Ava and her younger sister Lexi are living in the small town Riebeeckstad together with their father. Life changed completely when Ava and Lexi's mother lost her life in a car crash. The sisters and their father tried to pick up the pieces and are living their lives the best way they possibly can, but it isn't always easy. They have their loss to deal with, but their can't take their time to mourn, because there's a huge threat hanging over them. The black tide is a terrifying and deadly virus and it's spreading all over the world. Some countries have closed their borders and others are barely holding on. How long will it take before the black tide will make it to Ava's town?

Ava works at a pharmacy and now that her father doesn't have a job anymore her paycheck is desperately needed to pay the bills. The schools are closed, food and other groceries are becoming scarce and overpriced and people are getting violent. Ava sees first-hand how people react in times of despair and it's not a pretty sight. When the army arrives people are hoping that the soldiers will keep them safe from the virus. What will happen when the army turns out to be their worst enemy?

Ava needs to take care of her sister and she'll do anything to make Lexi's life a bit better. Some of the choices she makes are dangerous and selfish, but she needs these outlets to stay sane. I loved her strength and admired how she keeps fighting for a better life. Some people become friends and others can best be avoided. In a dying world she has to listen to her gut instinct if she wants to live another day and that is exactly what Ava does. She is a true heroine and I loved her and her sister from the start.

The Black Tide: Remnants is a blood-curdling story about surviving in a virus infected world. The fact that deadly viruses do exist in real life made this book even more terrifying for me. When the world falls apart, the ones who remain won't always be the people with the best intentions. I've read a lot of books written by Baileigh Higgins and I already know that she's more than skilled at writing stories that will haunt you long after you finish the book. The Black Tide is another brilliant first story by one of my all time favorite horror authors. It's a promising start of the Tides of Blood series and I can't wait to read the next chapter of Ava and Lexi's adventure.

Fantasy and science fiction are some of my favorite genres, and I find it harder these days to find books in F/SF that I can’t put down. Not because books are getting worse; in fact, I am constantly amazed by the sheer volume of great genre books out there. No, the main reason these days that I can’t burn the midnight oil reading a good book is because I have three little ones who will be awake with the sun. So those days of all-night reading sessions has faded into the sheer reality of being a sleep-deprived parent.

But when I do run across a book like that, a book that I just can’t put down — no matter that I can mentally feel the pain of a toddler poking me in the face three hours later and saying, “Wake up, Mommy!” — that is a book I need to share.

The Black Tide I: Remnants by Baileigh Higgins qualifies for this category. I love apocalyptic fiction, with its examination of the human reaction to catastrophe. While there are some elements in this book in common with other great fiction in the category, such as Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, I feel that Ms. Higgins shows a different side of the apocalypse. The book explores what I feel is an underrepresented subset of survivors, which are the young.

Although adults are better equipped to deal with disaster, what happens to the children and teenagers who have to face it, as well as confront the confusing transition of moving from child to adult?

The Black Tide is the name of a plague that sweeps across the world, starting in China. Some countries have a better resistance strategy, such as the United States, which closes its borders and uses its relative isolation to help halt the spread of the disease.

Others see their governments collapse before they are able to institutionalize counter-measures against the sickness. South Africa, though, is at a lucky juxtaposition of factors. Because of an airline strike, fewer contaminated travelers enter the country, and the country is able to quickly close its borders in advance. While the disease penetrates, it does so more slowly.

The story is told from Ava’s perspective, with a couple of brief forays into the mind of her ten-year-old sister, Lexi. Ava has recently graduated from high school, and the story drops the reader into a world where plague has finally reached their small town of Riebeeckstad.

From trying to maintain their normal lifestyle of going to school and working their jobs, Ava, Lexi and their father are suddenly faced with the reality of mob panic against the perceived end of the world. Their father loses his job and goes off to seek another, but he never returns home. Ava is left on her own with a ten-year-old girl when martial law is declared. They end up confined to their home, subsisting on basic rations handed out by the army.

Her life would be bleak if it weren’t for their neighbor, Andy, a boy Ava’s age who takes it upon himself to help them. Eventually, they move into Andy’s house, sharing quarters with his younger brother and their mother. But the outside world isn’t safe. As Ava’s boss tells her before he dies, “Anger and desperation can make killers of us all.”

But Ava doesn’t give up. “Pessimism was a luxury for those that had nobody who depended on them.” Instead, she discovers that Andy is a part of a group running reconnaissance missions to steal from the army, who are in control of the food supply and who therefore hoard the best goods. Although the thieves keep some of their ill-gotten goods for themselves, most they give away to places that have displaced people and orphans, the ones who get the scarce supply of the worst rations.

