Lord Andrew Mabry, the second son of the Duke of Greystone, has no desire to marry. As the spare, he has no obligation to provide an heir and he rather enjoys spending his days and nights in play with the demimonde. But more and more of late, he finds himself wanting to play naughty games with the American heiress, Gina Hammersley.
After her scandalous older sister marries a marquess, Gina Hammersley suddenly finds herself the darling of London with beaux a plenty calling on her, sending flowers, and filling her dance cards. Unfortunately, the one she desires most is the one who has no wish to be caught in the marriage Lord Andrew Mabry.
But when they are discovered in a compromising situation, this unlikely pair must decide whether to face scandal or discover if the passion they’ve always felt is strong enough to lead them into love.
Lorraine Heath has always had a soft spot for emotional love stories. No doubt because growing up, watching movies with her mom, she was taught that the best movies "won't half make you cry."
She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan, and she enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.
When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She began her career writing training manuals and computer code for the IRS, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since.
Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA®. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA TODAY and the New York Times.
The author of more than 60 novels, she writes historical and contemporary romance for adults and historical romance for teen readers.
Under the names Rachel Hawthorne and Jade Parker, she writes popular contemporary, historical, and paranormal romance for teens readers. She also writes young adult novels with her son under the name J. A. London.
Historical romance. The spare falls in love. The heiress isn’t shy or afraid to ask for what she wants. When she can’t sleep after a formal ball, she accompanied the hero to a brothel. He expected her to be shocked and refuse to go in. Instead she goes off with one of the girls hand in hand upstairs and behind a closed door. Soon he is so jealous he pushes into the room to stop whatever is going on.
I won’t spoil the story further, but it’s fun and racy and romantic. No erotic but a little bit hot and sexy. Unexpected.
ARC provided by Edelweiss and Publisher for an honest review.
What a fun, steamy and sweet read. I normally don't care for novella's but this one was written well and engaging.
Lord Andrew Mabry is a fun loving rogue who has no plans to marry. He's the spare so no need, so he enjoys life to the fullest.
American Heiress Virginia Hammersley is looking for her prince charming. The man she will fall in love with and marry. Virginia has a problem and the problem is Lord Andrew. She's attracted to her sisters husbands brother, a man who doesn't plan to marry or fall in love. And the other issues is that she's somewhat expected to marry a nobleman.
The two that shouldn't but couldn't help the themselves. Virginia and Andrew embark on a relationship that wasn't suppose to happen, but did. The two have some cute and funny dialogue, great chemistry and sweet moments.
A fun and well written short story that had some steamy moments.
I love Gina's character in the previous book, so I was excited to read her romance. Gina is an heiress with a sister who had a scandalous reputation. She knows she has to get married, but she finds herself intrigued by her sister's husband's brother. He's the second son and he's determined to never marry and live out his days as a bachelor. Gina and Andrew end up spending a lot of time together, especially when Gina decides she wants some experiences not proper for a lady. This romance was fun, but definitely not my favorite of the series. I enjoyed watching Gina and Andrew fall in love and have some scandals things of their own happen to them, but it was also a weaker book compared to the first three of the series (which I really loved). I still recommend checking it out if you've read the series, but these last two didn't finish the series on a strong note.
This novella is the story of Lord Andrew Mabry, the brother of Lady Grace(When the Duke Was Wicked) and Alistair, Marquess of Rexton(An Affair with a Notorious Heiress) and the son of Frannie Darling and Sterling Mabry, the eighth Duke of Greystone(Surrender to the Devil), and Gina Hammersley, the sister of Tillie, Lady Landsdowne(When the Duke Was Wicked). It starts with the wedding of Rex and Tillie where the hero and heroine serve as best man and maid of honor.
Gina is an American who fell in love with Englend when she moved here for her sister's debut. She was only 11 when that happened and, being an heiress, her dream was to marry a Peer of the Realm. Her sister's scandal influenced her debut, she wasn't as sought after because of her, even though her dowry was vast. Everything started to change when her sister met Rexton. Gina started having the debut she envisioned as a child and she met Rexton's brother, Andrew. She was intrigued with him from the start, even though he wasn't an Earl, Marquess or Duke.
