Nerissa has the Heart, and all of Kandracar is at her mercy! The girls must face her again, but are they prepared for the sacrifices required for victory...? Will Nerissa finally have her revenge??
Elisabetta Gnone is an Italian writer. In April 2001, she co-created the Italian comic/magazine W.I.T.C.H. with Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. The publication was later made into the television series of the same name. Gnone also wrote the children's trilogy Fairy Oak: Il segreto delle gemelle (The Secret of the Twins), L'incanto del buio (The Spell of Darkness), and Il potere della luce (The Power of Light). She expanded the Fairy Oak Universe with four more books, "The four mysteries": "Captain Grisam's love", "Shirley's wizarding days", "Flox smiles in autumn", and "Good-bye Fairy Oak".
I love "Hi zombie!", Cassidy, Will's frog pjs, the heart chosing the Guardian, seeing Elyon again even if it wasn't for that long, Haylin's braces, toddler! Will and her eventual friendship with Mandy. BUT I'll never stop being salty about Cornelia and Caleb. They were perfect. They could've worked something out. They used to DREAM about each other, they're the reason they could beat Nerissa, why weren't they end game? And for such a stupid reason too. Also, I hate Will's dad. I can't wait for him to disappear forever.
This is the closest to 5/5 yet! I'd completley forgotten the storyline with Will's father, so it was "fun" to read the start of it again — and now I have to wait 'till may for the rest?!? But yeah. This also takes into account the relationships like in the previous volume, but on a much bigger and mlre serious scale. Parental/child relationship. Boyfriend/girlfriend. Friendship. Not to mention the astral drop story—line. It's not my fav, and I remember where this is going, but even if I'm not a big fan, it is interesting seeing how the magic affect day to day life for the girls. The only thing I miss is the double—story of Caleb and Cornelia. The one where we get to see how life would turn out for them in either world. I really, really hope it gets included in a future book
now i remember why this was my favorite arc — nerissa be crazy!! seeing those panels of her march towards kandrakar awakened old nightmares 🫨
anyway love how that wrapped up and how quickly the series and the characters are maturing. we're really exploring themes like breakups, divorce, even an astral drop' s agency (!), all while hay lin gets her w.i.t.c.h. themed braces (◡ ‿ ◡ ✿)
*Note: This review is for all three volumes in Part II (W.I.T.C.H. #4-6) since they are really a set* A great follow up to the original Meridian storyline, these comics continue to not disappoint. The artwork is consistently beautiful, fully colored, the story progresses in a logical direction, and the guardians continue to grow into their roles. After Meridian was secured in Part I, the guardians feel a bit lost and no longer quite so unified now that their goal has been accomplished. Part II introduces a new villain, and tells the story of the previous generation of guardians, only briefly mentioned by Hay Lin's grandmother in Part I. The new villain challenges the guardians in new ways, and the five girls grow closer and more comfortable in their roles. It's a great continuation and I'm looking forward to more in Part III (coming May 2018).
That attention to detail... One of the things I love about these comics is their attention to detail. Not only is the artwork consistently great, but there are frequently beautiful backgrounds to look at, and the artwork maintains consistency among its characters. Each of the five girls, and many side characters, have their own unique look and sense of fashion. I rarely see them wearing the same clothes, but their sense of style is always consistent and serves to differentiate the five main girls. They also all have their own unique personalities and thus far I have never thought they acted out of character. They are five distinct characters, and I love them all, which is hard to achieve when you're juggling so many main characters. You can tell a lot of effort went into these characters and this artwork and I love it.
Kandrakar My one complaint is I'm not the biggest fan of Kandrakar. And they have a much larger role than they did in Part I. I've never liked it much when "chosen one" stories involve these essentially omniscient overseers who manipulate the chosen ones and even though they know all this information, they withhold it. If the Oracle says one more time "all will be revealed in time" or "it is not yet time for me to tell you [insert important plot info]" I swear... At one point the Oracle erases their memories of an incident for a couple months because "they are not yet ready" and the girls live out their lives normally without realizing anything is wrong until their memories are given back. It's weird and heavy-handed and stupid. At one point the Oracle says something like "we cannot interfere with people's decisions" when trying to justify why they are not taking action, when not a few chapters back they had manipulated the girls' memories to literally interfere with their decisions. It's infuriating. I would not miss Kandrakar at all if they were removed from the plot.
Elyon If you liked Elyon, I know I did, she's a great character, I'm sorry to tell you her role has been significantly reduced. However, she still at least pops up from time to time.
The boyfriends Just about all the girls have their own boy by this point, and sadly the plot relies on some of the worst tropes to create drama. I have lost count of the number of times one of the girls has seen their boy interacting with or hugging or talking to another girl, and without even asking the boy who they are (they're never another girlfriend of course, it's always a misunderstanding) they just instantly assume the worst and get mad. How did they not learn their lesson the first time, ugh.
I feel like they could have packaged / split up the volumes better. This whole volume is called 'Nerissa's revenge', but her part of the story is over by the 50% mark, so the rest of the story has nothing to do with her. The rest of the story is filler between the end of the Nerissa arc and the start of the next arc. But because it is filler, it allows for the characters to be better developed.
