Few writers, actors, directors and performers have matched what Carl Reiner did over the many decades of his career in all four categories. This is a fun little book to read, and one gets a glimpse into his work performing with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca in YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, creating, writing, and producing THE DICK VAN DYKE, directing his play ENTER LAUGHING both on Broadway and for film, acting in films like THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, then going on to directing major Hollywood films for three decades (THE COMIC, THE JERK, OH GOD, THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS, et al) and his life as a oft-chosen emcee/raconteur for various charity and award events in Hollywood and New York.
It's not a complete biography of course. I hope someday soon a great show-business biographer will put a CARL REINER: A LIFE book together about this amazing and generous man.
And also one chronicling his talented son Rob, also a accomplished actor-director whose life was tragically cut short last year.
I found the last chapter of the memoir, concerning Reiner's brother--a D-Day veteran--and President Bill Clinton, quite moving.
Most of the stories here are witty and charming tales you'd want Mr. Reiner to tell if we had been lucky enough to be at a lunch with him.
