Oh my don't let the sweet cover with the cute snowman fool you! This book has 3 steamy stories. I enjoyed the Christmas theme in all 3 stories. The first story was my favorite. The last story was somewhat similar to the 2nd one which was a bummer. Overall though I enjoyed reading these short stories. This is perfect for women who enjoy chick lit books.

I'm really surprised the first 2 stories weren't actually put together in a paranormal Christmas anthology. They both are paranormal type stories.

I'm giving this book 3 stars, just because the first story is a favorite. The other 2 - ehh.

Lori Foster - 4 stars. Queen of the short romance story! This one is a beloved favorite. I read it every Christmas. I know - it's kind of dorky. A pet psychic, a SWAT cop & a stolen donkey. Whatever - I still like it! One thing that isn't logical about the story is the couple had dated in the past where they had a "hot & heavy" romance. Strangely enough, they've never seen each other naked. HMMM.

Gemma Bruce 2 stars. I really liked this story, up until Christmas Day & those 2 extremely stupid kids had to get themselves in trouble. I'll try not to give too much away, but it has to do with hiding presents in an abandoned mine shaft & an avalanch. I just felt manipulated. There is A LOT of sex in this story, all of it unprotected. These people haven't seen each other in a year, so you'd think there'd be a conversation about who they'd been with before the main event. Not cool.

Janice Maynard - 1 star. Very trite, cliched story. Strong, handsome, rich (of course!), artist hiding out in his rustic, though thoroughly modern in convienences cabin in the woods. Stupid, though plucky cute girl deciding hiking in the wilderness on Christmas during a blizzard is a good idea. Of course there's a rescue with blinding insight - THIS IS LOVE. Sex soon follows (unprotected without a discussion before hand). A marriage proposal in 48 hours. ALL IS WELL!!

Merry Christmas :)

Really I just wanted it to be over. It took me nearly 3 days to finish this and normally I'd only need 5-6 hrs. I didn't enjoy any of these stories and spent a lot of time shaking my head and putting off reading it. Even the few good moments that made me smile, shiver or laugh couldn't save this book. It was a disappointment and a sad way to begin the new reading year. Bah!

Do You Hear What I Hear by Lori Foster

When SWAT team member Osbourne Decker is approached by friend and sergeant, Lucius Ryder he knows it won't be good. Lucius asks him to watch over his wife, Bethany's, twin sister Marci, while they're away on their honeymoon. Someone's been following Marci and Lucius worries since he swears Marci's not one for melodrama. Osbourne dated her for a while and broke it off when he found out she's crazy. He knows she's all about melodrama and insanity too. She talks to animals but not only that, she talks to them like they talk back. See? Looney tunes! When a donkey goes missing from a church's nativity scene Osbourne knows exactly who's behind the theft. All he really wants to do is sleep. It's 7:30am and he's been up all night with a hostage situation but he goes directly to Marci's apartment after agreeing to keep an eye on her. Just the mention of her makes him semi aroused and then the sight of her in a robe and nothing else brings on full lust. He gives in pretty easily to that lust and has her pinned to a wall within minutes. Needing more room for his extracurriculars, Osbourne moves them toward the bedroom and is nearly trampled by the stolen donkey. I'm not even going to bother going on with the plot. It gets more loopy and rushed from there.

Bah Humbug, Baby by Gemma Bruce

When former lovers Allison (Ally) Newberry and Lee Simonson are set up by their respective siblings, the pair find themselves stranded together in the tiny town of Good Cheer. Stranded in a chalet they have no choice but to keep one another company. Though it's been a year since their most recent break up they are both still angry and in love. Allison decides they should give into the passion and use this opportunity to find peaceful closure - something missing every other time they've parted. The passion is there. Always has been. It's never been a issue between them. They're soul mates who have never seemed to find a way to make it work so perhaps it's best to part this time under better circumstances. And, again I'll stop the summary here because for a bit it's just day to day stuff like cooking, eating, shopping, sex, then there is some action but it was too little too late. I was totally into this one for many pages but then nothing was really happening and I began to care less and less. I got confused during the sex scene which is never good and by the end of the story I was thinking, bah, who cares.

