Friday's time at Highcrest is running out!

The new headmaster is turning everything upside down. Friday's irritatingly high IQ has her fast-tracked to graduation, while a pair of incriminating pants puts Ian on the rocky road to expulsion.

When a rumour emerges of embezzled gold stashed on the school grounds, Friday is determined to uncover the truth. But some big questions remain: Can she stay out of detention long enough to solve the mystery? How will Melanie survive without Friday to tell her what class she's in? And will Friday ever get that first kiss with Ian?

With implosions and explosions everywhere, Friday Barnes will have to use her head and get a grip on her beating heart in order to find the gold that lies within.

And book number eight. There are a lot of threads that culminate in this one, so reading at least some from before for the familiarity pays off.

The headmaster we've come to know and tolerate finally becomes more than plot propellant; just in time to retire finally. I think Spratt put too much pressure on burying what was going on with the new headmaster and there's a layered misdirect I don't think worked entirely. Her background was good, but her motives don't withstand scrutiny or pass muster when translated through her actions in hindsight. Still, it was good enough to go along with.

I thought the central mystery was a bit weak, too. I mean, it wasn't hard to see that there was a single informational fail-point so figuring out what was going on (at least in outline) wasn't hard. But it was still interesting and having the school torn apart was fascinating, too.

Which is a lot of negative when I felt engaged and enjoyed reading it. It's longer than the others and acts as a kind of end-of-series with both a full-on wrap of many ongoing arcs and a lack of leading zinger at the end. Which makes me wonder why there's a ninth book in the series. Big break? Spratt graduating Friday into YA? I want to know...

At any rate I'll end with four stars. I really liked the Ian/Friday relationship developments, too. They were pitch-perfect and nearly enough to pump my personal enjoyment to a full five stars.

Things are changing at Highcrest Academy. There’s a new Headmaster, which made no sense to me when I learned about them towards the end of the last book. Sure, the previous Headmaster is currently recovering from a medical emergency but I didn’t think there was any way they would voluntarily retire.

It’s not that they love their job or having to deal with Friday, who’s fairly consistently sitting on the bench outside their office. It’s because their gambling addiction hasn’t left them with enough money to be able to retire. This apparent inconsistency is explained in this book.

That wasn’t the only thing that was odd about the last book, or this one for that matter. I don’t remember Friday getting hit on the head once in either book. That’s so un-Friday-like.

It’s not long into the new Headmaster’s reign before Friday is transferred from Year 8 to Year 12. This means she will be finishing high school in a matter of months, not years. Highcrest Academy is her home and Melanie, her best friend, is the closest thing she has to family (other than Uncle Bernie). She can’t imagine her life without either and is certain the new Headmaster is just trying to get rid of her. After all, it doesn’t seem as though Dr Belcredi is a fan of Friday.
‘It’s amazing how often you’re the one who find the problems that no-one else notices are there.’
‘I’m just observant,’ said Friday.
‘You’re a trouble-magnet,’ said Dr Belcredi.
Melanie has a boyfriend now, although in the last book

There’s the mystery of the missing toilet paper, unexpected cake and the entire student body are sleeping in tents. The big mystery, even though it felt forgotten for part of the book, was the possibility of gold hidden somewhere at Highcrest Academy.
There chiselled into the sandstone, just visible under years of lichen and dirt were the words:
LATET INTUS IN AURUM
‘That’s Latin. It means “the gold lies within”,’ said Friday. ‘I always assumed it was a metaphor for a student’s potential, but maybe it literally means gold.’
A couple of minor inconsistencies didn’t make sense to me.

Shortly before Friday pulled the fire alarm we were told it was an hour before dinner and as such classes had finished for the day. Two pages later we learn that no one was scared when they evacuated because it meant they were getting “an afternoon off class”.

Friday reminds us she isn’t good at noticing changes to people’s physical appearance when Mirabella wails about the conspiracy to make her fat, yet in the last book Friday specifically mentioned another character losing 15 kilos.

I was glad that Malcolm had a role to play in this book and the new Headmaster, who I hated at first sight because I didn’t want the old Headmaster to be gone, grew on me towards the end. I loved that Binky had so much page time; he’s always adorable.

