3.5 not sure if it's just been too long since I read the last volume or if I'm tired, but this one didn't do much for me sadly!

I don't want it to be the enddddd, I want this to continue forever and ever, I need everyone to reconsider the original 15 issue plan, please, write a few more, for me, pleaseeeeeeee.

The story is so good, I know I'm gonna miss it. The ending was perfect, everything was wrapped up nicely. There was something that happened, which I saw coming, based on how volume 2 ended, and I'm glad I was right. I wasn't expecting the "fix" to be what it was, but I loved it.

The only way this could've been better, was if , but I'll take what I can get.

When we last saw Willa, she was on her way to Kansas City. She’s decoded the treasure map in her father’s journal, even though she’s not entirely sure what it means, and it’s time to fix the world.

Meanwhile, Edison is in Chicago, where his story of giant bugs sounds like a lie to those who haven’t seen them before. It’s not.

All hell is breaking loose but it’s okay because Willa has an idea.

I wasn’t sure how to explain the wrap up of this series because everything I want to say includes spoilers. Thankfully Joe Henderson wrote this at the end of the Volume.
SKYWARD started out as the story of a father who is afraid of everything and a daughter who is fearless. It ends as a story of a woman who has experienced true fear and overcome it, becoming stronger for the experience.

On a broader level, this book is a story about fear and how humanity can overcome it. In today’s climate, I wanted to tell a story about hope and empathy, and the strength that comes from them. The world can never be fixed: it was always broken, just in a different way. All we can do is our best with what we’ve got. Try to make it the best world it can be. Approach life from hope, not fear.
After being enthralled by the first two Volumes I’m sorry to say that this final one didn’t really wow me. There’s some more action, romance and a blast from the past but the reveals and resolution were pretty underwhelming and I’m so disappointed that I can’t shout from the rooftops about how extraordinary the ending was. Maybe I expected too much after the build up of the first two Volumes.

Regardless, I still loved the artwork and am looking forward to seeing the movie when it’s released.

I liked this wrap up pretty well. Could the story have been fleshed out more? Of course, but it’s a three volume graphic novel there was always going to be room to flesh out more. The story was a little rushed and maybe could have been 4 volumes, but despite that I did enjoy it. I love the art work and the crazy sky dancing that Willa does. She finds what her father had hidden in Kansas City, but will it be enough to fix the world and save Chicago? Will the side adventures take over and lead Willa off her task? Will the blast from the past cheesy reveal be what knocks her off course? You’ll have to read and find out.

The artwork of Antonio Fabela continues to impress me. It's bursting with colour and movement, and does a fantastic job of illustrating the tension and speed with which this story moves. Willa gets to meet a part of her past, while the antagonists of previous issues are out to get all they can, and hurt Willa in the process. That Willa is already moving past them is wonderful, and the ending of this story (no! I want more Willa!) wraps up things nicely, while leaving things open for Willa to find new adventures, soaring gracefully above everything.

Many are the series or books that start off with a great premise, full of energy and interesting characters and then end without fulfilling that promise. this is one of those series. It ended and was a happy ending without solving all the problems so I felt satisfied at the end but really disappointed.

First, Willa never really evolved much over the last volume. No really crises of self to overcome and the big problem "stopping the insect farmers from taking over the city" felt very forced and was resolved with all the creative energy of a high school student rushing to get a paper done. the author writes a bit at the back "I'll miss these characters" but I can't believe that's true or he would have done a better job developing them.

Second, that big CRISIS went out with such a whimper and was only a crisis because the author tried really hard to make it one. Yeah a bunch of insects is scary but you have to think the city would have some armed resistance to make short work of them even if Willa hadn't helped out in the lamest way possible (get someone to not press a button by talking to them).

Third, the sense of wonder and excitement and danger of zero G was really lost in this volume. 11 issues in and the author is already out of neat ideas to explore? Wow. Look to Y the Last Man standing to how to do it right and sustain a novel premise for 50+ issues.