By Firelight by Janice Maynard

When a thud sounds outside his cabin door Grant Monroe is surprised when he opens the door to the blizzard outside and a mound of frozen fabric falls at his feet. Peeling away the layers he discovers a frozen women. Removing her clothes and admiring what he sees he tries to warm her by the fire. Madison Tierney (Maddy) doesn't believe in love. Her parents are divorcing and now she doubts love even exists. Grant's pretty hot so Maddy has decided that since they are snowed in they might as well have sex. She offers immediately but Grant denies her. He wants her to heal first, get to know her so he is sure she really wants it, and he has some secrets he needs to share. Really? They've known each other for 7 minutes, maybe. There's this back and forth between them and for two complete strangers they take to one another disturbingly quickly. I was pretty much over caring when she first propositioned him, or maybe it was when he tucks her hair behind her ear, grazing her neck, after she's been awake about 3 minutes. Anyway, it was early on and I only finished it because I hate not finishing books. That's not to say this story was the worst. It was simply because it was last. Any of them could have been last and I would have felt the same way.

This is a fairly lackluster collection. I'd read the Lori Foster one before and was not thrilled with it. The other two stories in this collection are kinda ho-hum with a bit of spice (mostly just the second one has the spice).

Do You Hear What I Hear? - Lori Foster - 2 /5 - So Marci is a pet psychic. Yes, really. Osbourne is a cop whose buddy asks him to keep an eye on Marci while he’s away on his honeymoon with Marci’s twin sister. Osbourne agrees - he’s super attracted to Marci, thinks she’s sex on legs, but he’s really wary because he thinks she’s a fricking nutcase. He really does - and he doesn’t think it lightly either. But he’s thrown together with her and starts to realize that maybe she’s just eccentric instead and maybe she’s okay afterall. Actually it felt more like what he ends up thinking is that her sanity is no deterrent from getting into her pants. And he does...with his super monster wang. This didn’t really work for me at all. It came down to the fact that, from the start, Osbourne has no respect for Marci, thinks she’s cute, but crazy and all he wants is to have sex with her. Then, out of absolutely nowhere, after they’ve had sex, he invites her to stay with him, long-term. Then all of a sudden, he believes she’s psychic and he’s in love with her. It felt so unnatural in its development. And it never felt like Marci had any reason to really like Osbourne either.

Bah Humbug, Baby - Gemma Bruce - 3 /5 - This was fairly cute. Allison and Lee are self-proclaimed soulmates who let life get in the way of their being happy together, so they’ve been broken up for a year. Their families trick them into staying together in an isolated cabin during a snowstorm, in a town called Good Cheer. Here they get a taste of being reunited, but both of them wonder if they can actually give it another go when the snow melts. Allison and Lee definitely have some chemistry and they’re sexing it up left and right in this story...with some fairly sexy scenes too. I liked that they started out with so much history and it really felt like they knew each other inside and out. I realize now that a lot of second chance romances just reunited the characters and it feels like they’re strangers. I also liked that neither of them had any qualms about admitting they still loved the other. They knew the love was there, it was other things they had problems with. And yet, there were still some problems in this story.

First off, they never really get past their bitterness of their past fight...I still don’t even fully know what happened. It sounded pretty brutal with two workaholics planning a trip and Allison showing up 2 days late and Lee deciding to leave without her. That’s definitely something that needs to be worked through. Instead of having any discussion about their relationship (or lack thereof), the both of them are succumbing to the crazy lust that lets them just set it all aside and live an illusion for a week. So it’s clear then, that they have the personalities to live a happy life in isolation of their actual jobs...but what happens when they’re back in reality? And in the end, there’s not enough resolution in that department. I mean, while they’re running around trying to find out if the experience in Good Cheer actually happened and uncovering a little X-Files type mystery, neither of them are discussing how they’re going to get past their actual problems. Realizing you’ll do anything to be together and actually solving those problems are totally different. Did Lee give up his overseas work? Is Allison done being a workaholic or is she gonna show up to their wedding 2 days late? Have they completely finished “reacting” instead of listening? I think maybe a epilogue would have worked here.