If my series binge had gone ahead as planned several years ago I would have been extremely disappointed with how this book ended. It seemed like it was the final book in the series when it was published and so much was left up in the air. Thankfully I have the ninth book on hand and I’ve already had a sneak peek at the end so I know there’s going to be a tenth.

The final book in a fun series sees Friday entering Year 12 (final year of high school) at the ripe old age of 13. A fun little romp as Friday again saves the school, meets some past characters.

Congratulations and thanks to RA Spratt for providing an enjoyable series with a strong, smart, ordinary female MC with normal(ish) relationships, and bringing it to a timely end. The series needed to finish. Friday's stories as a child needed to conclude. I can only hope that Spratt resurrects Friday and Ian in a YA or adult cozy-mystery series sometime down the track. Now that would be a fun read!

My daughter and I have read the series, together to begin with, as they were released. It has been a nice "bonding experience", and a darned good read.

*sigh*

Just did a re-read of the series, and surprisingly, it was just as good as the first time round (which was just under five years ago!). The only problem I had was with the ending. After seven books of Frian, Ian just moves to Italy, just like that?! Unless there is going to be a spin-off series, this ending was a bit underwhelming. Everything else was awesome though, and I absolutely LOVED it!!

this fell off so hard

why have a dramatic tone shift in book 8 of your series??? it makes no sense. from the beginning, the series was always absurd, and that's why it worked. when you take away the quirky insanity, it becomes nothing.

the series has previously established that the school is MEANT to be badly managed. the students are MEANT to be spoiled rich kids doing insane things. the adults are MEANT to be incompetent. the mysteries are MEANT to be bizarre. every situation is MEANT to be ridiculous. et cetera.
you're telling me you want to break these rules in book EIGHT??? now the school has new management acting like normal people and ruining the whole story. now when the main characters do crazy things to solve mysteries, they're actually getting in trouble. why?? a series that used to be funny and entertaining is now just tedious. worse than that, it actually breaks the story's internal logic but that's a whole other can of worms that I'm not gonna open right now.

I honestly cannot comprehend what this book would be classified as. the mysteries aren't complex enough for this to be considered real mystery, all the humor is gone, and obviously it's still nowhere close to realistic fiction. maybe it's supposed to be going the romance route? and that's why the characters are aged up next book?? if so... LMAO ok babe. the romance was another thing that benefited from the absurdity of the series, and now it's just trying too hard.

will not be continuing this series after this mess lmao. even if this hadn't been genuinely bad, I have no interest in seeing these characters as 15 yr olds. someone please pray for authors who feel the need to age up their middle grade characters after a while just so they can put romance in

As the last book of the highly successful Friday Barnes series, R.A Spratt had a lot of pressure put on her to right Friday Barnes: Never Fear. It picked up from a good cliffhanger and in my opinion, the storyline went smoothly. I had low hopes for Never Fear, so it was great that I was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. The asbestos in the school was shocking, but even better, Friday’s confusing explanations were back! It was definitely a good plot and a good book. However, some of the characterizations were a bit off. Friday was more emotional, though that is expected because she seems to be getting more emotional, Melanie seemed more dependent on Friday and Uncle Bernie seemed a bit too rough with Friday. To my delight, there were some references to the first few books, including the return of Malcolm, which made me feel nostalgia. But was it the best for the last book of the series?

As for Friday and Ian’s relationship, to my anger and throwing-book-across-the-room-reflexes, it was definitely made canon. Friday kissed the boy during a breakdown, and it turned out Ian liked her back, to the misdelight of my stomach. Eurgh. And to think she’s only 12. I admit that this book is lower down because of this. Because either than Frian being made canon, this book was awesome...but the question remains whether it was good enough for the last book. In my opinion, it wasn’t. I’m sorry, R.A Spratt, but this was not as awesome as other books in the series.
You can’t really solve the mystery in this book. Not really...but you could tell there was something up with Mr. Pisano, and there are small things in the book which makes you suspicious about Mr. Pisano and the asbestos.