Fourth, methinks killing off the father in volume one was a mistake - he would have really helped the last volume have higher emotional stakes.

Okay - a lot of critique but I guess I still enjoyed the series overall - but it was mainly on the burst of excitement I felt in that first 5 issues.

*3.75

I guess I'm glad that vol. 2 set me up for what to expect here. I came out of vol. 1 with far too high expectations and was sorely disappointed. But I went into this knowing what I would get - a dramatic, cartoonish, highly entertaining graphic novel with stunning artwork. The plot doesn't really hold water, but you don't read these for the plots. You read them for the fun.

I don't have a lot to say about this one. There was a reveal that was pretty dang disappointing:

The romance stuff was super cute, of course.

The plot does some strange stuff, but I easily guessed the big reveal from the last scene in vol. 2. I have a lot of technical questions about the stuff surrounding that:

3.75/5 stars. All in all, this was a fun wrap-up to a fun series. Just don't expect it to be deep or anything, really. But I may reread this in the future just because I had a good time with it.

Series ratings:
Volume One: 5/5 stars
Volume Two: 3.5/5 stars
Volume Three: 3.75/5 stars

When I reviewed the second volume of Joe Henderson and Lee Garbett’s Skyward, I said that this could be the next Y: The Last Man, in that both titles embraced the world-building based on a simple, but unique sci-fi premise, whilst being rooted in the exploration of relatable characters experiencing the extraordinary. However, this third and final volume never quite reaches the near-perfection of the Brian K. Vaughan/Pia Guerra comic that ran for sixty issues. That said, all good things must come to an end, including Skyward.

The story is nicely wrapped up with all loose ends accounted for. It felt too abrupt to me for such an epic story to come to this quick a conclusion. It also felt less emotional overall. So while the story is finished, the brevity and lightness (pardon the pun) of it lessened my enjoyment. Still decent, though.

Felt incredibly rushed. All seemingly got resolved in the story but none of it felt satisfying. There were also a few bothersome inconsistencies in this volume.

Ultimately, this was an enjoyable read. The main thing working against this book was the obvious potential it had to be fantastic.

Happy to have completed this series, but volume 2 was really the peak for me. This book didn’t have much tension or interest for me, even in the big “plot twist.” Not to say I completely saw it coming, but more that it had no emotional impact on me.

I did love Lily standing up to her husband about sexism.

I also loved Willa choosing not to fight.

Favorite quotes:

“Does it look like lady parts? It looks like lady parts.”

“Are we done talking to children and staring at pretty lights yet?”
“No. We’re not.”

“So let’s start actually looking instead of punching shiny things.”

“Just because you didn’t see knives doesn’t mean they weren’t there.”

Favorite character: Willa, I guess. The most developed character in the book. I really liked Stranger the dog, though he didn’t have a lot of page time.

Skyward finishes kind of eh verses how good it started but still fun.

We find out the secret Willa's father had this whole time. Is there really a way to turn off the gravity? Who's behind this all? What is this new secret society in hiding? Will the bad guy finally get his fucking teeth knocked out? It is all answered here.

Willa is still a great main character and the pacing is quick and never boring here. However, the story itself takes predictable twist and nothing really surprising. The art though pushes it from being just okay to still good since it's mostly great. Overall, a solid if not easy to see ending. A 3 out of 5.

Similar to the previous volumes, the story goes in an odd and over-the-top direction with a protagonist carrying the fate of the world on her shoulders. There are some interesting ideas presented but everything is superficially explored. The artwork is, however, still splendid and eye-catching.

This volume was the last volume in the story. As a conclusion goes, this book was great. I loved the development, almost everything coming full circle, and the characters finding out who they truly were. The art was fantastic, and the storyline was wrapped up very satisfyingly.

However, the only problem I had was

Overall, great addition and conclusion to this series. I do wish there was more, but it was wrapped up nicely and there's nothing more I could really ask for.