By Firelight - Janice Maynard - 2.5 /5 - While rather trite and cliche, this still had a bit going for it. Grant is an artist staying in his remote yet luxurious cabin in the middle of nowhere when Maddy Tierney stumbles up to his cabin during a snowstorm. He instantly brings her in and cares for her...and when she wakes they both feel the intense attraction and need to unload their innermost secrets. Grant is instantly certain that Maddy is “the one” but Maddy had a blow to her faith in love when her parents divorced...so she’s a bit less certain. But they both definitely want to sex things up, except Grant wants to wait a bit so Maddy will know it’s for REAL. As I said, super cliche. And really this kinda felt like a longer story squeezed into a smaller space, since it takes them 3 days to fall in love and propose marriage...and even less for them to have wild monkey sex (which is unfortunately also written on fast foward). And because this goes so fast, the characters don’t really have a lot of subtlety or nuance. They’re bold and brash in in your face with what they want. Still, the characters were pretty likeable, especially Grant. I also liked the dog named Van Gogh...and if you ask me she didn’t get enough screen time. This was kind of an idealistic time together for the couple (and the dog) and then suddenly, reality intruded and they hit a speed bump. And I got a bit confused about why they were bent out of shape. He asked her to go to his family Christmas, she said she wasn’t comfortable and he assumed she’d just rejected him outright. I don’t remember her saying that it was over or they couldn’t be together on a slower timeline or anything, she just didn’t want to go with him to Christmas dinner. So I was a bit confused why he was upset, but I guess he misunderstood. Still, a decent enough read, but not a particularly memorable one.

“granny.” you're a grown man and you're calling your grandmother "granny"?
“hoochie.” who talks like that?
How are we supposed 2 like someone that’s called a total nutcase. I mean, the guy’s been talking crap about her and women like her since the beginning.
She seriously didn’t know what that was. she said she’s not a virgin &yet you have no idea what it is. You ask if it’s a gun. Which, he’s an officer of the law, so it’s a legitimate question, but it was still ridiculous!
Why didn’t they say the donkey was real? I thought it was fake.
I love animals, too. but this animal psychic thing is kinda weird.
And what kind of name is ozzie?!? Ughhh!
“irresistible bod.” Omg. You did not just say that out loud.
You can hear the donkeys thoughts&fears….&when he was to go to the bathroom. Um. Oh-kayyy. This is just random &weird. &has no connection to the story whatsoever. I thought I was getting a Christmas book. Not a jerk SWAT guy and a crazy girl. I cant connect to these characters at all.
“behind.” Who says that? Or this-“stellar legs.”
‘didn’t consider marci delusional, just fanciful.’ You’ve been calling her crazy from the start!
‘he hated seeing any man disrespect a woman.’ You stare &act disrespectful to her all the time, too! you freakin hypocrite.
“because you like me?” ozzie had never been the type to abuse anyone, but especially not a woman. At the same time, he didn’t want to give her false impressions.’ What are you talking about? abuse makes it sound like you’re talking about hitting a woman, which has nothing to do with what you’re talking about. why don’t you use a different word there?
They both talk like children at times. Ex.”gnarly.”
“keep your fingers out of your mouth and your tongue where I can see it.” ok, this guy is way to sexual.
You actually warmed up to the fact of being a dad with that crazy girl. WTH is this? I wanted to slam the book down right then.
Are we supposed to feel sorry for him about his crazy ex? Cuz I don’t. at all. That sounded way to stupid and unrealistic.
“his window lowered a mere 5 inches.” That isn’t “mere” at all. How much do you have to roll it down to talk to someone?
“have you asked her?” “yes. Twice.” Marci didn’t recognize the fellow at all. She yelled out the window, “he could be telling the truth, osbourne, although idr meeting him.”
Do you realize what you just said? You idiot.
“men see me as an airhead, and maybe easy.” “id say they dk you very well.” “no, they don’t. im not an airhead. Did you seriously just admit you’re easy? And you do act like an idiot.
Carrying her bag to the car doesn’t make him nice, or a gentleman. He’s crude and disrespectful. &is way to sexual.
The women watching them leave was stupid. all you had to say was you were gunna be away for the holidays. You didn’t have to knock on every door and inform everyone.
They moved way too fast. They almost did it &then all of a sudden wanna spend Christmas together.
You stop him from saying donkey’s a**, but not that he loves your a**.
“fine behind.” Who talks like that?
‘women always got giddy over his size; he’d learned to take it in stride. In fact, sometimes their enthusiasm almost seemed demeaning. Dumb as it sounded, and he’d never admit it to another guy, he wanted to be seen as more than a well-hung stud.’ You treat marci the same exact way-as a sexual object, you freakin hypocrite.
Idk how many times he said marci wasn’t like Ainsley. I wanted to smack him. we didn’t even get the whole story there. And I cant believe he didn’t even tell marci.
OMG. I hate books that are broken up into different stories. This book was too short for one story, much less 3. I guess I forgot it wasn’t one story, but when I got to the end of the 1st one, I was so shocked.

