Take a magical journey with Princess Alice in this delightful picture book. HAVE YOU SEEN MY BLANKIE? tells the story of Alice as she goes in search of her missing blanket, following the clues from her brother, Prince Jack, to Giant Jim, to the witch, and finally the dragon. However, Alice has a hard time taking the blanket back as the dragon needs it to help him sleep too.

As Alice searches for a replacement, the dragon and Alice go through potential items before finding just the perfect thing. With messages about empathy, patience, sharing, and making new friends, this book is a pleasure to read to young children.

What I loved: The text is written as a beautiful poem with plenty of rhymes that will appeal to young ears and give a great rhythm while reading. The font size is easily readable from a distance and is made for reading out loud to little ones. Illustrations perfectly compliment the text, bringing the story to life with a cute sketching style. There is a lot to look at in the book, including with the witch's house, Prince Jack's fort, and more. The text can be a little lengthy in some spreads, but the rhyming nature and detailed illustrations makes it easier for younger toddlers to love it regardless. The addition of some sounds (e.g. Achoo! when the dragon sneezes) add some extra fun for toddler ears.

Final verdict: Perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and even young elementary schoolers, this picture book is an absolutely delightful journey. HAVE YOU SEEN MY BLANKIE? is a lovely story about Princess Alice's search for her blankie which ultimately contains positive messages about sharing, generosity, empathy, and determination. Highly recommend for any young readers looking for a joyous new adventure.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Have You Seen My Blankie? by Lucy Rowland, illustrated by Paula Metcalf. PICTURE BOOK. Nosy Crow (Candlewick), 2019. $17. 9781536208191.

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Princess Alice misplaces her beloved blankie one day and ends up following a trail of leads to a kindhearted dragon who needed something cuddly (like the blankie!) to get to sleep. Feeling bad for causing the dragon distress when she demands her blankie back, Alice retraces her trail to help find something soft and cuddly (a giant Teddy Bear!) for her new dragon friend.

This a great little story about friendship and helping others. Its written in a lilting rhyme that makes for a fun read aloud, and younger audience will surely enjoy hearing about the scary dragon who is actually a softy at heart. The message is straightforward enough; I think this would be a fun bedtime read for kids.

We had a great time with this story – the rhyme makes this a pleasure to read aloud and the illustrations bring the words to life beautifully.

This book is aimed at children between 2-5 years and it is perfect for that age group. Our daughter is 3 and in ‘Have You Seen my Blankie?’, we found so much for us to listen to, look at and talk about. Nancy made links between the characters in this story and other stories she knows. She noticed some of the rhyming words – reading this book for her was great fun as the rhyme and rhythm works so well throughout. We also talked about how Alice might help the dragon before we got to the brilliant ending!

This lovely picture book would make a great addition to a class library. We loved Princess Alice and her determination to help the dragon even though it took lots of perseverance to think through the problem – which is a great message! This book would work really well if you are exploring the theme of empathy and understanding how others feel.

We must thank the lovely folk at Nosy Crow for sending us a copy to review.

My favorite part of this book was definitely the cover. Adorable in idea, enticing in execution.

Otherwise? Alice does what she can to find her lovey. Finally she discovers it in the arms of a sleepy dragon.

But he looked so sad when Alice took back her Blankie.

Then, according to the dubious-and-sentimental logic in the rhyming verses, she wondered, "If there's something I can do?"

As if a toddler must play Mommy to a huge dragon? Moreover, a dragon that took something that didn't belong to him.

RATING THIS BOOK

Personally I'd give this book just ONE STAR, but that's my adult reaction. And my policy with rating books is to go on the basis of the likely reaction of the intended readers. Bet they'd love it. So FIVE STARS.

FWIW, as an adult I don't agree that sometimes a huge dragon needs "something comforting."

Princess Alice has lost her blankie and, as she always takes it to bed, can't go to sleep without it. She looks everywhere but can't find it so asks her brother, Jack. He informs her the giant took it. The giant tells her a witch took it and the witch tells her the dragon took it. The dragon doesn't want to give up this soft snuggly blankie but every comforter Alice offers him is rejected until she has an idea.

A gentle and amusing story about sharing that any child with a comforter will identify with!

This has been my 4-year old's favorite book for a long time. She thinks it's funny and fascinating.

It's my favorite picture book about a princess. I like the language (not all authors manage to write rhyming texts that feel good to read aloud over and over again, but this one does), the pictures, that the princess is both brave and kind, and that the book doesn't reinforce gender stereotypes. I'm also glad there's no violence in it, since that suits my sensitive kiddo as well as my own preferences.

For those of us who had a blankie and could never find it, this story rings true in every page. The illustrations are rich and the words made me smile. What do you give to a dragon that is as soft and nice as your blankie? Take a journey with Princess Grace and ask yourself: What would YOU give to the dragon?

A princess nightime story...with a twist. Princess Alice can't find her blankie, how will she ever get it back from the dragon who just wants to cuddle with it? A fairytale...sort of. I enjoyed it and will read it again if my baby girl does the princess thing.

The Princess as lost her Blankie. She asks all around until she discovers that the dragon has it. The Princess doesn't want the dragon to be sad so she helps him find something soft cuddly and warm too.

Ok, I wanted to like this so much. And overall, I think it's great. There are just some parts that seem rather choppy and lack flow. I'm curious how it will play to a crowd...