I found the pacing a bit more jarring than the first two, and this one has some social agenda moments in it 🙄 but overall, the story was fun!

They could have done a lot more with the premise and it tries too hard to come off all witty and quippy like a Marvel move, but overall good comic and ending.

I’m not sure why I never finished this comic - perhaps the slackening of tension apparent in this volume showed up earlier too. The problem isn’t the protagonist - one of the most dynamic and fun to read about in recent Image runs. It’s the antagonists - by this volume the initial Luthor-esque villain has been reduced to comic relief and his bug-riding replacement is, well, just a bit of an idiot. The plot winds down long before the end, loose strings are tied up with bows on, and it’s all a bit cosier than it needed to be.

But why is it over so soon?!?! 😭😭 15 issues, 3 volumes, is not nearly enough of Willa and a low-G world! This was such a cool series and I'm really sad to see it end. I loved so much of it! And I especially like how this volume turned out. Love love!

Hello!

I am going to start by fully admitting that I intended to post my review for Thunderhead yesterday (I had like 20 pages left when the day started) however, the day got away from me, just like much of this week has and it just did not happen. However, I did end up finishing those 20 pages, and reading the entirety of the last volume of Skyward! I also ended up starting an ARC I have on my Kindle but we will talk about that later. For now, let's talk about the end of Skyward!

SPOILERS AHEAD

In this final volume, we get to meet the stranger in the mask (which I totally guessed who it was back in volume one and I was correct , but I was so happy to be correct). We also see Willa figure out what her father's solution to G-day was.

I want to start by saying wow! Even though, I guessed who the stranger in the mask was from the first volume I never could have guessed the solution to G-day in a million years (and it was so cool like I could read a whole volume about it). The one thing that I really wished had happened was that somehow Willa's dad was still alive like I kept waiting and holding out hope that maybe somehow he would come back and show up. I just really really wanted Willa to have everything and more by the end of the series and that included her dad. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with this graphic novel series and I loved the art. I was able to read this whole series on Hoopla, so if you are interested definitely check there! I highly recommend giving this series a read!

Too simple and pat an ending for this series that started off so well. I guess they always planned it to be 15 issues long, but if that's so, they really should have worked harder on the ending. The last 2 volumes were really fun and interesting and inventive. Things just get wrapped up far too easily here, with no real conflict or crisis or anything dramatic at all. I have to say I'm kind of disappointed...

Completely rushed ending. Just bizarre. There was a lot of character development that just didn't happen for our leads (especially for Edison. I would've loved to see more exploration about how he feels about solving the gravity problem and returning to a world where he would be wheelchair-bound). World-altering enemies are defeated within a few panels, the core mystery of the series is instantaneously solved, and the whole adventure comes to an abrupt halt.

The most annoying part, though? Throughout the series we've been warned time and time again "It's dangerous in the forest at night" and "The bugs in the day are bad but the REALLY bad ones come out at night." Pages of set up for absolutely no payoff. They spend maybe five minutes in the forest at night and nothing happens.

This needed to be a longer series.

I feel like this comic had such a potential, but it somewhat little by little fizzled out. Not that this was bad, it was fine but two days after finishing it I don't even remember that much about it? Overall better than Vol. 2 but it still make some choices that weren't my favourite I also feel like the story took some easy way out from places where we could have had some great discussion. I enjoyed the romantic line, but honestly I could have had more of that.

If the premise of the book sounds good to you, go for it, but reading something else instead wouldn't be a great loss...

Wrapped up in a bow but it was a very sweet bow. This is definitely middle-reader stuff: no one gets truly hurt and everyone makes nice in the end. That being said, it was a great idea and has a few decent morals.
This series was apparently always meant to end here so if it seems pat, well that’s perhaps cause I’m used to things being drawn out until cancelled rather than planning a beginning, middle and ending.
Willa tries to change the world back, discovers a few wrinkles in her plan (and the world as she knows it), decides to make the world better regardless, and saves a lot of people in the meantime.
