When we last checked in with the Captain Underpants book series, we went ahead and took a look at what was undeniably the most ambitious title in the series yet, that being Part 1 of a two-part set of books known as The Big Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, and as a Part 1 book, it was pretty damn solid all around. I wouldn't say it was anything too spectacular, as it didn't have too much that made it stand out from the rest, along with it having some juvenile humor that actually managed to get to me and almost made me sick at one point, but most of the rest of the book was still about as clever, fun and ridiculous as these books usually get, what with its complex, yet still understandable and very entertaining story, the same set of great characters with the same great writing behind them, the same artwork that still looks great to see, plenty of funny moments that didn't get me to laugh out loud, but they certainly got me to smile and even chuckle a couple of times, while also doing a good job at setting up just what could've possibly happened with the next entry in the series to follow. And now, since it has been quite a while since we did cover that last Captain Underpants book, I figured it's about time we go ahead and finish off this epic saga with the next entry in the series, which is known as, *takes a deep breath*.......... Captain Underpants and the Big Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy Part 2: Revenge of the Ridiculous Robo-Boogers, *runs out of breath and breathes in and out*.............. again with all of the words in your title, man!
As per usual, I was pretty excited to jump into this book after not having read anything from this series for quite a while, and I think I was even more excited for this book then I usually am for others. Since it is a Captain Underpants book, I was naturally looking forward to reading it, especially since this series has had the most consistent track record that I have seen so far from all of the book series that I have reviewed, but it is also because of the fact that this was a Part 2 book, and as Part 2's of anything usually go, they usually end up being bigger, badder, better and are a lot more exciting and action-packed then ever before, and I figured that this Part 2 would also end up being just like that. Of course, I didn't end up getting my hopes too high, because there was always the chance that this could've ended up being the book that would ruin the series, but I was still generally excited for what I was going to get out of it regardless, and it's a good thing I was too, as this is another great book that we have on our hands here. I wouldn't say it is anything perfect, as it does have some issues and it didn't turn out to be exactly what I wanted out of a Part 2 book, but it stands toe to toe with the first part of this two-parter in terms of quality and manages to still be yet another great book, one that gives you more of everything you love from this series while also continuing to expand upon this universe bit by bit, making for an entertaining read from start to finish.
The story is more or less what you would expect, with it trying to resolve all of the loose ends that we had from the previous book while the characters also run into plenty more problems in the process, and it all manages to be pretty fun and very enjoyable, even if there are some parts about it that I wasn't too big of a fan of, the characters are great, where George and Harold are still the same great protagonists that we all know and love, even if they don't get to shine quite as much in this book as others, and many of the other characters that we know all too well also still manage to be just as great and exaggeratingly fun to watch as ever, the writing is still incredibly solid, with there being plenty of fun and creative lines to be seen throughout the whole thing that ends up making you care more about the characters, whatever is going on and the story in the process, the art is still really solid, giving us more of the same kind of art that we are used to, so there isn't much else to say, so moving on, and the humor is pretty solid too, to where I still didn't laugh out loud at any of the jokes, but there were still plenty of fun and creative ones to be found here, making it so that I still ended up smiling from ear to ear throughout my whole time reading it.
Unfortunately though, there are some issues that the book has which kept me from liking it quite as much as some of the other books in the series, or even more then that of the first part of this two-parter. For one thing, there is the matter of the story, which, like I said before, is really good, and definitely has a lot of fun and interesting plotlines that it tackles, but the thing that I don't end up liking about it at the end of the day is where the story's priorities lie in terms of what it wants to focus on. For over half of the book, it primarily focuses on George and Harold trying to swap Mr. Krupp and Melvin's brains back into their own bodies, since they got swapped around at the end of Part 1 (long story, don't ask), which is fun enough, I suppose, but I feel like they give this story WAY too much attention for what it is, and it does end up getting kind of old after a while. Sure, there is enough fun material in this half of the book to where I was still getting enjoyment out of it, but there were some moments where I was reading it and thinking to myself "When are they gonna get this shit done?", which is something I shouldn't be thinking when reading any book. Not only that, but the Flip-O-Rama in this installment is also kind of lame too, as there is only one of them in this book this time around, and the entire thing just consists of Captain Underpants........ dancing in order to taunt the Booger Bots. I mean, I guess it could be seen as funny by kids reading this for the first time, but still, I definitely wish there was a little more action involved instead.
Overall, despite the story focusing on things too much at times and the lackluster Flip-O-Rama, BBBOTBBB Part 2 still managed to be a great time for the kind of book that it is, continuing on from where the last one left off and ending things off on a conclusive and satisfying note that is pretty satisfying to read through, along with the book still having a lot of the same great elements that have made a lot of the entries in this series so far really great to read, which ended up making it so that I had a really good time with it at the end of the day, what with its really entertaining, albeit somewhat messy, story, a set of great characters that are paired up with some more really solid writing, all of the same great art as ever before and humor that still manages to be clever and charming enough for the kind of book that this is to where it made me enjoy it more all the way through. I would definitely recommend it for those that loved Part 1 of this story, as well as for those who are huge fans of the other Captain Underpants books and similar books in general, as while this may not end up reaching the peak of the series, there is still enough great content to love and enjoy here that does end up making the thing worth reading at least once, which is more then anyone can ask for at the end of the day. Although, I do question why they did end off the book with George and Harold glitching out in that time machine instead of returning things back to normal. They probably should've made a Part 3 to this story in that case, but I don't think that would work, considering I don't think boogers are gonna be that largely involved in the next story. Then again though, this is Captain Underpants.......... they would find a way to fit that in.