After her sister married, she moved with the Duke and Duchess of Greystone and started spending even more time with Andrew. They could talk about everything, they had fun together and, most importantly, they understood each other. Gina shared her wish for adventures so, Andrew thought it was a great idea to take her to a brothel(kid you not!), to teach her to play cards and many other "unfeminine" activities.
I loved how they interacted with each other. Andrew never lied to her or treated her like a 2nd class citizen because she was a woman. He had a bit of an inferiority complex thanks to a woman who only thought he was good for sex because he wasn't on the way of inheriting a title. That colored his view and he kept expecting Gina to treat him differently because of it. It never happened.
This was lovely novella, I enjoyed catching up with favorite characters and seeing Gina and Andrew get their HEA.
Favorite Quote:
After Andrew took Gina to the brothel
“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to speak with a woman of experience about what transpires between a man and woman. Tillie and I have never spoken of the details. Like you, I don’t want to make a fool of myself the first time.”
“You could have asked me.”
“That would have been highly inappropriate.”
“Yet going to a brothel with me wasn’t?”
Her face warmed. She didn’t think she could have gone with anyone else. She’d spoken true. She did trust him. And not only because he was Rex’s brother, but because she sensed he would protect her at all costs. And he’d always shown her kindness. While his attention had seemed brotherly on the surface, she’d often felt an undercurrent of desire simmering through him. Or perhaps it was only wishful thinking on her part. He’d never done anything untoward. More’s the pity.
4.5 stars!!! What a lovely, lovely read this was. Andrew, the spare, and Gina, the young American heiress whose sister had wed his brother. He swore off love ,but he couldn't resist the charms of the lovely Gina. This couple was adorable!!!
2 Estrellas.
I finished this series, but missed this novella. This is book 4.5 in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series. It’s about the younger sister of the book 4 heroine and the younger brother of it’s hero. Of course I had to find out what happens between these two.
A wealthy American heiress in London, young Miss Virginia (Gina) Hammersley truly believes romance exists. She gets emotional and her heart swoons when reading romance novels. She thinks such affection could not be written about, if it did not exist. This is her first Season seeking a suitor for marriage, but with her dance card full and suitors lining up, she can’t deny that she feels something for Lord Andrew anytime he’s near.
Unbeknownst to Gina, Lord Andrew Mabry is struggling to ignore her, to keep his thoughts and eyes off her. He is a great believer in love, his parents adored each other. But still, he believes it’s a waste focusing all emotion on one person. Then again, Gina is different from anyone he’s ever known and he can’t figure out why. Noticing Andrew eyeing Gina, his brother Rexton has given him fair warning to stay away from her. Covering his tracks, Andrew tells Rexton she’s remarkably dull. Gina overhears it and makes a challenge to herself to prove him wrong. Gina proving that, takes her to dark locations a girl like her would never be seen with Andrew in tow. I enjoyed their secret escapades, and the fun that ensued as they grew to care more for each other every day.
Gina is looking for a husband, and Andrew has sworn he’ll never be one.
This was such a fun and sweet novella. I loved Gina and Andrew's saucy adventures. And those unexpected tender moments that snuck up on them both showed how right they were for each other.
If you’re looking for a great, one-sitting cozy read . . . Pick this up!
'Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses' by Lorraine Heath is Book 4.5 in The "Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James"' series. This is the story of Lord Andrew Mabry and Gina Hammersley. This book is around 160 pages long. I haven't yet read the previous book, so for me this was a standalone book. Gina is the younger sister to Andrew's new Sister In-Law. Andrew is a fun loving second son of the Duke of Greystone. So he has no responsibility to marry and produce an heir but he does find Gina hard to resist. Gina knows his thoughts on marrying but finds it hard not to have feelings for him. When they are caught in a questionable situation they both have choices to make.
Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses is the novella in the "Scandalous Gentlemen of St James" and yes there are still some Lorraine Heath that I have yet to read. And this was one of them. But this was such a wonderful audiobook. I highly recommend it in audio. The audio narration was truly delightful as long as I didn't have it too fast. I am not sure I have listened to this narrator much but definitely going to listen to more of her as I didn't struggle with the accent being used. (I am very picky about this as I don't care for them too heavy)
This story was beyond endearing. I loved this dynamic. The heroine was adorable. She was reserved in some ways but also daring and thrilling in other respects. The hero is a rake but also is attracted to her but doesn't want to be lol There is a bit of a taboo in some ways as he is a rake, and his brother is married to her sister so its not encouraged for them to be together. We see some effects of a scandal that erupts here and the heroine has to make a choice on what truly matters for her and fighting for the man she actually loves. I loved her courage and her willingness to fight for what matters here. Definitely encouraging in many regards.
Overall I found this novella to be a true delight and a great diversion from reality. Highly recommend for Lorraine Heath or Victorian Era historical romance lovers.
I loved this story so much! Honestly from the last book, I was more invested in Gina and Andrew’s story than I was with Tillie and Rex, so I’m so glad I got this book! I felt like this story was the perfect length and it didn’t feel rushed at all, which is sometimes hard to do with novellas. But I seriously loved these two characters together. I mean, who couldn’t. Overall, this was a great addition to the series, and I’m so glad I read it!
Andrew Mabry, the younger son of the Duke of Greystone, enjoys his carefree life and has sworn to never marry. Yet, Andrew's determined bachelorhood is put to the test by Gina Hammersley, whose longing to broaden her horizons tempts him with forever.
This final installment in the series hits all the spots that the previous one missed. That said, it does require a healthy suspension of disbelief to accept that
Gina's feisty and adventurous spirit is the perfect foil for Andrew's dissatisfaction with his dissolute life. They bring out the best in each other and their connection, both physical and emotional, is tangible.
As this is a novella, it is a little short on plot, but it more than makes up for it with the delightful romance. It is great to have the series end on a high note.
Five surprisingly funny and sexy stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novella by Lorraine Heath. I have started pigeonholing her under angsty-emo authors, but Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses proved that she's more versatile than that. This novella is funny and steamy, yet still full of substance. For all that it's a novella, it feels complete. The character growth for both Andrew and Gina is there, so with the development of their love for one another. I especially liked that Gina was more than what she seemed in Notorious Heiress.
This is truly a satisfying read.
Note: I requested this book from Edelweiss and Avon granted me the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
FINAL DECISION: A lovely gem of a coda to the amazing Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series. Gina and Andrew are such a fun and sweet couple that I smiled and sighed through the whole story.
THE STORY: Miss Virginia "Gina" Hammersley was supposed to be the sister making an advantageous marriage this season. But her scandalous older sister and the Marquess of Rexton fell in love. Now with her sister making a proper marriage, Gina knows that her own options have expanded as well. Lord Andrew Mabry, the younger brother of Rexton, intends never to marry. As the "spare", Andrew knows that he doesn't have the title that Gina wants. Yet neither his determination to remain a bachelor nor Gina's expectations can keep Andrew from wanting to be with the woman he cannot take his eyes off.
OPINION: This story was so well done that I truly forgot that it was a novella. By focusing intensely on the characters and their relationship, the novella felt complete and satisfying.
Andrew is the second son who hasn't found a purpose in his life. It is always a challenge for an author to write the story of a child born of a happy marriage (which is one reason we don't see as many books about the children of prior characters). The best characters are often found in torment from their lives. Andrew had a happy childhood, but Heath does a good job of giving him his own pain that has made him more convinced to stay unmarried. A man who has an example of the wonderful marriage of his parents can only be determined to stay unmarried if he fears inside that he will never be able to duplicate that effort. I loved his character which is fun and sweet (even though he sees himself as rakish). He is immensely likeable and this book shows him finding who he really can be.