But with every illicit endeavor comes risk, and the group is composed merely of teenagers trying to do some good and feel alive again in a world turned on its head. When their Robin Hood activities are stopped in a tragic encounter, Ava becomes a fugitive from the last vestige of governmental control in a dying world. She must decide what to do in order to protect the only family she has left, her sister Lexi.

I don’t want to give away any more spoilers. The story takes more dramatic twists and turns after this point and I enjoyed the journey, even if the reader might guess a few of them might be coming.

I loved every moment of Ava’s story. If I had a criticism of the book, it was that I feel the passages showing us the viewpoint of Ava’s little sister, Lexi, strike me as unnecessary to the story. I feel that Lexi’s voice is a bit young for a ten-year-old. At that age, kids tend to know quite a bit. Lexi’s overly young voice pulled me out of the story somewhat.

But, ignoring these brief digressions, I think the book is a great addition to the apocalypse genre. It explores some ideas that may not have been entirely new, but it shows a refreshing perspective. And the tone and voice of the narrative kept me fascinated and turning the page to find out what happened next.

This book is the first in a series, with the second one currently in the works. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I’m hoping Ms. Higgins writes quickly! I hope you enjoy reading The Black Tide I: Remnants as much as I did, and I look forward to the next book in the Tides of Blood series when it’s released.

While it is all too easy for me to sympathize with these characters about their plights it is harder for me to empathize. Especially with main character Ava as she is in turns, arrogant, selfish, thoughtless and too hard to connect with most of the time. When she is not those things she is whining more than looking for concrete solutions to actually help herself and the others.

By the time Ava finally does step up and commit to her responsibilities the story is closing in on it's ending. An ending that also left me with conflicting feelings about her as well.

I like that this takes place outside of the U.S., in this case South Africa. However, from the story, it could have been anywhere since not much really highlighted the country, other than place names. It did a good job in the beginning with the growing concerns of the pandemic and the increasing impact of supply chain interruption. The story was diluted a bit with a lot of teen angst and Ava's various love interests as well as her frustration and worry about being her sister's caregiver (entirely understandable). We miss a big chunk of the change in the Black Tide epidemic as we only find out in a re-telling to Ava. The writing and editing were overall pretty good and as I am interested in what happens next, I will likely continue the series.

Baileigh Higgins brings realistic humanity and heart stopping adventure to the apocalypse! Set where she lives, to us in the US, exotic South Africa, The Black Tide: Remnants is the beginning of a thilling new post apocalyptic series.

Ava, very early twenties, lost her mother not long ago. With her father, they struggle to keep food on the table, often going without herself, for much younger sister Lexi. Both are fortunate to still be employed full-time, many more are not. This day when Ava heads to work, her life will change forever. Unbeknownst to her a world wide virus has reached her shores. The old world, her old town, is unraveling around her. How will this one small family fare now at the virtual end of the world? Who will survive? What allies or foes will they encounter? What sort of human will Ava be at days end?

There are many beauties to Baileigh's writing. One is the glimpses of the majesty of her homeland we view through Ava's eyes along with the horror and atrocities she witnesses. Another is the believability of plot and action, extremely exciting, yes, but life like. Perhaps the best element is the developement of her charaters. They are not merely descriptions with scant detail, but fully realized people you come to care about. There are no super villans or super heros just ordinary people you might see at the market or theater, caught in an extreme time. Their interactions, understandable behavior. Each has their own struggle in life both internal and external. Baileigh Higgins is a blend of literary, post apocalypse with a touch of romance, ah but that would be literary also!

An unstoppable beast

The "Black Tide". That's what we called it, for that's what it was. An unstoppable beast that devoured mankind, sweeping across the continents in a tidal wave of death leaving behind blackened corpses . Ninety percent of all human life ceased to exist. Leaving behind the "immune". It started first in China, spread to Asia, then thru Eastern Europe. Within weeks the death toll was staggering. Over hundreds of millions, either infected or dead. The virus spread by physical contact, bodily fluids, n then mutated n went airborne. It had a 5-7 day gestation with flu like symptoms, fever, fatigue, coughing, sneezing, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea. Toward the end of the illness, those who were infected, had bleeding from the gums, nose , ears... etc. When it mutated, no one was "safe".
Survival was hectic as shops n supplies were running dry. Food deliveries slowed. Prices soared. It was a constant struggle to put food on the table. Eventually schools n businesses closed. People were hungry, disgusted, angry, n fed up with the government response. Looting n rioting escalated until martial law was enforced.
This book was so lifelike as we find ourselves in a somewhat similar situation today. The only difference is there's a cure . What would life be like if we were in the same impossible state? How would we react? Would we be totally prepared for any and all scenarios? Or just as "naive" ?

