liksom följa Tom Gates i hans vardag. Knasiga familjen, jobbiga grannar, sura lärare och ännu jobbigare know-it-all Marcus. Tom vill få ett Stjärnelev märke, mest för att göra Marcus arg. Det går lite si så där när man måste klottra på allt, aldrig kan lämna in en läxa på icke skrynkligt papper och man alltid hamnar i trubbel.

Thanks to Candlewick Press for providing the copy for my review. When I first received it, I thought, "Oh no, it's a graphic novel (Not my style). However it's just a middle school novel with doodles. And I got to like the doodles which Liz Pichon, the author, is very good at. It has an amazing cover (doodle art of course) and the story of Tom's quest for a Star Pupil badge is well written. It has a great cast of characters that included his nemisis, Marcus, his sister, Delia, his parents of course, Mr. Fullerman (his teacher), his grandparents (The Fossils) and his cousins. I will now forward this novel on to my grandson who I'm sure will like it as he enjoys these diary type stories. Well done, Liz!

Tom Gates really wants a star student badge. But his work is always in bad conditions, and the teacher doesn't accept it. So Tom decides to change for once to get his star student badge. Then Tom starts to hand in his work in with effort so the teacher will notice him and give him a badge. Tom Gates: Extra Special Treats is about, hard work, annoyance and humiliation.

I liked how it was his grandparents 50th anniversary. It was very funny when the family did a family portrait. I like that Tom and Marcus are enemies but they can go too far with it especially as Marcus is sat next to Tom.

There are at least 14 of these TG books. The cover announces it as “the totally brilliant best-selling UK series.”
In this addition to the MG hybrid series, Tom’s family is preparing for the grandparents’ aka The Fossils’ (always portrayed as graphic text which looks like crumbly rocks) 50th anniversary. The realistic school and family story is told with copious doodles and dynamic fonts with only a few Briticisms. Few to zero LOLs, but the humor is light and consistent, and the fun artwork is irresistible.

The Fossils are/quite small and wrinkled/with skin that's gray/and skin that's crinkled./No need to use/a walking stick./Their mobile scooter/does the trick./They do their shopping with it weekly,/as Grandad's knees are slightly creaky./And now we're celebrating/with some tea/their 50th anniversary!/But as they're old,/it won't end late./They'll be asleep/by half past eight.

Another entry into the Tom Gates series has Tom dealing with his cranky older sister Delia (Tom didn’t mean to startle her into dropping -- and breaking -- her phone), trying to focus in class so he can earn a Star Pupil badge, and enjoying the unexpected snowstorm which cancels school. Along the way he has to figure out how to undo the bad first impression he has made on his new neighbor, find the snacks his mom has hidden, plan a gift for the Fossils’ anniversary (his grandparents’ 50th), and deal with his annoying Aunt, Uncle, and cousins who move in when their pipes freeze. A fun series with a UK setting for those who love Dork Diaries and Wimpy Kid books. Tom Gates is a doodler and the book is graphical consisting of hand-written text and lots and lots of doodles.

Another wacky and crazy entry in the Tom Gates series.

This time, Tom has tells us about lots of 'extras'....extra snow days, extra (good at) homework to get a star pupil badge, extra time with 'The Fossils'...and on and on. Of course, many of Tom's 'extras' go completely wrong and end up a disaster, but in the end, we are laughing out loud.

Tom Gates: Extra Special Treats (not) is a fun read for those who like Wimpy Kid or Timmy Failure.

I like this book very much for many reasons. First of all, the design is an excellent one, it shows us a creative and playful sky. We look at pictures of pages for sketchnote and this makes me particularly fond of it. Second, with a simple storyline that makes me feel very relaxed, especially reading it after the tiring serial exam. I found how many comfortable and happy times I found and it also sparked my imagination. And for sure, I will buy this collection of books !!!!!

Tom Gates is the sorrowful example of a child in denial. Whilst he tries to portray himself as a ‘humorous’ and ‘relatable’ teenage boy, it is clear as day that his constant and insufferable need to doodle in any given situation is implicit of early signs of dementia and/or schizophrenia. I continue to read this series with the hope that this 11 year old boy can one day find the help he so desperately needs, as well as the proper parental care that he has been neglected of thus far.

I enjoyed reading this with my daughter. Tom's antics, once again, are quite funny and I really enjoyed his quest for the "Star Pupil". Although annoying, Marcus' vanity when it came to flashing around his "Star Pupil" badge became hilarious when he was getting in trouble and at the brink of losing his badge.

Another thoroughly enjoyable read!