By Firelight-
Idk why she acted like her story was so bad. So you were with friends, they left you, you stayed behind. Im missing the story here.
“the man was a stranger. Despite the confidences she had shared with him, he had offered nothing of his own background.”
So 4 pages l8r you wanna have sex with the stranger.
“maddy touched him deeply, made him yearn for things he had given up on a long time ago.”
“the thought of maddy lying dead in a snowdrift made him feel sick.” I HATE when feelings happen so freakin soon.
“he touched her occasionally, just to reassure himself that she was real.”
“he would gladly take credit for rescuing her if it meant she was tied to him in some way.” OMG.
“I look a fright.” Who talks like that?!
“my mother warned me about women like you.” I know he’s joking, at least I think he is, but do you really wanna be THAT girl?
“if she hadn’t found love, it wasn’t her fault.” You don’t know her well enough to say something like that.
“how many books have you published?”
“three so far. This will be my fourth.”
His eyes widened. “wow.”
Not that 4 is anything to scoff over, but considering authors have written around a hundred, it’s not that much.
Ex-wife? Good grief! These stories arent romantic at all!
Omg. Are these authors taking pointers from each other? How can 2 different authors be so the same? Ozzie and grant both dated girls that lied about them being pregnant.
Wth. This isn’t romantic. This has nothing to do with Christmas. Its STUPID.
&then he wants to tell her about it while she’s in his lap and won’t let her move away. He literally says “no distance” when she tries to move. Do you really think she wants to be near you, much less on you, while you talk about that.
forget this book, if you can even call it that. books like this shouldn't be published. they aren't even real stories!
I didn't even bother reading the 2nd book. the 1st sucked. couldn't finished the 3rd story. ugh.
I hate that I even wasted my time on this.

"Do You Hear What I Hear" by Lori Foster

SWAT team member Osbourne Decker is not happy when his friend Lucius ropes him into watching over Lucian's new wife's twin sister Marci Churchill during Christmas. He finds sweet, sexy Marci irresistible. There's only one problem - Marci claims to be a pet psychic, and Ozzie has sworn he would never get involved with a nut like that again.

This story is not perfect, but it is fun. Ozzie is a sexy hero but also something of a judgmental jerk, and Marci is very likable in theory but has some peculiarly outdated mannerisms and habits of speech that make her feel rather grandmotherly a lot of the time. If you can get over that, you can enjoy a nice fluffy read with hot sex and a satisfying ending.

"Bah Humbug, Baby" by Gemma Bruce

Consumed by their careers and fear of always coming in second for each other, Allison and Lee parted ways a year ago. But when they find themselves reunited by well meaning family members and then trapped with each other by a blizzard, they reconnect and finally face their fears and prejudices.

