In life, there is one thing we can all agree on: cookies.
And there is no greater expert on this endless source of joy, warmth, and crumbs than Cookie Monster. In The Joy of Cookies, Cookie Monster offers deep thoughts on life, friendship, baking, and the love of cookies. He serves as our guide to all things cookie and shares how best to fully experience the joy cookies bring us.
This is a book to get us through the dark times and celebrate the good times, and to help us more fully understand who we truly are as both cookie lovers and as people.
It’s the perfect gift for friends, family, and fellow monsters—the gift of cookies.
An Imprint Book
“Fans of the big blue guy will love this title, which, just like a warm chocolate chip cookie, oozes joy and happiness.” —School Library Journal
I was supposed to shelve this new book at one of my libraries today, but there was no way it was going anywhere except home with me! I have been a huge Cookie Monster fan since I was a kid. He was the best part of Sesame Street hands down. I've been carting around my Cookie Monster stuffed animal and cookie jar for decades now.
As a grown-up, I do a passable imitation that greatly pleased my daughter and niece when they were younger. (I made certain to buy my girl lots of Cookie Monster books,) And I found myself today reading several pages out loud to myself using that voice.
This is a total nostalgia fest. And I think it is totally aimed at grown-ups, because there is none of that "Cookie is a sometime food" crap that I heard they had started doing on Sesame Street in recent years. This is Cookie Monster in all his glory chowing down on cookies by the ton.
The wisdom of Cookie Monster. This feel-good book is delightful and charming; parts of it made me laugh, and parts of it (like a good cookie) were unexpectedly sweet. Cookie Monster's naive positivity and unbridled joy are palpable here, and they lift this book above other inspirational collections. This book feels like more than just a gimmick, or a one-off joke stretched to book length. This feels warm and genuine somehow. And adapting famous quotes to make them cookie-centric is just brilliant. Cookie recipes—including one with no dairy, eggs, nuts, or gluten—are a pleasant bonus. I can't wait to go home and try them.
PreRead: Gotta confess: the big blue monster is my favorite muppet! I'm a sucker for anything related to him. So it was a no-brainer for me to grab this title.
PostRead: What's NOT to love about this book? It's equal parts funny, uplifting, and surprisingly deep! (Screw Elmo: I always knew it was Cookie who was the monster ahead of his time!)
SO ADORABLE..... two things I read that I enjoyed. 1. Early Bird gets worm, but cookie taste better than worm, so me sleep in. 2. Count your cookies, not your problems.
Suddenly it's very difficult for me to use the word I or include linking verbs. Anyway, me happy me read book.
All kidding aside, this is adorable. For some reason, it was stashed in the kids' picturebook section at Barnes & Noble, but the humor is much more for a grown-up, in my opinion (Stephen Colbert gets a reference at least once), and of the three cookie recipes, one is particularly complex (double boiler usage and glazing). Do note all three, including the vegan one, actually sound remarkably good.
I wish I had Cookie Monster's level of manic enthusiasm about anything.
Who knew a monster could give so much good advice! This cute little book will have you singing “C is for cookie, that good enough for me,” right along with Cookie Monster. While Cookie Monster admits that cookies may not solve all the world’s problems, eating cookies is still worth a try. So find a friend, get a big batch of cookies, and enjoy life together. The book does have a few recipes with rather interesting directions, and the illustrations are darling, just like Cookie Monster.
On the in between reads kick, I turn to one that I’ve been wanting to read for a while and oddly, struggled to find time for! Cookie Monster’s Guide to Life: The Joy of Cookies was a splendid read! Written by Cookie Monster himself, this delightful little book will inspire you in many ways.
This was a cute little read! I love those cute little books that prove to be motivating and make you laugh or smile all the same! I used to have a collection of Zelda Wisdom books that provided the same feelings! In this little book we get to have little nuggets of wisdom from Cookie Monster himself! He will help you to find the joy in the little things in life. But mostly cookies!
As a kid, Cookie Monster was my favorite character on Sesame Street. Us cookielovers have to stick together, just like us booklovers. To be truthful, some of Cookie’s advice was very sound, if still a little funny. He made some great points that I wasn’t really expecting to be so thought-provoking.