Intense apocalypse-post-apocalyse story. I liked the idea that the people cling onto normality, trying to sit it our first, even going to work while they can. It's just a virus after all! But as health and people go down, so does humanity. And the heroine Ava is not always brave. She has her dark moments, trying to cope with reality. And then the virus mutates and a bad situation gets worse. A very realistic scenario.
Just a few unlogical moments . But these are easily forgiven as the story is flowing so nicely I couldn't put the book down. Needless to say, I can't wait to continue the story.

Fantastic first book in series!

I absolutely loved this book & couldn't tear through it fast enough! I'm addicted to zombie Apocalypse books & was doubtful that I would even remotely enjoy just a good old fashioned disease end of the world theme, but not only did it grip me from the first pages, I actually loved it!

The entire book, I was picturing myself in the characters shoes & asking myself what would I do in their situation. I even had some interesting discussions with my husband who is an Army veteran & much more experienced in the business of survival.

I'm racing to start the 2nd book of the series just as soon as I finish this review & I can't wait!

I have the omnibus edition of this series and book one plunges straight into the lives of those involved in a virus sweeping the world, called The Black Tide, which kills everyone unless immune. It’s based in South Africa.

Although it switches characters, its first-person narrative – a firm favourite writing style for me. The characters are well-portrayed and relatable. Ava is the main character but there are others that fit well into the plot. There are good, bad and downright nasty characters that make the story tense and suspenseful.

There is violence, of course, but it’s done in a way that’s right for the story.

Overall, a great start and a recommended read.

Riveting beginning

It seems I've committed myself to the trilogy of The Black Tide. It wasn't my original plan, but I'm pretty grateful for how it's turning out.
This is a well-written TEOTWAWKI beginning. In Book 1, well, So. Much. Happens.
It's a captivating read with event after event changing the setting and dynamics. It's complicated and simple. It is definitely worth the time investment, IMO.
I won't say more, as it needs to be experienced and I don't wish to take that away from anything. Also, I don't want to say more bc I'm off to read Book 2 while I have time.

Another Fantastic Series By Baileigh Higgins!!!

A great book with loads of action, suspense and emotions!!! What it doesn't have is a lot of blood and guts, and zombies!!! LOL. But that's OK, it's still a fantastic book! The characters are very believable and the storyline easy to follow. Hardly a dull moment in the lives of these youngsters!!!! Can't wait to get started on book two! Well done, Ms. Higgins, well done!!! Thank you for keeping us well entertained!!! Mike Hansen, Nuneaton, England

A great book

Book 1 in another series by one of my favorite PA authors. A well-written plausible apocalyptic story. She jumps right in with very little medical viral explanation. In light of our current pandemic, no further explanation is needed. I am enjoying watching the young protagonist mature into a strong woman, who will no doubt survive. Looking forward to book 2 immediately.

I have read about half a dozen of Baileigh Higgins' books and I like them all. This one, The Black Tide is a bit different from her zombie genre books (which I love). She explores the desperate feelings that our protagonist goes through. Wanting to be there for her younger sister/hating the responsibility for her younger sister, guilt, love, doing what is right, doing what is needed to be done. I did enjoy this book. Wasn't sure if I was going to or not but it turned out to be a really good read and I will be reading the next one too!

This story is amazing to read. Easy to follow. Whole plot thought out well. Great location and the steps required in this global event and the impact on different people. Can be read on its own however I think this series has so many possibilities. Highly recommended.

Very different look at the apocalypse. No zombies but plenty of other monsters. Ava tries to keep her sister Lexi safe while an epidemic destroys the human race. Their lives are turned upside down as all the people they knew growing up die around them. Higgins does a great job of describing this new world so that the reader is right there with the girls.

Another win

This book is another win for Baileigh Highins , as she knocks it out of the park again. With a whole new twist on the end of the world. She writes the scenery so well that you know that she has been there. Between the new twists and turns , i wast sure what would happen next and the surprises just kept coming , I cannot wait for the next book.

Apocalyptic, dystopian story that you don't know what is going to happen. One of those that you race through because you want to know what happens. It flows really well and the characters are believable and well developed.