This was my first taste of Gemma Bruce, and it was an odd one. Overall the story and writing were decent enough but not fantastic. While I do want a hero and heroine who are human, and therefore flawed, I still want to like them, and I just couldn't like Allison and Lee as much as I wanted to. There was also something a bit off with their sex. I dunno, I just wasn't feeling it. And it didn't help AT ALL that more than once Bruce put them in physically awkward positions - like how can two people share a thorough, sexy kiss with the guy's cheek smashed against her nose? Another big problem was the ending, which really came out of nowhere and didn't fit at all.

"By Firelight" by Janice Maynard

When Grant Monroe heads to his mountain cabin to do some serious thinking, the last thing he expects is for a half frozen woman to stumble through his door. But what he REALLY doesn't expect is the immediate and intense chemistry between him and Madison Tierney. The question now is, what are they, two total strangers, going to do about it?

I had never read Maynard before and didn't know what to expect, but this was a mostly pleasant surprise. The characters are well written, as is their attraction, but it's still hard to believe they fall in love in such a short period of time - and this is coming from a reader who is a total romantic at heart. The ending was also a little choppy. Since I haven't read any novel-length work from Maynard I can't say for sure, but it seems like the type of situation where an author has a certain formula she likes to follow and in this case has trouble translating it into short story form. Still, it was a good read and I'll be looking for more from Maynard to try.

A collection of contemporary Christmas romances.
"Do you Hear what I Hear"--4 stars--Cute and sometimes hilarious story about a police officer and a woman claiming to be an "animal psychic", as well as an aerobics instructor. The whole idea of reading the minds of animals is a bit far-fetched to me, but the story is cute, especially the part about the stolen Nativity scene donkey.

"Bah, Humbug, Baby"--1 star--I was feeling a bit "bah humbug" AFTER reading this story. I had problems with this story. First of all, the writing is HORRIBLE! Much of it just seems to be phrases popping into the author's mind and makes no sense whatsoever. (Was this author drunk when she wrote this story?) This writer doesn't write complete sentences, and if she does, they often don't have any relationship to the other sentences in the paragraph.
Secondly, this story about a couple who is getting a "second chance" at their relationship constantly has sex with NO PROTECTION. This is one of my romance novel pet-peeves of mine: when writers don't acknowledge the possibility of either potentially getting pregnant or STDs from having unprotected sex. It sets a bad example to potentially younger readers who think they can have sex without consequences.

"By Firelight"--1 star--I was so unimpressed with the writing of this story that I couldn't even finish the first chapter of this story. The dialogue between characters and the inner dialogue of each character was so lame I wanted to vomit! Madison gets lost in a snowstorm and finds herself on the doorstep of Grant's cabin in the Appalachian Mountains. She reveals to him within only an hour of meeting him, "I hated that I was going to die without ever having been in love." Ugh! Does anyone know of a creepier way of scaring a guy away within minutes of meeting him than to tell him than for a woman to speak about the possibility of a relationship? Ugh! Bad writing! Then she continues to expound upon this lame conversation about the possibility of falling in love. There was absolutely no subtlety in the dialogue between the two characters, and their dialogue sounded like a conversation between two middle school students rather than two grown adults.

Do You Hear What I Hear by Lori Foster: SWAT team member, Osbourne "Ozzie" Decker, is asked by his boss to keep an eye on his wife's identical sister while they are away on their honeymoon. The problem is that Ozzie and Marci have a history. Ozzie thinks Marci is flakey (she's actually a pet psychic) but they've never been able to keep their hands off each other, so he's chosen to avoid her. Then she's suspected of stealing a donkey from a local church's nativity scene and they are thrown together again. Cute couple/short story.

Bah Humbug, Baby by Gemma Bruce: Allison Newberry and Lee Simonson are asked by family members to spend a few days at a cozy cabin near a ski resort. They just aren't told that the other--former fiance--will also be there. After being snowed in by a blizzard and facing the fact that they are stuck together for the duration, they get caught up in the (literal) magic of the little Christmas town (called "Good Cheer") and after facing a possibly deadly avalanche, they both come to terms with what is most important in their lives.