Gina is a woman who has an American's brashness and desires to be her own person. When she recognizes that she wants Andrew, she is determined to take every opportunity open to her for adventure and happiness. I love that she is unconventional and yet has her limits. I also really admire a woman who is willing to suffer for love, is willing to put happiness over reputation and I liked her strength and joy in life.
I just loved the relationship between Gina and Andrew. Sweet and sexy and fun.
I'm a big sucker for these types of stories where we get to see more of characters from prior books. I love having a few moments more with characters that I already fell in love with and I admit that I have a hard time letting go of their stories. There are glimpses throughout this story which just made me happy.
WORTH MENTIONING: This is a novella.
CONNECTED BOOKS: GENTLEMEN PREFER HEIRESSES is book 4.5 of the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series (which itself is a spin-off of the Scoundrels of St. James series). This book is a closer for book 4 of that series, AN AFFAIR WITH A NOTORIOUS HEIRESS. I recommend reading that book first because this one flows directly from that book -- although the story itself is separate. It is not necessary to read any of the prior books in the series to read this one, but with all the connecting characters, this book just works better as part of the series.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

dnf @ 60%....not sure why I even read this much but it is a novella after all and I paid for it. First of all, let me say I like Lorraine Heath and have read over 13 of her books. Including almost all of the Scoundrels of St James series and almost all of Scandalous Gentlemen of St James. I know who these characters are, their brothers and sisters, their parents. I generally know what to expect from Heath. I like a bit of steam in my books. If a book deliberately touts itself as "clean" I look elsewhere because I don't want to be preached at. But this little novella is ridiculous. At the 3% mark, our heroine Gina's breasts are "tingling" with the thought of Andrew pulling her dress down to touch them. It pretty much goes back and forth from there with each one lusting and imaging sex with the other. There is no character development...no story really. Just wondering when they will finally do "it" until the point when I just don't care anymore. Perhaps I am just getting old but I want to care about the characters in the books I read. Understand their problems and frustrations. Feel immersed in their story. The biggest problem these two had was how soon they could have sex. I'll think twice before I purchase another Heath book and wait for plenty of reviews, although it appears I am in the minority on this one.
2022 review: while scenes of andrew and gina interacting were shown in Tillie's and rex's book, it wasn't very detailed to the point that we knew them very well. the same happened in this book. i felt Lorraine Heath spent too little time showing us the hero's and heroine's personalities that i feel i could not completely love and sympathize with them. would have liked to see more layers into their personalities, as it felt shallow, and not elaborated enough.
their romance felt like insta-lust so i wasn't actually sure or believed how they fell for each other. however, i did enjoy their interactions and the adventures they had.
it amused me when the mabry family all came together for a discussion and frannie scolded sterling, rex, and andrew.
at the back, i thought andrew would put up more of a fight in marrying gina. he was so easily convinced that it seemed rushed.
all in all, a pleasant and fun book to read that could have had better characterizations (?).
Lorraine Heath is my fav - this did not disappoint. Definitely a fun read and best to read after reading An Affair with a Notorious Heiress (Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James, #4) since that is when our heroine, Gina, is introduced. She is fun and not what she seems and it is hilarious how she plays upon everyone's preconceived notions regarding her. The interaction between Gina and Andrew is sexy and fun. Great read - my only complaint was that it was short.
I'm putting this on my list of worst books I finished. There is no plot, there is no dialogue, there is no character development, it is a total complete blah. I could write this book in one sentence "Two dimwits lust after each other and then they have sex." This is my last book by this author.
It seems like wherever I look I’m enraged and heartbroken by the state of the world, so I need an angst free escape and this Lorraine Heath’s regency novella is the perfect regency fun. The whole series is great, but this one came at just the right time for me, a few hours of steamy fun in a far away time. Loved it, wish it was longer.
This is only my 14th book by Lorraine Heath. Her books are well written and great reads.
I really liked Andrew and Gina a lot. I wish this wouldn't have been a novella but I figure we know so much about both these characters from the other books. Overall good read. Too short but good.