As a bonus, there are THREE cookie recipes in here that Cookie highly recommends! I especially enjoyed his comments on not eating the cookie dough…though I can’t say I will take that advice, though health reasons says I should! But as Cookie would say, “you only live once. But if you eat cookies, once enough.” I think he’d respect my decision!
The book itself is rather adorable as well! A huge bite was taken out of it, because it’s a book about cookies of course! And I discovered there’s a rather colorful copyright warning, a delightful dedication page, a humorous author’s note, and a warming acknowledgements page as well! Seriously, this book was all kinds of fun and had me smiling throughout! Definitely one I will return to when I’m having a bad day!
Very cute tongue-in-cheek book of wisdom, recommended to anyone who loves Cookie Monster and cookies. A nod to the monster in all of us, and a reminder to be mindful of self-acceptance, gratitude, friendship, and the healing power of cookies.
This now has a spot in my kitchen because it just made me laugh out loud throughout. Plus whenever I need to feel validated for baking or eating cookies....
Cookie Monster is so cute. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his cookie recipes look delicious. I hope to obtain this book (read it at the City Newsstand).
There's a lot to love about this book, but I think my favorite is that Cookie was thoughtful enough to include a recipe that even monsters with nut allergies, lactose or gluten intolerance, or who practice veganism can enjoy.
In this small volume, Cookie Monster offers readers his classic wisdom which always incorporates cookies. Each page offers something like, "Keep calm and eat cookies" or another small bit of insight from the cookie-loving monster we all love. There are also a few recipes included so you can make cookies just like Cookie Monster loves! Its a quick read and can be consumed in one short sitting.
This is a gift book at its finest--and a great idea for cookie lovers! I'm an unabashed cookie fanatic so this was a big hit with me. The color scheme is super simple, the shape of the book--featuring a big bite out of the top corner--is fun, and there is not much to complain about unless you are wanting more substance. There is little here beyond the "thoughts" of a big blue muppet who loves cookies so its pretty much exactly what you'd expect.

This book is like a trip into the mind of not just a connoisseur but also a manic obsessive. Muppet fans need this book, actually, EVERYONE needs joy filled this book! Very easy to read and with some good life lessons written by the lovable Cookie Monster who you can hear as you read through the book (which doesn't take long) and there's even three cookie recipes with the instructions to "Smoosh all the ingredients together" which I've got to try out. One point I'd like to make is you will need a box of cookies near you after you finish the book, just make sure Cookie Monster doesn't take them. The die cut bite mark in the corner is a fun addition to this fun book.
Yummy! What fun. Cookie Monster may take a backseat to Elmo these days, but if you watch an episode it’s obvious that he’s the true talent. And now a best selling author to boot. Mr. Monster offers us simplistic advice on living life (and enjoying cookies) to the fullest by being a good person and learning not to sweat the small stuff. “Fill life with people you love. Fill tummy with cookies you love.” Sound advice.
Favorite quote which so accurately describes how I feel at all times:
“I’m just one cookie away from being full...always.”
You could enjoy reading this with a child, and they do add in the things about eating other kinds of food too, but for adults there is a lot about this furry blue cookie-eating machine to make you smile and laugh, and that should be enough. It's not anything groundbreaking or new; it's just fun.
That being said, I was impressed that they have a sugar cookie recipe with instructions on how to adapt it to a chocolate chip (or chippy) recipe, as well as a vegan recipe for all monsters.
“No cry because cookie is finished. Smile because cookie happened.”
I bought this book for my boyfriend as a little stocking stuffer so I gave it a quick read after he’d finished it. It really was a quick read - probably only took me about five minutes? I’ve never seen Sesame Street but the Cookie Monster seems like an awesome character.
This book has made me laugh, is full of good advice and even has some cookie recipes in it. For me, that’s enough to warrant a five star review.
I'm so disappointed. In myself. I guess I'm not a true Cookie Monster fan. I thought this was too long and a little boring. Some of Cookie Monster's truisms were repetitive and others fell flat for me.