By Firelight by Janice Maynard: Madison Tierney (author of suspense novels) is caught by a surprise snowstorm while hiking the Appalachian Trail. She struggles through the blizzard until she happens upon Grant Monroe's (painter/artist) cabin. As they wait for the snow to melt so they can make it down the mountain and into town, they spend Christmas together. Includes a Titanic-like "I want to paint you in the nude" scene. Good story, but the HEA is very rushed in this one.

Very fun. The three novella were all very good, romantic and fun.

Do You Hear What I hear - H/h had a history before story starts. Marci can talk to the animals and Ozzie finds that very unsettling. He had a prior relationship with a real crazy and does not want another. Marci and Ozzie are so hot that both of them are able to get by until they can come together.

Bah Humbug, Baby - H/h had a history before the story starts. Allison and lee are set up by their siblings to spend Christmas in a small town chalet. They get snowed in and have to deal with their issues, one of which was never sex. The town is straight out of Norman Rockwell and I did not see the ending coming.

By Firelight - H/h don't know each other at story start. Maddy is hiking when a blizzard hits. She makes it to Grant's cabin and it is lust at first sight. This is one really hot novella. Both of them want true love, but fear they may never find it.

nature-quotes#299521 Bah Humbug, Baby

Along the other side of the street behind an identical mound of snow, Allison could see brightly colored hats and bare heads bobbing along. Occasionally, one would disappear from view, only to reappear a few seconds later. A green umbrella passed. A black-and-white spaniel clambered up the other side and slid toward the street. There was a bright red bow around his neck and a jingling brass bell. Two little heads appeared over the mound. Then two children, dressed in bright red snowsuits, scrambled over the top and chased the dog down the street. p134
[comment: not a literary quote at all, but it teases the imagination

Three sweet short holiday tales.

Marci Churchill is the off-the-wall twin sister of his friend's wife. A pet psychic. The one that always seems to push the buttons of Osbourne Decker. But, talking to animals or not, she stirs him up.

Allison Newberry has been off-again for a year from her on-and-off-again ex-lover. Lee Simonson would rather face the hells of war than face the loss of Allison once more. Can the meddling of their siblings stranding them in the mountains get them to finally reach for love? A little magic wouldn't hurt.

Madison Tierney is just not in a holiday mood. The ending of her parents 35-year marriage makes her question if lover is even real. Then, she ends up on the doorstep of Grant Monroe. A man that definitely gets her blood moving.

A sometimes racy, sometimes comical, thoroughly festive collection of novellas. I completely enjoyed all three stories. Each featured lively characters unexpectedly thrown together during the Christmas season. In each story the characters quickly discover, or in one case rekindle lots of romantic and sexual chemistry.

A Very Merry Christmas won't disappoint if you're looking for a light, fun read.

3 stories by some fun writers. I haven't read anything by Lori Foster that I haven't liked and this story, Do You Hear What I Hear, continues the trend. Gemma Bruce's Bah Humbug, Baby has a twist that I never expected. By Firelight by Janice Maynard is a fantasy that I could all enjoy.

Definitely not the best Lori Foster anthology. The first two stories were OK (a 2.0 rating), but that's it. The last one was much better and would have rated a 3.0 by itself. Don't think this one is going to be one I go back to again. The Night Before Christmas was much better and is in my nightstand for rereading.

This was a very fun read. Even though I had already read one of the three stories - the Lori Foster one, which was one of the four in the last book I read, the other two stories were new to me and very entertaining. These are not "heavy" reads, but just a lot of fun and enjoyable for the holidays. (Makes then last a little longer.)

The first story was my favorite but I also liked the last one a lot. The middle one, about two old flames wasn't as good, but still 3 star worthy. The men in this book are hot and can't resist their women - all good settings for hot sex!
