While war tensions are mounting between the United Canadian and American States and the Compensation army, a young, inexperienced Shadowrunner stumbles upon some information that will ensure victory to the faction who can secure it first. From the author of the Secrets of Power series.
I find the world of Shadowrun very enjoyable, even if it is very corny.
I liked Charette’s “Secrets of Power” trilogy and the spin off “Never Trust an Elf.” So I wanted to check out the 5th and final Shadowrun book he wrote.
The beginning was not as enthralling as his other novels. The characters just don’t compare to Dodger, Kharm etc. However, once this one gets going it really is hard to put down. It’s very arresting. It’s much more a story of political machinations than the other Shadowrun books he wrote.
It suffers from the same uneven writing as his other works, and weak ending, but it has the same greater than sum of its parts charm. If you read the others, and liked them, I would recommend this.
Finally, it’s funny I like Shadowrun because it has the fun elements from Cyberpunk, without the being a alarmingly accurate to the dystopia we got. However, this book published in 1996 has a lot of parallels to 2020 America. It was fairly unsettling. Cyberpunk was a warning, we all should have listened. Even when it was being dumb fun, we should have listened.
At first it was a cool experience, with some favourable side characters like dodger appearing. Then it got really convoluted though.
The team of shadowrunners is pretty lovable with interesting characters. I feel like so many things were set up but only about a third or a quarter of them actually had any kind of payoff. The story was all over the place and I had no idea what was happening for about 30% of the book. Everything was chaotic.
Overall a meh read, but atleast I got to know the general map of the American shadowrunning universe - including a map of America in that time.
If you want to read good books in the Fasa world Shadowrun or Battletech look for Charrette, he knows is stuff. Nothing spectacular or innovative but always solid mixing politic and action.
The story is about Tom Rocquette a soldier with a big career in the Army who suddenly starts to question obeying order without question when the Army clash with rioters. Finally, he takes action that can compromise his career but save many life...
Can't really be more specific on the plot, this is a 270 pages only book with the first half for the setting so it's on the lite side. Action is good but too many coincidences happen in the plot to make this novel above average.
A great book from the early years of the Shadowrun fiction. This book deals with a man who gets pulled into the shadows after helping a group of runners. His brother, an officer in the army, finds himself embroiled in the same mystery from the other side. A fantastic read that was incredibly well written.
Pretty good overall. The rise of Andy from punk newbie to shadowrunner was an interesting journey. The end was a bit too quick to tie up the larger, complex plot/scheming that was behind the whole storyline.
Another Shadowrun Book. This was really good. Charrette is the better of the two shadowrun authors I have read. I believe he has written for some of the games supplements also.