Back to the Nerissa portion of the book - I do feel like it was all over a bit too quickly. She was such a threat to Kandrakar, and yet she was defeated relatively easily. I know that this is a kids story, but there were no casualties (except Yuba I guess), and no one even got hurt in the battle. I liked the fact that the spirit of Cassidy was able to create a replica heart and give it to Will. The two hearts then merged and the product chose Will to be the keeper.
I found it a little weird that Cornelia and Caleb broke up so easily after everything they had been through. And then she is so upset about being in his presence that she refuses to go to Metamoor to return him home and see Elyon. Elyon was her best friend and she wasn't interested in seeing her because it would mean spending more time near Caleb.
Taranee also comes more into her own in the filler section of the story. She always tries to do the right thing, but her mother never believes / trusts her. When Taranee's mother slaps her and calls her a disappointment in front of her friends and the boy that she likes (you would think a lawyer would know better, but nope!) - this adds fuel to the fire of Taranee's rebellion which I honestly can't blame her for.
We also get the introduction of Will's father. He portrays himself as a cool guy who is desperate to win back his wife and kid, but it's pretty obvious that he is a sleezeball.

The beginning of an arc always takes at least one volume to set up. Luba member of the Kandrakar Council, tries to reason with the Oracle concerning the inability of the guards to do a correct job. Thus releasing a changeling, the group explodes and releases Nerissa without knowing it. We discover the story of the older generation of guardians, including Hay Lin’s grandmother, who shows that the series is maturing. The girls learn of Cassidy’s death, Nerissa’s descent into hell, Caleb’s torture, Luba’s betrayal and sacrifice, in short nothing very joyful. There is also a complex but interesting part about a constellation that would conceal the soul of the deceased guardian. All this punctuated by new male heads, to remind us that it is still about five teenage girls who sometimes need to return to a simple life.
Cornelia is the most broken because she discovers the pain and then the loss, the powers of the elements disappear, Kandrakar dies, Will risks seeing her life change.. A lot of sadness and yet, almost every chapter ends with a laugh or a smile from our group. This arc sees the gradual but effective change of their maturity, they remain positive at all costs and we have everything to learn from them. Even if I remain mixed about the battle against Nerissa, the story progresses and tell yourself that we are only at the beginning of the collection!
~quick thoughts~ • this arc concludes Nerissa's story pretty soon and already sets up a lot for the next arc, maybe I expected a bit more for the whole fight with Nerissa • the whole fight is JAW-DROPPING BEAUTIFUL • now that I've grown up, I understand Caleb's predicament way more • Will's mom is my mom, yikes • all the power to ya, Taranee!
This book was packed full with so much content. By the end of the book I was surprised I was still reading the same one! It's interesting how early the main plot of the arc ends, and how the second half of the story sets the tone and gets things building up to the next arc. A neat way to foreshadow things. I also loved the take on real life things in the second half of the book, which the first half focused significantly less on.
I didn't like Will in this volume: she's petty and jealous of everyone. On the contrary, Taranee is getting better and better. I love the way she stands her ground.
Nerissa is defeated and everything seems to be back to normal. And Will is happy because her father finally came back. Her mother doesn't believe in his good intentions but she can't do anything to keep Will away from him.
Sigh! I hope they'll pay me soon 'cause I need to read Part III as soon as possible!
The ending picked up, but I remember this arc being cooler somehow. I think I might be thinking of the manga version perhaps? If there even is such a thing.
At times, the explanations for the magic and events seems a little... confusing. And strange. Things don't always fit together? I don't know. I'm pushing through these earlier arcs at the moment.
First 6 books are published in Turkish, and I read them consecutively. Sometimes flow of events are complicated and seemed nonsense but didn’t affect the whole reading experience. maybe it’s because of the translation idk. Story is captivating. It felt nostalgic to reading about the my most loved childhood show!! Excited for the rest of the series(they haven’t been published in Turkish yet)
This was a pretty fun addition to the series, but the last fourth was so out of place with the rest of the arc? Like basically the arc ended halfway through, there was a little bit of falling action, and then it went way off course. I don't know where it's gonna go from here, to be honest.
The big battle for Nerissa's revenge didn't feel as impactful as I was hoping. The other aspects about the character development and world building were way more interesting.
I am more intrigued for the next part of the story. The Nerissa's arc didn't feel as developed as I hoped it will be.
probably among the best and thought out instalments + always amazing to see the portrayal of and focus on dreamworld, astral projection, astrology, mind/body, meditation, etc. reimagined in a fantastic setting but based on real-world ideas.
This wasn't my favourite, but still good. Sets us up nicely for the next bit. Unsure what to expect and how they will keep the story interesting but already have the next 3 books ready for perusal.
The Nerissa story arch was very short, and a bit confusing, really wish the story was longer. The side stories where much better and character growth was ever well done.
A bit of a left down finale. It reminded me of Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight-books; Promising a great confrontation with a good battle and then giving us some wishy-washy version of a battle.