I admit it - I bawled my eyes out for the last chapter. It’s highly unusual for me to cry like that over books. Sure, one or two tears fell out (SPOILER ALERT FOR SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT) for Alice and Ghastly’s death in Skulduggery Pleasant, (SPOILERS FINISHED) but I was flat out crying for the last chapter. Friday Barnes was such an amazing series and it was over. I will cross my fingers and hope for the best that there will be a Heroes of Olympus style sequel, but I hope there is one thing - PLENTY OF MELANIE INSTEAD OF SHUTTING HER OUT LIKE GROVER WAS.

Im so sad this series is over!!!

This final instalment was just as brilliant as all the rest, but I honestly am totally sad that there’ll be no more adventures with Friday, Melly, Ian, and all the rest.

It’s such a clever story, a brilliant middle-grade read, with interesting characters, convoluted plots, hilarious banter, and some serious themes thrown in too. Such a joy to read, such fun, and I even learned some things too (mostly that I could never be a quantum physicist, but hey I appreciate those that are!).

If you’re looking for a super fun, super quick read, but that is actually interesting and well written, and funny as hell, with characters you can actually get behind and care about, look no further!!! You won’t be disappointed.

I thought that this book was outstanding with a perfect plot twist. It was well structured and there was tension in the right places. It held you and then had you thinking and then threw you to the ground when the out of the ordinary happened, but when you thought about it was all quite usual. This is the most hooking end to a fabulous series. This was definitely the best book and is suitable for children 7 to 12. It was the best thriller mystery I have ever read and I would recommend it to all avid young readers.

Friday Barnes 8: Never Fear by R.A. Spratt is a captivating and humorous addition to the amazing series. This book sees the clever young detective, Friday Barnes, returning to Highcrest Academy to solve new mysteries. From a missing person case to escalating pranks, Friday's sharp mind and wit are in full display.

Spratt's writing is great and filled with laugh-out-loud moments, making the book a joy for both young readers and adults. The story offers a good balance of mystery, humour, and cool characters, particularly highlighting Friday's growth and her relationships with ‘friends’ like Melanie and Ian.

Overall, Never Fear is a delightful read that continues to charm fans with its smart plot and endearing characters. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the series, this book is a must-read for mystery lovers.

This book is an exceptional novel which had a high contrast with an ending for an amusing and gripping novel about a young girl’s detective adventures in Highcrest Academy. Her incessant amount of questions and unnecessary answers to questions asked, created the humour needed for the final novel in the series, because I was laughing at the sarcastic comments and random jokes out here and there throughout the novel. R A Spratt did an amazing job ending one of my top favourite series’ of books I have read, so I would rate this book a five out of five.

4.5.
THAT WAS SO CRUEL! R.A.Spratt did not just dangle that amazing future that Ian and Friday could've had and just rip it away. This book I think was meant to be the last because it's got some closure and no cliffhangers but I am so glad it's being extended because I don't know what I would do if there wasn't another book after those last few lines. I know in the next book there is a time jump which makes me hyped. Anyway I freaked out way too much over Friday and Ian in this book but they kissed! Twice!

Love this book series! I read them over the summer holidays years ago, since my sister owned the first 8 books, and ever since I've read them over and over again. I fell in love with Friday's personality and nerdy comments, let alone how sisterly and funny Melanie seems, and don't get me started on Ian. It's written well with small details that tie together the whole mystery, making it seem well thought out. Defiantly my favorite book series!

I loved this series and the book, mostly...I hated the ending it was so unsatisfying and annoying. So inconclusive, of all the different directions Spratt has gone on the past, this felt boring and almost like a cop out. I am so sad to leaving a bad review, but when I reread the series I couldn't even read this book, it makes me so upset.

Spratt's Jacks #21
Friday Barnes #8
8th book in the series and it feels like an end, although there are more books to come, it is certainly an ending of sorts, where will it go from here?
Only time will tell, in the meantime this was a cracking yarn again.
A great story, well told, with great characters, and a big heart.

I love this series. I bought this book as soon as it published and then procrastinated myself into a reading slump because I just didn’t want it to be over. However, I’ve taken the plunge and read it and am not at all disappointed (plus rereading is always an option)

There is never a dull moment when Friday is around. This time the students end up in tents as asbestos has been found in the buildings. Friday is suspicious of the new headmaster and mysteries keep happening. Plus she and Ian finally face their feelings. Surprises continue until the last pages.
