Holy WOAH! Fear My Mortality was definitely one heck of an awesome ride! I don't know what it is exactly about this book's summary that attracted me, but I knew once I read it that it was a book that I needed to experience. I'm so glad I went with my instincts because Fear My Mortality was a badass book and an absolute thrill to read!
The whole concept of the book was so interesting. It's a world where all humans are immortal and killing is considered to be a sport that people partake in regularly. Just how creepily cool does that sound? At the center of this world, you have Ava, the protagonist whose whole world turns upside down on the night of her Implosion, a ceremony to celebrate her first death, when her brother dies before her eyes and doesn't come back to life. Before she knows it, she's running for her life and trying to escape the grasp of those who want to do tests on her to find out whether she's a mortal too and those who want to kill her. Ava was a pretty fantastic main character for a sci-fi setting. She was thrown into this situation out of the blue with absolutely zero knowledge as to what was going on. She undeniably scared, but she also funneled her fear into something positive that helps her stay alive. She was a smart girl, who we frequently got to see use her logic and intelligence throughout Fear My Mortality. What I especially loved was how she was wary and untrusting of everyone around her - it was actually realistic given how everyone wanted something from her. She was a great main character and I loved that we got to see both her brave and vulnerable sides.
I'll admit to being a bit hesitant of her love interest, Michael, initially because he was the one to kill Ava's brother and his father was behind the testings being done on Ava. But he gained my trust slowly throughout the book. By the end of the book, I had fallen for his sweet personality, his warmth and his willingness to go to lengths for Ava. Their relationship was also one that was developed really well, in my opinion, as it was one that grew from friendship to a bit more by the end. Fear My Mortality wasn't a book heavy on the romance, so the progression in their relationship was slow, but I appreciated that. I am looking forward to more romantic scenes between them in the subsequent books though and from what I've garnered, they are going to make for an incredible couple.
The characters were great, but my favorite part of the book was the plot! It was so addicting and the kind of story that's almost impossible to put down because I HAD to know at all costs what was going to happen next. It's got plenty of twists and turns that kept me flipping through the pages and fearing for Ava and Michael's life between the Hazard Police and the underground Bashers, a gang whose goal was to eliminate the weak. I loved how Everly Frost was able to shock me so many times during the book, and it's what made the book very much entertaining for me. I'm really excited to see where the story is headed to next - it promises to be an even more epic ride!
I can't recommend Fear My Mortality enough to readers who enjoy YA science-fiction. It's not a genre that I'm a huge fan of, but this author and this book was able to impress me. Trust me when I say it's a book that you'll find impossible to put down and one that will leave you clamoring for more by the end.
